Hi everyone, I’m new here and just had a quick question (apologies if this has already been covered earlier).

Let’s say I buy the iPhone 16 on a JB Hi-Fi Telstra plan and then cancel within the first month. I noticed in one of the breakdown tables that the net cost comes out to around $870.59, which includes a $1400 JB Hi-Fi gift card being factored in.

    My question is:
Since that $1400 gift card value is shown as a deduction in the net cost, does that mean I can actually use the gift card to help pay off the handset or termination fee?

Or do I still have to pay the full amount upfront (e.g. $1397 for the phone + $766.59 termination fee + $99 JB port-in fee + $5 SIM = $2267.59), and then just keep the $1400 gift card to use on something else later?

In other words, even though the net cost works out lower, am I still paying the full $2,267.59 from my own pocket first, and only saving later by using the voucher elsewhere?

    Thanks in advance!

    • +6

There is no gift card to keep. Pay $0 for the iPhone 16 and $99 for a month of the plan. Pay $766.67 to Telstra to cancel the contract.

Can we do price match with this one? $1400 for Pink iPhone 16 Plus

    • No. That is an international model.

  • Thanks OP.
Telstra told me to call back in 48 hours to refund the $99 so $766.59 out of pocket for a base 16.

    • They showed me the clause in the T&C's that the first month is not refunded, what did you say or who did you speak/chat with for the first month to be refunded?

  • Can I ask why use an Aldi sim?

Can I port my Optus number (out of contract so no canc fee) to Telstra, wait until it’s active and then port it back to Optus? Thereby effectively cancelling the Telstra contract?
Win win for me if I can do that as Optus are offering half priced plans for new port ins.

Is there any unforeseen issues in doing this?

  • Any downsides to porting back out to cancel, instead of contact support? If I port out, will it automatically cancel the service and charge the early termination fee?

    • +1

Yes it does. I did it previously in Feb 2025. As soon as you port out, the remaining amount invoice is general on Telstra account.

Is this voucher only for the iPhone 16 series?

Would it be possible to keep the voucher and then use it for iPhone 17 series?

  • Hey guys does anybody knows if it shows at the invoice the full price of the mobile? Thanks

    • It does. The $1400 off counts as a gift card being applied to it. So it shows the full price of the mobile, or the price of the price matched mobile. If you plan to TRS it, it will be fine.

  • anyone did port out upon cancellation? try to keep the number.

  • can someone who have used the coupon and cancelled the plan, kindly advise pro rata cancellation fee is $766.59 while Telstra terms and conditions says coupon amount *(23/24) ? appreciate if you can help where was it mentioned the cancellation fee $766.59, thank you!

    • It was exactly that for me. I asked Telstra chat and they said that much. And I have mine cancelled already.

    • Yes mine was $766 cancellation fee too. Just got my new 256gb today.

  • Can anyone comment on whether 16 Plus -512gb- $1849 is a better deal than 16 Pro -256gb- $1875 for a heavy user?

    • +1

Honestly, in that comparison, most important question is whether you want a bigger screen or not. Next question is then are you serious amount phone photography? Or want a 120hz screen?

      • Thanks for that. Not too fussed on having a better camera. Battery and storage is always a good thing.

    • +2

      iPhone 16 Pro has:

      • ProMotion display (dynamic up to 120Hz), with always-on display support, slightly thinner bezel
      • One extra lens (telephoto), LiDAR scanner, ProRes Support
      • USB 3 support (could be used to record video)
      • Slightly faster GPU (with an extra GPU core)
      • Titanium build

16 Plus has better battery life and larger screen. Try to resist storage upgrade, that's where Apple makes a bigger profit. iPhone 17 series phones coming and current iPhone 16 prices are not all their all time best. Do take them into consideration.

      • Great info, thank you. Much appreciated.

  • in the JB HiFi TOS clause 6.2 says,

"If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher Repayment Fee)."

But Telstra CIS says max repayment is 800 bucks, so would there be any complications to the deal?

    • This is my confusion too, I wonder if 6.1 and 6.2 refer to “porting out” instead of completely canceling and disconnecting the phone. Then I also wonder if it’s a case of canceling via Telstra directly will get you the $800 fee instead of via the JB Hifi mobile app. The more in look into this the less I know.

      • I don’t port out. Used Aldi sim. Cancelled via Telstra. $766.

        If using other methods YMMV

        • I’ve done some more reading on this topic and looked through the comments on previous now expired posts and it make more sense. Seems like an easy process. One question is I have an iPhone 13, what can I use the trade in voucher for, I assume that can’t be used to pay the exit fee.

          • +1

@rjozsa: No you are paying Telstra the exit fee, nothing to do with JB

            • @BatmanAU: Thank you, I thought as much. I appreciate the info. This is a great deal I must say.

  • is this the cheapest seen for a 16 pro 256+ gb? been rolling with an 11 pro for a few years now and while still not desperate for an upgrade, would better to snap one up if its a good opportunity.

also is this a common offer from jb? would be interested if we see a similar deal like this for the upcoming 17

  • Why is everyone saying Aldi $5 sim, go grab a Coles or Woollies $2 sim (for true OzB's)

    • Most of these SIM card requires to recharge for activation. Aldi SIM card for sure doesn’t need it.

    • -1

because people does not want to port-in their current number for this deal. They are getting an alternate number just for this deal.

      • +1

Who is saying to port their own numbers across???????

    • +2

Someone posted that there’s also a 7 day trial from Optus for a free eSIM.

      • +1

Not sure if you can use that. I read in one of the article "If you sign up for the free SIM, you'll be given a new phone number - there's no option to port your existing number across for the trial. If you do want to keep the number issued as part of the trial, you'll need to sign up to an Optus mobile plan within 30 days of the trial expiring."

        • Thanks for the explanation, that actually does make sense so I guess it’s best to play it safe and just get a cheap sim elsewhere.

Just grab this deal with price match to Amaysim deal, so $1347 for iPhone 16. 256GB. Cannot happy more

    • So you paid $1347 from Amaysim for iPhone 16 without having to go through jb hifi and jumping through hoops?

      • checked the invoice, it's 1349 actually, but no cash out for the surplus fund. I bought something else to make order over 1400

    • Hi
Which store as I was told can’t price match to amaysim or Vodafone because you need to either buy a sim for that price or need an account

    • You need to buy a SIM for Amaysim so they don't do price match with them

    • Did you have amaysim price match or did JB? Sorry, read it twice and had a moment of confusion.

  • how do I cancel my plan Im not sure where to start can you do it from the jbhifi mobile website?

    never mind found it

  • I want to get the ipgone 16, but im a ozbargain newbie, how does it work (i understand u have to cnacel) but what do I tell/ask jb. Thanks

    • Sign up first for the plan in store, get the phone and then go on the app and cancel the plan and pay outright cancellation.

Buy a Sim first from another network so you get a mobile number and then port in to JB plan.

  • what exactly is being excluded for iphone 16 256gb/512gb, iphone 16e, iphone 16 plus, iphone 16 pro/max models in the small print? Payment of the $766 or it's not possible to cancel?

  • Just confirming for anyone wondering if you can simply port your number out to cancel your 24 months contract. I bought an iPhone 16 Pro 256GB from JB Hi-Fi yesterday using the $1,400 voucher deal, then ported my number to Boost the same day without contacting Telstra beforehand. The contract was automatically cancelled and an invoice for $766.59 was sent by JB Hi-Fi Mobile on behalf of Telstra as an early termination fee.

    • And how much you pay on first day?

      • After receiving the invoice, I chatted with a Telstra rep to try and get the $99 I paid instore refunded. I managed to get it waived, so I guess it really depends on who you talk to.

        • lucky you, it's even less than the repayment fee $800.

        • So what did you say to have them waive it, as im hearing that Telstra isnt doing that due to you having access to the data upon sign up

        • Did you have to pay $800 for cancellation in that case? Or still the 766 or so?

    • Can you explain me the whole process from being to buy and end it please it so confusing for me
Make it simple and steps ways

      • Try reading one of the other numerous responses to this same question, like here and here.

If there's a specific step you don't understand, specify that.

    • Thx for confirming this is the case. This is my intention as I’d like to keep the new number that I got.

  • Has anyone been able to get a better price for iPhone 16 Plus 256gb by price matching?

  • -1

JB wouldn’t price match to Amaysim. Matched to Retravision but had to be the same colour. 16PMax 256. Very difficult to deal with these slobs.

    • Which branch mate? The branch I checked with yesterday didnt allow pricematch.

I bought 2 phones on seperate accounts today. I am keeping the plan and phone with one account as this will be my work phone. When cancelling the second account via Telsta chat (tried 2 different consultants) I was told they could not waive the first month $99 fee "My apologies but per the terms we have we cannot be able to waive the fee. This is being strictly implemented due to numbers of cancellations we received on the first day of service". They were trying to apply the full $800 fee but when I pointed out it should be reduced by 1/24th given you will not reimburse the $99 fee they agreed so voucher payback was $800-$33.29=$766.71

  • +3

Hey OP and chat, thanks very much for the deal and all the tips and tricks. Managed to get this deal today at Hurstville JB Hi-Fi - it was a seamless process. As others have mentioned I tried to price match against Amaysim but no luck. However Retrovision was accepted and all went smoothly from then. Did try to port from Boost but didn't work so bought the $5 ALDI starter pack. Also there is a little hidden promo you can get any phone case for 50% off if you go with this deal. Cancelling was super easy too - even got $99 first month refund - I think calling the JB Hi Fi Mobile phone line is the way to go - very good service and cancelled within 5 minutes. Btw the phone was a Pro Max 256GB.

Luckily I have a nice aunty in Canada who needs an iPhone so i'll be claiming the TRS!

    • When you cancel did they ask any questions? Also what type of ID check do you need for the credit check with JbHIFi? Thanks

    • Can you please step by step process how did you do the whole thing
I’m desperately in need of new phone i been eyeing on pro max 256 for long time
      I would really appreciate it

      • +16

I think someone already posted a couple links to people giving a step by step, but here are the steps to getting an iPhone 16 or other versions as I understand it to be. I’m not going into price matching or this TRS stuff (I believe it’s some sort of refund scheme) anyway I won’t discuss that, just the easy steps to getting the iPhone.

Keep in mind this promotion is for PORT IN ONLY therefore you don’t want to use your own personal number unless you want to lose it. To avoid that follow the steps to obtain a dummy/burner number. Best to leave your number alone.

        1. As mentioned because this deal is available to PORT IN only, get yourself an Aldi $5 sim and immediately activate it, so the service is active. No need to buy credit to activate with Aldi, that’s why this sim is the go to choice.

        2. Take yourself in person to a JB Hifi of your choice, have a look at the iPhone, you want to see if they have it in stock, if not and you have your heart set on it, try another JB.

        3. Once you have found the iPhone you want, go through the process of signing up to the $99 plan currently part of the promotion. Have suitable ID with you, no different to signing up at other telco stores, ID is confirmed and credit checks conducted.

        4. Once approved for the iPhone you will be directed to the counter to firstly pay the outstanding amount (if any on the phone) and the first month $99 instalment of the mobile phone plan.

The amount outstanding is the phone price minus $1400 JB Hifi voucher they are offering. In the case of an iPhone 16 the amount outstanding is zero.

In the case of the iPhone 16 Pro Max 256 (your choice) the amount outstanding is $747 ($2147 minus $1400).

So payment at counter is $99 for first month and $747 outstanding for the IPhone = $846 payable then and there.

        1. Now leave the store and head home, enough shopping for the day.

        2. Once you get home, you need to cancel the service. Cancelling the service will disconnect the number completely, this is why the Aldi sim is needed, that number was just a throw away to use this deal.

To cancel some have said they just used Telstra online chat and were able to do it that way, others have simply just called JB Hifi mobile customer service and were able to cancel it that way.

        1. To cancel you don’t need an elaborate story, simply say you wish to completely cancel the service and that you are aware of the cancellation fee and would like to cancel immediately. Confirm with them the cancellation fee (should be $800 or less some say $766+ because it’s pro rated etc).

You can also try to negotiate a refund of the $99 you just paid in the JB Hifi store, being your first month of the phone plan and you might be lucky and have that waived. It’s not a guarantee but it’s worth asking.

And that’s it, basically at the end of the day you got a phone, worth $2147 for a max of approx $1651 (assuming no refund of $99 and cancellation fee payment of $800, the $5 Aldi sim and the outstanding payment of $747 after the voucher is applied), and that amount might be even less if the cancellation fee is $766+.

Now after all this someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. This is what I garnered from all the explanations here and previous posts on this JB offer.

        • +2

          Legend will try
          It’s crystal clear now

        • Thank you so much for this. How long does it take to activate the Aldi sim card. Could I do all this today? I think the offer expires today.

          • @DeadlyDelta: I’m really sorry I just saw your message, it might be a moot point now but Aldi sim activation is very quick a matter of minutes really (unless some network problems). Yes the offer on the IPhone 16 pro max etc did finish today (16/7) but the base Iphone 16 128gb does last until 30/7/25.

If you went ahead I hope all went well.

            • +1

@rjozsa: Thank you. Yep, I got it done today in about 15 mins and got the Pro model today as well, so all good :)

        • Can the first month $99 instalment be paid via gift card?

          • @mameimo: Best to check with store directly, I’ve never used a gift card with JB. Just call a store before going in.

    • They offered me to get a discounted screen protector/case too, but I declined and didn't ask for more details assuming it would still be well overpriced. Maybe I should have looked!

Did you get charged $800 for cancellation after getting the $99 refunded? I never even considered trying when I cancelled.

      • +2

I paid $5 for the phonecase. $30 RRP, $15 after 50% discount and $5 after $10 perks voucher. Mind you I am very prone to dropping my phone so I bought it to cover my phone while I wait for my Spigen case to be delivered.

The early termination fee ended up being $766.59. When they asked why I was cancelling I made up a bogus story about mistakenly signing up to the contract and followed it up with saying that I'd be real grateful if they credited the $99 back to my card since I'd literally been on the plan for 4 hours. The operator was understanding and said he'd process the refund once the payment had settled on their end. I was given a reference number for the call and will be keeping a close eye on my CC transactions!

        • Did you chat with Telstra or Jb Hi-fi when cancelling?

  • cases and screen protectors are supposedly gimmicks and are sold at premium prices even when reduced by 1/2 price at JB

  • Successfully got this deal and I’m now at the stage where I just need to cancel the mobile plan, but need to clarify something in case I’m about to throw $800 away.

My question is: do I actually have access to a “$800 voucher” to spend at JB before cancelling? Or am i misunderstanding?

If not then I assume the $1400 off IS the “voucher” which I “used” on the phone and then the repayment for not holding up my end of the deal is only $800 (23/24) rather than $1400?

    • +2

The $1400 IS the voucher and it was applied to the phone when you signed up I’m store. That voucher is now used and forgotten.

The $800 is NOT a voucher for you to use.

The $800 (or possibly just less at $766 pro rated) will be the cancellation fee or look at it as the EXIT fee which will be your final bill and payable to Telstra.

      • +1

        Put another way:

        • iPhone 16 128GB = $1400
You would be $1400 poorer buying the phone.
        • 24 month phone plan 'port in bonus' = $1400 voucher
JB offers you a $1400 voucher towards your phone, at the cost of a $99pm 'JB-Telstra' phone plan for 24 months.
        • Cancel '24 month phone plan' day 1 = $800 cost
You contact Telstra chat support, and ask to cancel your 24 month contract (on day/hour 1 of your 24 month contract). The maximum charge to cancel is $800.

After confirming, you've just exchanged an $800 "cancellation charge", for a $1400 phone.
(There is some discrepancy on the exact figure, as some people are charged for the "first month" of their $99pm plan, some are "pro-rated" for the day/hours of usage, some do not etc)

If you opted for a more expensive phone, then that would've been invoiced at the JB HiFi checkout.

  • has anyone gone throuigh the port in process and cancellation successfully and can confirm the early payout is consistent with what is expected?

    • +1

Yes. Ported in yesterday and cancelled that evening and this can be done through Telstra or JB Hifi webchat. Confirmed cancellation fee was $766 but they would not waive the first month fee. Invoice recieved after call for cancellation fee.

    • +1

      Yep - did it yesterday.

      • Why cancel so soon, if 99$ is not refundable? Why not use it for 30 days and then cancel. I don't think there will be any changes in the cancellation fee as its a signed document already.

        • Because I already have a phone plan, and only wanted the phone. The service was never going to be used anyway.

          • @CharcoaI: Fair enough. I actually moved my main number on it. Will port out in 30 days. Have done it before and it is much better IMO as I don't have to contact anyone. Just port your number out and immediately you get an invoice of the remaining amount out of 800.

  • Any deals on the pro 128 gb at the moment that I can use to price match? The retravision deal is no longer available.

    • +1

Yeah just went into the store and retravision have removed the Pro 128GB, DAMN!

  • +3

I went into store on saturday for just the stock standard IP 16 128 (jb online price 1397) and they staff member just said to me I can give you the 256 version at same price (jb online price 1597). not sure he price matched anyone and i didnt take a look but took up the offer straight away. bought a sim there, didnt read about aldi, so spent $15 on the boost one. Activated, transferred to jb and cancelled the same day. Paid the $99, and repayment for ETF is 766.59. now I am trying to get the 99 waived and telstra online said await to 17/7 to try again as the amount is still pending. So all up 99 + 766.59 + 15 = $880.59 for me for a $1597 phone, saved $716.41. Thank you OP and OZB community.

Then when i tried to cancel the sim, their chat was offline so i had to call jb/telstra. Lady asked me why i am i cancelling, she asked 5 times. I just put on my best accent and said I want to cancel no reason and it was done.

    • Did you get the $99 waived?

      • If I can't get $99 waived is it worth it to just use it for the first month and then do we pay a reduced cancellation fee?

        • you already pay your first month, so may as well use it, just ensure you don't cop the next month pay

      • +1

No not yet, they said the money hasn't cleared and to call/chat with them on the 17/7.

        • I got the $99 refunded - just chat via telstra jb app, no questions asked. I didnt activate the sim either.

  • Wednesday 16/7 might be the last day for this offer as the JB Hi-Fi store I went to had signs saying the 1400 off the iphone 16 range ends after 16 July, and the reps confirmed the same.

  • Firstly thanks OP & others for posting the deal & laying out the steps to get this. So an iphone 16 for $766 what would jb pay Apple for an iphone are they losing money when people do this? Just interested

  • oh my I think my head was in the clouds when I just went in to a jb!!!??? I was so nervous for some reason about this being a scam/fraud that I'm pretty sure I made a big blunder.
I am with Kogan on my current phone. I bought a $5 Aldi sim on Saturday, I activated it early this morning, 10am I went a bought an Iphone 16 256gb from JB signed up for the $99 monthly plan for 24 months had the $1400 taken off the price of the phone BUT I gave them my Kogan number not the new Aldi number grrrrr !!!
Do I ring JB/Telstra to cancel plan- will I lose the number I've had for 15 years. I'm such a moron!!!!

    • +1

no just go ahead with everything then port it out to another telco (even back to Kogan or to the Aldi one you have purchased) which will cancel the new jb plan. You keep the number, I'd suggest using the $99 you paid to telstra for the first month just port out before they take payment for 2nd month. Don't stress it's fine you have a month
