  • waste of money 4GB ram wont run anything.

      excel opens just fine.

        But wont calculate :)

    • 4gb of Ram is actually ok for streaming videos, Microsoft office suite and web browsing. If that’s all some one will use it for than this machine will be fine. Only thing I would do is chuck an ssd then it’s going to be a pretty decent and compact little machine.

Yes an optiplex will have better specs etc but for something small and neat such as the Mac mini for $560 you’ll get a well performing device with an ssd and in a nice discrete package . ( for those who care about that. ) I actually think it’s a decent grab.

  • I got this exact model for a few years now. Try to sell it on Overclockers for $350 but no one was interested.
You can't upgrade anything but the HDD. I didn't want to let it go for $300 so I kept it and connect it to my lounge room TV. I have it running Emby server so I can watch movies on my phone and tablets. Works well as a media server and browsing the internet in lounge room.

5400rpm HDD. That's gonna be a big oof from me dawg.
Also, it's a Mac. Have fun doing nothing.
Get a refurb optiplex + a nice screen and still have money to spare.

"Have fun doing nothing." Oh no, here I was thinking I was doing something all these years. So sad now I didn't get a refurb Windows machine.

It's slow, but with an external SSD it is fine.

  • I'd pay $200 max for this and replace the boot drive with an SSD, but even then it might be a waste of money because of the 4GB non-upgradeable RAM :|

Lol with $499 I can do a better small form factor PC.

  • With the specs being so dated I think Audio / Hi-Fi people can look at this as a Network Audio Player (with a few software / hardware mods).
I personally have never used Mac Mini in this way, but some say it is made well enough to be used as such for high-end audio (using USB out to DAC).
Price could also be cheaper. (Around $299-$349 sounds right)

    lol what a waste.

as if you would buy an apple.

The good thing about Apple computers is that they include a shift key. Yours seems to be lacking that feature.

      • Never knew this was an English class. Thanks

        • Sorry for being a jerk.

This is a very expensive brick.

    • So edgy. You must be the coolest.

I'd buy this in a second if I had the money

    • +12

maybe the reason you don't have money is because you buy useless things like this…. :P

Far better to build a cheap hackintosh: https://www.tonymacx86.com/
    Then at least it's upgradeable.

  • LOL 5 year old hardware still being sold as new.

    • Gotta love the Mac Pro which still sells for 6k, with their DDR3 ram and all.

  • I’ve got the 2013 model of these
Put 16 ram and 250gb in it

    Tried sellling it once
No ones interested, might just stick it on eBay for 400 or something

I just did a little experiment with mine. It has a small external SSD which is the boot disk. This machine has a known issue with the SSD as a boot disk but I have worked out how to make it work, by holding down the power key when booting it until the light on the SSD comes on. Mildly annoying, but I don't reboot often. I launched a dozen programs, one by one, and they all launched within 1-3 seconds. The internal hard disk would not do that. it was very slow. If you are going to buy this, bank on buying an external SSD to go with it. Mine if from a deal on here and I whacked it into an SSD enclosure from Amazon. It is now perfectly usable. A dozen open browser tabs with other programs running is not a problem.

TL;DR HD turns it into a slug. An external SSD turns it into not a slug.

2012 i7 would be a better buy - RAM and hard drive user upgradable.

  • Funny you should post this. PC Perspective were just ranting about how bad of a value proposition these things are on their last podcast.

  • I don't get who buys these things? This is an honest question what does this do that an android box can't?

    • +1

It has a full OS like windows called MacOS. Android is a minimal device OS for smart devices / TV’s etc.

  • +1

Build a hackintosh for <$600 that would spank this.

    i3 8100
    rx580
    16gb DDR4
    SSD

    • Do tell. PM me, please; I need a decent hobby and a hackintosh might be the thing.

Terrible specs for $500. Raspberry pi would run quicker than this junk. Apple crapple.

    • +1

Raspberry pi would run quicker than this

      Massive eye roll.

    • +2

Facepalm. No. It really would not.

    • Where can I buy Pi i7, 8GB RAM?

  • I was considering a Mac mini for some media consumption and to learn Macos.

However you can get some if the Intel Nucs for slightly more then this that are a similar side and user upgradable and run Hackintosh on those..

The main thing that puts me off this is no user upgradable ram, I do love the style and the price is very good.

  • Still waiting for the day that Mac OS installs, without voodoo, to an Intel PC….The Hackintosh videos are just ridiculously complicated and prone to disaster. :(

  • anyone has good advice on a mini PC worth buying?

    • Intel NUC, although they are ugly imo

      • Ugly? They're a little grey/silver box; you can even buy coloured tops if that's your thing.

  • This was a mad impulse purchase. But its Officeworks; buy now, return later.

I then researched this POS and discovered two important matters

    1. The RAM is actually soldered in and is IMPOSSIBLE to upgrade. Immediately, this is (apple) US built in obsolescence, dictionary style. Trash.
    2. The hard drive is at least 30 (THIRTY) steps away from replacement. Check out iFixit or similar. The disk drive is effectively impossible to replace by the average punter.

So: Thank you Officeworks for an effortless return. This Mac Mini is a piece of garbage.

I should add that I own a range of Intel NUC and Gigabyte Brix machines, delightful to "build" and endlessly upgrade. I heartily recommend the Intel NUC and Gigabyte machines.

    • I think the correct terminology is ‘planned obsolescence’ or ‘engineered obsolescence’.

      • This isn't an English language class.
