Braun Series 9 Wet/Dry Electric Shaver $349 (Was $649) Delivered @ Shaver Shop

100

Down from $649 (which is an obscene RRP), the series 9 now seems more reasonably attainable. There is a chrome version for $399, but I can't tell whether there is any difference other than the colour. I'm happy to miss on the chrome and save $50. Don't forget shopback (7%), which would bring this down to $324.55!).

I think the only functional difference between this black version and the silver version, which I have, is that the silver version has a countdown timer in the display for the last nine minutes of shave time. That feature doesn't seem particularly useful, but appears to be the only difference aside from the colour.

The silver one also has a countdown timer when the battery starts getting low indicating how many minutes you have left.

  • Reviews are mixed hence I didn't go ahead.

The man has one of these and he quite likes it. The ability to plug it in and let it clean itself is great but we will probably investigate how to create our own cleaning cartridges, they are quite expensive but it is more the waste of plastic that annoys us. Looking for a decent priced fluid, if someone has an idea as we still have a spare empty cartridge. It seems to remove the beard, doesn't leave a rash and doesn't cut him. Not sure what else you need in a shaver. I think the shaver blades are a tad on the expensive side and some of the reviews mention the cleaning station can be fragile, he's had no issues with his.

not much improvement from Series 7, and Series 7 can be had for $200 on sales. Bought mine a year ago, worth every dollar spent.
Don't bother with these self-cleaning stations, the cleaning cartridges cost a lot, and this shaver can be immersed in water so you can clean it yourself.

    • the model without the cleaning station can be had for $299 (https://www.shavershop.com.au/braun/series-9-wet%2Fdry-elect…)

    • YMMV; the man prefers the cleaning station and the Series 9. His series 7 broke the side burns trimmer bit.

    • yeah i've had the series 7 for over 5 years now and its been great. just need to find what sort of DIY solution can be used to refill the cleaning cartridges myself

There are Youtube videos that tell you how to do it, but I've yet to see the premade replacement cleaning fluids in Australia. We can, probably, make our own up, but would be nice to just get something.

        • yeah exactly, when I was searching a few years ago I found a site in the US that sells some concentrated version but the postage was something ridiculous so I gave up on the search

  • Got it, love it!!

  • Philips got a new one with Qi wireless charging… About double the price.. I've been eyeing this one but since reviews are mix, I'm gonna wait for the Phillips deals

    • +1

That Philips looks nice, but Qi for a shaver seems like such a gimmick, especially when you sacrifice the cleaning station for it. Having owned the 9000 Series Philips, well still do, they aren't fun to clean as you need to basically pull apart the head and take out the individual blades to get a decent manual clean.

  • I feel like most people saying "love it" are white dudes with invisible blonde beards
I got this and returned it after a week. It would barely do a trim rather than a shave. And of course it falsely advertises wet shaving. It's water proof and you can wash it, but you cant use a shaving cream with it.
I ended up going with the top of the range Panasonic which was $100 cheaper at the time and while it also struggles on the neck area, it does a far better job on the face and actually supports wet shaving.
(to be fair all electric shavers struggle on the neck)

PS. if you really dislike Panasonic and want a Braun then go with the series 5 that has the cleaning station (must have the cleaning station) it's quite literally the same thing for half the price. Before getting the Panasonic I tried that too and since it had the same performance of series 9 on the cheap i was gonna keep it, except it broke.

PSS. you shouldn't even be thinking about rotary shavers, it's a crime against your skin

    • Thanks for the suggestions! It's funny, I posted this because I was shopping around for a shaver and Braun is always the starting point. But after everything I've read, I think I'll wait for a good price on the Panasonic Arc 5, it looks like it's got the goods!

Completely agree with the rotary point haha

I don't know where this idea that it can't be used for a proper wet shave with foam came from, but I've come across it before. It absolutely can be used with foam and it says so right on the product page and the manual mentions the need to remove all foam residue before putting the shaver in the cleaning station. I have the silver version and have used it with foam a number of times.

I find that these shavers tend to give a much better shave if you haven't shaved for a day or two and I'm also considering trying the Panasonic at some point.

    • You got your money back after using a shaver for a week? Where did you buy it from?

      • +1

        shavershop….

they always have 60 day moneyback guarantee going on
        better confirm before buying tho,
i wouldn't buy an expensive shaver without some sort of moneyback promotion, it's a big investment

    • The man has a beard like a wire brush and he has no trouble getting a clean shave. I’m getting images of “I hear they shaved a gorilla” if you had trouble with it :) he doesn’t need the shaving cream with it so I can’t comment on that.

  • I had a series 8, but find the 9 is every so slightly better. The cleaning stations are the biggest scam ever. U can use a brush to wipe off the hair dust. Or wash under the tap. Shaver shop will also try flog U off spray cans too. Don't be fooled.

I received the silver one for my birthday and I think it's brilliant. I've only ever had sub $200 Philips shavers in the past and found them to be really fiddly to use, they wouldn't shave underneath my nostrils properly and cleaning them was a real chore.

It shaves remarkably close, I have sensitive skin and sometimes break out in psoriasis and I found the rotary blades on the Philips would destroy my skin. The foil on the Braun is in a completely different league. I've used it daily now for almost a month and I actually look forwards to shaving now.

I found out why you need to clean any shaving foam or two completely from the shaver first.
Some days I need to use hydrocortisone cream on my face and it creates a bit of build up. I also moisturise, and the Shaver had been essentially stripping it off my face, the cleaning cartridge ended up getting filled with gunk.
The cleaning function also lubricates and deodorises the unit. One thing i could never remove 100% was the smell from my rotary shavers, but this makes them smell all lemony and fresh.
Down the track I'll have a go of the refill sachets, keen to try different scents!

Anyways, as you can tell by my rant I really love this shaver! Lol it's not worth the RRP, but I believe it's worth the sale price.
