Thank you Irishness. Thought i had completely screwed up!!!

  • For the TRS claim at the airport, can you present just the receipt for the phone purchase at JB Hi-Fi (eg. the Pro Max 512GB for $2847 - $ 1400 = $1447) or do you have to show the receipt for the contract termination fees as well to show the total of $2312.59?

Need to know because I have a total duty free pool value of $1800 to spend within. If I exceed this I can't claim the TRS.

Also are $5 Aldimobile SIMs recommended because the port from Telstra to Telstra is quicker? I activated it last night at 9pm and I still don't have a service with a new number yet.

I'm thinking of spinning up a $2 Koganmobile eSIM which will be cheaper and more instant. Aware that Vodafone to Telstra will be slower.

    • I think the invoice shows the $2847 so its above your threshold. As far as i know you can claim trs but you also have to declare/pay it back upon return to Australia.

      • Oh I thought it would be the sale price of $1447 (or total $2312.59 spent including contract termination) rather than the marked price of $2847.

        • Once you unbox a phone, it's value substantially drops, so this is the "value" that you would have to declare when coming back - the value on the second hand market, not the value when brand new. Being a phone, it would depreciate quite heavily.

    • Just to reverse myself, an Aldimobile or any Telstra based number is pretty much the only option for issue free number porting and you want this because the $1400 giftcard which you need to buy on the day will not be generated until the number port is confirmed.

If you come from a non-Telstra provider you risk the port failing or taking too long and you don't want this to happen after having spent time with the sales person agreeing to all the contract conditions, setting up the direct debit (a Revolut virtual card number is best here) and paying the $99 first month advance.

Btw this sale ends 16 July (tomorrow).

      • not in my case, mine was taking too long to port while I waited in store, the rep eventually put it through gave me the phone & said it would port across at some point, took a while but eventually was confirmed, so they can do it

      • Our sales woman said she couldn't generate the $1400 giftcard until the port completed. Which means that you had a better sales person that we did! Luckily the number port from Aldimobile didn't take too long to complete.

I had a Lebara (Voda) number which I'm glad I didn't use because Lebara didn't even ask for govt ID verification (just name and DOB) to get an active service. So many levels of dodgy that I'm sure the port to Telstra would have failed.

    Hello Everyone,
First of all a very big thanks to OP for this post. Was able to grab myself an iPhone 16 256 GB for $1400 today.

As suggested by everyone, came back and cancelled my plan immediately. Was able to ask a friendly agent to refund me the $99 firs month plan.

My question is , how soon after cancellation will I receive the cancellation voucher invoice. Will it be from JB hifi, or will it be Telstra who will send me the invoice.

    Haven't received anything yet.

    Thanks

    • +2

should arrive in a matter of hours after cancellation, email is from telstra notify (jbmobile.jbhifi.com.au) you will also likely get multiple refund emails from them for the $99 (possibly in partial payments) you will have approx 10 business days before they take payment for the cancelled voucher ($766)

      • +2

Thank you so much. I was able to login to the JBmobile account and check the invoice that has been generated for the amount $766.59

  • Can anyone please confirm how long the $99 refund takes to come through after being confirmed on JB mobile chat? TIA :))

    • +1

      telstra agent said 7 days

  • +2

JB chat forwarded me onto Telstra guy, he refund me crying

  • I bought 2 plans at the weekend with a iPhone Pro/Plus. I cancelled one plan but kept the other as it will be my work phone. My question is can I go in and get another phone/plan tomorrow (for my son so will be cancelling it to keep the phone). Is there a limit on how many you can get and is the fact I cancelled one going to raise a red flag?

    • There is a limit of 3 as far as it is mentioned. Not sure if it is 3 in a year or 3 at a time.

  • i was trapped for 2 yrs, no good at all. Buy a prepaid sim have a peaceful life. Even after the contract finish they keep charging you. You know how easy to loose money. Lesson learnt hard way.

  • Do we really need new sim from ALDI? Can jb hifi provide one? Sorry i am new, so wanted to ask.

    • Yes because only Aldimobile can give you a $2 SIM + $3 PAYG credit with no more to pay for a mobile service you are going to terminate straight away and never use.

JB Hi-Fi don't have a PAYG service option let alone a dirt cheap throw away one like Aldimobile.

      • What do i have to pay at jbhifi if i do not buy sim from aldi?

        • +1

$39 at JB Hi-Fi versus $5 through Aldimobile

That's if you want to do it all in-store at JB.

          • @SUATMM: Thanks. So the process is, get a sim from aldi (activation required before jbhifi process?), walk into jbhidfi and get an iPhone, signup for that $99 offer, if approved, Ill get the device and walk home?

Now when home, call the telstra and say I no longer want this $99 offer, pls cancel it for me, and if possible pls wave off this $99 charges, otherwise Ill be charged this $99.

Now, once this package has been cancelled. Tesltra will charge my CARD $800 or so.

I get the phone, and that'd be it. Is my understanding correct?

          • @SUATMM: Can I use this sim instead? https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/telstra-2-…

            Telstra $2 Prepaid SIM

            • @thefakeemailguy: If for $2 you can establish an account, get a number you can receive calls on and have it associated with your full name and DOB verified by a govt ID check, then yes you can.

If you have to pay $13 extra for the cheapest 7 day pre paid plan from Telstra to do all of that, then Aldimobile will win.

            • +2

@thefakeemailguy: No you can’t port in a Telstra number as the JB plan is with Telstra.

  • I just went to JB and tried to do this deal. I did everything right, bought an Aldi SIM and everything. We got to the credit check, and apparently I failed it. I provided everything correctly and didn’t lie about a single thing. I make around 8k a month for the past seven years, so I refuse to believe I failed because of income. From what I’ve read, some people were even lying on their credit checks and still passed, so I don’t really know what happened in my situation.

Also, the JB salesperson said the cancellation fee might rise to 1000 soon. Their manager was in a meeting, but when I was doing it, it was still 800. So if you’re trying to do this, make sure to ask the salesperson what the cancellation fee is before you sign anything.

If anyone can help, is there any way I can check why I failed my credit check?

    • So will I be paying $1400 or $800 for the cancellation fee? I am thinking of trying it today.

      • +1

the documents are all linked on here

    • 800$ cancellation fee is part of the contract document you sign. They should be able to provide you a copy of that as well with the purchase.

    • I am thinking to go today and i am also likely to get a credit check failure lol. Still worth trying hey!

  • Can anyone confirm if this is still working? i might go in thurs night and grab one

    • For normal iPhone 16, offer expires 30th July, for other iPhone 16 models, offer expires 16 July (today).

      • I’m interested in the iPhone 16, not the Plus or Pro models. Does that mean I can apply before the 30th and do not need to rush today?

        • Just go on the JB website and see when the offer ends for each specific model. As per the website, what you're saying is correct.

  • How long does it take to activate the Aldi sim before going to the JB store?

    • It took about 10 mins for me. The employee was able to start the process while it was activating but I would recommend activating it before you go to the store so long as you are confident they will have stock of the phone you’re after.

    • +1

It was about 10 minutes for me too. Did it in store after asking for the phone. But would also recommend doing it earlier if possible as some people have said it ended up taking much longer.

      • How long does the whole onboarding process take for JB Hi Fi to sort out the new plan?

        • +1

About 15 minutes of showing you important Ts&Cs, filling in your details and getting you to agree to stuff. Much longer if there's any loose sales talk, less than optimal data entry competency or telling you stuff you already know.

        • +1

I was there for over an hour. But it seemed like the guy had to go backwards and forwards with checking some stuff with coworkers.

  • Went to aldi. They didn’t have any $5 sims left.
So bought kogan $12 esim plan. Activated. (Number needs to be activated and be able to receive text message for the codes).

Went to JB. They Didn’t reduce price for iPhone 16 256gb. So went with 128gb. Signed up.

They took bank details for monthly plan deductions.

Came out of store with new iPhone. sat down in the Sofa in the shopping centre and then called JB mobile call Centre to cancel the plan. She asked me what was the reason I said I just wanted to cancel and then there was an awkward 30 secs silence and she asked me again. What’s the reason I said nothing just wanted to cancel. She went ahead and cancelled the plan and also said if I call back in a couple days time, $99 for the first month will be reimbursed which she gave me reference number for.
Email received later saying $766 will deducted in 10 days for your plan cancellation.

    • simple reason to give for cancelling is 'change of mind'

  • I did it yesterday and got 2 iPhone 16's. I wasn't charged the $99 yet. Went online they said exit fee is $799.92 each. The agent confirmed the plan is cancelled and that's all I have to pay. Received the invoices in my Telstra app and it's the same amount. No $99.

I price matched to Amaysim - Worked well for me today.

    For anyone curious:

    Item Amount Notes
    iPhone 16 Plus 256GB $1,797.00 Original price
Price Match to Amaysim -$248.00 Adjusted to $1,549
    Adjusted Price $1,549.00
    JB HiFi Voucher Applied -$1,400.00
    Remaining Balance $149.00
JB HiFi Gift Card (4.5% discount) $142.29 Actual amount paid out-of-pocket
    Aldi SIM $5.00
Telstra Plan (initial $99) Waived Waived after Telstra web chat
Telstra Cancellation Fee $766.59 Paid after cancelling plan
    Total Phone Cost $913.88 $142.29 (gift card) + $5 (SIM) + $766.59 (Telstra)
    Total Discount $883.12

The guy also threw in a phone case.

The whole thing took about 20 mins in store, and another 20 min to cancel the plan after.

    • +1

You lucky bastard! My JB Hi Fi store (Rouse Hill, NSW) had to be sort of convinced to price match Retravision, although they had no argument giving me the white iPhone Pro 256gb (which was not available at Retravision). And they apparently never heard of giving 50% of accessories (cases/screen protectors) when buying the phone in the same transaction, at best they could give me was 40% off.

Which branch was yours? Also, did you start the cancellation process straightaway when you went home?

      • I don't want to name the store so I don't get the sales assistant in trouble since I gather they probably weren't supposed to do that. (I am nowhere near you FYI).

I expected a fight for it, but I showed them the Amaysim price on my phone. Their response: "Sounds good man". They didn't even verify the website.

They even prompted me to pick a case for 50% off, I said throw it in and they agreed with no hassle.

I started the cancellation within about an hour of purchasing the phone. I ensured not to use the Telstra SIM at all so they can't say I benefited from the service (although I'm not sure if that helps with the $99 fee waiver).

    • This deserves to be a post in itself. Pretty significant chunk saved further. Which store did you go to if you don't mind sharing?

    • A rude female "so-called" manager at JB Hi-FI Knox refused to price-match even another young male saleperson was going to process it.
She said I could choose either the JB Hi-Fi gift card deal or price-match, but not both. F* !

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max 256 now 1997$ at JB Hifi.

    • They changed it ahead of tomorrow's $1200 giftcard. The current $1400 giftcard will go away after 16/07/2025.

  • so on the phone invoice, is it $0? so I can't claim any TRS on it?

    • No, the invoice amount is the total price of the phone.

      • ah cool, so first thing I should ask is can they price match + $1400 off if I sign up the plan? then yes I will go ahead. OW seems to have it cheaper on the 256gb 16.

        • +4

Yes get them to price match whatever you have in mind, then ask for this offer if isn’t already prompted.

You can ozb further by getting some 4.5% discounted JB gift cards to pay the difference with.

If you pay the cancelation fee in the Telstra portal, you’ll get enough Telstra points for a $10 gift card for a listed retailer too - just a pro tip

          • @GalaxySkater58: How long before the reward get credited? Thanks!

          • @GalaxySkater58: OMG, why isn't this on my deafult. Just checked I had to click "join telstra plus" - thats it, not tick box or terms and conditions. But i already paid, bugger.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16714970/redir

      1. Go to Aldi and buy the $5 starter sim.
      2. Go to JB to ask if they had the phone I wanted. After confirmation,
      3. Activate the Aldi sim.
      4. They went through the process to check my ID and do a credit check.
      5. I asked them if they could price match Retravision (they could in my case).
      6. Go to the front payment counter. They apply the $1400 gift card off the price.
      7. Use the gift cards I had from a previous trade in to pay the remaining off.
      8. Have them write my name on the receipt since I plan to TRS it later.
      9. Get home.
      10. Message Telstra on their chat support to cancel.
      11. Confirm with them the cancellation costs.
        All done!

I did exactly this, salesguy was friendly to reduce the price of phone to $2000 to bundle with a phone case, so total price on receipt was 2026, GST of $184.18.

This deal will change to $1200 giftcard now from tomorrow as per the salesguy.

Regarding credit check, first check sometimes fails and they have to try again. The phone repayment fee wont be reflected on your credit score if you pay it before its due.

      • well that sucks if its 1400, thought was till end of month.

        • you will be fine if you are only after the iphone 16 and not pro/promax/plus

  • With the IPhone 17 coming soon. I decided to not get this deal.

    • Well. If you are thinking of having a latest tech then wait but if you just want good price for the good device , 16 will never get to around 800 mark even after 17 release.

    • The iPhones are going back to aluminium soon, not that it should matter much, but I wanted to own a titanium phone so I jumped on this deal. Upgraded from an iPhone 12 mini, that I purchased from the legendary Amaysim deal that was on Ozbargain 2 years ago.

  • Just a heads up i did get this today also but supposedly according to the sales rep Telstra will be upping the cancellation fees in about a week, the guy said to be somewhere near the $1200 mark or more.

    • Thanks. Looks like this could be the last amazing JB mobile deal.

    • likely due to all of us on here haha

  • +1

Promo has ended for the $1400 off, but it’s now $1250 off instead since the iPhone 16 range has dropped by $150

    • What does this mean for iPhone 16 models, voucher is for 1400, can buy anything off the store for the rest of $150?

      • Same for the iPhone 16, since the price is now $1247, which means $0 upfront

  • Guys! Is this legal or ethically right to do this? I wanna do this but since last night, I am getting a eerie feeling as if Ill be doing something wrong.

    • +4

The way I see it is that you don't owe any of these companies anything. Their main motive is profit maximisation at your own expense and to pay as little taxes as possible. Like I mean, think how Telstra held the nation hostage by not upgrading their internet infrastructure from copper (ADSL2+ days), that the government was forced to build out their own fibre network (NBN). Think about how Telstra sold their copper network of trenches to the NBN for billion dollar payments that continue for years (at the tax payers expense), only for the NBN to find that most of it was in a shit condition and had to spend more billions to remediate it (again, at the tax payers expense).

Imagine if Donald Trump was PM of Australia…wouldn't you think these companies would lobby hard, like US companies do, for anti-consumer laws to come into effect?

We don't owe any of these companies anything - you're just doing the same back at them!

      • So there is nothing wrong in doing this? and nothing will haunt back in future related to this, right?

  • +2

Has it always had this line in the T&Cs, or is this new?

The $1250 off the current ticketed price of the iPhone 16 (referred to as the "JB Hi-Fi Voucher" in the Telstra Terms and Conditions available at www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms) replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be applied to the purchase price of the iPhone 16 handset instore after connection approval by Telstra. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan's minimum term. Excludes iPhone 16e.

    • saw this also, keen to hear if this impacts the deal.
thinking of jumping on this tomorrow.

      • Keep us posted

        • +1

          Still $800 Maximum voucher repayment.

@cycloneaussie: Pretty chaffed with an upgrade at just shy of $600.

            Item Cost
            Iphone Pro 16 128gb $1647
            Amaysim Price Match -$98
            Voucher -$1250
            Libara from Coles $9
            Plan First Month $99
            Plan Refund -$99
            Early Termination $766.59
            MobileGuru Tradein (IP14 128gb) -$480
            Total $594.59

@cycloneaussie: ah great was gonna marketplace my old iphone but for a few dollars less than I was going to advertise I can mobileguru it & not have deal with all the scammers & idiots

      • literally same, got the $5 sim but no idea about that comment- anyone got it today?

    • +2

      Yes that’s always been there

    • +1

Yes that has always said that. Read it carefully without the confusing brackets which I have removed,

The $1250 off the current ticketed price of the iPhone 16 replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be applied to the purchase price of the iPhone 16 handset instore after connection approval by Telstra.

It just reiterates the Voucher will be applied. It’s important to note the that only thing payable on cancellation is the FEE, named the Voucher Repayment Fee. This is not to be confused with repayment of the VOUCHER itself. The operative word here is fee. You will be good to go.

      • +2

Cheers! I did also think they’d probably show the critical summary in store, just take a photo and that’s it!

        • No problem. Glad all was good.

      • 6.3 The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your
Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:
        (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;
        (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and
        (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received.

  • So anyone know if cancellation price has changed? I am away and won’t be back till next week and really want to use this opportunity to get iphone 16.

  • Is there another recommended Sim card? I stopped by two Aldi's and they both didn't have any in-stock

  • Could someone please confirm that the tax invoice you receive upon signing up at JB shows the full amount of the phone?

    • Yes

    • does this mean if you are buying on Company account, the GST will get adjusted by around 150$

Would invoice show GST of 150$ even if gift voucher is used?

  • -1

Gave into this deal on Wednesday Pretty as I was pretty much at full storage capacity using the iPhone 13 128gb. In total I am out of pocket $865 for the 16 256gb as Telstra refused to reimburse the $99. Following this I used mobile guru to sell my old phone for $404. Pretty much got a brand new phone with double the storage for $461.
