Meh. Get a pressure cooker. Does more and makes better rice.

    Filipino.
    Eats rice with EVERY meal.
    Methods i've used:

Stovetop - cheapest/neatest option, no need for extra equipment. This is what I do most of the time. Great for small batches. Takes skill (of sorts)because pot has to be watched which can be a pain. tip: stir the rice a bit when the water starts boiling.

$15 kmart Rice cooker - cheap, easy to use (just turn it on!) does a fairly decent job. Often with unevenly cooked rice because of the thin pot, and uneven heat source. comes in different sizes, fairly light and can easily be moved around. tip: stir the rice a bit when the water starts boiling.

$150 Taiwanese rice cooker (indirect) - Does a much better job than the $15 one. Prefer this over the Japanese ones because they can make bigger batches although tend to be uneven towards the top. TAKES AGES to cook though. Good sized machines. Easy to move around. This is best product to price point.

$300-400 Japanese rice cookers (what we have here) - cooks very evenly, although TAKES AGES. Bigger machines, but makes only small amounts of rice. Not so easy to move around as well. Might need a dedicated space. TOO EXPENSIVE because although it is better than the $15, it's only marginally better if you take price as consideration.

$100-200 electric pressure cooker - Cooks fast enough. VERY EVEN rice. Turns off the heat after the timer so it never scorches the bottom. It's NOT JUST A RICE COOKER, so for small spaces (even though the machines are huge), they're great because they do a lot of things (like beans!) THIS is my favorite.

and just for the heck of it..

$10,000 - $40,000 commercial steam combi ovens (yes they cost THAT much). cooks rice through steam so they'll NEVER scorch. Can prepare up to 30kg (50kg cooked) at a time, all even, in trays, minimal fussing about. WIll also always finish at the expected time it's supposed to finish (different brands have different cook times but they're all around 35 minutes) this is my second fvorite.

    • I agree. Is there anything better in pressure cookers apart from Tefal Cook4me?

    • +2

Wow! Very informative post. We eat rice every day, pretty much, using the $15 cheaply. I had no idea there was such variety in rice cookers…

      give this user, OzB Gold!

  • Ok I've had the Tiger rice cooker for a good 10 years now, lugged it back all the way from Japan, I've only ever cooked rice in it because I can't read Japanese! Still going well but it's time to update because the huge converter box, as big as the rice cooker itself, is taking up valuable space on the bench top.

We eat rice 5 days a week, so I want a dedicated rice cooker.

Should I go for a non pressure, or a pressure rice cooker? Does the rice cook better in a pressure rice cooker, anyone has had experience with both?

I am a Chinese. I owned Tiger 10 cups rice cooker for 10 years(not IH). The joint is broken. Now I use Philip all in one cooker. I would say, a pressure cooker is far more better than non pressure cooker. It can cook all rice in the same stage, now just the heart of the bowl. If you look at the top model of Japanese brand cooker, they are all pressure cooker. So pressure cooker definitely better than just IH. But Don't buy Philips, maybe try Slow Fast pro. this has a good reputation.

        • I haven't tried that. But the design is bad. most of the function needs to be set in app. It's inconvenient.

          • @paddywide: Isn't it we can just use the butoom on the rice cooker, without an app?

        • I'm very interested in this one too.

      • What's wrong with the Philips?

        • Some times pressure doesn't go up to preset value. Sometimes it doesn't count down. sometime it doesn't build up pressure at all. Bad rating in product review.

  • For anyone looking for a 3 cup rice cooker, I highly recommend Tiger JAY-A55U. Perfect size for 4 people family.

      Where can one buy this?

WTF, I just paid $26 for a rice cooker at the good guys. It cooks rice.

      Bogan.

      • +1

Haha why? Because I didn’t spend $400 on something that literally boils water?

        • Because you don’t know any different.

        • +1

While at TGG did you check the prices at the coffee machines section, they literally boil water as well.

You’re like a 15 year old drinking his first VB and thinking it’s tops.

  • +2

I'm sure it's great but don't need more clutter in the kitchen. Stovetop pot seems to do the job for us.

    • +3

Im sure your pot rice is great but stove tops tend to clutter the kitchen. I just cook everything in the microwave

Question for the "it's just rice, you can get a $[X] rice cooker from [store Y] which works fine" commenters: if you don't care enough about rice to see the value in a high-end rice cooker, why not just move on, instead of recycling the same tired old comments?

When you see a deal for an $800 phone, do you also reflexively comment about how you've had a Moto G5 for the past two years which is doing great?

When you see a deal for a $400 stand mixer, do you also loudly declare how you can make cakes that are just as good with a wooden spoon and a mixing bowl from the Reject Shop?

When you see a deal for a $300 set of headphones, do you also feel the need to point to the $10 earbuds you got from JB Hi-Fi and say "sound is sound"?

      Touchy lol

    • Will need to link back to this comment in future rice cooker deals!

I place rice in the boot of my Honda Civic and drive around…open boot, cooked rice!

    • Went with the tiger after some more research

Bought the JKT-S10A, thanks for the heads up Pavlos. Made in Japan has been the decider for me over the Xiaomi and Zojirushi offerings.

  • -6

Wow,what a precious lot ! Hundreds for a rice cooker. This is Ozbargain right ? Move on. Oops my Kmart rice cooker just popped. Gonna enjoy my rice, with my chicken and salted fish on tofu. Get a life …

  • I'm still on the fence about purchasing one of these. We've never been able to obtain that crisp/firm, just bought from the Asian restaurant kind of rice. I hate gluggy/soggy rice so would gladly spring for something that can reproduce that!

Can any of the rice connoisseurs chime in?

Free rice cooker here - pot.

Boil water. Power off. Drop rice in. Lid. Done.

    • you must be using some instant magic rice.
