Just saw this in my daily Qantas emails.

THIS IS NOT POINTS + PAY, THIS IS CLASSIC AWARDS OR POINTS ONLY BOOKINGS.

Take 30% off the Qantas Points required for Economy Classic Flight Rewards on eligible Qantas, Jetstar and Jetstar Asia operated flights.

*30% discount will be automatically applied to the Qantas points required for Eligible Classic Flight Rewards Flights booked between 10am (AEDT) 13 June 2019 and 11:59pm (AEDT) 16 June 2019, for travel 23 July 2019 – 31 March 2020 on Qantas (QF) and Jetstar (JQ/3K).

Discount is on the points portion only, no discounts on taxes, fees and carrier charges.

Melbourne to Sydney will cost 5,600 points, down from 8,000 points.
Sydney to Hong Kong return will cost 39,200 points plus taxes and fees (saving 16,800 points) while Perth-London return will cost 77,000 points plus taxes and fees (saving 33,000 points).

To make these booking you need to select 'Classic Rewards' when making the booking, this is not for 'Points + Pay".

But it does say only JQ/QF/3K?

  • More to the point why is THIS happening ?

Yesterday taxes for 2 to Las Vegas was $462.50 now $673.46 (AUD) AND SAME # of points. LA a complete QF flight yesterday regular points and $462.50 NOW 30% off points $959.70 (AUD)

    • +1

Taxes and fees don't fluctuate on a daily basis. They are a fixed amount.

Are you sure you didn't put in 2 people today but 1 person yesterday?

959.70/2 = 479.85 (which is close to your figure of 462.50)

      • Very sure me and wife were reviewing together surprised by price in hindsight should have jumped on it

        • Taxes and fees for 2 adults from SYD to LAX and LAX to SYD on Qantas both ways should be: $900.48 (AUD)

        • We actually put in details a few times because of price

          • @JakDac: We can help you if you post screen shots of the flights, points costs, taxes and fees.

Remember that taxes and fee vary with the flight you take.

Eg taxes and fees will be different if you book a ticket on an American Airlines plane than if you book a ticket on a Qantas plane.

      • Called FF twice they told me prices can fluctuate anytime (as that was my query)

        • Taxes and fees do not fluctuate on classic flight awards.

Prices do fluctuate on cash fares and on points + pay fares.

    • Yep, exact same thing happened to me. My tax for 1 from Melbourne to LA -> Vegas -> LA -> Melbourne went from around 90000QFF + $370.11, now 83000QFF + $470. Flights from Australia to US both operated by Qantas as well, so no idea.

      • The sale does not apply to your trip.

        Read the T&Cs:

'If a Trip includes a Transfer (international - a flight within 24 hours) or a Transfer (domestic - same day) on a partner airline which is not Eligible, that Trip is not eligible for this offer. For example, if an itinerary included an Eligible Classic Flight Reward between Sydney and Los Angeles on Qantas with a Transfer flight to Miami on American Airline, this Trip would not be eligible to receive the discount. '

        • I get flights operated by those other than Qantas aren't included. If what you are saying is right, why do the points go down at all? And why would tax go up?

          • @johnno1987: When I do a search for Melbourne - Las Vegas, it shows 90,000 points for me.

Can you show me a screen shot where it is showing 83,000 points for you?

            • @vetopower: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/19935/70072/vegas.jpg

I was looking at 18th Oct, but its now booked out.

              • @johnno1987: It's cheaper because the discount will apply to the 1 November flight because that is all on Qantas. (You aren't going to Las Vegas to Melbourne in a single trip.)

Were you looking at the exact same set of flights before the sale? Because taxes change if you change flights (eg change from an American flight to an Alaskan flight) or if you add/remove a flight.

  • Something very weird going on… when I choose use points only, the points are 5x the normal?? Perth to Melbourne is like 80k instead of normal 18k??

    • +1

They have changed their search front end that used to include the words 'classic rewards' only. Now it looks like they are grouping classic rewards with full points for cash flights. So I'm guessing the flight is normally $800, hence $80k points.

P.S. Keep an eye out for codeshare flights (that should be excluded). Sometimes they get mixed up and come up as zero points!! Haven't seen one on this sale…..yet

      • This makes a a lot of sense. Thanks mate

how to then get the normal classic rewards?

Edit: found it in the right 2 columns. This website made me so confused!

        • If you select the 'Use points' rather than the 'Use money, points or both' option on the front page search field, you only get classic flight awards.

          • @vetopower: Not always. As barozgain pointed out above, they are either in the right 2 columns, or not at all. Guess they are hoping someone will not know the difference and book a full point flight when a classic reward isn't present.

            • @tunzafun001: Not if you select ‘use points’ on the front page. Then it shows no availability if there’s no classic awards.

Thanks OP. Got a SYD>MEL flight height of Spring Carnival. Those flights are worthwhile using Classic Rewards because they are never cheap.

    • Thanks for that! Think they'll do these regularly? Still $350~ in points + $167 taxes though (one way).

  • How the hell are you meant to book a Jetstar flight using this? They don't show up on the Qantas site, and if I use the Jetstar site I can only get the option of points + pay. 76,000 points for $500 worth of flights, yeah no thanks.

      Go to qantas.com

Search for your flights. Make sure to select 'Use points' on the search screen.

Choose the Jetstar flight. They will be down the bottom if there are both Qantas and Jetstar flights available for the same route.

      • Will give that a go, cheers

Here is what you will see if there is availability:

          • @vetopower: Try use the filter and clicked classic seats button

            • @Geoff897: I think the Qantas flights are often better value for the points difference as they include seat selection, checked bag, food and drinks.

          • @vetopower: Yep I see now, guess I wasn't scrolling far enough! Thanks

Definitely don't save much compared to a Qantas flight, it's less than 2k points difference (6.6 vs 8.4) and you lose all the benefits as mentioned above.

            • @fLaMePrO: I booked Qantas NZ flights and saved us the 30% ($700+ 92k Points priced at the standard 1.2c) Didnt like to idea of jetstar

  • anyone has experience with buying with Qantas point for below scenario.?

    Depart Brisbane
    Destination Taipei

to get the best use of the points, i would have to buy Return ticket for BRISBANE <-> HongKong. and then buy another seperate Return ticket for HOngKong <-> Taipei.

does anyone know if I need to go through immigration and enter HK and then go through immigration and leave HK (to fly to Taipei) since I am buying two returning tickets?
or I can get away with just waiting inside and do BNE->HK->TPE->HK->BNE even with two seperate return tickets?

lol @ OP having 1.4m points, good effort!

    • 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ how did u do it.

      • +1

Credit cards and spending money. Basically paying all families bills all the time.

        • You must have a big spending family.

If you earn, on average, 1QFF per dollar spent and even if you spend $20,000 per month ($240,000 per year), it would take 70 months (almost 6 years) to earn 1.4mil QFF.

          • @vetopower: Sign up bonuses I think he means.

            $2k - 6k in 3 months = 40k - 100k+ points.

Can do them all once a year typically, can easily get 400-500k points/year with 25-35k spend.

      • Likely one of the following:

        a) Put a lot of spending through QFF-earning credit cards by, for example, owning your own business (and pay business expenses/ATO with credit card).

        b) By churning through a lot of sign-up bonuses over an extended period of time.

        c) Fly a lot of business/first class flights.
