Difference ins screen between regular and XL is massive. Whole 0.4 inch

    • +7

I wish the regular was a bit smaller.

      My hands are too small.

      • +9

        That's what she said.

      • +5

I just want a google phone with a 5" screen, like the Nexus 5 and Pixel 1. I hated my Nexus 6p because it was too big.

      • They're actually not that big at all. Although this doesn't have small bezels by 2019 standards, it's considerably smaller than a 16:9 5.6" screen. It's pretty narrow at 70mm albeit a little taller than the s10e

    • +7

But 3700 mAh battery vs 3000.

    • +1

      That's what she said

  • Do these have expandable memory slot and also how would warranty be treated if bought US?

    • +15

Pretty sure no Pixel phones ever had any expandable memory slots.

    • +1

no expandable memory. the 64GB limit is a shame as I've found 128GB to be the sweet spot.

      • Same here. Wish the 3a lineup comes in 128gb variants too.

      • One of my friends who owns a pixel told me they give you unlimited cloud storage for your photos and videos. Maybe that's the reason for saving on storage hardware inside the phone.

        • +6

Apparently the 3a only does high quality backup for free, not full original quality like with the normal pixel devices. According to verge vid.

          • @simgue: That's quite a lame move by Google on their part.

          • +1

@simgue: unlimited "high quality" photo storage is free for everyone.

  • If only it would come with 128GB of storage.

    • +5

Don't forget you also get Free unlimited storage on Google Photos which saves me a heap of GB ;)

      • +3

        Edit…
Pixel 3a owners will get free unlimited online storage at “high” quality instead original quality. Basically, if a photo is larger than 16MP, it will be resized to 16MP. And any video larger than 4K will be resized to 1080p

        • -2

You do with photo/videos at 'high' quality.

          • +28

@magic8ballgag: But every Android Phone already has unlimited "High" quality storage, it does not count toward your combined Google Photo/Drive/mail storage. It's the "original" quality that makes the Pixel great, I have over 100GB of 4K videos.

            • @Bigboomboom: sorry but pixel 3a doesn't provide that.

Pixel 3a: ²Google Photos offers unlimited, online storage for all photos and videos uploaded in high quality. Photos and videos uploaded in high quality may be compressed or resized.

Pixel 3: ²Free unlimited online original-quality storage for all photos and videos uploaded to Google Photos from Pixel 3 through 1/31/2022. Photos and videos uploaded before 1/31/2022 will remain free at original-quality.

              • @snvl: I know, I was meaning to say the main Pixel series 1, 2 and 3 do and that's what the selling point is. Weird when 3a doesn't have that.

                • @Bigboomboom: Nothing weird, price is completely different

          • @magic8ballgag: So does anyone though.

        • +2

That’s the same for any android phone. Isn’t it?

          • @snvl: Even for every phone including iPhone (like mine).

            • @OrangeBJ: Not just Android and iPhone :-)

You can even upload photos from a traditional camera on a desktop.
Probably works fine on a Windows-10 tablet too.

        • Should be "any video larger than 1080p will be resized to 1080p".

      • +2

Quite tempted with the 3a XL but looking at my phone storage, almost 30GB is taken up by Spotify and Netflix (downloaded audio/video for offline playback). Thankfully my phone has expandable memory.. whereas the 3a has none… so that 64GB might be quite limiting or inconvenient at times.

      • Why the winky face?

      • This is an incredibly useful feature on the regular Pixel, my wife takes a stupendous number of photos of my daughters and the dog and the cats and they just keep piling up in Google Photos, absolutely no worries. Wouldn't be happy with it at a reduced quality though, seeing as the Pixel takes excellent resolution photos.

        • the original quality and high quality are practically the same due to great compression algorithsm (unless the photo is over 16mp or the video is over 4k then it gets downscaled, but no flagship has over 16mp or over 4k recording anyways)

          • +4

@nathan-drake: If viewed on the phone it's the same. But if you view it on a big monitor you'll see the artefacts in the compression. Which is not acceptable for a long term backup.

In a few yrs time with much bigger and better quality screens. You'll look back and regret you didn't back up the original quality photo.

            • @linkii: Agree with this, a couple of my photo albums are the ambient screen for my Chromecast, and any drop in resolution eg from my old phone or anyone elses in the album, you can notice on my ~5 year old TV, only going to be more relevant the further on we get.

        • Why dont you look at Google 1 storage, ~$2.50 per month for 100gb, can family share as well.

Also for others looking at full res storage, isn't this cheaper, get the 3a and pay for this?

      • -4

All phones get unlimited storage in 'high quality'

        Know your facts mate

        • +1

Mate I was just going off the BH description - I've got the Pixel 2 XL which is free storage at Full resolution - obviously couldn't edit my post with additional info as it had been replied too

          • -6

@urbancartel: Point remains, know your facts.

            • +1

@nikoris: I didn't say it has full resolution storage - so in fact my fact is correct and thats a fact

              • -4

                @urbancartel: No it's not.

You made it sound like its something exclusive to the pixel while the opstated he wanted 128gb.

                • +3

@nikoris: 'You made it sound like its something exclusive to the pixel' nah i didn't

Get out of bed on the wrong side champ?

  • +5

how about warranty? i remembered no international warranty before

    • Google AU warranty is pretty good. They send out a new device and you send the old one back when you receive the new one. I wouldn't save a few $$ in this case, as it's already for sale on googles AU store.

  • +12

U forgot to include NFC there (and Yes this phone has NFC)…. Ozbargain community like NFC…..

    • +11

How about band 28? We like that too.

      • +1

        It has that!

      • +4

        Already highlighted in description ;)

  • +25

As much as I love android, I'm hesitant to pre order a made by Google phone because the QC is not up to the mark, this is a gamble, especially with no local warranty

Imo better to wait a couple of months to ensure no major issues and then pick it up during a sale for similar price

    • +3

I have a Pixel 3 and while I love it when it works, I've had to get it replaced within a month of purchase.

People were unable to hear me and calls were dropping out even after updating the software, soft reset, hard reset and new sim card.

An old LG Q6 worked perfectly in all the places where the Pixel 3 wouldn't.

The new phone was fine for a couple of months but for the last few days has been terrible. A new update was released on 5 May so I have just updated and it seems to have improved a little, but not enough for me to consider sending it back and telling Optus I need a different phone even if it costs me more on a monthly basis.

No matter how great the features are, if it can't make and receive calls what is the point?

      • Yup, you are on point, they are not having the best track record for device updates with many updates breaking the core functionalities .

My work gave Pixel 2 to many employees, April update broke the call ability for sizeable amount of users and Google took its time to issue a fix as part of their regular fix channel.

I need to take calls over weekends and night times and I can't trust a Pixel to provide that assurance, hence I use a Samsung S8 - not the best when it comes to version upgrade - but then does an average user need to be on bleeding edge - I guess not.

        • Just as an update, the Pixel 3 has pretty much died as a phone. 90% of calls are now essentially useless.

Called up Optus and will be returning the phone with no extra charges and re-contracting to something else, as long as it is not a Pixel!

          • @iampoor: Good that Optus is making sure the customer is happy, Google dropped the ball major with this release of Pixel

  • +1

Sitting on the fence on this one…i would say this is a good price? Especially compared to local $650 which is a rip off.

  • I'm moving to the US in 2 months - does anyone know if I could just take this over and use it to jump on with a carrier there?

    • +6

You can (since it supports US bands), but rather go there and signup with a carrier for discounted phone!

  • Is there a big difference between the 3a and the 3?

  • +7

Who manufactures the 3a? I'll never buy another LG after my two 5x bootlooped.

    • +2

Yep, me too, would love to know. 5x and a G4 boot looped, so no more LG for me

    • +1

      I thought it was Foxconn.

    • +3

I love my v30 plus. Its a great phone.

      • So was the Nexus 5x….until it bootlooped.

        • Nexus 6P also bootlooped. That was Huawei.

  • +1

The 3a XL is there too for US 479 with a the 100 gift card. However like someone mentioned above, past Pixels have had quality issues. I'd wait it out for a sale on a local one just in case. Too much at 800 in Aus.

  • +9

Price is good but as the owner of a Nexus 6P/Pixel XL/Pixel 3… this discount isn't worth forfeiting warranty for a Google phone. Far too much of a gamble.

  • +1

What is the import GST treatment on a phone like this purchased from BH and shipped from the US?

When we buy things from US Amazon or eBAY, we will have to pay a 10% surcharge at checkout to account for Australian GST on import. What about buying from BH?

Will Aus customs hold the phone and ask the buyer to pay 10% before releasing?

    • No GST. It has been discussed (on B&H deals) before and I recently bought a 5z from them, no GST.

Didn't have an issue getting it, DHL delivered in about 3 to 4 days, from NJ to Mel.

      Another example
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448401#comment-7125444

      • So pretty much only purchases from big vendors who have registered with the GST program, like Amazon and eBay, will attract the GST component?

        • Only those who charge you GST at checkout when your total is below $1000 AU.

      • +1

They’re probably dodging their tax responsibilities, as I would be surprised they were under the GST registration threshold given they deal in goods regularly around $1000 a pop.

  • +10

My Nexus 5 died after entering into a never-ending power-up/shutdown cycle for no apparent reason.

My wife's Nexus 5x just died all of a sudden one day.

That being said, the 5 and 5x were made by LG, a different manufacturer to that of the Pixel 3a.

At the Australian Pixel 3a/XL price point, I would much rather pay just a bit more and get a Samsung S10e instead. Much faster processor, more and expandable memory and good cameras too.

    • +7

Nothing but bad luck with LG phones. Never getting them again.

      • this is manufactured by foxconn/google colaboration. LG is the display maker G-OLED

    • Not sure what you mean about the price point - what you get with the 3a for it's price is pretty amazing and you will be hard pressed to find better bang for your buck. Read/watch any of the reviews out so far.

The bloatware abomination that was the S4 really ruined Samsung for me, on top of it also just dieing one day. I've heard they have toned down their software a bit but it's definitely left a sour taste.

I had the opposite experience with my Nexus 6p - kicked on for 5 glorious years and just started showing signs of death in the last week - best phone I have had and the raw Android experience was amazing so I'll be replacing it with the 3a XL.

      • At the Australian price point, Pixel 3a and XL are $649 and $799, within a hairline's distance to that of an S10e with double the memory and IP rating

        • RRP for the S10e sits around $900-$1000 no? On sale probably a better buy right now, but by the same token would expect the 3a to go on promotion for ~500 once it loses it's new release shine

    • Good points, but have to say, I love the pixel UI and lack of bloatware.

It feels more simple and intuitive then sammys

    • This happened to me as well. Turns out the power button can fail or get gunk into it so it just turns itself on and off. Ended up squirting iso into it then mashing the crap out of it. Works alright now.

Custom ROMs from phone manufactures are pretty good now.Dont need stock ROM with lots of bugs and also the annual updates are only marginal now. Some updated features would already provide by custom ROMs.So Google is ripping us off with low to mid specs and poor quality of hardwares.

    • My experience is otherwise, the updates are much quicker and earlier than most

      • Updates are quicker, but if it is major OS update, you end up beta testing for Google (some apps won't be compatible).

Android Pie and Android One took away features and for phone makers opting for Android One, they have to let go of those features. Also, I don't get Android Pie's folder design. When not expanded, it is just a circle (which is okay) but why change it so the app thumbnail icons inside the folder get clipped by that circle? It wasn't like that before and it just looks ugly. Give us a choice on that, rather than just options on the actual app icons (and through developer options).

Also, a lot of commonly used apps (Phone, Messages, Keyboard(s)) are really slow on old Google phones. Even Apple made iOS 12 runs better on older phones. Also, Google Play store's single app update at a time….

    • Have old Google devices and found that while the first couple of major Android OS updates were good, the last one could really slow down the devices. Getting more updates is one thing, but if the final update is going to make the device painful to use, then it is better not to release it. It feels like, here comes the final update, let's make it painfully slow so you get so annoyed that you will upgrade to a new device.

Also, at times, Google devices feel like guinea pigs for beta testing new Android OSes. Once you upgraded to the first new release of Android, a number of apps stop working and you need to wait for updates.

      • Using a pixel 1 to write this comment right now. Zippy and bugfree on latest updates

  • To get warranty, all we need to do is ship it back to b&h right?

  • How does this compare with the s10e?

    • +2

It depends greatly depending what you need a phone to do/have.

For me S10e wins hands down.

      • how do the cameras compare?
My wife wants a new phone and camera is her #1 concern

        • +4

Have a look at the Huawei P30 then. Costs slightly more than s10e but can be offset by the Huawei $200 gift card promotion.

        • +4

The Camera is hard to compare, Pixel is more software processing mimicking DSLR while S10e has that traditional Samsung smartphone camera look. Hard to explain, but Samsung camera processing tends to ramp up brightness/exposure and doesn't make for pleasing colour overall. This is more apparent between Google NightSight Vs Samsung BrightNight mode. Best to look for camera review on both yourself, it's up to personal preference.

        • +1

I have not seen any photos from the new Pixel yet, but I like the saturated photos Samsung takes, each photo is filled with rich colour.

I recommend that you check few videos from MKBHD on YouTube:)

        • +2

The pixel's camera should win hands down - that is the one thing they didn't compromise on. It lacks the dedicated processing chip that the Pixel 3 has which processes the images faster so this means it takes an extra 3 - 4 seconds to process the images in the background but the quality is very similar very similar according to the reviews so far.

The bio of the Pixel 3a is pretty much a non-flagship (but still very capable) phone with a flagship camera.

        • This one is not comparing pixel and s10e, but here's a thing. For general use, many people like samsung camera setting. Many reviewer said pixel camera is arguably the best, but when it comes to general people, samsung shows a great quality of photos.

Taking a video on the other hand is a totally different story. S10e has much better quality.

          https://www.phonearena.com/news/Huawei-P30-Pro-loses-to-iPho…

      • ahh good thanks, the price tag for this is pretty attractive. I spent $790 on the s10e and would be spewing if it was inferior to the pixel

        • +1

S10e has one downside ( or upside considering how many bugs are there in each Pixel release ) - slow version updates, otherwise in other areas s10e wins

          — better screen
          — better design
          — waterproofing
          — wireless charging
The camera is not quiet up to the mark , but it is still a great camera - works well for most situations ( doesn't have a good night mode - but then keeping still for 10 seconds is hard to use for night mode anyway )

          • +1

@otter-raptor: Not sure about keeping still for 10 seconds because the longest (in pitch black lighting) that I have ever hold my Pixel 2 is 6 seconds and it produce noticeably better than the Samsung (pitch black photo, basically useless). For normal night shot with some lights like street light it takes 2-3 seconds at most.

            • @Bigboomboom: Yea night time are basically the same from pixel and S10, pitch black might be different, but S10 has pro mode if you can rest the phone on something it will produce a much better photo than pixel in pitch black.

            • +1

@Bigboomboom: Sorry mate don't own, going off my experience with a mate's 6 months or so back, so not accurate number

By the time the 6 seconds is reached the subject had moved or mobile was shaken ( no one uses a tripod with mobile normally ) - so though it is good, it is not a useful feature IMO

The same goes for Huawei P30 we got from JB Hifi Telstra deal - though the tech is amazing, it is not useful in many situations
