Free (Ad Supported) USA Mobile Number @ textnow.com for Free Calls/Texts to/from USA

390

Was looking for a free US mobile number and came across www.textnow.com
Textnow is apparently an MVNO in the USA but they have a web/ app based free plan with an actual phone number included.
Cheaper than getting a Skype-in number for the USA.

The Australian iPhone AppStore has the app and I presume the Android Play store as well.

You can choose from a limited set of USA numbers when registering.
The website or the app allows you to send texts and make calls to the USA/Canada for free. Receiving calls/ texts from any country is also free.

Can buy credit from the iTunes balance to make calls overseas (0.02/min to Australia).
Sending texts limited to only some countries other than the USA/Canada.

Mods please move to forum if this doesn't qualify as a deal.

Sounds great. What do I do with it

Free text/calls to USA for free. Maybe now you can start some prank call series.

      • Looks very dodgy, asks for Facebook and Google account, not accepting email registration.

I don't know why these dodgy businesses always ask for Facebook or Google!

        • Weird..accepted my email but wouldn't accept my Facebook.

          • @[Deactivated]: How Jari? There is no option to sign up with email. Even though it accepts signing in with email. Smells fishy

            • @[Deactivated]: I tried logging in with facebook on the website but the system was hanging forever. I registered using email on the app.

          @ pal

I watched a discussion which suggested the following:

Rothchild dynasty & Jews -> Bank of England -> City of London -> English Royals & Vatican.
Vatican -> CIA (They said stands for 'Crown In Americ'a) -> Were behind the setup of, and funded Google and in some way Facebook. And Youtube is after Google tookover controled by the same heirarchy.

Don't know if accurate, but sounds plausible. Anyway hope that helps explain it in part.

I was looking to get a number to add to a US PayPal account.

      • Ah cool. Why would I want a US PayPal over US?

        • It's a good way to get you to start looking for a US credit card for yourself.

          • @eug: Is this Ebay stealth account stuff?

    • Useful for verifying Google or Facebook accounts without supplying them your real number.

  • Probably obvious to most but it's only a voip phone number.

    • But VOIP don't integrate texts usually.

      • @ chyawala
Their name is textnow.com. So I guess it will. :-)

      • They confirm that they are a VoIP service in their FAQs

I used this years ago. Or tried to use it rather as it was almost unuseable.

    Maybe it's changed YMMV.

  • Android app store doesn't allow access in Australia. The app itself may or may not work, either way to try it you'd need to get around download restrictions (not hard but hardly worth the effort I'd say).

    • There are no obstacles i can guarantee you! Its as easy as 1,2,3 literally. And there are no problems in the Google Playstore for downloading the app so i dont know where your looking into downloading it but everything is A OK in Playstore!

    • If its not working for play store, download a apk

Enabling installation of third party apps on an Android™-based smartphone:
Go to Settings on your phone and switch to the “general” tab, if needed.
      Tap on the “Security” option.
Tick the checkbox next to the “Unknown Sources” option.
Confirm the warning message by tapping on “OK”.

This is useful if you need an actual US phone number which Viber or WhatsApp doesn't provide. Also you cannot use Viber/WhatsApp to call anyone other than an app user unless you buy credit.

  • And why do you need a US phone number?

    • +2

      You obviously don't.
