  • Atom and eMMC, NO THANKS!

    • +11

You get what you pay for and there's no other Win10 devices around in this price range… Prior to this I was using a Chuwi Win10 tablet, this is a significant upgrade…

I carry mine in a backpack while riding a dirtbike offroad in remote areas, the risk of damage is high, I cant justify destroying expensive devices…

      Horses for courses ;)

      • +7

Yep, these are quite capable with 4GB RAM (2GB was the main limiting factor in a lot of the other Atom-based Windows tablets). eMMC is far quicker in usage as an OS drive than any HDD.

        • +2

Agree. I have an old Atom with 2GB RAM and 64GB eMMC (Asus Transformer) that was Win 8.1 now Win 10. it still runs fine for Office (no 'thick' excel sheets), Outook, Chrome, Netflix etc when travelling where there is risk of damage or theft. I have a memory card in it for extra storage.

        • +3

eMMC is actually a good thing, not a bad thing, generally not quick as quick as modern SSD's it is roughly the same principal.
Only 32GB is a bit of a pain tho.
With 8GB ram and 64 / 128GB eMMC this would be very snappy for light tasks and light on power usage / cost.

  • sooooo, if someone was crazy enough to want to relive the old DOS and early Windows days - whats peoples knowledge/experience with something like this?
    Possible???

Old Dos games and the like…….

  • 32gb mmc is not serviceable with windows. gets full quickly after a few updates.

    • +5

Nah, it's fine, I have 13gb free space… You just have to do a Disk Cleanup after major updates, delete old win versions and such, with updates like 1803 to 1809 it uses the SD card for extra storage while updating.. When you can, store apps, programs, offline maps, and such, on the SD card to keep c-drive as free as possible…

      Also, running "Compact OS" helps:
      https://www.windowscentral.com/how-reduce-windows-10-footpri…

      • maybe situation improved since 2016, because back then whatever I did, I still ran out of space, and couldn't download AND install 2nd major windows update. of course I got rid of previous versiins.

        • +1

I don't think Win 10 could make use of external storage or an SD card for major updates when it first came out..

Early days with the Chuwi tablet, when I was using dual-boot and only had a 16gb windows drive, I had to download the updates and install them from an external drive, they always failed if I tried to download and install through win-update..

It would be great if this is a chromeos device

  • Maybe pop a low resources Linux distro on it.

PS. Actually scratch that - is unlikely to be anything hardware specific to it as isn't actually a common type build.

    • Linux works, except for camera and SD slot. You need a recent kernel for S3 suspend.

Perfect as touch screen for solar controller which USB connected and has windows software

    • +2

My thoughts too - going to use it as a touch screen interface for some home automation.

BTW, you can power and charge these from USB using a USB to 3.5mm x 1.35mm plug cable, like:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-USB-A-Male-to-2-0mm-5-5mm-…

    or search ebay for >>> USB to 3.5mm x 1.35mm <<< there's lots around for a dollar or two…

    • Note that the original charger is rated at 4A, more than most USB sources.

      • +1

Yep, it just sucks what it can, it's just slower to charge than the AC adapter… When I checked with a USB power meter it was drawing 1.6 amps from the power-bank from memory… (The limiting factor is probably those thin cheap ebay cables)

(When I'm on the road I charge it from a Xiaomi 10,000mah power bank in the tent at night, then recharge the power bank from the motorbike through the day)

  • My five years old zenbook ux301 has died on me recently, is there any machine with good value I can get in this offer ? Mainly use for browsing, YouTube, Netflix, and simulator to run some android game.

    • Eh? What is wrong with the Lenovo Miix 320?

  • Just trying to Google the specs and the various sites mentions that the screen is FHD. Is 1280x800 on Graysonline a typo? Does this unit come with micro/mini-HDMI ports?

    • +1

There was a FHD version but I don't think it was released in Aus… and it has a Micro HDMI port..

Thanks FLICKIT - Oh no! I just "got" that username, haha.

Looks like 30 of them sold rapidly after you made this post. I hope Grays sends a thankyou card.

  • FLICK…

I wanted one of these to donate as a testbed item to a local company… ah well! (Was going to be used as a dumb data entry terminal for customers, think a Chrome webform…)

  • mine has arrived and its in excellent condition!
now to hose (profanity) windows…..after i usb boot to linux first as a test if i can figure out which keys to smash.
power and volume up to get to bios. to install windows you need a mcirosft account. (profanity) that, not gonna bother. i have an android thats already tracking my (profanity) movements
