Don't get why people get so pissed about someone mentioning the legality of them. If someone who doesn't frequent OzB or doesn't check these sorts of posts goes and buys one they're out half a grand on something they can't use. Or they can see a top-tier comment saying they're only legal in QLD and save their money.

@Tacooo: Ive got one in Sydney and ride it daily. Have ridden past many police officers in their cars and even stopped at a light right next to 2 cops on foot. One cop was looking at it as though he wanted to buy one that's it. In short, nobody cares about the legalities not even the ones supposedly enforcing them

Have had motorcycle cop follow me up the footpath (left hand side of King street, heading towards the supreme court complexes), he wasnt game to do speed; I took a left and pushed to 30km/hr on the flat. He was honking his horn, I just kept going - he stopped.
The only ones issuing fines are the ones on the trek from inner west to the city (part of the pedal bike team). They've set up two stings that I know of.
I'm using it between MLC centre and Sydney Museum daily both ways. If they legalise, will go from home into the city. Can't afford the fines and worried about the into the city stings of course.

@Punkboy: The two I know of were part of Operation Pedro [5 through 9]. It's usually set up in Darling Harbour; usually on Murray Street on the way to the Pyrmont foot Bridge. Part of NSW's war on cyclists. Targetting cyclists without helmets, riding too fast on footpaths. Manned by the cycle team (one on the only police who can effectively CATCH and stop people under power on foot vehicles) and targetting powered foot vehicles.
NSW is a bit of a nanny state; $2.2 million in fines against cyclists in 2016-2017 and on the increase.
Having said all that, I am still running the gauntlet, to quote my friend, I simply don't give a f@#k.
You also have to remember the police duty of care. If the motorcycle cop had for example followed me back down Castleraegh street and hit a pedestrian, they are liable under the NSW state laws.
To fine you, they have to catch you. To catch you moving at 30km/hr down a footpath (much faster downhill on these things remember) - it's going to require either a motorcycle (NSW police motorcycles are wide and to endanger foot traffic is something a court would be ruling on) or alternatively a push bike (the ones I am worried about being fined by).
The width of the motorcycles means when they get on the footpath (and as I've mentioned above, one has chased me a short distance on the footpath), it's a risk they need to bear. I transfer from my motorcycle to the scooter for the final part of my trip into work and simply carry the EU passport from that point.
If a cycle cop does stop me, it will be "parli italiano?", "parli italiano?", "non parla inglese" from me and let them issue the full swathe of fines under my Italian identity. As I do have a valid NSW riders licence, that will be the first charge I will defend in court and seek all charges for the incident to be thrown out.
@MorriJ: LOL i honestly love this story of running away from cops hahahhahah but you have to have balls to do that. Risky if they catch you..
@Praeto: It's such a pity - these are a much lesser evil for transport than many now use. The size of the wheels is what really limits the speed. People on scooters, bicycles, skateboards - whatever, they're out there in the open mostly unprotected. This is why so many car drivers take chances or drive selfishly - because they are relatively safe. All these other modes of transport should be encouraged. Talk about nanny states.
I will ride it illegally if its drop to sub $400 lol.
I'd rather wait to for the pro/gen 2 to be available to Australia which would make this even cheaper.

The new one is heavier. This version is about as heavy as I'd want it do be. Its fast enough, goes long enough between charges and don't need a display anyway
Also, Pro is still capped at same top speed (~25kmph)
By the time Gen 2 comes to Australia, Gen 5 would have just been released.
I'm 182cm, about 83kg and this model is more than adequate, even up hill (not super steep of course), my morning commute see's me cruise straight past many cyclists, only the hardcore lycra wearers will overtake me. The pro/gen 2 would only be required if you have a bit more weight and need the extra grunt, although the speedo would be handy! The pro is also just over a KG heavier, not too bad but the 14kg's of the current model is starting to feel a bit heavy after going from outside my building, through security and up the lifts to my desk. Just my 2 cents. Happy riding!

15km/hr limit sounds a bit crippling though. Even 25km/hr feels slow at times on a straight smooth bike path.
Limiting them to foot paths only also highlights how poor a state they're in. They should also be legal on roads with designated bike lanes. Just like normal bikes.
I first saw the electric scooter craze when I was in ATX in November. Bird/Lime/Uber scooters everywhere. Was surprised with the zero helmet requirement but also the fact that the Uber Scooters in particular were pulling 18-20mph and road use was encouraged.
Was a very easy way to see the city. Loved it.
I'm looking for one that is easy for me to drag around. Carrying 12.5 kgs when walking in the train station may not be a wise thing. How is this compared to Segway's options?

I have an ES4 and love it, but the ES2 is 12.5kg and the ES4 (with extra battery) is 14kg. I don't carry it much, but when I need to I just fold it up and wheel it around on the front wheel. Segway also has solid tyres which for me near bikeways is superior IMO, but this is debatable.
I think they have wheels so you shouldn't have to carry it! :)
According to the news 2 out of 3 people in Perth dont want e-scooters, must be the same people who also thought there was going to be 25 hours in the day when they voted against daylight savings…..nanny state over here :(
HAVING daylight savings is just as much (if not more) of a nanny state. There are nights where it's 9pm, even later… and it's still daylight. You eat dinner an hour later because 6pm feels like 2pm - but you're hungry again before bed wanting a fourth meal. It's ridiculous. The days are ALREADY longer in summer. So there's no need for meddling with the time, so you're putting your kids to bed with the Sun still burning through the window!

Hard to believe that when in a previous post on the same scooter you said the fine was $2000 in NSW/VIC.
These are safer than people riding bikes on the footpath which they're allowed to do. Not to mention that it's good for the environment, helps ease congestion on the roads and is generally a pretty cheap method of travel. People like you suck. I know you're only doing a job but maybe you should turn a blind eye to stuff like this. Go catch the real criminals!
Nah, that would be too hard and dangerous. Scooter ridders are much easier. Just like I have witnessed so many drug dealings in Richmond, Victoria, while doing a short walk along the street. I have seen them doing a quick deal meters away from the police officers who just seems to have a blind eyes for them. Maybe too much paperwork and court appearances that this law is not enforced with enthusiasm.
Police actively target the people who are least likely to be able to fight back. Drug dealers? Gang members? Violent offenders? Well, they all sound pretty dangerous. Cops might get hurt if they try to stop actual crime. Police would rather just take the paycheck and harass beggars in city. I saw eight of them mobbing one homeless guy a few months ago. Police are pathetic.

At $5 per commute to work a day this will take 108 days to pay back, and be slightly faster. Great investment if I don't get fined.
About $8 on Melbourne PT, I did similar calcs, plus I'm not shoulder to shoulder with strangers. The real kicker is that my 5km commute takes 35-40 minutes door to door via PT but only 22 minutes on the scooter, and I take a slightly longer way to avoid busy streets. Most fun you'll have commuting to work too.
You haven't subtracted what it costs you to get to work now.
Good point: 7800mAh battery @ 37.41 volts = 291.8wh or 0.292kWh x 27.56c (average cost per kWH for Victoria) = 8 cents per charge… LOL
Other costs would be wear and tear, I have two replacement tyres. Let's say with the extra tyres the whole unit has a two year life span with heavy usage (200 days per year for example). $520 / 400 = $1.30 per trip + 8 cents of of power…
i.e. you buy a new one every two years and you're still saving $7.42 ($8.80 daily myki ticket - $1.38) every time you use it! Winning!
Charge the scooter at work to save the 8 cents!
