      Also factor in that the Japanese mobile phone / data system is weird. They've never had GSM, and the 3G data network is not easy to get access to.
      I looked at renting a SIM at the airport when I arrived (they don't have throw-away prepaid SIMs like we do), but they wouldn't include data.
      If you're planning on using mobile data in Japan, plan on paying for roaming… if you can figure out how to get on to their 3G data network. I'm glad I didn't get it working… I was hit hard enough just for voice roaming :-P

        And if you pay for data roaming, be aware that it can cost an absolute fortune. Last time I checked, Telstra charged $7 per megabyte. A bit of browsing and navigation can cost more than your air fare.

        • its .015 cents per Kb, which I believe is $15 per mb, with a $0.50 'data flagfall' each 'session'
          Yes, be very wary of this! It may be a good idea to research the area/s you might want to visit with this app, before you leave the country….

      • Softbank have rental sims / phones / pocket wi-fi devices.

        This for approx $20AUD / Day is pretty good if you absolutely must have data;

        Only issue I could see with that is the battery will die after 4 hours. I wonder if it would be possible to take the sim out and put in your own phone? Is there even a sim in the device?

        • Last ime I was in Japan I could only get rental phones… so not sure how easy it would be to get a sim, sim with data or a micro sim for ip4… they dont really like american products in japan…

  • Good Find, Thanks :)

  • hows this different to Google maps?

  • +1

    ya. its kinda useless. if your phone/ipad had internet, then just use google maps. theres no maps in this app.

    Google maps are ok if you can read Japanese, and google maps do not include the icons and 'tourist attractions' and resturants etc, which imo seems to be pretty much the whole idea of the app, and well worth checking out…
