Game of Thrones S08E04 *SPOILERS*

So with another episode comes another thread, and for me personally a bigger disappointment compared to episode 3.

Episode 3 I actually enjoyed, just after the episode made me think it could’ve been done a little better.

This episode; i was just thinking wtf a lot of the time.

Mainly:

Too much useless dialogue (again)

Dragons flying around to the enemy, couldn’t spot a army of ships pointing massive spear guns in the air ?
Maybe do some reconnaissance ?

If I was Cersei who’s meant to be all ruthless. Just command her archers to shoot down the unsullied and dragon queen then and there?

Capturing Mesande (sp?) Why? how? who cares? Another minor character getting screen time to avoid killing any main characters

Can’t think of anything else right now, still pretty early.

2 more episodes to go;

NB: this is just opinion and not fact. No need to rage or get upset with people’s opinions.
The show will still have the highest ratings, so no need to get upset with each other. :)

  • Capturing Mesande (

I mean How the (profanity) did she get captured???

Dragons flying around to the enemy, couldn’t spot a army of ships pointing massive spear guns in the air ?
    Maybe do some reconnaissance ?

That bothered the crap out of me as well

I don't think danny will become queen maybe john becomes king (unwillingly)

I hope arya and the hound get what they are going out to finish

    • Wouldn't be surprised if Arya kills Cersei

    • Mesande

It's Missandei. This will obviously be the mis-spelling for episode 4 - in your post about episode 3, everyone was misspelling Arya as Aria :-(

      • I was going to write "Me Sundae" like the meme spreading around the net

    • Grey Worm specifically told her to go to the skiff so I think the assumption is that she managed to get off the ship, but was then intercepted by the op pirate man whilst rowing

  • +1

@Danstar, you should stop watching the show right now, you seem to hate it!

    • +4

Don't hate, just expected more from a show that has been brilliant from season 1, but slowly drifted away from it's shock and awe.

It really does show that GRRM's writing is impeccable and "Hollywood" writers can't match.

Ps. I'm still going to watch it and think it's one of the greatest shows in my time.

      Star Gate SG-1 is still my #1 :D :P :D

      • +1

It's obviously because they ran out of book, they're making most of it up themselves and aren't as good as George R. R. Martin.

You just have to adjust your expectations accordingly, we all knew this would happen. All the nuance is gone.

      • +1

For anyone who has read the books, it is obvious that GRRMs writing is far from impeccable. The first 3 books were good but the next lot were utter garbage. Compared to the other great fantasy writers of his time, GRRM is very mediocre with a very poor work ethic. Just compare him to writers like Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks or Patrick Rothfuss and you will see how he sizes up. I think the show has far eclipsed the books in almost every department (with the exception of the warg stuff).

The main issue I think people are having with the last 2 seasons of the show is that it is very rushed. They have realised that they can't keep doing this show for another 5 seasons so need to finish up and things are being accelerated at a pace that does not match the rest of the series.

    • +2

You can be a fan of the show and critique it.

I feel almost exactly the same. Naturally there is some suspension of disbelief but if bad/stupid choices are being made consistently it should be brought up, if only to provide discussion.

  • yeah ever since they gone off the books its just been a rush to end it. if George RRs books were involved the first 4 eps would have been a whole season or more. im noticing that alot to. HBO are coming out with 5 new spin off game of thrones shows and i think they just want them out. but with the crappy time frame of 6 episodes to end everything. they are doing a pretty good job tho. ive noticed about 100 wtf moments this season that they would have NEVER done that way in the first 6 seasons. but no more books.. they write how they want.

  • Yeah I agree with the OP. I guess this is what happens when the original author hasn't finished writing the ending yet? And why was Mesande the only person captured? One would assume she scooped up by the iron fleet swimming to safety so why not scoop up other survivors too? Did Cersei actually know that Mesande was important to Dany anyway? And how did all those soldiers and Tyrian make it to shore swimming in full armour? And why didn't Dany circle around behind the fleet after the first dragon was killed to attack them from behind?

And don't even get me started on the Briene/Jamie hookup, that was just lame and awkward and unnecessary in so many ways.

And anyone else notice Dany's take away coffee cup on the table at Winterfell?

    • And anyone else notice Dany's take away coffee cup on the table at Winterfell?

It was literally on the second page of The Mercury today.
People who actually care would have seen about it thirty times on the internet already.

I didn't notice it at the time.

  • +1

Yes dragon dies again like a rushed storyline….such a peasant episode

  • +4

I think it's losing it's magic quickly with all the stupid decisions the characters are making.

How can a dragon not fly REALLY high into the sky (we've seen they can from The Long Night") and go over the battlements, then swoop down from behind.

As others mentioned; why didn't Dany do any reconnaissance? Fly higher and see if there is a danger ahead. After they killed Rheagal, why didn't Dany fly around Dragonstone and hit them from behind? Their spears would damage the ships masts if they had to swing around.

I feel like the creators are simply doing what the audience want to see (i.e - all the reunions between characters) rather than what GRRM will do in the books.

I'm still excited to see what happens but I'm slowly being let down.

  • Can’t think of anything else right now, still pretty early

Did the lack of a twist impact how you feel, e.g. would Tyrion seducing Brienne instead have gotten the episode a higher rating from you?

    • +7

It's not the lack of twist, it's the abundance of poor choices being made by main characters and as many people have said the 'plot armor' all the main characters have in this season

Like I've said many times, it's just an opinion and some discussion about the most popular show on Earth right now.

It's popular for a reason, overall it's awesome.

      • +1

The IMDB reviews weren't too great for Ep 4. Which I kind of agree with.

They're leaving a LOT to happen in the last two episodes and it might feel rushed.

How can a show which has had so much happen over 10 years, end the two major plots (Night King and Iron Throne) in 3 episodes.

      • Poor choices are acceptable given proper context. Unfortunately, that's not what's happening with the weaksauce narrative coming from D&D. They haven't had GRRM to help produce/direct, nor go off his written works since Season 4. You can tell that from Season 5.5 - 8.0 its a very imperfect narrative.

With that said, I feel like the show is building up to perhaps kill all the dragons from the universe, kill Dany, perhaps even kill Jon…. all at the expense of taking the Iron Throne, with possibly Sansa wedding Tyrion and becoming the Queen of the Realms. Not that I care for GoT predictions, but I do care about a series that's too predictable (Seasons 1-4 were very unpredictable, if you hadn't read the books).

      • +2

Exactly. People think that the complaints are from those who are m mad their predictions were wrong, or that we just want blind twists and turns at every corner. It's not the case. We want a compelling, plausible story which incorporates twists that make sense to the characters and relationships. Not just have them make dumb decisions for the sake of drama or spectacle.

  • Who reported this as a duplicate ? Think they're confusing my last post maybe ?

  • Season 7 and 8 have been rushed really badly. They should have just fleshed them out and made them ten episode seasons.
This is the writing brilliance brought to you by the writer of Xmen Wolverine.

  • whos keen for a starbucks coffee?

    • I reckon that was done on purpose

  • +1

All the hype/memes/criticism is intentional for this season. Just enjoy it for the fantasy it is.

Or watch the episode on Monday, read every post about it on reddit on Tuesday, then rewatch the episode on Wednesday. That'll give you a good snapshot of how guided information is used to confuse you into changing your opinion.

    Whose ready for the election?

    • I had these opinions during and after watching it on Monday night.

  • +5

The Bron/Tyrion/Jaime scene was garbage too.

He teleports to Winterfell from Kings Landing, lugs around a giant crossbow, manages to sneak into the castle, know exactly where Tyrion and Jaime are, and then sneaks out without being noticed?

I must've missed the scene where Bron found the space stone.

    • Yeah, I forgot that scene.

    • +1

And surely these automatic reloading crossbows would have been much better value against the swarming white walkers.

  • +3

As a fan of GoT and also military strategy I'm annoyed by the poor decisions made by key characters who are supposed to be military specialists.

In this episode where were Varys's little birds? Surely the building and installation of massive Scorpions / ballistas / oxybeles (call them big crossbows even) would not have gone unnoticed. So did Varys know and not tell Daenerys or did his intel fail him? Time may tell. Regardless, such a big secret could not be kept and it wouldn't take Varys's little bird network to uncover that key battlefield intel, Varys can't be the only source.

Rhaegal the dragon shot out of the sky. Wow, just wow. Spectacular, but. Euron really had his eye in with that scorpion. To hit a fast moving flying object at distant range with a projectile like that is one hell of shot. He must have got in a lot of practice shooting at fast moving flying objects, pigeons and crows maybe? Daenerys flying low into enemy territory like that, another very bad decision, did she not learn from the death of her first dragon?. And the time to reprime the weapon for another shot? That's a lot of energy for a team of men to muster in what seemed like less than a minute.

Stupid ultimatum scene. If you are going to show up at the gates of a city and present an ultimatum, you'll either have a massive show of force for effect or you'll send an expendable diplomat. Neither of those things happened. Instead the queen should have been routed there and then by a cavalry charge from the city and that's presuming she had the sense to be beyond the range of the Scorpions and archers, which she may not have been. Regardless Cersei should have refused the ultimatum and finished her there and then. Poor decisions by both sides. Allowed for the dramatic effect of the beheading or the trusted aid, for the same reason Tyrion should have died there too.

Daenerys and her personal guard should have been on horseback, or her on her dragon, ready to flee if Cersei had behaved as she should have and went after her. Duh!

Anyone else shouting 'Why? Why would you do that?' at their TV?

    • +1

In this episode where were Varys's little birds?

With Qyburn in Episode 3 of Season 6 ;)

      • +1

        Little murderous birds :)

    • +1

      military strategy

Also I'm disappointed the unsullied don't fight in phalanx formation (especially against the white walkers than ran at them last episode), and their spears are too short.

  • +2
    • They could identify and capture a very specific person from what it seemed like chaos and ship wreck(s) everywhere!
    • Danny couldn't see the whole fleet of ships….that's some epic sneak level.
    • I have played enough Battlefield to know, you can't hit the damn planes when they are at 90 degrees to the AA gun mounts.
    • They showed last season that enemy has a scorpion/ballista….wouldn't you build something to counter it? Armor? Hell few seasons back, sons of Harpy could throw spears and hurt Drogon…. armor for dragons isn't a foreign concept either in that era.
    • Show up with '20 good men' to threaten a castle…. sigh….
    • All the scorpions were aiming at Drogon. Shoot him, fire gazillion arrows, then send ground troops charge to wipe them off….there, war for throne over.
    • If I know I am gonna die anyways, wouldn't I try and do something to cause maximum harm while I go down? Grab Cercei, jump from wall….start singing Free Falling.
    • No scouting for Danny's troops.
    • Teleporting fleets of Mr Greyjoy.
    • Ms Greyjoy is nowhere to be seen….safeguarding some castle for Danny to fall back it seems.

I love the show..but this shit is getting ridiculous…

    • They could identify and capture a very specific person from what it seemed like chaos and ship wreck(s) everywhere!

Worse is former slaves that can swim long distances to shore.

Danny couldn't see the whole fleet of ships….that's some epic sneak level.

      The came around a fjord.

      Armor

You'd have to wear tank armour (and equivalent for dragon) for a cross bow arrow not to piece it and then it becomes impractical (can't fly).

      war for throne over

Nope, Jon is not with the mob and he controls the North and allies. Jon would wait to rebuild his army.

      Grab Cercei, jump from wall

Hard when your hands are cuffed. Maybe headbutt her and use your body to push her off.

    • ….start singing Free Falling

      lol'd :D

  • +1

HBO have shat the bed on this one. Over produced tripe now, watches like a constantly bad dream sequence, but it’s meant to be real. GRRM made his world ruthless and believable. This is pandering to obsessed fans of character X,Y & Z and Meme generators. The spinoffs won’t last a season.

  • Wheres the Ep5 thread, Ser
