    • Yes, credit check is performed at the very beginning (as part of setting up the 24 months plan). You must pass the credit check to get this deal.

    • 100%, there is a credit check on these things :(

  • Would i be able to pay for the termination fees with jb gift cards?

    • +2

No, Telstra / JB Mobile won't accept JB gift card payments.

  • +1

“$1200 off the current ticketed price of the iPhone 16 referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher”

“If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term“

    “Voucher Repayment Fee
If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher Repayment Fee).
The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:
    (a)
Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received”

How are people getting out of paying back the full voucher fee?

    • +1

Because the maximum early termination fee amount is $799.95.

      • +1

But it says the whole voucher needs to be paid back?

        • +1

Refer to JB Hi-Fi Mobile Upfront Plans

Under Premium Plan, Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee: $800.

        • +1

If you are still scared or cynical about it, chat to JB Hi Fi staff or contact JB Mobile Support or Telstra Mobile Support and ask about early termination.

          • -1

@netsurfer: Good idea. It’s a great deal, but it hinges on early termination for $800.

  • Am I able to use this deal again if I’ve done it in the past, approx. 2 months ago?
Would probably use a different email in store when they ask if that means anything

    • If you can pass the Telstra credit check again, then you can get this deal again. Unless you change your name (or you recently moved and haven't updated your driver license or ID with the address), then Telstra CRM will still find you even if you change your email address to [email protected].

      • My passport and home address are still the same. I don't have a driving license. Do you mean, just change home address (not only email) could pass the Telstra credit check again and again? My name is still the same. Home address can be changed in bank statement, very easy. Any other tips? NSW photo ID? Medicare card? Different Telstra ID, right?

        • No, don't do dodgy stuff. If the credit check cannot find you, you will most likely fail the test. There were OZBers with clean credit record but didn't pass the credit check (guessing maybe insufficient credit history of long term / regular payments). JB Hi Fi sales staff don't have the ability to know why a credit check failed. Most Telstra customer service reps don't tell you (probably because they don't know why either).

If you unfortunately fail the credit check, it's best to ask an older family member to buy it.

          • @netsurfer: Previously I informed my Telstra ID with history of Boost Mobile (prepaid) in the past. I wonder if I buy another Boost Mobile new number with new Telstra ID could help to pass the credit check?

            • @neoleo: Doubtful. Prepaid doesn't mean much. The credit check is designed to see if you can make the $99/month payment (even though most OZBers would terminate it right away, Telstra obviously want to ensure customers can pay $99/month for 24 months).

Why are you assuming you will fail the credit check? Try it first and if needed, get an older family member to do it.

              • @netsurfer: I passed this during previous Samsung S25 preorder. Then I failed during Samsung 25 Edge preorder with the same Telstra ID.

I think I'll try with a new Telstra ID and maybe a new Boost mobile number, before trying again during Pixel 10 Pro preorder later …

My friend really want an iPhone 17 Pro Max later … He never try this trick. So, it will be his first attempt. I think having a Telstra ID with Boost Mobile history may help to convince the staff to help. I think different staff, different treatment based on my previous experience doing this.

                • @neoleo: No, the staff have no control over any factors to help you pass the credit check. Having a Boost Mobile history isn't taken into account when doing a credit check and staff cannot override that to manually say 'oh you have a Boost Mobile, so we'll make your credit check pass'

  • If I cancel the plan at the same day, and refund the iphone16, does that mean I payed $866 and get $1400 jbhifi giftcard?

    • No

      • why

        • because they are the rules

        • No, are you assuming JB wouldn't know you're buying your iphone through telco deal? It might be the case, but its unlikely only if the store manager not doing their diligent. But most likely, you will be told you can't refund the phone OR if you keep insisting to refund they'll only give you GC for the amount of $1.1k based on the default bonus GC for $99 plan

    • Assuming the phone remains sealed, and the store manager approves the refund, then probably yes.

  • +1

Do you need to be working to be eligible, with active payslips? Thanks.

    • +1

No - they are more eager to sell you than you are eager to buy - just say i am working, making 80k cash in hand bla bla … they check the credit thingy, if it comes okay - all is okay.

i got iPhone 14 Pro Max on the release day with similar deal, 1200 aud giftcard, that was 2022. My friend got 16 Pro in similar deal last year around the release day too, JB didn't have the stock on release day.

  • Ok so when I was in store I was chatting to one of the staff and he was telling me about the whole porting out for 30 days thing.

He mentioned he switched out to a MVNO which used Telstra 5G. I was surprised as I said I thought it has to be to Optus or Voda.

He said nah so long as it’s not direct Telstra ie boost then it works too.

Just can’t remember which MVNO he mentioned 😭

    • +1

Woolworths mobile uses Telstra 4G and 5G.

Aldi Mobile $29 and $55 plan use Telstra 5G. Aldi Mobile is Telstra MVNO.

Tangerine mobile 32 GB plan and above use Telstra 4G & 5G too.

More mobile $32 plan and above use Telstra 5G.

Superloop mobile $35 plan and above use Telstra 5G.

Exetel $40 esim mobile plan uses Telstra 5G.

      • Ahh so porting out to any of those and back in would make me a new Telstra customer?

        • Any MVNO except Boost mobile and Belong, I think. Belong is also owned by Telstra.

  • -1

Pardon my ignorance but the link in OP shows minimum plan cost of $2376 over 24 months. If we cancel the plan in the first month, what’s stopping them reinforcing this?

    • The 'over 24 months' part. You are not holding the plan for that amount of time, therefore you won't pay that amount.

      • -5

        what’s stopping them reinforcing this

Their own T&Cs. Do you want me make you read it?

        • Thanks mate, it was a simple question and I am trying to find those T&C but I understand that you are quite upset so early in the morning. I will keep digging - thanks for your valuable input.

Edit: Found these Terms which outlines $800 as a voucher repayment which make sense. But there is another terms here which says:

The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:

          (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;

These terms make the cost of cancellation $1341.

Anyway! I must be reading bit deeper than what I am suppose to I guess.

    • *enforcing it, not reinforcing it.
What they are stating is the total minimum cost if you stayed for 24 months.
There is an early termination clause (I know it is silly, but it is an out for customers who may face adverse financial conditions over the contract period.
Please go through the information provided.
Disclaimer: I have not done it personally.

Retravision has iPhone plus 16 for just over 1500.

Amaysim has the plus for $1400 but not sure if JB hifi would price match with that. Can always ask.

    • Amaysim requires to buy sim

    • I successfully price matched, 1349 for 256g ip16

      • Don't you mean $1495? Retravision has iPhone 16 256gb there for that price

  • -3

What's the method here to get this deal

  • Do they price match then take off $1400? I’m use to getting vouchers and not the off and terms state listed ticket price so I wonder as I can price match to $1941 (16pro max) then hoping to get $1400 off then 10% off gift cards if some are floating round

    • Yes based on history . People were able to price match using similar deal . But where is $1941 listed and cannot see anywhere . 16 pro max 256GB seems well over $2100

    • Can you please share where can you find pro Max for 1941? Also what about 10% off gift cards?

      • 10% off through Woolies TCN offer here. If you are lucky to find them in shelves

      • Was at Amazon for $1900 but no more as no stock. There were EOFY sales but now everything is back to full price

  • Only Iphone 16 128GB, all the rest are excluded…

    • How so? Clearly has it u see pro max ? $1400 off

      • My bad. Saw this on their website which is applicable for the promo till end of July 30. "r cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term. Excludes iPhone 16 256GB/512GB, iPhone 16e, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro/Max models."

  • +5

I just picked up the 16 Pro 256gb for $1,354.59 ($1,183.32 with TRS later).

They wouldn't match Dicksmith, Kogan, or Costco without membership, but I was able to get them to price match Retravision (https://www.retravision.com.au/apple-iphone-16-pro-256gb-bla…).

$1884 (Retravision price plus $9 delivery)
    - $1400
    + $5 (Aldi sim)
    + $99 (Telstra first month)
    + $766.59 (early termination)

Paid the remaining at JB using gift cards I got from previous trade ins.

    • Have you terminated already?

      • +1

Yep. I terminated the moment I got home. Just messaged chat on the Telstra site. Very straight forward. They said it would be $766.59, exactly as expected. I got a confirmation email shortly afterwards saying it will charge my card on the 24th, but if I want, I can login and pay right away.

        • How did you terminate? Telstra is saying I don’t have a service. Do I need to cancel through JB mobile?
          Thanks

          • @blackdiamond: I just messaged chat on the Telstra website. I might have been logged in. They didn't ask any extra questions. If they're not sure, maybe you can give them the phone number of the JB service. But definitely Telstra chat should be able to do it.

    • I just now bought the same pro 256g for 1879 price matching with retravision. Was trying my luck to price match with Amaysim 1749+ 30 for the plan and manager didn’t budge. I am just hoping the price drops in 14 days across major retailers so I can get some credit back

    • Does the price match only work for the colour? I would like the white 16 pro, but Retravision doesn't seem to have it.

      • Based on what was told to me by the agent as per manager instructions, they verify the exact model number from retravision . I assume the model number changes based on color

    • Which store

    • thank you @mickdee

I did exactly this, salesguy was friendly to reduce the price of phone to $2000 to bundle with a phone case, so total price on receipt was $2026, GST of $184.18. I had giftcard of $270, so today I paid $99 + $356 + 766.65

This deal will change to $1200 giftcard now from tomorrow as per the salesguy.

Regarding credit check, first check sometimes fails and they have to try again. The phone repayment fee wont be reflected on your credit score if you pay it before its due.

  • Hi, just had a quick qustion, can you use trade in credit to pay off the maximum vouvher repayment fee? I.e. I either trade my iphone 15 pro for $805 at telstra, then they said the money gets added as credit into my account, can that be used to pay off the early termination fee? OR would i need to trade in to Jb-hi-fi? Because I'm assuming the early termination fee is being paid to telstra right?

  • Yeah, the early termination fee is paid to Telstra. So for my case I only used gift cards on the remaining amount after the $1400 discount. I'm not sure if you trade in your phone to Telstra if you can use that to pay the early termination on their side, sorry. It sounds like it's a possibility, but would probably be best to give them a call to confirm, or visit a store. Also, have a look at selling your 15 pro second hand as well. I'm not too familiar with prices, but often you can get more than a trade in unless the trade in has bonus credit. Good luck!

    • Did they charge the termination fee right away?

      • No, while most JB staff are well aware of early termination approach, you are the one to request early termination of the 24 months plan. Some people would use the SIM for close to 1 month before terminating.

      • In my case, they sent me an invoice dated for the funds to be taken from my account on the 24th, with the option to pay right away.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Worked a treat with the ALDI number.

    '$1400 off iPhone 16 Range (iPhone 16 128GB $0) with JB Hi-Fi Mobile $99/M 24M SIM Plan (in-Store/Port-in Only) @ JB Hi-Fi'

    $1400 off if I agree to pay $2376 ? Where do I sign !???

  • Is it better to get the 16 pro or the 17 pro? My main concern is that they're going to switch to 12gb RAM for the 17 Pro for AI, whereas the 16 Pro only has 8gb, so I am concerned with it's longevity.

    • The AI isn't even really working properly yet. And the leaks of the 17's design isn't that great in my opinion.

      • Yea, the 17 Pro is rumoured to go back to an aluminium body.

        • The 17 Pro also boasts 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness and reverse wireless charging for AirPods and Apple Watch.

          • @rqz: Yea i don't really value those features much, the iPhones are already plenty bright enough. I would like to own a titanium phone though

            • @nomadspartan: Why would you choose to own a titanium phone when an aluminium phone with a case can provide the same functionality?

    • 17 Pro has 12GB RAM and a larger battery. The 50% additional RAM is crucial for AI on-device processing. You will regret not getting 12GB RAM for future proofing

  • Can somebody confirm the steps involved?

1- Ill do the port in
2- Ill get iPhone after port in
3- After getting the phone, I am supposed to call/*chat somewhere to cancel the contract
4- I gotta pay somewhere, where? and some $800 for a basic iPhone 16
5- After paying that, Phone is still with me, the Jb-Hifi contract will end, and that will mean I can now have the phone.

—- Can this all be done online? Instead of walking in to the store?
—- Will i be claim any tax on this device? ie Income tax if i use it for work?

    • In store only. Pay $766.67 to Telstra to cancel the contract.

    • +8

      My exact steps were:

      1. Go to Aldi and buy the $5 starter sim.
      2. Go to JB to ask if they had the phone I wanted. After confirmation,
      3. Activate the Aldi sim.
      4. They went through the process to check my ID and do a credit check.
      5. I asked them if they could price match Retravision (they could in my case).
      6. Go to the front payment counter. They apply the $1400 gift card off the price.
      7. Use the gift cards I had from a previous trade in to pay the remaining off.
      8. Have them write my name on the receipt since I plan to TRS it later.
      9. Get home.
      10. Message Telstra on their chat support to cancel.
      11. Confirm with them the cancellation costs.
      12. All done!
      • For the aldi SIM card part. Do you need to activate it beforehand or can you just go and buy the phone and then activate it with the new phone.

        • aldi sim has 6 month validity.

        • +1

I’m pretty sure you need to activate it beforehand because that’s the dummy number you’re porting in which you will later cancel which will totally disconnect it.

        • +1

You need to have it activated. Usually it doesn't take long, and the guy who served me was pretty chill. So I told him I need to activate this $5 Aldi sim after asking if he had the phone. He said no problem, and basically I had it activated well before he was done with his side. Maybe bring a sim tool so you can change between them easily. I had to change back and forwards a few times, and so had to ask them to borrow theirs each time.

        • Need to activate the Aldi SIM beforehand and have it installed and able to receive a verification code.

I just followed mickdee's steps above. JB Hifi at Carseldine were great to deal with, didn't have any issues price matching Retravision. Telstra online chat were ok for the cancellation, but refused to refund me the $99 first month fee unfortunately.

  • I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, would it be worth to upgrade to the iPhone 16? I do really like the large screen of the pro max.

    • You probably notice lower refresh rate and camera?

  • +1

Hi everyone, I’m new here and just had a quick question (apologies if this has already been covered earlier).

Let’s say I buy the iPhone 16 on a JB Hi-Fi Telstra plan and then cancel within the first month. I noticed in one of the breakdown tables that the net cost comes out to around $870.59, which includes a $1400 JB Hi-Fi gift card being factored in.

    My question is:
Since that $1400 gift card value is shown as a deduction in the net cost, does that mean I can actually use the gift card to help pay off the handset or termination fee?

Or do I still have to pay the full amount upfront (e.g. $1397 for the phone + $766.59 termination fee + $99 JB port-in fee + $5 SIM = $2267.59), and then just keep the $1400 gift card to use on something else later?

In other words, even though the net cost works out lower, am I still paying the full $2,267.59 from my own pocket first, and only saving later by using the voucher elsewhere?

    Thanks in advance!

    • +6

There is no gift card to keep. Pay $0 for the iPhone 16 and $99 for a month of the plan. Pay $766.67 to Telstra to cancel the contract.
