  • I have this. Its a great unit!

Nice price compared to when it launched. But what does it do? Tell you the weather? I just don't get these things. Lenovo, Google and Amazon must be losing a fortune on these things as they are so dumb.

  • I have this and I love it.
    It’s a bit slow though.

  • Can I make video calls on these? Facebook Messenger?

    • google duo works on mine

    • Only with google duo

  • After setting up lots of hue lights this suddenly appeals to me much more

    • It's handy to be able to manage the lights through touch. The only downside I think it's rather slow. You gotta click through the room then click on lights to see and control individual lights. Don't mind if it's fast and responsive but it's a bit laggy. It would be good if they list all the lights in the room without needing to click on lights button

      • Can't you set up scenes for different zones house?

    • I use HomeAssistant with my Hue stuff.

      • So do I, but it would be nice to have a display to change lights from. Or are you saying you use a HASS dashboard plugin and have it on a tablet or something?

  • How do I click & collect? Seems only delivery?

Can some tell me why you would pick this over say a cheap tablet?

    • -1

Or why they would pick this over a water fountain?

Perhaps you should ask your Google assistant what this is…

I am pretty sure there's nothing that this "smart display" can do that a tablet cannot. The only advantage may be that the speaker is slightly better than a stock tablet but that is a guess and easily solved.

Again, why pick this over a cheap tablet? Or do you think water fountains can also respond to "OK google"?

        • Specially enhanced for the kitchen/family room scenarios as a smart hub, so if you could get the advantages you would love it.

          • @Al123: It responds to "OK google" without you touching the screen, but it has a screen to respond you.

    • Why people bother buying GPS, Smart Display, E-Books, Digital Camera? why not just use a table? That's because these devices are specially design for its purpose.
I have Ipad and I got this, 10 inch version, way better than IPad.

Looks decent, always on, nicely angled unit, good speaker, always know where it is, dims at night time. Not the be all and end all but I like it for this reason.

Despite me posting this deal and ordering one last night, I've just cancelled it. I thought there'd be a playstore or something so I can download a couple of apps. Can't even do that. Can't even bring up my own recipes stored in OneDrive. Should down vote my own deal.

    • thanks op

It's a different type of device. The kind that you didn't know you needed until you started using it. I don't have home automation but enjoying my 10" version, which was heaps more expensive too (FHD IPS screen).

      • What do you use it for?

        • +2

I use mine to tell me the weather and news in the morning (plays video clips) whilst making my coffee, heaps of fun for my friends' youngsters, plays music pretty loudly via spotify and of course is a great sized digital clock. I don't have any home automation in place but I agree with above comments that it is a little slow (especially when interacting with the touch screen).

Whilst it's pretty locked to just being a smart display, it's not intended for anything more. I'm also balls deep in the Apple ecosystem, so no video calling capability for meeeeeeeeeee.

          • @wellzi: Ah, thanks. Probably not for me then - I'm usually on my phone instead!

          • @wellzi: Why? Just install Google Duo on your iPhone. That's what I did.

          • @wellzi: So it's barebones room specific tablet in your use case? I guess thats a pretty good price for a tablet

          • @wellzi: Well I hope You're right because GG ebay aren't returning any of my messages of my trying to cancel the order(Bastards) and I just got the email to say it's been dispatched.

When iPads came out, I thought it was a crazy iDea, then I bought one….I hope this is the same.

        • I actually have a JBL link view, but I use it to show photos from my linked google photos account, ie: digital photo frame. Works well for me, as my phone automatically backs up to Google photos. Also shows weather, upcoming calendar events.
          Also to play Spotify.
