  • says $1200 off on jb site? is there something im missing?

    • +9

      Deal starts tomorrow.

    • +5

Be careful, the previous $800 cancellation fee may not apply to the present deals.

look at the link below and paragraph 6.3 as stated in the conditions

      https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

6.2 Voucher Repayment Fee 6.2 If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher Repayment Fee).

6.3 The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in: (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received; (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received.

      • +1

Yes I saw that too but then others point to the “critical information summary” https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

And it clearly states Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee for the Premium $99 plan is. $800.

        So I’m totally lost tbh!

      • +8

I can confirm $800 cancellation fee still applies.
Got an iPhone 16 256 GB for $0 over the weekend. The rep mistakenly said $1600 off instead of $1400, but honoured what he said, so I got $200 extra savings.

  • Can you get JB Hi-Fi to price match iPhone pro or pro max from centrecom

    • +1

As long as its AU stock, they should match it.

      • Hit and miss, previous deal I was told no price match but others had success

      • +1

Should match amazon at $1348 for the 16 128GB… what happens with the extra $49 beyond the $1400 off credit though - an extra voucher?

        • +1

Yes. You can get the GC for that.

  • Maybe it’s just me, the wording on this post isn’t great.

$1400 off range. But then the iPhone 16 is only $866 off?

    • +29

You receive the $1400 off the phone when signing up for a $99 p/m 24M SIM plan. So you can sign up in-store, receive the phone and then contact JB Hi-Fi Mobile (run by Telstra) to cancel the plan, which comes at the cost of the early termination fee of $800, so you're really getting $600 off the cost of the phone, if that makes sense.

      • Legend thank you, makes a lot more sense. Is the 800 applicable for every model?

        • +7

Yes indeed. I forgot to mention you also need to pay the first month of the plan, which would be $99. If you terminate the plan on the same day, myself and others have gotten lucky with JB Hi-Fi Mobile waiving the first month cost, for an even $800.

          • @bambadee: Can we do this twice on same account? I got iphone 16 pro in April. Will they notice, i had cancelled a similar plan earlier.

          • @bambadee: Is the cancellation fee payable immediately or is it billed like a phone bill?

            • +2

@blackdiamond: Can’t confidently say. I had a preexisting service with Telstra/JB Hi-Fi mobile so it was charged as part of my usual billing cycle the following month.

            • @blackdiamond: Telstra chat offered me two options - Pay immediately or set up a payment plan to pay over time. So, talk or chat with them to find the option suitable to you.

    • $866 is the final price

      • +2

866 after cancellation. Makes more sense.

        • Wouldn’t you still need to pay the first month of $99?
          So is it $99 + $866?

          • @YeboMate: Apparently, see replies above.

          • @YeboMate: No, it is $99 (Paid upfront at the time of purchase) + $766.5 (Invoiced after cancellation) = $865.5

      • Can I ask how often these deals come up please? I want to purchase but not immediately. Thanks

A lot of OZBers believe TRS is not legal (since you can't claim TRS if you bring the phone back) so I removed the info this time. However, if you are really buying one as a gift for a friend or relative overseas, for A (most people), here is the info / comparison.

Personally I think it's pointless talking TRS because it can be claimed for almost anything anyway, don't need to see it spelled out on every deal. Either you are travelling and can claim it or you can't, zero impact on the value of the deal itself relative to others.

        • Hi all I am going to purchase this tomorrow for my mother. Can she claim TRS if it's out of the case and being used or will it need to stay in the packaging?

          Cheers

          • +3

@warwagon86: Out of the suitcase. Phone can be opened or unopened. Full tax receipt with your full correct name as per your passport. Prefill TRS form

        • +4

It is legal. You can bring the goods back as long as the value of the duty free goods is less than $900 for an adult or $450 for a child, which can be pooled across a family.

          From the TRS website:

If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared, and if the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas/duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, any applicable GST and/or duty may need to be paid unless another concession (example, all personal clothing – except furs) is available.

          • @Gonltruck: This has been asked WAAAYYY too many times.

You can bring back the duty free goods you claimed on your departing leg GST free on your returning leg if the value is less than $900 per adult and $450 per child and their allowances can be pooled.

So a family of 4 with 2 minors mean $2,700 ($900 x 2 + $450 x 2). A phone worth less than that can be brought back GST free. You still have to declare it in your arrival card but they will wave you out immediately upon noticing the travelling family.

            Done this all the time

            • @burningrage: You have responded to me saying the exact same thing I said?

            • @burningrage: Last time I picked up this exact same iPhone deal, I claimed TRS on the way out. And then on the way in I told them I had returned with the phone and they didn't care at all… So legality and actual implemented law seem to be two separate things here. I told them transparently about the situation

        • Just confirming with the receipts that you must present to the TRS counter:

          • is it just the JB Hi-Fi receipt showing the price of the phone by itself? eg. iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB at $2847 - $1400 = $1447
            OR
          • do you also have to show the receipts for the contract termination fee paid to Telstra that bring the total to $2317.59 as well?

I have a TRS total duty free value allowance pool of $1800 (2 people x $900).

        • Got my iPhone Pro Max (ended up with the 512GB version in my second preference colour) and I think I worked out what price to declare while I was filling out the TRS form. It was the total value of the purchase which was $2345 (price matched with Retravision). That included the $1400 gift voucher, not just the $945 of my own money that I paid.

I couldn't wrap my head around the $1400 which I seemed to have gotten for free but it I guess it was in exchange for signing up to a contract. So with all that I exceed my $1800 duty free limit but from what others have been saying here there is a chance that I may not have to pay back the $213.18 in GST that I get refunded on the way out of the country. Thanks OP and everyone for all the info!

    • +10

If you pay using Telstra (instead of the JB-Mobile app), you get 766 Telstra Plus Points redeemable for a $10 gift card for Amazon, etc.

    • +4

Just worth noting that you can't use discounted gift cards to pay the early termination fee

    • Question, what do you need the Aldi SIM card for? If you get a new number when signing up, can’t you just terminate the new number without needing an ALDI sim?

      • +6

you need to port-in for which you need an existing no.

    • Sorry, can you please elaborate about the price matching also can we use discounted gift card on top of this deal?

      • Try to find the best price / deal of the iPhone you are interested in and have JB Hi Fi price match.

Discounted gift cards, if you are after a phone that costs more than $1400, you could use gift cards to pay the amount above $1400. Not sure whether there is any good deal on JB gift cards. You can have a look at OZB Discounted eGift Cards wiki and search for "JB Hi-Fi".

    • So you sign up to this, and then one month later you sign up to Optus or whomever (transfer number) and you will just automatically get charged the Telstra termination fee? And then continue on with Optus or whomever? I am assuming then no need to call anyone.

      • +3

If I’m understanding the process right, I think the trick to only paying the termination fee is if you “cancel the service” not port out. I think porting out will leave you liable for the full amount or pro rated amount. That’s why people first get a dummy Aldi number for instance, port that to the jb Hi-Fi plan, then once activated and working immediately cancel the Jb hifi/telstra service which has the Aldi number, that is canceling will also cancel number as well, leaving the person to then continue to use their actual number which is still active and with the same old provider. At that point your phone is unlocked to take to to any provider if choice. This is how I understand it.

        • Oh thanks for that. I would have just signed up with my regular number otherwise. Cheers!

    • Legend, will use this for iPhone 17

    • Trying to figure out - why is it cheaper if you're already on Telstra? That's not porting-in right???

      • Having done it, now I understand.

As I already had another number (well, the number I wanted to retain). The pro-rata saving is not applied so you lose ~$30 compared to coming in fresh to JB hifi. This is because JB/Telstra will align the billing cycle to your existing account, waiving the need to pay $99 monthly fee at commencement.

    • This table is brilliant and i'm relying on it being correct.

      has anyone does this recently?
I just read the info from link (see below) and it doesn't say anything about the $800 penalty fee, but rather says "you’ll need to pay out any remaining Voucher Repayment Fee". Is this a recent change? as i dont want to get caught out :(

eg: i'm specifically looking at the iphone 16plus 256gb for mum.
(this is the phone she wants - i'm just wanting to find out the cheapest way to make it happen!)

she has a plan she likes which is only $29/month for reference. so was planning to cancel the plan after buying it, hoping to then get the phone cheaper (as per the table)

      https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

  • -1

How long the offer will be?

    • +1

depends on how far you are located from JB, usually it should be around 3km - 5km long.

  • +1

So if I buy a iPhone, does the tax invoice say the RRP of the iPhone or the discounted price? (Will be buying it as a gift for TRS)

    • RRP or price matched price on the JB invoice.
First monthly fee and early termination fee are separate transactions / invoices (JB Mobile / Telstra).

    • I got the pixel a while back says the total cost of the phone (ie rrp or whatever you negotiate down to)

      2 minutes too slow…

    • Receipt is for full price.

      • Sorry, do you mean the receipt shows the full phone price (or negotiated price) without showing the $1400 off?

        • +2

The receipt shows the full (or negotiated) price and all the payment(s) for the phone with the first payment being the $1400 JB voucher / gift card.
The store staff will literally grab a JB gift card, put $1400 in there and use that to pay for the phone first. Then, use your other gift card(s) or credit card for the remaining amount (if applicable).

  • -5

Any iPhone 16 Plus deals? Thanks

Look above what netsurfer posted in the table

  • Do we have to purchase an IPhone on the day or can we get a $1400 Giftcard? I’m not looking to upgrade just yet but do want to change over to Telstra.

    • On JB Hifi website, it says you $1200 off in JB Hifi Vouchers. Where does it says $1400 giftcards? Thanks

      • +1

Read above comments - $1400 off offer starts tomorrow.

        • Thank you. My bad.

  • Sorry can someone confirm does this only work for port in sonneed to have an existing sim or number hence the 5$ Aldi sim?

Also any hits to credit rating if you cancel the phone plan in the first month etc? Thx

  • How would it work for me if I currently have a 12 month sim plan with Lebara?

    • +8

Get an Aldi prepaid SIM and register for a new mobile number. Since you need to terminate the contract early, you don't want to use your main mobile number that is important to you (as you will lose that number once Telstra terminates it).

That's why in the tables above, there is $5 Aldi SIM factored into the total cost calculation.

      • Thank you so much! I've never attempted to do this before so your reply is really helpful. Okay so basically I do what you suggested and once the plan is terminated, I can put in my own sim card, whether it be Lebara or another provider.

        • +2

Once you have the phone, you can already put in the SIM you really want to use (unless you want to use up that 1 month worth of Telstra mobile data on your new iPhone 16).

You could technically port the number out to terminate the contract, but most people don't want to gamble with their main mobile phone number.

  • +1

Can i use jbhifi gift card to pay Pro rata termination fee and first month fee?

I basically want to trade in my 15pro and use that gift card towards this cost.

    • No, you can't. Those are technically charged by Telstra Mobile (JB Hi-Fi Mobile).

  • +3

Does this affect credit score at all? Just applying for home loan real soon

    • yes it does

    • -5

Lol, no. They will do a credit check for a phone plan but thats nothing. As long as you disconnect legally, nothing is off on your record

    • As far as I aware this is a soft check which doesn't effect credit score (like when you change electricity provider vs a hard check like a credit card application which does impact credit score: https://www.equifax.com.au/personal/will-checking-credit-rep….

    • What effect does this have on a potential near future home loan?

      • +6

They should reward you for being a true Oz bargainer. Trying to save every penny possible

      • Zero effect

  • Would I be able to port in from a boost prepaid sim?

    • +1

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. The reason is the porting from Boost to Telstra is different to other Telstra wholesale provider to Telstra. Telstra tends to do the porting at the end of business hours (so could take hours). Until the porting is complete, you won't be able to get the phone. Aldi $5 prepaid is recommended because it is normally the fastest to port.

      • +5

T&Cs actually say Boost is an excluded port-in service unfortunately….

    • +1

Technically boost to JB is a modify order

  • Is 16e excluded?

  • Just got the deal today with the $1200. Is there anyway to get the additional $200 or is it tough luck?

    • +2

Go back to the JB store and ask to match the deal (within 14 days, JB stores generally would refund the difference).

    • I got mine last week too. Interested to know whether we can have the difference refunded
