    • Who are you with, and how much do you pay?

      Edit - didn’t neg btw.

      • AussieBB $99 with 1 month free trail.

        • +14

OK. First up, your personal speed is an irrelevant comparator. A Kogan customer on FTTP close the exchange may well exceed 83mbps, and an AussieBB customer far from the node may experience worse.

A fair comparson would compare advesterised typical evening speeds - Kogan’s at 83mbps and Aussie’s at a respectable 90mbps. If we include your free month, over nine month’s you’ve paid an average of $88/mth or $0.978/mbps. On Kogan, you’d pay $75.90/mth or $0.914/mbps. If we’re working on bang for buck in terms of speed, Kogan is the better deal by a fair margin - and that’s without considering the free modem. Maybe time to switch?

          • +9

@Ordinance: FTTP doesn't have such limitations on having to be close to an exchange to get better speed then some one a little further away. It's not a copper line connection. You could be kilometres away and still get the same speed as it's a fully fibre optic connection straight to the premises. Fibre optic doesn't suffer line connection degrade.

You are thinking of FTTN which uses a copper phone line from a node to the premises which the further away from it the connection gets more crappy due to signal quality loss.

            • -2

@hollykryten: Unless there are no interruptions in the fibre is like you say, as a matter of fact between the telephone exchange and your house the fibre is joint with other fibre more than once, and at every joint you lose something exactly like the copper.

              • @Laziofogna: That's not remotely how fiber works lol. It's on or off that's it.

                • @JAKEBAB: Nope, the light travels in the fibre, to have perfection you need a fibre without interruptions from start to your home and that’s impossible. Everytime you join two pieces of fibre you have some loss, and if the join is not properly done you have more loss. So don’t be absolute when you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

                  • @Laziofogna: Of course but that is not an interruption, an interruption would imply loss of service.

        • +2

Lol so many ABB pushers on here and whirlpool seems very sus they pop up instantly after any NBN post.

    • +5

Isn't that number pretty useless? It's dependent on so many factors like location, modem, number of other users in area etc.

      • +3

        Yes.

Although if you are lucky enough to have fibre before Turnbull paid Telstra 60 billion dollars to continue offering Australia third world internet you know what you are getting. Possible true for HFC as well.

Bad news for the rest of Australia: now the (profanity) retards at the ACCC are talking about 5G wireless as solving everything so expect another collossal waste of money on top of the 100 billion already wasted to recieve wifi instead of broadband.

        • They must have the same idea as Huawei. Putting 5G in their 8K TVs.

      • Not as useless as their customer service number. My connection is good though 50mbps and doesnt suffer much congestion.

  • What modem do you get?

    • From a previous thread it looks to be a TP-Link VR500v

      • +3

Seeing as all NBN suppliers charge almost the same, which is the company that supplies the best modem router?

        • +1

Good question..I want to know as well..

      • +1

        I can confirm this, I got the TP-Link VR500v.

  • +8

I just ported to Kogan from abb and can confirm I get around the 75-85mbps at peak times.
Used to get 87mbps on abb.

Called their call centre to query my bill and found them to be good and hold times were only a minute or two at lunch time.

I'd say well worth the $20+ a month reduction in cost.

    *Your mileage may vary.

Just wanted to post mt experience.

One thing that may be annoying to some is the port completed before I received my modem. However in my case it was no biggie as they use the same authentication method as abb so I noticed no service interruption.

    • How did you manage the abb notice period to avoid overlapping months $$ ?

    • Yep that 2mbps is not worth the 20-25$ PM

    • how long do you have to wait for it to port over ? or is it instantaneous ?

      • +1

        Usually within the hour.

        Sometimes faster.

      • I signed up on kogans website on friday morning. its sunday night and I haven't heard anything yet…

        • Ring em up asks them what's going on.

Some connections take more than 48 hours but more than 5 business days and somethings wrong.

  • Anyone else who is with ABB starting to get slower peak times? I'm starting to see much slower speeds from 7pm-10pm.

    • Have you checked the CVC for your POI to see if there is an issue?

    • +1

Nope still get my full 100mbps speeds when doing downloads of an evening,

    • Yea getting around 37 on a 50 plan. Not fussed about speed but i may give kogasn 50 a try and save a bit

  • Previous deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/441353

Seems to be on going at the moment

  • Currently have optus nbn with fetch tv, can you still use fetch tv / optsu sport etc with a different provider ?

    • Yes. Any internet provider.

If you have some Optus SIMs you can watch sport unbilled.

  • What does this mean? New Development Fee: This $300 will be charged to your bill if NBN has to activate a connection for the first time at a premises it classifies as a ‘new development’. - https://assets.kogan.com/files/docs/20180806_KI_CIS_GOLDUNLI…

  • Hmm, currently on $49.95 with Telstra 100 Mbps cable unlimited. Should I switch? Tough one.

    • That sounds like a good deal what's the upload?

I would stay with your current one.

      • It's cable, so it's 5Mbps upload.

        • Yeah if you get 100 download 5 upload for $49.95/month I would stick with that for as long as I can.

Although I have a feeling that they might try to make you upgrade to a more costlier plan soon because that seems unsustainable and would be either just breaking even or not making anything for them imho.

          • @AlienC: Well, I just joined this plan a few months ago on a 24 month contract. It was meant to be $69.95 a month but for some reason they're giving me a $20 "Bigpond Broadband Benefit" discount on top of that - no idea what that means.

            • @AussieZed: Does it say how many months you get the discount it could be a 6 or 12 month thing then back to your usual.

    • $49 for unlimited Telstra cable?!
We pay $90 for the same…

      • +1

$90 is way too much. I remember when Bigpond cable first came out in 1997, it was $65 a month and people scoffed at paying that much (most ISPs at the time were around $30-$35 a month).

        • I remember $30/month unlimited adsl2 with TPG and Dodo before.. that was probably the best deal I ever saw besides maybe a slower $25/month plan with older tech.

Honestly I would pay for $50/month for something between 25/5 and 50/20 any day.

Paying $70/month for 50/20 and it is definitely way too much even for a heavy user like me.

I am no data hoarder but I have tonnes of games installed which need updates and for that it is even overkill.

But 12/1 is too slow.. only enough for 2 youtube 1080p streams and I need enough bandwidth for 4 people at all times.. sometimes 5 during peak times.

so 50/20 is the only one that satisfies us all since it is like only $5 to $10 difference to get something around 25/5 and then you just wishing you had 50/20 haha.

Lol ISP deciding is a nightmare.

        • Yikes. Might give telstra a call and see if they’ll match it ($49)

          • @CC123: Try it worse that they can say is no.

      • Sigh I'm on $70/month for 100mbps but only 100GB. And in peak suddenly I can only get 10mbps down (i.e. 7pm), and yet other times 100mbps. Telstra Cable (not NBN HFC) is not as good as it used to be.

  • Does anyone know if Kogan uses CG-NAT? I had to opt out with Aussie BB in order to remotely access my camera and home assistant.

  • +1

I would like to know whether Kogan use gcnat as well.

I have a 280Mbit 4G connection at home (very close to tower) and being on a gcnat is hell. Dunno if I can handle the downgrade to NBN tier though.

Just called them up to suss out the 'support'. Probably the best Indian call centre I've dealt with and even better than the majority of the Aus call centres. I've had very positive experiences with their mobile phone service previously and this was the same. I know it's Vodafone so they seem to be doing something right.
Call picked up in 10 seconds. The person very knowledgeable and offered a number of options that made perfect sense and overall very helpful. Will definitely give them a go.

    • Did you ring the sign up section or the support section? In my experience the sign up call section is always much better than the support section with most other companies I have dealt with.

      • +1

Support section. If you select sign up it just tells you to go online and hangs up lol. I've had 4 identical positive experiences with kog mobile support so there's definitely a good pattern.

Any feedback from people who joined Kogan ?

    • Absolute nightmare. Churned from ABB to Kogan last thursday. Offpeak i get 80mbps, Peak i get 8mbps… My fetch TV buffers to a point its unwatchable. I'm in WA, so it may be different out east.. Problems literally happened the day i churned to Kogan. Been on it a week and very tempted to write off the month I already paid and churn back early.

  • How do Kogan compare to Tangerine?

  • Can anybody advise, if you churn from ABB to Kogan, then after a month or two, can you go back to ABB and still qualify for specials such as 6 months 50/20 at $59? or 1 month free even having been a previous customer?

    • i think you will need to wait at least 6 months

I would move back to ABB aftering going over Kogan, suck service and customer services.

      • +2

Contrary to your experience, I am loving Kogan on this Vodafone (AAPT) connection.
Great speeds as I always have had on my HFC connection.

As @lukeolivie suggested above with regards to your connections.
If you had previoulsy a good connection with whatever provider, it should be the same.
This is not always RSP dependent because your on ABB or TPG or Telstra, its your physical line and or distances in some cases depending on your topology.

Ever since I got NBN with HFC with every provider I have always gotten over 93MB-96MB
In this case, when I churned from ABB to Kogan, it only took 20 mins to churn.
Getting constant speeds of 94MB down 37Mb up.
Happy as so think I will ride out this no contract month to month connection for 9 months for the length of the special unless they keep it going or should service degrade.

      • +3

Yeah no issues with me either. Kogan customer service easily the best I've ever experienced (Note: I'm only referring to administrative requests, presales, transfer logistics and not support for technical issues as I've never needed it).

As for speeds, it's been more or less on par with ABB. On a 50Mbs plan - Off Peak around 45Mbs and peak around 30-35Mbs which is what I was getting with ABB in recent times (Originally 45Mbs peak too but that wasn't the case after a few months). Either way I have no need for anything faster so happy with Kogan for now.

  • I signed up a week ago and carn't fault it. I get a solid 90-92mbps (fttc connection) in a 40 year old house. I rang the call centre yesterday morning about 10am to inquire when my first debit would come out and the call was answered within 10 seconds. Just thought I share that from my experience with kogan nbn. it has been great!

    • currently with tpg and reluctant make the move because fear of reliability and the speed…

  • Does anyone know if you are able to sign up now and have the service activated late? I will be moving out of my current place 19/7 into a new place that is mine and would like the billing/service to start then

  • +1

Very happy with the speeds and service so far.
Customer service seems pretty nice & fast. NBN tech came out within a week
    can't complain !

  • +1

Anyone else is experiencing slow international speeds with Kogan NBN, particularly to the U.S.?

    • +1

I just cancelled my kogan FTTC NBN connection because of slow speeds even when browsing web. Had to complain to TIO as kogan kept on resetting my modem as a solution and monitoring for 2 days at a time. This happened for 40 days.

      • Terrible international speeds, but fast.com is always top-notch, so at least must be good for people how need netflix :)

    • +1

ABB usually has 35Mbps for 50/20 plan and Kogan max 32 mbps but most of othe time 25 mbps

  • +2

One thing I had to tweak on my Kogan/Vodafone NBN was MTU. To my big surprise, they suggest the default value of 1500 and the fact it is an FTTP NBN box, I had to lower it down to 1492. That solved the issues with some web sites and that pesky DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error in Chrome.

To check if you need that, see if you're getting packets fragmentation:

    C:\>ping -t 8.8.8.8 -f -l 1466
Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 1466 bytes of data:
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

You can detect your best MTU by decreasing the initial packet size of 1466 (MTU of 1500) step by step, until fragmentation stops, then add 28 to it.

Then, if needed, tweak the MTU on the router, reboot it and make sure Windows has detected the new MTU:

    netsh interface ipv4 show interface

    Idx Met MTU State Name
    --- ---------- ---------- ------------ ---------------------------
     22 35 1492 connected Wi-Fi

    • PS. It's 2019 and I'm really surprised I have to do all this, but I also had to manually set MTU on my Windows PC's LAN Ethernet interface:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Ethernet" mtu=1492 store=persistent

Never had any issues like that with AUBB, but then again it was a VDSL2 connection in bridged mode with WAN MTU of 1500 and that didn't cause any packet fragmentation.

For those who need to know, Kogan's free modem is the TP-Link Archer VR500v, or so the rep told me
