CTEK CT5 - 3.8A Battery Charger $55.30 @ Repco

150

Clearance deal on the Ctek CT5, note this isn't the normal MXS line, although I am unsure of the difference but seems to be optimised for start stop vehicles. Currently half or less than the price from elsewhere that I have seen. Was available at a number of my nearby stores for click and collect when I ordered mine.

edit, a bit further research leads me to think that the CT5 is a basically a user simplified version of the MXS ie it doesn't have as many user options but is designed as more of a plug and play option.

Personally I would definitely buy CTEK over anything else. I haven’t had a projecta branded charger, but I had a supercheap battery charger that was rated higher than my ctek and was on paper better. But if the battery was quite low, it wouldn’t charge the battery and instead just gave an error saying the battery was faulty. I then bought a new $300 battery for my car based on the charger saying it was faulty. But then the same thing happened to my motorbike battery. But that was in warranty so I took it back to Battery World and they tested it and the battery was completely fine, just a little low in charge, which you’d think a battery charger would be good for. So I took that battery charger back to SCA for store credit and I bought a CTEK. Both batteries charged fine. So now I have a spare $300 car battery that works fine, but wasn’t necessary. At least I learned my lesson and will never buy a non-CTEK charger again. They’re celebrated for a reason.

      • I wouldn’t rule out the cheaper chargers, they have their use. Had a battery that’s so flat none of my CTEK could charge it, ended up building some charge with an el cheapo charger before any of them could detect the battery.

In this case, it often works to parallel the dead battery with another battery to get the charger going on the dead one, and then after a while, remove the extra battery.

          • @tryagain: Nice idea. But who has more batteries than they need laying about. Other than rhino015 :p

People don't buy them like they do eneloops.

  • ISS batteries are designed to never fully be charged so yes this would be perfect for them if you're leaving the car to sit for a while but terrible for all other types unless you're giving it a top up charge.

    • Care to expand? I think it dosesn't work the way you are guessing it does.

      • I know it does.

It's called partial state of charge operation and it greatly extends the lifespan of specifically designed batteries in specific applications. eg. ISS batteries in ISS vehicles.

        • I was referring to the charger, not ISS cars.

I hate ISS cars so so so so much. YMMV

Can't afford one of those fancy cars but good to know I'm not missing anything!

  • Noob question but is this Ctek and the linked Projecta fine for connecting to the battery whilst still connected to the car?

    • Should be fine.

  • Stupid question here. I have a 8ah battery in batterybox. Which DC-DC charger will be the best for this? My budget is not massive.

    • DC-DC, so you want to charge it from the car?

      • Yes that is correct

        • only 8AH? what type of battery?

          • @tryagain: oops, should be 80ah

            • @Boertjie: Best bang for your buck is probably the Projecta IDC25 bit of a length of string question thought to be honest.

Depending on Car and Battery, a simple VSR might be better value though.

    • C-tek DC to DC charger is great and has a solar panel controller built in… I use one no problems. https://www.ctek.com/products/on-board/d250sa
