Seems like a nice deal given the price of the phone, not an expert, hope this benefits someone!

          Not really local

          • @Fobsessive: Local enough

          • @Fobsessive: Why not? Kogan operates in AU by Aussies

            • +2

@DannyBoy: Not exactly. Last time I purchased from Dick Smith online the invoice came from Kogan Hong Kong limited, no GST applicable. I little bit deceiving as effectively this made the $1000 DSE purchase the same cost to me as spending $1100 locally, being a business that can claim back GST (which I couldn't from Kogan HK). After realising this, the deal seemed less appealing and not far short of JB HiFi at the time.

To add further salt to the transaction, I received a refurbished unit; it even came with "genuine refurbished product" literature. Initally doubted by Kogan support until I provided proof, they then offered a $50 e-store credit?!? After some heated correspondence they refunded a couple of hundred which I was happy enough with given I was already using the device in my business and it has worked since.

However I also have a Zenfone and would recommend this deal as a good phone for they money.

I wouldn't even say don't deal with DSE/Kogan as ultimately I was satisfied enough with the outcome, but be aware they are not your local Dick Smith Electronics of the 80s/90s. The way they operate they are basically a foreign seller selling grey imports to the Australian market and I would consider any manufacturer warranty claim a fruitless endeavour. Not quite buyer beware, but very much "be aware".

              • @buffalo bill: They charge GST last time I bought from them, you must be talking about an old purchase.

              • +1

@buffalo bill: Yep, that's Kogan/current-DSE's drop-shipping business model. Their "Aussie" website is mostly a front for selling items warehoused in Asia. Those international items did not have GST until the recent change to GST thanks to Gerry Harvey.

Looks great for the price. Snapdragon 630.

    Is Android Oreo available?

    • It is the system already upgrade Oreo now.

  • +11

    More specs:

    32GB storage.
    3GB ram.
    3300 MAH battery.
    Snapdragon 630.

    • Resolution?

  • Why is this model 3gb? The lowest spec'd ZE554KL on GSM arena is 4gb?

    • +2

ZE554KL is the newer model 2017, this deal is even older, more like the Gen 3.
probably better than those supermarket phones by fair bit

      • This is definitely the same Aug. 2017 ZE554KL with 3GB RAM (probably BR model Kimovil website, only band 40/2300 seems be deleted from 4Gb model); there is no "gen 3", it's a Zenfone 4. I have the exact model. Oreo 8.0, security patch 01.03.19. May get Android 9 in June/July.

        • So you own the 3gb/32gb model?

If you don't mind me asking, what's your opinion of it? How's the battery life? Much bloatware?

          • +19

@Suit: Not a lot of bloat. I use Nova Launcher, can't comment on ZenUI. Arrived 7.0 with OTA to 8.0. Can't seem to install Apps on SD card and I've used 50% of the 32Gb internal memory so far. Good construction, glass back. Fast fingerprint reader. Dual sound; earpiece/bottom speaker. Cameras with "pro" mode, the main reason I bought the phone: one 12MP and 8MP wide angle, the latter is very useful. Great value device if you're not hung up on bezels top and bottom. I don't game so can't comment on that. Battery life seems good, easily over a day with medium use. *edit: can confirm NFC, need to touch front top left, unusually.

          • @Suit: You can always use ADB to remove bloatware if you want to spend the time to.

      • I owned ZE554KL 64/4GB models, yeah the back looks the same

    • It is not AU version. 3GB was probably a cheaper version for India or some such place.
Other specs match. For $149+ I would not complain.

      • Anyone can confirm this does have NFC capability if it's not AU version?

      • Maybe. But if some Moto G5+ were sold here with only 3GB ram as well as Nokia 6 & 6.1 also with 3GB for $350+,

then this Asus only having 3GB is pretty decent for this price.

    • +1

This model comes in three ram and storage configurations: 3gb/32gb, 4gb/64gb, 6gb/64gb.

  • +10

It’s about the same price on eBay (factoring in GST)…

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-ZenFone-4-ZE554KL-3GB-32GB-…

The dual sim is 4G/3G, not 4G/4G….But at this price, it’s tempting for a spare phone.

    • +12

Oh! I just realised DS charges a delivery fee - so the eBay deal is cheaper! $135.99 + GST = $149.60 delivered.

      • Gr8 find mate!

      • But Delivery Times - Estimated between Wed. 8 May. and Wed. 5 Jun.

        • +3

If you purchase off eBay from that seller (like I did), you'll receive within a week via DHL.

          • @[Deactivated]: Also warranty is worse than Kogan which might be an issue with phones that have parts that might fail on you.

Does kogan warrant for 2 years now or one?

      • Any active codes we can use on ebay at the moment?

      • +1

So does this mean this is "the price" for a phone with these specs nowadays and I can chilax until my current phone breaks?

I might eventually get a folding phone for this money…;)

      • We can not guarantee that the information on this page is 100% correct. Each phone have different operating systems when it out of factory, actual specification and color are based on the real product.

        lol.

      • So tempting, until I see the note that Boost Mobile is non-compatible network. Is there anyone able to use this phone with Boost Mobile yet?

        • Where is that note?

          • +2

@pao2x: It's in the description (on ebay) but sounds it's Boost Mobile in US, not Australia. Was panic to see the familiar logo though.

    • +2

Too much for a spare phone. Personally, a spare phone is only used for a few days or weeks until a replacement can be shipped to me.

I have a $39 prepaid Optus phone as a spare.

    • ebay offer is sold out now and for all of today was only available in white.

  • +4

Had the zenfone 2. the lack of update support from Asus means I'd likely never go back to them. build quality was questionable too. mediocre camera.

    • +2

My 2 years old zenfone 3 is not able to focus at all when taking video.

      • +3

Had the same problem with my zenfone. The autofocus just died one day and the camera became useless.

Other than that it was a terrific phone, I didn't mind their ZenUI either.

    • +2

Had one too, was amazing for the first year then went straight downhill after that. Fully died just before the two year mark.

    • +2

I also had the Zenfone 2. Loved the buggery out of it. Then it suddenly and unexpectedly died one day. Still, got 3 years out of it… The lack of support in year 3 was making me look for a new one, I must say.

    • I had the ZenFone 2 Deluxe also. Was great until the screen went all shitty after I dropped it.
Not having backlit directory home, back and menu buttons was the biggest pain though

  • pretty weak specs but… it has an AMOLED screen.
Should be a nice phone so long as you don't play intense games.

    Oh that's confusing. Says,
    Bright 600-nit Super IPS+ display
    5.5" AMOLED capacitive touchscreen

    • +3

The specs aren't weak for the price, quite the opposite. This one has the 600 nit IPS, it is actually a really nice screen, high brightness, punchy yet accurate colours and even the contrast ratio is very good for an IPS. In this particular instance the IPS is overall better than the AMOLED (which is used in the Pro version of the phone), the pentile pixels in the AMOLED decrease sharpness over the IPS and more crucially the AMOLED version doesn't get as bright as the IPS.

    • +1

This model doesn't have an AMOLED screen i believe
      https://www.gsmarena.com/asus_zenfone_4_ze554kl-8782.php

  • Wow that's impressive! Similar spec to my Nokia 6.1!

    • +1

Nokia 6.1 now comes with Android 9 Pie though

  • +3

I have Zenfone 3 and 5,these are very good phones, 4 is also good work. Only at 2, it was very bad (Intel's fault)

  • +1

    this or sharp aquos?

    • +1

I am a big fan of the Sharp (from what i have read only) but I would take this hands down. Only questiom I have about it is how good the camera is and if the focus issues raised above are very common.

From the below comment the camera is hoop enough

  • +4

I had one for a couple years. Excellent phone, at this price is a steal. The screen is one of the best 1080p LCD displays you will find, bright and vibrant. The CPU punches well above it's price point, high clocked octa core will never lag on you. The camera is also competitive with phones in the $300 range. They do have a history of failing, like the speaker might die etc, they are not particularly durable, they just pack excellent specs

  • +1

I recently purchased the 6gb/64gb model which I'm happy with so far. Imported from Hong Kong (or possibly Taiwan) and can confirm that NFC works.

But prior to that I had a Zenfone 3 which was one of the best phones I ever owned until the display recently died after around 12 months. Now I'm nervous about the lifespan of the ZF4…

  • +1

Great find. My friend has same one. He is very happy with it.
    Ordered one for myself.

  • +2

It's a good price but don't hold your breath for any long term updates. There's pretty much no 3rd party development for this device so no custom ROMs.
It's most likely not going to get the pie update according to this list: https://www.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-android-pie-upgr…

  • Looks like a great deal, but I was just wondering - does this model have a fast charging battery or not?

From what I read on gsmarena it doesn't (only the Pro and the Max have fast charging batteries).

Also, there is only two card slots?

Again from gsmarena, it says that the second slot is a hybrid slot (which I assume is either a second SIM card, OR a memory card, so you can't have a dual SIM phone if you also want to expand the memory)?

  • Best Battery life based on my experience

  • Thx, bought one for the mobile myki.

  • +1

Still some stock on ebay/AE with the 3GB/32GB variant being great value:

    US$100 SD630 3GB/32GB
    **US$140 SD630 4GB/64GB
    US$172 SD660 6GB/64GB

    **compare against the US$140 Sharp Aquos S3 SD630 4GB/64GB

    • Interesting that the first link says dual SIM is GSM only.
