Missed out on the $142 deal but I don't mind an extra $3 for this one over the backorder. Thanks for the find.

Can you put these in an enclosure to create a portable SSD?

    • Yes

    • +1

Yes but I've had all sorts of issues with enclosures and SSDs not working.

Better to buy a portable SSD such as Samsung T5.

      • What kind of problems? I've never had any issues and I use the el-cheapo enclosures from ebay.

        • I had a cheap clear plastic enclosure I got off ebay (UASP, USB3.0) for $8 delivered and it worked fine for a while connected to my xbox one but eventually it bit the dust from being always on so my xbox could download updates to the SSD while asleep. Putting any load on it (ie trying to load a game) would cause it to disconnect.

I put it in an identical enclosure and it worked fine again.

I would assume it was related to the power IC on the enclosure being of poor quality.

I think it comes down to cheap enclosures are fine when used as an actual portable drive enclosure (ie on for short periods of time) but extended use you should buy a higher quality one.

Regardless, always make sure you get one that supports UASP or you wont be able to hit the full transfer speeds the drive is capable of.

      • Never had an issue with cheapies. I've had one enclosure die but it was a few years old.

      • +1

SAME.. never had any issues either.. but i make sure to get good QTY USB 3.0 cases that cost $11

  • This would be good for a PS4 right?

    • From memory because the SATA version of the non-Pro PS4 is so old you don't get a lot of improvement over a hard drive. For the Pro definitely. If you only want space than speed it's fine for the non-Pro too.

Quick search turns up a Tom's Hardware review where they get a couple of seconds improvement on 20+ second load times. Up to you if that's worth the cost over a 1TB HDD (or 2 at this price, and still cheaper).

      https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ps4-hard-drive-upgrade,…

      • Currently have another brand SSD in a PS4 but it's only 240gb. Wasn't sure about dimensions (2.5") so I thought I'd check compatibility on that front.

      • Not sure about PS4/pro but the Xbox One uses a SATA II port for the internal drive whereas the USB3.0 Controller uses UASP, so storing games an external drive that is capable of faster-than-SATAII (3.5" HDD or SSD for example) will net you slightly better load times, varying from game to game. Im not sure about the One X internal drive(despite having one) but yeah, games load faster. Usually find myself loading in to lobbies long before my friend who uses the internal drive.

        • I can confirm it's faster. Don't have actual times but I've bought an SSD for the Xbox upstairs due to load times on division 1 and 2

    • I got an SSD for my PS4 Pro and the speed improvements % wasn't a huge amount, but for me it took the edge off loading times. In some games I hated dying / reloading as it took too long, but the SSD fixed that.

  • Can this be installed into one of the recently mentioned Thinkpad notebooks?

    • +1

No, they have a M.2 SSD which is smaller in size and has different connections.

    • +1

If you're talking about the recent E495/E595 Thinkpad notebooks on TA's post, then yes. If you have a look at the upgradability for those notebooks, they have a free 2.5" HDD slot available. You'll just need some basic technical knowhow on opening the back case off, and you can easily fit this SSD into it for more space.

  • Picked one up for old iMac upgrade.

  • It comes up as $50 postage for me?

    • +2

Express delivery is $50, Standard post is free.

      • I only get two options
        1. Express post
        2. Click and collect - I select a store near me and then it says it will cost $50 to express post it to the click and collect store I chose. Essentially making the option pointless.

It appears the only option available is via express post.

        • +1

I got all options at the checkout, standard delivery, express delivery or click and collect.

          • @caileach: Hmmm no idea why I am not given that option. May be because I'm located in the NT.
Oh well, i'll wait for the next deal.

  • Will this be a straight swap on a PC tower (minus the copy of files). Motherboard is msi with sata connection. Would I need a spacer etc?
    Thanks OB team :)

    • If you have a 3.5" HD/SSD in your tower, you would need a bracket like this.

      https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ctssdbrkt35

      • Thanks !

      • +3

Or just double-sided tape it to somewhere stable. No moving parts.

    • Your case might have screw holes behind the motherboard or on the floor that you can mount it to. But otherwise the two sided tape trick works or your can get a bracket if you really want.

I love how cheap SSDs are becoming

    • +1

Yep, but I am still holding out for 1TB for $100. Surely that will be possible in 1-2 years.

      • +1

yes, and and uber will have flying taxis so you won’t be stuck on our congested roads, but in the meantime if you need storage, go with the best market rate.

      • Should be by the end of this year. I read articles of over supply of DDR memory by Samsung and other companies in Taiwan. So the prices will definitely go down soon

        • So, the Coles jingle.

          • @Munki: One punch jingle

            • @vid_ghost: HERO!

God I love the opening songs to both seasons.

              • @Munki: :) Not seen S02 yet.. i'm lazy and would rather wait for dubbed lol

                • @vid_ghost: Quality isn't on par with S1, but still good!

                  • @Munki: Yep.. new animation studio, writers and director. ( same music people though lol)
Too much time past before green lighting the new season so the peeps who made the masterpiece that is the first season moved on to other things. Oh well :) It is what it is and another anime i will enjoy. 38 years old and I've watched allot over my lifetime.
For some reason this show reminds me of a mix between Golden boy and Bleach.

                    • @vid_ghost: Madhouse has made so many gems…From what I've read, they had another project to tackle and would've been able to work on it, but would mean delaying S2 for another year apparently…Oh well, I actually enjoy the dialogue and story more anyway, so don't mind the animation too much.

It's a parody of the typical tripe of manga like Bleach, and some of the comedic nature of Golden Boy, so maybe that's why?

    • I been waiting for a deal on 1-2 TB HDD but they don't seem to ever go on offer.

  • For those who purchased the HP desktop -
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462663
This would be a welcome addition for storage.
Not sure if will fit straight in or adaptor plate required.

  • this or the Samsung one??

    • 860 EVO is the competitor and costs $180 with the same discount code.

You can compare specs from them both here.

      https://www.anandtech.com/show/12347/samsung-announces-860-p…

      https://www.anandtech.com/show/12165/the-crucial-mx500-1tb-s…

The Samsung 860 QVO is trash and the Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860EVO are the much better options

      • Yeh im comparing with the 860 EVO one, is it worth the $30 extra?? This will be an OS drive for me

        • +1

If you want to use their Data migration software to clone your old OS drive to this one before changing over then the Samsung SSD is nice that it comes with software .. I've used it and it works well..

But you can always download MiniTool ShadowMaker Free Edition and use that.. i think it works even better then Samsung Data migration

Both are super easy to use.

The samsung is a little faster 5-10% and has almost twice that lifespan read/writes at 360 VS 600 on the EVO but apart from that both drives are good.

Cant go wrong with either one..
Always make sure to backup files as either can die.. nothing is 100% reliable.
That being said.. the only SSD that has ever died on me has been one in a super hot gaming laptop.. Heat killed it. All the 250gb SSD's in our air conditioned office have been working fine for years.

  • Can anyone post some portable HDD deals? thanks in advance

  • Can anyone comment if this would fit in the PC's that techfast are selling on here? Specifically a Ryzen 5 2600 model. Sorry I haven't had a desktop in many years and never upgraded anything so a bit lost!

    • +1

It would fit, but might have to replace their 128gb drive if it doesnt have a spare SATA port. SSDs are tiny

      • Thanks Vinodra, I think there's a spare port so should be all good. Now just to decide whether to get this or get a 3gb 7200rpm HDD for about $50 less. Hmmm…

        • +1

I reccomend getting this to replace the 128gb SSD than a large HDD later down the line for extra storage. If you are playing games you basically need them on an SSD if you want short load times.
