    Work with ipad? Micro sim?

    • Depends on the SIM provided in the package. Newer Optus SIM pack comes with a SIM that can be used as a normal SIM or a micro SIM (though if you use it as a micro SIM, I reckon you will need a SIM converter to use it as a normal SIM).

  • Great deal, thanks!

  • ^Data Usage is counted in 10MB increments and includes uploads and downloads

    is that normal?

    • no.

    • normal for optus, not normal for everybody else. But if the device you are using can keep the connection alive for an extended period. It may not matter as much. E.g. when I was using my N86 with skype, Skype keeps the connection alive indefintely, so its all the one session.

that cant be right, they mean 10kb surely.

Telstra now does 1mb increments. And given the purported 'value' of this plan, it's not surprising.

But I still think it looks like a ripper of a deal.

Over 12 months with Telstra, you'd pay $150 for 10gb.

Over 12 months with Optus on this deal, you'd be $78 for 12 gb plus get two modems?

        • If you have a smartphone you can get a 12GB data pack on your phone plan for $69 per month with Telstra. You can cancel (the data pack) any time.

        • +1

I think you misunderstood my post.

It's $150 and $78 for the entire year, not per month. And you spend the 10/12gb over the 12 month period.

          This is prepaid, not postpaid.

So close Optus, raised only a grin not a smile.
Remove the uploads and the 10mb increments and ya might be cooking.

  • ^Data Usage is counted in 10MB increments and includes uploads and downloads

Does this mean if I use this to check my email once every few hours and disconnect in between, that uses up 10MB each time?

    • Yes, but from T&C
Usage: is counted in 10MB increments and includes both uploads and downloads.
First 30MB per day charged at 10MB

I wouldn't suggest anybody to go with Optus mobile broadband now…. ever since last October, their broadband is shocking… timing out every 5-6 mins.. due to network congestion. You cannot even get on at peak hours… you will be timing out like nobody's business.. Surprisingly, Vodafone as crap as they are, their prepaid mobile broadband is actually more stable than Optus.

I thought I was the only one until I checked whirlpool forums… There are heaps of complains about their time out and it does not seem like Optus will be doing anything about it anytime soon.

  • i've been with most major carriers a few times.. never any problems except virgin in one area, and they refunded me and released me from the contract after i moaned and threatened to bring it to whirlpool.

i was having issues with my current vodafone service until i started using a program called MWconn.. it's awesome.

once i get this device, i'll be currently using vodafone 1.5g/month, TPG 1gb/month(via phone2pc), Optus 6g/6month.

once the period ends I doubt I'll stay.
I'm sure i can unlock the device too.. without waiting 12 months.

  • E1762 is a good usb 3G modem (HSUPA is supported - not that it is that useful for home users).

Unlock: http://www.a-zgsm.com/huawei.php (or you can use one of those Huawei unlock code calculator programs).

$39 - for 6 months - including modem - good deal, thanks OP.

  • Excellent deal, with both the long expiry and fair gbs ~ now we'll just have to see about the coverage. crosses fingers

  • here is a link to a review of the E1762 modem which appears +ve, but the Optus network itself is not so good: http://www.zdnet.com.au/optus-e1762-usb-modem-339297961.htm

With the 10MB increment issue, if you are in a dodgy signal area, it may pay to somehow lock the modem to using 2G speeds, to avoid it switching modes and possibly starting the next 10MB increment before you have used the last one.

I thought the 6 month data expiry with the included modem was the good bit

  • im using telstra nexg g prepaid modem 400-500kn sec, yeah it might be expensive 10gb for $150, but least u get for what u pay, unlike other guys.

  • I signed up Amaysim and paid $10 for the 1GB data pack and my wifey is complaining it is a
slow and painful grind. Facebook takes forever to load , just too congested.

Amaysim runs on the Optus network…

  • My advice is do NOT get this if u have dropouts. I use to chew down about 300mb per day b/c of dropouts, even though i try to stay connected for a long time (i do h/w and gaming a lot nowadays). And no, i did not download. I just stayed connected to WC3 and surfed the net.

  • Sorry guys, dumb Q but if I was to purchase this does the 6 months validity start from when I first use it or from when I purchase it?

    • First use - but the SIM has an expiry date.

      • Thank you! :)

  • Probably another dumb question here but if I was to buy a couple of these and put them away until next year when my daughter starts uni do you think they will still be able to be activated or do they expire ?

    • The SIM generally has an expiry date of 10-12 months. You need to activate it before the expiry date. If you get 2, then realistically, you need to activate one of them 6 months from now - unless the expiry date for one of them is > 12 months.

  • •Unlimited~ access to Facebook®, Twitter® and MySpace™ within Australia

Does that mean FB, Twitter and MySpace are unmetered?

    • I believe it does, possibly even Ebay too

  • Any further discount/referrer codes to make this an even better deal? Thanks!

  • When do you need to activate it by in order to get 6 gigs and 6 months?

    • December 2011.

    • Make that 1 December 2011 (or 30 November 2011) to be safe.
The discount is probably due to these packs have an expiry date of 6 months.

  • i bought one to use until expired, then unlock and use exetel 2c per meg option.
    $5 per month, 2c Mb

i cant see any other cheaper plans about

  • Got mine, expired 1/12/11, microsim.
Forgot how bad optus prepay is : massive effort to order, register, activate, get "my account".
Must give address etc multiple times. And which plan was I supposed to select?
Security is a joke. You can choose a strong password, but then it asks for "secret" questions like the last 4 digits of credit card, a city, pet etc. Still cannot find my remaining data amount. I never had this trouble with Voda, Telstra, …

    • Oh I hate Optus. I can connect after activating.
Some websites work. Others give infinite redirect loops. Looks like zero balance.

      Anyone got this working?
