….and..this will be repeated again until next week. lol-

  • +7

Why don't they just release one code that goes on for a few day?

    • +27

Each new code is giving you a further 4 transactions. Isn't this a good thing?

      • +19

        You sir are an optimist

      • +6

How many $120+ transactions does one need to make on ebay?

A better thing would be lowering the min limit, and upping the cap.

        • +1

If you lower the limit, how would upping the cap make a difference? If your intention is to spend $50, the cap may as well be $5. Obviously no caps would be great, but eBay undoubtedly has reasons for doing what they do. I suppose we can either accept their terms or shop elsewhere. No-one is holding guns to our heads :)

EDIT: eBay has just updated its terms to show $100 max discount for PLAN10.

        • I think the better way to say it would have been to either up the cap or lower the limit.

        • +1

It seems like eBay has no idea what they are doing. Amazon is killing it. I hardly buy anything from eBay anymore and tons of stuff now from Amazon. I've only used these $120 10% off deals once.

          • +5

@Jacko1235: Maybe they just have different target audiences. I've bought way more from eBay than Amazon since Amazon opened, and I've got both Plus and Prime. Lots of things from third-party sellers are much cheaper on eBay.

            • +1

              @eug: Exactly my experience too.

      • +3

I'm 1000% sure they're just doing this to keep fresh posts up on ozbargain. most basic of advertising tactics. while there are currently no rules against this on ozbargain, we should start thinking about these limits, or we'll soon get spammed every 12 hours with "new deals" which are just coupon refreshes.

        • Agree with the principle of what you're saying but I'm happy to get the eBay coupon spam given it's such a broad discount (rather than very specific niche products).

        • +3

A couple of thousand clicks originating from OzBargain is hardy a significant amount of traffic to site like eBay. To suggest they run these discounts to maintain OzBargain visibility is comical.

          • @dm01: that's true, I'm sorry I specified this to OzBargain, I know there are lots of other e-mail newsletters (we consider them pure spam but you'd be surprised how many people have literally hundreds of these subscribed and defend them furiously) that also blast these out. So maybe tens of thousands in the grand scheme of things to keep "eBay" fresh and associated with sales in our minds.

      Because
"… short term promotions are for us to attract more buyers to purchase items with urgency … are a great way to draw people in, create a sense of urgency, and get them to convert. This is our promotional strategy."

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/424346#comment-6714798

Personally, I find this fabricated "sense of urgency" an irritating stunt.

      • +1

Personally, I find this fabricated "sense of urgency" an irritating stunt.

How is it different from any limited-time sale? Would you rather eBay not offer any discounts at all? They're not obligated to give us any discounts whatsoever, after all.

      • +2

yep, when you release these codes every other week then the sense of urgency is completely lost and they will be getting ever diminishing returns on these now. Anything I am considering buying I know I can wait till the next 10 or 20% off code as it won't be any more than a week or so away.

        • and they will be getting ever diminishing returns on these now.

Dunno, eBay pulled in US$10.75 billion last year. I suspect they know a thing or two about marketing.

Anything I am considering buying I know I can wait till the next 10 or 20% off code as it won't be any more than a week or so away.

eBay probably knows that not everyone is like that. :)

          • @eug: and that 10.75 billion is still less than were getting 5 years ago. I don't disagree with it being profitable or it working in the short term. But it is a really poor long term strategy as the time between the sales shortens to try to keep the money rolling, we are almost at the point where many expect at least a 10% discount as the normal price.

    • +2

FOMO prompts people to load up and spend more to get their "savings". It's great for those already intending on spending the $120 or more anyway but for those customers who are just adding more items in their cart to reach the $120, just to save $12, it's a false economy. Since each sale is sporadic and doesn't last long, consumers are prompted into spending the money right now. If they were held on a set time every month, consumers would hold off on spending and wait for it.

All it does is make me not want to buy anything when there is no discount code available as I then know I'm paying too much.

    • +1

I went to a brick and mortar yesterday and bought a Philips Lightstrip Plus at relatively normal price (long story, but couldn't wait).

It really hurt to be paying normal price.

  • -1

These deals are pissing me off, been saving up a heap of smaller items to use the 5% off deal, and kept getting an "error on checkout". Had to call eBay support to be told that theres a 10 item max on thr checkout. So i go under 10, and now it wont work because I am purchasing from more than 5 sellers. Cut back to 5 sellers and now I am under 50 bucks. Wasted a bunch of time and couldve had my items by now if i hadnt waited aaving them up.

  • Great, glad I held off paying for a few items because now I have reached the minimum spend :)

  • +1

"…when you spend $120 or more in one transaction during the Offer Period, up to a maximum discount of $100 per transaction. A maximum of 4 transactions apply."

It states $100 max discount, not $50

    • +2

I just bought something for $1000 and got the $100 discount.. so confirmed it works that way I guess.

  • +1

Managed to use the code on a car part and get the full 10% off (over $50), so I don't think the max discount is in place at the moment!

Edit: Seems the max discount is now $100, so that makes more sense.

    • Nice. Car parts are often excluded.

  • Any S10 Plus 128 GB deals by genuine seller like Mobileciti?

  • While there hasn't been a 15% off sitewide in a while, the frequency of the 10% is not so bad considering I still have lots of unused gift cards when overseas eBay had 15% off everything. So that is 23.5% off in total which is great if you are looking to buy something expensive.

  • What the! Is there price protection if I only got max of $50 off yesterday?

  • +2

After the previous PANIC when there was no 10% off code for 4 hours and 26 minutes eBay PLANned this one.

  • geez, I just bought a $120 item just before this deal posted.

  • I'm finding ebay difficult to shop at when looking for "AU stock" because sellers are claiming it is AU stock as long as the stock is currently sitting in a warehouse somewhere in Australia. They will even say "Australian warranty" because technically you are sending it to a place in Australia.

It used to be you tick the filter that says "Australia only" and the stock is a safe bet to be AU stock. Then they started holding their stock here, so actual AU stock would label itself as AU stock, AU warranty. Or 2 year warranty. But now even grey imports are using those terms.

Then you would look at the price differences. But now that there's GST on imports, the imports aren't a whole lot cheaper, so you're not sure if it's AU stock going for a pretty good discount, or if it's just import stock priced more expensive than they used to be.

There are even listings for accessories claiming to be "original" or "genuine" Samsung stock, but if you look at the pictures you can tell they are knock offs.

Now I'm kinda worried when buying stuff on ebay unless it comes from a big known seller.

    • +2

I've got you man. It's super easy to see if a seller is AU or not.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/433727

    • Ask if the item full Australian manufactures warranty.

Ask it if the item is grey or originally meant for sale in Australia.

      • You can ask, the truth is, you don't have time to wait for a reply. These % off codes have a short expiry, and if you wait for an answer before buying, you will miss out on the discount. So you have to make the decision without asking.

Maybe they should respond with 20% off to get back to #1 position of all time on Ozbargain.

  • I tried buying a few items but one of them refused to let me pay and got removed from my cart even after paying via PayPal - it appears in my purchase history but says "UNPAID" with no way to pay! I still got the 10% off on everything else in the cart despite being below the minimum once the item is taken out, but it's very puzzling. I also got confirmation emails that it all went through.

  • +2

Ahaha this literally could not have come in at a better time… I submitted a best offer of $180 for something that was $220, and was given a counter-offer of $200. I re-submitted my offer of $180 and it was rejected. Then I saw this beauty pop up (not surprising, really, given how often eBay does this). Anyway, I made my final offer of $200, was accepted and paid $180. It's a win win! The seller got his/her $200, and I got my $180!
