  • Just got rid of the Ring Door Bell and replaced it with the Ring Pro
    Was totally unreliable

    • Why was it unreliable? In what way is the pro better?

    • Never had a single issue with mine

    • Why was it unreliable, power WiFi etc

To put this in context I have a Pro on my house, two spotlights and the standard ring on a holiday home.

The spotlights seem fine. A couple of quirks with audio but overall pretty good
The pro failed once (totally inert and a second time i was contacted by ring telling me that it was going to fail and they were sending a replacement before it failed)
        Not great but ok

The standard though was totally unreliable on external power. Kept ignoring the external power and going to battery then going dead flat which necessitated a 2 hour drive to reboot, repair and recharge. I went through two of them and im currently paying an extra $250 to upgrade it to the pro just to get rid of the hassle. The last time it went flat it just wouldnt start again. Seems to be a common issue with internal batteries (google problems with ring battery).

So overall Ring is ok but not super. Good enough for the pro's and the spotlights but i think unusable for the original on external power.

I believe their connectors are pretty crap so there is some oxidation build up on the power connectors which eventually isolate it from external power.

So not an issue if at a place you live using on normal battery

          • @asa79: possibly not. It did brick the last time. Its actually in a box at the moment because it went flat and can't be recharged.

  • With people in the know I would like to know how this is a great deal please.

In terms of value you could spend $350 buying Alexa spot and Ring Door Bell 2 separately on sales. You're essentially getting the Phillips hue kit for free.

    • It's a bundle

    • As others have mentioned, in a bundle this represents good value.

In addition as a bundle it has all the basic home automation devices to get someone started.

    • Ring doorbell 2 $300 amazon 199 the hue bulbs $150

  • Note that the hue lights are E27 (Edison screw) only. There’s no bayonet option with the bundle.

    • you can buy b22 to e27 adapters if required

What makes it a ‘security’ kit? 12 months of Ring subscription or something maybe would make sense

    • I was thinking the same, looks more like a door bell kit

  • Purchased, will probably sell the Hue Kit as I don’t need another hub, and probably sell the Echo Spot as I’m not sure I want it… bought it for a cheap Ring 2 :)
