First time poster, please hurt me.

I was looking for a tablet and was settling for the Samsung Tab A 10.1 model 2019 (about $500) until I came across this (lucky I could even top up with my last year's ebay discounted gift cards). I was looking at around $400 price range but I hope I did good taking one of them the S4 thinking it would be more future proof.

Knowing that Hardly Normal sells it at an inflated price of $1179, I thought that I'd compromise a little and get it used.

I don't know if that may help you or not, hope it does (hope also I made a good call buying this before seeing the deal on Ozbargain or hope not that people didn't post it because it was a ripoff …).

  • Horrible deal for a used tablet.

    • Is it? Please refer me to a better deal, I might be able to cancel my order if I find better

    • A horrible tablet anyway. I had one and didn't like it.

      • What did you get instead?

S10+ big enough for me atm

        • Was actually a work tablet. Didn't like it. Didn't use it much at all.

'First time poster, please hurt me.'

    Strange request but ok.

YOU'RE A THIRD RATE DUELIST WITH A FOURTH RATE DECK.

  • Seems decent for used.
    Tablets are so expensive now.

Wife has a S2 and it's great but it was around $700 new back a few years ago.

I bought an S1 for my mum for around $350 new with the good guys Ebay 20% off promo. Looking for a replacement and all tablets are around $650+ wtf??

Is there any reason why you wouldn’t just get a cellular iPad? You can buy a new iPad at pretty much every price point between $450 and $3000 (!) if you really wanted to spend that much. iOS is arguably the superior tablet OS compared to Android; its not even a contest considering the app selection and support. Unless you’re planning to do real work on it, then you might as well get the Surface Go.

My tablet of choice for your price point would be a lightly used cellular 10.5 iPad Pro.

      But it's an iPad.

    • I have an old Ipad air and it's brilliant (even if I'm mainly an android user).

      The reason I got this:
My father is bad with technology and his eyesight is getting worse, I needed a 10 inch tablet that could do calls but the LTE ipads don't have that functionality. I thought he could just give up his cellphone as he doesn't even use it as a smartphone, but he is using an old 8 inch galaxy tab S all the time to watch TV, netflix or youtube. It's really an overkill to get this tablet for his use (I planned to get him a Tab A at first) but we don't live close at all so I haven't been home for the last 4 years … I plan to set it all up and send it to him and hope that it would be as future proof as possible so he doesn't need to relearn as much as possible.

He lives in France and spends a lot of time at the hospital for health reasons (so that's why no telco deals and I needed the LTE)

        Surely just use Whatsapp/Wechat/Line/FaceTime/FB Messenger/Skype?
I mean iOS even has Google Duo lol.

iOS is the simplest OS to use, very easy to maintain and has a proven track record of updates.

My grandmother uses a cellular iPad mini 4 to call friends and do pretty much everything; for her its big enough to see comfortably and small enough to fit in her purse when going out. I have set up a Skype account with a calling subscription for unlimited calling to any number in the world. It’s old but still runs so smooth and runs the latest iOS.

        • +2

If the idea is to replace a phone, why complicate things by relying on Skype for calls? You have to pay extra for a SkypeIn number so the hospital or pharmacy or non-techy friends can call, and Skype specifically says you cannot use Skype for emergency calls. If he's having health issues, that would be a bit of a concern.

Him being used to the Galaxy S is good too, there's little to relearn. It's frustrating trying to teach someone something new over the phone. :)

          • @eug: I couldn’t have said it better, pinpointed all the concerns I had

        • +1

I do really appreciate the input, I actually considered cancelling my order following what you said but then I recalled that my old man lives in the countryside and it’s not uncommon that the network would switch to 3G. Plus he had a galaxy tab S for the last few years, he is a creature of habit and as I won’t be there to show him, I think the easiest would keep the S4 (I know that IOS is easy as pie but few things like widgets make life a lot easier for certain people).

On the other side, I’ll be replacing my old ipad air and i’ll either go with the air3 or the pro 10.5

If you need a data plan, it'd be worth considering getting it from Optus.

For $45/month over 24 months ($1080), you'll get a brand-new tablet with 2-year warranty, and 10GB of data per month. That works out to $16/month for the data plan if you assume the tablet cost $679.

If you don't need 4G at all, I think it'd be worth waiting for another deal to come along.

Bro just buy a Mi Pad 4 Plus for 450 ish!

    • +1

I thought about it and even if it has one of the best value money/performance, the lack of official support isn't suitable for what I want to do, too bad it's not getting an official release in australia

  • This is a great tablet, just wish it has 845 and 6gb of ram. It runs Samsung Dex. You can do a lot with Ubuntu
