where is all the CC whizzes at - is this a deal?… I am over my CBA diamond card with no amex…

    • +4

dropping that AMEX card by CBA - a huge disappointment…

      • I think banks can’t charge interbank fees over a certain limit. Hence most bank affiliated Amex cards stopped. CBA diamond has nothing atm and at $300 plus in fees isn’t worth it unless you work for them and got it for free. I switched over to Virgin Amex Platinium posted here a few weeks ago.

      • Just cancelled my CBA Diamond Awards last month, and got my annual fee ($300+) refunded as it was within 3 months of being charged

        • We don't pay a specific fee - we pay an overall fee that covers a number of discounts (wealth package). One of the things it offers is a discount (to $0) on the CBA diamond. But it's a PIA to change all our auto billing over and as such have just stuck with the CBA Platinum instead as we aren't really seeing a lot of benefits for Diamond over Plat..

Now if someone can answer the question on how good the travel insurance is on CBA Diamond/Platinum - which seem to be provided by Covermore, as opposed to buying separate travel insurance from Covermore.. that'd be awesome..

    • I got diamond as well.. Absolutely trash

    • +3

This is a pretty standard good deal if you have no use for the travel credit.

If you have use for the travel credit this is a really damn good deal. Essentially $1000 for nothing as the travel credit offsets the annual fee.

Average minimum spend, but amex can often be harder to get because of spend restrictions. Still easily achievable though.

Bonus is lounge access, insurance is also good, but standard these days.

      CBA diamond is a joke.

      • Do you know if I can transfer travel credit to someone else, or even sell it on ebay?

        • +1

Not sure, sorry mate. To sell it to someone else, I believe you would have to buy the flight for them, or give them the login, because from memory you use the credit through the amex flight portal.

          • @andyfc: Thanks man

  • -1

How do I sell such "free domestic flights"?

  • -2

says 55,000 points when i click through

    • +1

If you click through a referral it's 100K currently, it mustn't be updated yet for non-referrals

    • +1

The 100,000 bonus point offer is available via referral links only at this stage

    • +5

I think you should revoke that Neg, the OP clearly states "when you sign up with a referral". He can't set the link to a referral, only the page about the credit card (for information).

      Very harsh Neg.

      • +2

fair point that was my bad - how to reverse neg? wont let me unclick

        edit: found it !

        • Cool, I was just being dramatic when I said Very harsh. :-)

          • +1

@Poolprouk: nah not at all - was a harsh neg since I didnt read right

I just figured its not a deal at 55k points for $450, but if you can get 100k points at $450 then hell of a deal :P

  • Depending on travel (unless you generally travel east to west coast) you used to get more out of the $450 Qanas travel credit.

  • $3000/3 months spend should be added to title description ?

Also Eligibility reads the following :

    ELIGIBILITY
To save time before you apply for your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, it's best to make sure you can say yes to the following:
I have a personal gross (pre-tax) annual income of $65,000 or more

    Contradicts the household 65k

  • Can you get this if you've already had offers from other Amex issued cards from Banks??? ie like the Westpac companion offer which has a Amex card?

    • +1

Yes, bank issued AMEX cards are different.

      • I am not so sure that the Amex card that came with the Westpac deal was a bank issued card? I had to lodge a seperate application for it? Hopefully I am wrong and can go ahead and apply for this!

        • +1

I believe they're still classed as Bank Related AMEX cards.

        • That one has a big Westpac logo on it. Amex issued cards have a Spartan head on them

    • +1

Just called and confirmed with an agent - yes the offers are applicable as the Westpac combined deal is not technically a bank issued card itself. So the answer is yes. Applied and got approved for this one woot!

      • Thank you so much for this. I will put an application in for this one as well then i think ^_^

        • +1

All good.. when in doubt call, record the agents name/time/date and ensure its noted on your acc!

  • +3

Interesting, just did a side by side comparison of Perth-Sydney flights on Amex booking site vs Qantas website and Amex site comes in $100 more expensive for identical flights. Didnt do an extensive check, but it does question the full value of a flight credit with Amex.

    • +5

Cost was the same when i booked a flight last year.

      • +2

Identical cost for an international flight when I booked last year as well.

    • Yep, I noticed the same when I had this (or a similar?) card a while ago. You still get some value out of it, but not as much as it sounds.

    • +1

I would query the Amex booking site support team. They have online chat support and have been very speedy and helpful in the past.

  • +3

Hey OP, I've heard this Household income requirement in the past but can't see it written anywhere. e.g. on the card page it says "I have an income of 65K or more". Would it not say I have a household income of 65K or more.

I'm in this situation, wife is on home duties with the kids and no income but I meet the criteria and have already done a similar deal in the past (switched to discovery card whilst i waited for a deal like this to come up).

  • Is this as good as it gets with the Qantas Ultimate? I can't remember whether there's been a bigger sign-on bonus in the past.

    • +1

There was a previous 112,500 referral offer some time ago

      • If you can keep iti in the family then this with the 10K referral bonus to the referer makes it worth 110K in total.

I like to keep it in the family, oooeerr…..

  • This or the Virgin one?

    • Ignore…. I thought you were commenting about virgin money

  • +2

travel credit is not really that great - was better when it was just a flight voucher and you could travel even in peak periods

nowadays plenty of airlines charge much less for a domestic flight

    • How does this travel credit works? Does booking through Amex means there is 'special' price and only selected QF flights/periods? Does it work for Jetstar?

      • im not really sure other than it has to be booked with them and Qantas flights only so its $450 off the cost of whatever you book

$450 Qantas Travel Credit for eligible international or domestic Qantas flights when you book and pay online at American Express Travel ( travel.americanexpress.com.au )

      • +1

Works for any alliances partners as well.

        For eg. AirChina

Edit: just called Amex… Qantas flights only my bad

    • also double check how the $450 can be used..

you may find you must use the full $450 on the one booking otherwise you forfeit the balance.

  • Anyone know if you can do a balance transfer during application of one of these?

    • Did you find the answer to this?

      • +3

It comes up during the application - i selected no so i skipped it.

        • Cheers for checking that ezza - I didn't realise it was during the application and was hesitant to start the process and cancel it after putting in all my details etc.

  • 1) Does anyone know long you need to have been employed in your current job for Amex to accept your application? I'm a contractor working for a government agency and have been employed in my current contract for around 5 months.

    2) Are there any limitations on this Qantas travel credit? Can it be used for any Qantas flight?

    3) Does this deal provide 100,000 Qantas FF points or 120,000 QFF points? This deal says 55,000 QFF points on the Amex site and the referral links show the referee gets "65,000 Qantas Points after $3,000 Spend + $450 Travel Credit each year" for the Qantas Ultimate Card, which this deal offers, so shouldn't this be 120,000 points in total?

    • Point 3 - if you go to the referral link above and click on the 'random (?)' that will take you to the landing page with 100,000 points

      • +1

        OK - thanks @urbancartel

    • 2) Yes any qantas flight but its mildly annoying booking via the amex travel folks.

      1. I've been working at a public hospital for 2 months and just got approved, so I think they are fairly lenient on duration of employment
  • So if I spend $450 they give me $450 back? Amazing

    • +4

$450 of travel credit. It's not worth nearly as much as $450 cash

      • It's variable dependent on your choice of route. If you need to fly a route only operated by QF then it's high value. but if you can get cheaper flights with a budget airline for the same route and time then yes, the value is less.

        • Can you use the travel credit in combination with points for a flight?

          • +1

@C-JAM: No, this is because the travel credit is for use with Amex travel whereas using points would require you to book direct with qantas.

        • Could I use travel voucher to book an economy flight with Qantas then go through the Qantas site and use my points to upgrade to business?

          • @sauce2k6: Doubt it as fares listed would be a certain sale class. You need to book higher class / flex fares - not sure if the site shows these options.

            • @ezza: I’m pretty sure when I booked last year I was then able to see my booking and apply for an upgrade at the QF FF site.

I was looking at the QF site also when I made my booking at Amex travel and could see that the price I would be paying was for an upgradeable ticket. I think the ticket conditions also indicated that it was an upgradeable ticket.

            • @ezza: It certainly does show these fare classes and that is only the case for international flights, not domestic which can even be upgraded from a red e-deal fare.

          • @sauce2k6: Yes, you can.

      • +1

Would be better if the credit could include hotels or activities as well

        • Agreed but the whole idea is that this is an AMEX Qantas card, therefore they want you to spend the money on qantas via AMEX travel.

          • @Poolprouk: i heard that you can book hotels with them? is that not the case?

            • @alebox: You can but the $450 credit can only be used on Qantas flights which you need to book at Amex travel

              • @Poolprouk: Do you know if it can be booked for someone else or even sell the credit on ebay?

                • @[Deactivated]: You can book it for someone else but you cannot sell the credit.

                  It's not a code or a voucher.

It just gives you the option to pay using your credit from memory.

  • How do I go about getting a referral? My mate has this card so he would be able to refer me right?

    • Yes he can refer you via his referral link, or just click random at the top of this post next to the relevant card.

  • An alternative would now be the Qantas Premier Titanium Mastercard and collect 150,000 points if spend $5k in 90 days….. 2 qantas first invites, bonus status credits…. minor negatives would be $1,200 annual fee, minimum income $200k… :-)

    • +2

This was already posted as a deal and was met with mixed feelings.

      • Heh. I missed that. I can understand how it might not quite be the right demographic for OzBargain…. ;-)

        • +1

You mean you don't earn $200k+?

        • I don't think it's a demographic issue as such - there are probably a number of Ozbargainers that earn > $200K+. However it may be more the value of the package (or lack thereof) compared to say.. this deal.

e.g. the tradeoff on the annual fee vs the benefits you get.

As the signon bonus is a one off benefit, I'm guessing almost all the cards are cancelled sometime between 4 and 11 months down the track..

    • ANZ & westpac have 120k point cards now, why pay 3x the annual fee for 30k more points?

also Qantas money is citibank, so enjoy the application process.

      • Better point earn, better insurance coverage, statement credits and the annual fee converts directly into a travel credit unlike ANZ & Westpac.

  • I have an old gold Amex card gold card, would I be eligible for this deal?

  • +5

There are 29 ozbargainers who haven't had an amex issued card in the past 18 months?

    • I’m at 17 months right now. So will be applying in March.

    • Amex used to regularly do a 100K deal on this card up until about a year ago. A lot of people have been waiting for a deal like this to come up again.

    • been wondering the same thing.. this 18 month requirement makes it hard to rip cards for points

  • out of interest - what are people's credit scores like who sign up constantly for new credit card deals.

I keep see these coming up, but am reticent to join one as will be signing up a new home loan in a few months.

    • If it's soon, and you're concerned, then don't sign up unless replacing an existing card. If anything, reducing these things are a good idea. All active credit card limits are added together and impacts your overall borrowing power.

    • Take 3-5% of your total credit card limit and deduct that from your borrowing power. If those numbers stack up against your budget and the property you want to buy then no issues.

I've been churning cards for 5 years (anywhere from 3-6 per year) and credit score hasn't dropped below 600's. Currently sitting at around 800.

      • Banks now assume you pay 3-5% of the credit limit per month, usually a repayment period of 3 years (new ASIC reg), so around 3.8% per month depending on the assumptions around rate. A 15k limit adds around 7k per year to the expense line item in their serviceability calculators. This will knock about 100k off what they will lend to you.

Even a small 2k credit card will take about 10k off most people's borrowing power.
