    ohh noes…a cotd post!

  • +12

Typical COTD, selling the wifi dongle separately for $30, when AFAIK the unit is meant to come with one OOTB from the distributor!

Price gouging bastards, sorry OP but neg for COTD just being their slimy selves again!!!

[edit] I wouldn't believe that RRP either, CrazyStu has them for $499 with the dongle! ;)

    • +3

I voted you up because I agree COTD are slimy

      • why would you post a cotd deal if you think that way (just out of curiosity)

        • +14

Just because I dont like COTD or have any interest in this product does not mean that the info is of value to someone.
If someone feels it meets their needs and is a bargain, then the entire point of this website is covered.

        • +2

          Whoa. Good answer.

        • And that, my friend, is what OzBargain is all about.

    • +2

Stewballs do you understand what RRP is???

      RRP - Recommended Retail Price.

It doesnt mean average or anyones price.

Just because CrazyStu sells it for $499 then thats the RRP , Crazystu's price is a discounted price.

You have verified its a "bargain" as this is $100 below CrazyStu's price. (AND CS also says its RRP is $699)

      http://crazystu.com.au/Magic_TV_MTV3700TD_Freeview_1TB_Twin_…

We know you hate COTD, and probably with Justification. BUT you have made your point so often.

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/444945

If you want to continue with this personal vendetta of deal censorship, go somewhere else or take it up in the forums, and convince the rest that this retailer should be banned from Ozbargain.

Vote removed as your own argument shows its a deal.

And according to distributor the wifi is a "bonus", if you by from them and maybe its my misunderstanding of the meaning they are trying to portray. If it was "standard" with the package then that would mean saying that it is a "bonus" wouldn't be true

Ok pete, no need to be so vitriolic yourself mate!

Yes, I know I deliberately used the term RRP incorrectly, just because I was too lazy to type "the quoted distributor dealspace's reference selling price".

Being pedantic about the terminology is pointless, since we all know I was referring to this in the OP:

        http://www.dealspace.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=12

…most people knew what I meant.

That said, it does not negate the point that COTD is fudging the books by removing a bundled article and reselling it with the device. Do you consider this to be acceptable practice?

Why allow comments on bargains at all if we're not free to point out deceptive or misleading behaviour? Sometimes it's about more than money mate, it's about ethics. It seems you're the one proffering censorship, not me; I just stated a fact related to this deal and you've removed my right to vote on it! My understanding is that misleading or deceptive behaviour is a valid reason for a neg vote, and at least half a dozen others, including the OP agreed with me!

I don't mind if COTD is straight-up with a deal, but removing bundled articles to artificially deflate the price (even if it is cheaper than the competition) only to resell them to the same customer is still poor form, and needs to be pointed out! That's not a vendetta, it's simply commenting on this deal, that's just commonsense!

FWIW, all of the reviews mentioned the bundled wifi dongle, the two are evidently firmware paired & will only work with each other AFAIK, so calling it a bonus is simply a matter of semantics. If it leaves the distributor that way, surely that's the way it should remain for retail sale??? I'm pretty sure FT & the ACCC are clear on that kind of thing?

I do find it ironic though, that you've chosen to come in here and delete my one (possibly valid) negative vote in a rather florid manner, unbecoming of a mod IMHO; yet you've ignored the 13 in this thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44969 many of which are completely baseless…one has to wonder about your motivations for that pete? Have I offended you in some way as to warrant your 'special' attention?

Sorry maybe the ??? rather ? indicated attack, its was really puzzlement.

          1. We are cracking down on useless negative voting, used by people constantly. ie . Do it once or twice and we "assume" its just the heat of the moment etc, but constantly do it incorrectly, then we will stop it and even penalise members. Its becoming as you show with you reference link, rampant. Its been updated in the rules, and we wont catch everyone. Negative votes are designed to hide deals if there is consensus, so should be used with that understanding.

          2. I dont think this vote is valid. The distibutor says this is a bonus. Yes its a mute point - what is bonus. Plus its a $30 item and the deal is more than $100 off, lets look at the net value difference.

          3. I never censored your comments. Its just the vote. My comments were targeted on why you voted, which yes unfortunately is linked to your arguments. Probably never would have made any comment without the attached vote. I do not have an issue with you when its

commenting on this deal, that's just commonsense!

You often make very wise and helpful comments here. Personally I do value your contribution, even though we can disagree. As a mod, I have the policeman role, and I try like all coppers to keep my personal views out of things. I use judgement etc, but I am a human and also unfortunately writing is an inadequate way of true expression (unless I guess I was a famous author which I can assure you I am not)

FYI I wouldn't buy from COTD, Ozbargain shows me far better deals to me personally, but thats my personal point of view. I look at each deal based on what it may mean to others, and our audience here covers many different people.

Damn, I had a nice erudite reply typed & my router went A over T when I went to post it…the condensed version is:

No worries, no harm done. My votes really are based on each deal, no grand plan.

We can agree to disagree on some stuff, rationales for votes included.

Yes, definitely hard to delineate comments from votes at times.

I probably overreacted, I should be in bed & not sleep deprived; so my comprehension is probably not 100% anyway; thus no hard feelings, have a good day.

I'm gonna stop harrassing you guys for a few hours, I'm on a sickie so gonna sleep my flu off! Do I hear a collective sigh of relief? :)

          big yay!! :)

    • This is not true. Crazystu are selling the MTV3700 which is a freeview model. THe 4000 is a lesser model with no Freeview EPG option. no point comparing the 4000 to the 3700 because they are completely different.

      • Good point and this was raised by another member via the Report button. Have edited the post and agree that the deal is less attractive, guess Stew and I missed that part of the difference, this explains the missing wireless connection thingy.

But when will people understand about the negative vote button. The reporter felt they would get into trouble for negging this because it had the wrong specs.

Thats a legitimate negative vote. The Stewballs "incident" was because of the COTD blanket negging, which wasn't legitimate. Read the discussion between the both of us.

Legitimate negative votes are always left alone.

        see http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

        Thanks

      • The 4000 is actually the superior model as it allows ad skipping in 30 second intervals; the 3700 only allows fast forwarding (as limited by the Freeview branding).

  • Ozpete,
Do What I do, ignore comments like that.
The comments I value the most are constructive ones.
I appreciate anyone who puts a effort in finding a bargain and posting it.

  • I don't know if I'd be paying that kinda money for an unknown model when there are some good alternative tried and tested ones around for similar or not much more.

  • How is this box compared to beyonwiz PVR?

    • I'd be getting the $299 Beyonwiz a few posts back and putting a 1Tb drive in before I got this one. Beyonwiz, Topfield, Tivo (maybe Strong - I don't know enough about them).

      • thanks for your replying. Beyonwiz deal sounds a good one

        • My personal experience with them was bad, bought 2 units both failed, had both replaced, both those failed took them back to store and got refund, whilst the handling of the process by Beyonwiz support was excellent the product quality was very poor

  • I've tried quite a few types of PVR and if you can afford it go for a good one. Considering how much you use it (if you watch much TV) - a good one is a pleasure, bad ones are annoying. I only recommended the Beyonwiz refurb as a similar price, but I'd actually recommend the better Topfields (that do 4 channel recording).

    • Unfortunately, it's hard to find a "good" PVR as it mostly depends on the firmware. This Magic TV looks good, has plenty of features, but noone really knows how stable (does it lock up or miss recordings) or how user friendly (is it reseponsive to button presses?) it is.

  • Well I took the punt and purchased this item -and the wifi adapter. The mtv4000pvr is actually the better version IMO. The wifi adapter is an optional extra (the MTV3700TD comes with the adapter).
From what I've read about most PVRs the problems are with freeview. I don't want freeview! I just want a twin tuner with 1tb, skip feature, edit recordings and be able to copy recordings to usb and use the wifi. And I feel it meets my needs and is a bargain! As long as it does what is says it does…

  • annoying - though advertised as the 4000 - they've sent me a 3700.
