    Half Price Antarctic Flights

    Return or One Way ???

    • +22

Neither I think - it's merely a scenic flight. You can't land in Antarctica with a plane of that size.

      • it's merely a scenic flight.

Do you need a passport ?

        • +4

No. Had a friend do that. You depart from domestic airport and land back there.

          • +5

@rdhupar: What if the plane gets diverted whilst you're in international waters and you need to land?

            • +1

@jv: Not sure mate. Just telling you what I had heard from friends who had done it. You remain airborne and come back to Aus. You dont land in Antarctica at all.

            • +2

              @jv: Thrown in jail, obviously

            • +31

@jv: you get towed to Indo, Manis Is or Nauru.

            • +10

@jv: @JV haven't you seen the movie 'The Terminal'? You would be like Tom Hanks and not allowed to leave if that happened…

            • +1

@jv: Jv just hope it lands in local water then

            • +6

              @jv:

What if the plane gets diverted whilst you're in international waters and you need to land?

You attach harness to passing whale, and ride back home during the yearly migration to Australia… of course

            • +3
            • +3

@jv: You will not be able to access ozbargain

            • @jv: Then you can't clear customs at the place where you land. That said, where could the plane possibly be diverted to? Argentina?

            • @jv: Then you’d be “watering” not landing…

            • @jv: There are no laws in international waters.

              • -1

@theHMASfriendship: Of course there are. Australia just hijacked, I mean boarded carrying automatic rifles, suspicious fishing boats in international waters in the Arabian sea and thinks it's legal.

                • @[Deactivated]: Hijacked shmaijacked. They seized a tonne of heroin bound as part of a UN mission.

                  • @Dentshop: There are more deaths in the US associated with Australian grown opium than the golden triangle. Prescription drugs are a major problem and Australia supplies about 50% of the world's medicinal opium … and polices international waters thousands of miles away. Make the conflict of interest call for yourself.

                    • +1

@[Deactivated]: Australia grows its opium with the best intentions - pain relief for those who need it. Smuggled heroin is intended to create addicts from society's most vulnerable and then drain them and their families for everything they have. Stopping street heroin from reaching the market is a welcome step by any government. Putting the dealers through a wood chipper is the next best measure.

            • +1

@jv: If you're in international waters down near Antarctica, possessing correct documentation is the least of your concerns.

            • @jv: I've heard of this happening. You're basically stuffed into an isolated part of the airport where you're not free to access the main terminal.

Edit: Actually this was when passengers had passports, though no visa. Was when an international flight was diverted to a different country. They basically get rounded into a holding room like cattle lol

          • @rdhupar: So I can bring a Boost Juice on board? That's pretty neat.

        • +20

Usually you just get a seal of approval.

        • +6

Customs would say “ice to see you”

          • +1

@dogzilla: Reply to customs “ice ice baby”

      • -1

Sure you can "land". You just can't take off.

Air New Zealand Flight 901 to Mt Erebus ? (Too soon?)

        • Too soon?

Well it is 40 years since, so…

          • @PinzVidz: keep thinking there. Obvious answer. Must be a rhetorical question.
"too soon" means we can't joke yet, so …

    • +3

Would be a one way flight if you were to land

    • +2

      Return or One Way ???

Its one way JV, you don't land there….. So its a Melbourne to Melbourne flight.

      • +13

Does that make it a no-way flight?

  • +31

$600 is a good price for a centre seat with no window. I suppose I can look at Antarctica on the small screen in front of me.

    • +11

Should be free if you don't get a window.

    • +2

Book a centre and a window with a friend and then swap a few times - the ozbargainer way!

        • +16

no, you book a centre, and your mate books a window. literally what he said.

          • -1

            @waterbottled: It's been a long day…

            • +28

@jv: Spamming OzB is not a "long day"

          • +4

@waterbottled: Sometimes I think JV is just looking for reasons to stir sh$t. Inject his/her veins with bargains to bring him/her back to life.

      • +1

Actually quite interesting when you read their site - people in the middle 2 seats are stuck, but those in the 4 seats on each side actually do a swaparoo halfway through the flight, so people on the inside aisles can rotate to have a view out the window.

But yeah, not much of a view staring out those commercial airline windows…

        • A 747 has 3 plus 4 plus 3. Thats too many centre seats.

    • $600 is a good price for a centre seat with no window

      Think couples….

One has the window, one has the center seat, you both get to 'share' the window

      • You won't see anything if its cloudy.

        • Then it won't matter if you have a window seat or not.

    • Middle seat people are allowed to get up and look out the ac door windows

      • That's too many people on a 747 trying to see through the window on a door.

        • Not really, after a few minutes looking you’ll get used to it. I went to joburg and you fly over Antarctica and you see enough ice to feel satisfied

    • +2

Couldn't you just look at Antarctica on the small screen in front of you at home? For free.

      Save $600!

  • +25

why would anyone buy no window then? just to say that they flew ACROSS Antarctica and saw nothing?

    • +3

Its apparently like a party on the plane and people walk around seeing stuff. Heard from friends who had done it.

      • alcohol?

      • What if the 'fasten seatbelt sign' is on or if its a cloudy day?

    • Think couples….

One has the window, one has the center seat, you both get to 'share' the window

    • You can get up and look out door windows

    • +3

Me and my grandad who's 94 did it a few years ago, The Journey down is somewhat boring but once your over Antarctica you simply share the emergency and end of row windows.
Doesn't sound great but it was actually fantastic, with everyone very happy to share.
At $600 it's an absolute steal whoever was lucky enough to get seats, if they did it for that price from Perth again I would definitely go.

    • Guessing only appropriate as a 2nd or 3rd person in the same group so you could rotate seats. Plus you could see something it just wouldn't be that great.

  • how long for the trip? so no landing?

    • +3

      No Landing.

Edit: Technically landing back in Aus ;)

    • 12 hours return. Nowhere to land a 747 in Antartica.

    • Planes do land there. There's lots of people living at the many stations there.

      • +8

        Indeed, but not 747s

        • +2

C-5, C-17 and C-130 transport aircraft operated out of Christchurch do land at airfields near McMurdo and Ross Bases, though probably not this late in summer. If a laden C-5 can land then a 747 shouldn't have any issues.

          • @twjr: Australian Antarctic Division hires the A319 and lands there

        • Don't forget the C212 as well.

If required, in an emergency, a 747 can land in Antarctica. Not sure if it can depart again though.

  • +2

Do they stamp Antarctica arrival and departure on your passport?

    • No

      • +26

So what can I post on Facebook/Instagram?

        • +10

Photos taken from the plane window :)

        • +4

          This and This

          • +6

@cornbeef: That looks like business class seats. You can sleep during the long flight.

          • +17

            @cornbeef: thanks, just saved $1500

  • +19

$600 but see nothing except tiny screen, what is the point.

spend $100 in barbecue and beer and watch Antarctica DVD ($50).

    • Maybe. I am keen but could never justify the price earlier. Sounds decent value now but cannot go on that day.

    • No, spend $40 on a slab of beer and watch free 4k on YouTube.

      • +3

A true OZB will wait it to be 45 degrees in SA, to get free beer and stream 4k youtube on pubs free wifi.

        • +1

will wait it to be 45 degrees in SA

I like your thinking … Somehow 45 degree heat, might not feel so much like the Antarctic experience, though.

        • I've definitely missed something here. You get free beer if it hits 45degrees?

      • Or go to a mates place that has a slab of beer and watch free 4K at his place.

    • You can use this flight to test your cheap Bose or Sony noise cancelling headphones

  • +14

Planet Earth 2 is streaming on Netflix

  • May want to add departure from Melbourne in title.

    • done, thanks!

    • not from Hobart?

      • +1
