This is part of a Dell 3 day sale.

For the second time this year the flagship 30" monitor drops below $1200.

Yes that is a lot for a computer screen, but yes it is the ants pants.

I don't know any owners who are disappointed with theirs…

Be warned you'll probably want to upgrade your video card after you buy this thing…

Normally around $1600.

I suspect no further discounts are available on this but MoneyBackCo should work….

Amex users can get another $50 back if they register for the current Amex deal…

    I remember when I paid $1600 for a 24" back in '06…

    still under warranty now :P

    • +5

I recall paying $3200 for a Viewsonic P810 21" CRT monitor back in 1996. It weighed 27 kgs so it was fortunate I had a massive desk. To move it between houses when I shifted (I was a renting student back then), I needed to sit it on the front passenger seat of my car since it could not even fit in the rear door.

      • +3

Damn! 3200 for a student… you must have been loaded! what are you doing on oz bargains!

        • I was a postgraduate student - my funding body paid for it. Thank you, Australian Government.

    • +1

Hmmm, using your experience…. I can wait unti 2016 when the 30" will drop under $200

  • +7

and $679 for the 27" using code 4MZR3KTJJRT0VS down from $799

    • +15

Yeah but it wont be 2560x1600

      • Precisely - you can get a good 32" TV for $1200 - but it will be 1920x1080 at best.

      • -6

        but it will be "3d"…

wonder how long it will take to get tvs there… understandably the earthquake/tsunami…

        • +2

How long will it be before TV is broadcast at 2560x1600 in Australia?

My educated guess minimum 10 years. But the Labour government will ensure all pensioners get yet another free taxpayer funded set top box for them to watch it…

        • -1

          i don't see why i got negged… :(

i must have refused to pay the trolls their bridge toll..

      • Pity HD TV is only 1920×1080

        • -1

Well Nine doesn't even show the NRL in full HD anyway - most of the full HD stuff is the non-Australian content.

        • Leaving your point about the full resolution of the LCD for TV content where .. exactly!?

        • It isn't about using it as a TV… the point about the resolution is that if you used a 30" TV for your PC, you would have to suffer through 1920x1080 res, which at 30" on a PC isn't great. At least, that's what I think GWH is saying :P

  • +3

Maybe in a few years I could afford a PC good enough to use a monitor like this!

    • +1

most computers can use a monitor like this, it's just games that require more computing power

    • Yup, when you use a monitor like this, even with a great rig, recent games noticeably suffer performance losses in that jump from 1920x1200 to 2560x1600. But oh are the extra pixels worth it! :)

      • +2

or you could play Crisis 2 at 800x600. nothing beats chunky and blocky on a big screen for a visual vomit all over your fancy new screen.

  • Great monitor I have one.

Most of the stuff on australian tv isn't even Full HD, it's pathetic. Not to mention the crap bit rates

  • Anyone know whether you can power this monitor from a single Display Port on a Lenovo ThinkPad T410? Or does it need an extra adaptor that you need to get?

    • afaik youll be able to power it, just maybe not at the full res.

check the output capabilities of whatever graphics card you have.

    • what video card is in the thinkpad scotty? I can check for you :D

      • Switchable between Intel HD Graphics and NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M.

        • Depends if Display Port can support 2560x1600.

        • @scotty according to the nvidia official specs of your card it says it supports 2560x1600 with the display port :D

          http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvs_techspecs.html

not sure what multimode is though, but should be fine

    • Yes it will power this over the Displayport.

EDIT: My Lenovo X200s with a discrete graphics card does 2560x1600 over Displayport from the Ultrabase. However this was running Linux.

    • +3

Personally I wouldn't use the word "power"… (sounds like the electricity is coming through the display port).. "drive" perhaps is a better word?

      • Same difference bro. It's not got four wheels and axles so you don't drive it :)

I think the phrase you are looking for - would his/her laptop be able to make full use of this monitor, in regard to the resolution.

      • @scubacoles — hehe you might be right. Otherwise people would assume no 240V wall socket is needed and U3011 can get all its amps from the DisplayPort!

What does it take to drive that 30" monster?! Manual or auto? Special license required? :)

  • +3

I can't believe how small my old 24 inch Dell looks in comparison to the 30.

  • Very important question
    i have an 15 750 with a 460gtx
does this monitor scale well for 1080p games
normally scaling makes things look poor gfx and i dont want to spend $1500 on video cards
    thanks
    much love

    • lol! It doesn't scale games like consoles?

If you are talking about pc games then it will play at 2560x1600res

if console then you wil get 1080p signal = 1920x1080

you will need a good graphics card though e.g 6970 = about $350 from fluidtek

      • I bought a second hand 5870 for about $180 and it games fine.

        • I have a 5870 and it just doesn't do games like BC2 and Crysis at 60 at 25x16, usually 25 or so which isn't good enough IMO… it certainly won't do BF3 etc

Plus I don't think they're generally available 2nd hand at that price, when I was looking for a 2nd one to CF with most on ebay went for over $300 from memory.

    • And don't forget you'll be playing a 16:9 game on a 16:10 monitor, that's a personal turnoff for me.

      • +1

More like, you'll have a 16:10 monitor and games are still lagging behind at 16:9.

Vertical real estate on PC's is win.

        • most games can scale up to 16:10 resolution unless you're planning to shove a console into the monitor…

As for desktop computing, 16:10 just feels so right since your taskbar/dock sits down there taking up space.

  • I bought one last time it was on sale ($1196) - it's a beautiful monitor.

  • anyone looking to get rid of their 3008 old model?

    I'll pay $700 :D

  • no no i mean if i play games i would play them at 1080p and the monitor will
    have to 'downscale'
what i mean is when i run this monitor at 1080p is the picture a bit blurred???
as i will not be using native resolution to play games due to fps loss
on whirlpool someone mentioned playing 1080p ps3 gaming the image is 'soft'
due to upscaling so i wondering if pc gaming at 1080p is going to be poor….

  • -1

U2311H for $269 (and then phone up to negotiate $249 ;))

  • Wow, what a screen. If only I had the PC specs to match.

  • I'd be tempted by one of these but it only has 1.3 HDMI and needs 2 DVI connections to run at 2560x1600, which is annoying.

  • +2

Don't forget to use your Amex to claim your $50. I played civ 5 on max with 6950 card and it is a great monitor.

    • +1

Excellent point about the Amex if you have one - with that $50 and 7% Moneybackco you are getting the monitor for less than $1100 which is nice…

You can find these monitors on Dell outlet from time to time - I've seen them for $898 to $1400 in the outlet - but they all only have 1 year warranty.

    • How do you get $50 off by using Amex??

      • Look at the top deal link on the top right corner.

  • +1

Warning: HDMI only goes up to 1920x1600. Confirmed in the Dell document (and I have this monitor as well). DVI-DL and DisplayPort goes up to full res though. Even if you're a uni student having three almost full sized documents side-by-side is worth it assuming you can afford it!

    • Question about Dual Link DVI: To use this monitor at full res do I need to buy 1 or 2 dual link DVI cables? My graphics card (an old 8800GT) has 2 DVI outputs - can I use 2 single link DVI cables instead of a dual link cable? (Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question…)

      • +1

I believe it is 1 cable - but it has to be a dual link cable which looks pretty much the same as a normal DVI cable but inside obviously isnt…

If you use a non-dual link DVI cable I think the max res is 1920x1080.

Happy to be corrected if wrong…

      • im not sure about this. there may be a cable that merges the two DVIs on one end to a single DVI-D on the other, but maybe it depends on the GFX support of DVI-D itself.

  • +2

OMG not a bargain. i would never pay more than $100 for a monitor!

/sarcasm for all the scrooges in here.

    great deal, thanks

  • If you're into gaming better off getting 3 X 24/22" monitors for under $600 and run eyefinity =D

30" is a beast! Probably good for graphic design etc

    • +1

I don't agree - most games dont support eyefinity so you would have your game running on one monitor with your windows background on the others.

I have 2 x 27" Dells - playing say BF2 it uses only one monitor. So does Civ 5. So does nearly every other game I own.

One nice thing about 2 monitors is you can play your game on one, and have afterburner showing you how hot your GPU is on the other…

    • +1

i'm running 3x24 dell ultrasharps atm

eyefinity loses it's appeal at 24" after a while lol!

90% of the time i don't even use 3 screens anymore lol!

  • If only I could afford a 1k monitor :[

    I'll with my 2x2410's ….

  • Is this monitor good foa my notebook, the graphic cards are hd5870 crossfire. Also can I plug a 13 inch mbp?

  • There's another deal on dell site:
DELL ST2320L 23"W HD Monitor with WLED for $158.98 with free delivery
    http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=t14st2…

  • I grabbed one of these last time they had the deal too (maybe 2 months ago). Possibly the best item i have ever bought. Absolutely love it!
Only bad thing about it is now i really dislike working on smaller monitors (have 22"s at work/uni). I hardly ever work at uni anymore, i'd much prefer going home and doing work there
Makes it a little hard if i need a hand with something.

  • I ordered one of these yesterday (Wednesday) and Dell just delivered it today - how's that for fast!

    • lol I ordered 2 today ^_^

      • With that sort of money, any chance I could have some? :P

        • that was my life saving :D

          lol! :P

        • probably not what most people would spend their life savings on lol

  • Can someone tell me if this comes with a DP cable? if so how long? thanks

    • +1

Yes it does. I don't have it with me, but it's about 1m long I would guess.
