@otter-raptor: You don't use tripod, you never do. Night Sight take multiple shots in those 6 seconds and that is only that long because it's completely pitch black. The camera in fact does not open its shutter for longer than 1/2 seconds for every shots and there's very few situation where it needs that long. That's the biggest misconceptions about Google NightSight. In fact, people tested and Tripod does not work with NightSight as the phone doesn't open its shutter long enough to require it, image is exactly same with and without tripod. It's both a pro and con, pro is its totally differ from normal pro mode to increase exposure, much easier and practical to use. Con is it's completely limited by the auto mode, you can't improve on it like with pro mode.

And pro mode on Samsung is WHEN you need a tripod. Go on, try and hold it by hands to produce better image than Google NightSight. It definitely can with tripod, but those shaky hands of yours can't.

                • @Bigboomboom: Oh gotcha, need to check the Google camera again then

                  • @otter-raptor: Yea I know. I think one of the review site do a comparison between Pixel 3 and P20 Pro night mode. The P20 Pro has slightly better image at night when taking with hands (on auto + night mode), but when both are taken with tripod there is significance improvement on the Huawei side. Pixel 3 on the other hand, no change (unless your hands get really shaky). That's the biggest con of Google NightSight, as it would have been really good if they actually do make the shutter open longer when they can detect the stability of tripod. The increase exposure would have clean up the final image more even at the expense of blur on moving objects.

          • @otter-raptor: How is the pixel camera better when it only has 12MP and Samsung has 16MP?

            • +4

@Homr: MP on sensor does not mean much. Seen those 48MP sensors on Xiaomi and other Chinese smartphone? Both the Sony and Samsung's sensors do not make wonders. Their lack of image processing and their small sensor size negate whatever MP count they try to impress with. The biggest smartphone camera sensor by size is Huawei 40MP one. Not the MP count, physical size. That's what matters.

              • @Bigboomboom: oh wow, that's pretty misleading because most phone brands market their phone by stating how many MPs it has so it's pretty easy to assume that MP = quality.

            • +2

@Homr: Megapixel is just the size of the picture it produces mate, doesn't reflect quality of the outcome

              • @otter-raptor: Which brings back the question though, why no one come up with a camera sensor as big as Huawei? I think it's at least 33% bigger than the next biggest competitor, which is what matter most apart from lens. Those Zeiss Lens are wasted on Nokia mostly.

The only reason Huawei stands at the top is their sensor. Their image processing still lacks behind Google. Also sensor is why smartphone can never reach DSLR level, no matter how many sensors you throw at it.

                • @Bigboomboom: I agree mate, maybe those LIGHT guys who are specialising in extrapolation using multiple sensors can provide a breakthrough, but at this point phones can't best a simple SLR

                  • @otter-raptor: Well the Moto Mod where you use your Moto as DSLR's screen probably can, cause it's the DSLR doing the shooting. /s

@otter-raptor: Nokia 9 Using Light technology, and is great photo.. (if u know how to use the camera properly)

  • Does anyone know how you receive the e giftcard?

    • It's an e-gift card? So email?

      • Haven't gotten one yet,it's been 30 minutes so a bit worried.

  • So….NFC, Headphone Jack (Finally!) and Band 28. On top of that, OLED screen, Camera with OIS (pretty rare for a midrange device to have one, most of the Xiaomi phones don't) and Fast charge USB-C. On top of that, no notch!!

If you guys wanna say something to Google, buy this phone and show that these are the stuff Google has to make, not something like the Pixel 2. And yeah, this phone is worth it. Only downside is battery (only 3000mAh, compared to my Poco F1 that is really low) and storage (64GB is about to become obsolete and like usually in a base model and people do like having a 128 GB version too), but those downsides are really really small concerns compared to how much features this phone brings.

If anything, maybe Google can do better and maybe they are listening to us. Wish i waited a little while but then again, we'll see how the software side goes with this and wait a little until everything becomes stable.

Poor scratch resistant screen, no wireless charging, reduced water resistance, slower photo performance, less storage, no free original quality uploads of photos and 4k video, I would rather buy s10e and make Google make phones like that at prices like that.

For those looking for good rear camera, XDA's review of Pixel 3a claims that "In all, the rear camera on the Pixel 3a performs surprisingly well and on par with the Pixel 3 almost every time".

  • Does this have dual sim capability?

    • esim -+ normal sim

      subject to market

  • +2

No unlimited google photos (original quality) is a big let down but otherwise a great phone.

  • Local stock in case anyone is interested at JB, may be able to try and bargain for a better price than their website listing. I get that the OPs post shows price which is about $50 cheaper and comes with a gift card.

I prefer local stock in case of issues…
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/go…

    • Good luck getting them to budge on their advertised price on such a new release.
Thinking you might get $10 off max.

      • I got priced it for $630 today

        • So $19 off or about 2.9%
Granted you might get extra off this depending on what % off gift cards you get but it's not going to be near the price of effectively $459.

  • Can you use the gift card on the phone?

  • For those looking at local options and have access to JB Commercial.
    $615.95 for Pixel 3a.
    $758.31 for Pixel 3a XL.

    • JB Commercial must have dropped prices:
      590.59 for Pixel 3a
      727.09 for Pixel 3a XL

I asked in a store yesterday if they would sell for this price to avoid posting but they said it must be ordered through commercial page…

  • So, is it worth upgrading to this from my S7?

    • Definite 'upgrade'

  • I don't see much reason to switch from a Mi A2 for about half that price. Band 28 - never missed it yet. NFC: yes, would be nice, but not going back to single SIM ever. Plastic body vs aluminium. Can't justify the price.

  • sheesh, the B&H one is not physical dual sim?

    • No Pixel has physical dual SIM.

      • -2

I'd buy it if it was dual SIM. Google needs to get on with the times! Who uses single SIM anymore?

  • Last time I looked, B&H were not charging Aussie GST. Is this still the case?

  • Will the gift card be linked to your account? Whats the ETA?

  • How does the 3a xl compare against the 2 xl?

  • What's the likely date of shipment for this phone. ?

    • Already Shipped by DHL. Should be here by Monday.

  • Black/white already shipping,purple isnt in stock yet :(

  • This or Xiaomi mi 9?

  • +1

Has anyone received the gift card yet?

  • Hopefully the 4 will be good

  • +1

Has anyone received the phone, just wondering how long the shipping takes.

What pissed me off the most is Google is as greedy as Apple or even worse when it comes to exchange rate comparing USD pricing to AUD pricing.
Take DJI for example, they announced Osmo Action at $349 USD yesterday, JB sells it at $499AUD. Google is trying to sell $479USD 3a XL for $799 AUD locally. The $80USD difference between 3a and 3a XL becomes $150 AUD difference here. Google doesn't have problem with tech, they have a problem with greed.
