Was just about to post this. Bought 2.
    Great deal!

  • What are the main features this has over a regular smoke alarm?

    • +1

For me the handiest feature is the head ups alert.
If I’m cooking up some crispy bacon in the kitchen, I will get a warning via the speaker and on my phone to say the alarm will go off soon.
I can then silence that alarm from my phone.

    • -3

For this price it should have a hidden camera for your air bnb.

    • One feature that's handy if you have more than 1, alarms are synchronised. If one goes off, they all go off. Handy if you have one in a granny flat or another place you might not be in earshot of.

    • It is also a CO alarm.

Just be aware if you buy any Nest gear to integrate with your smart home/automation systems, google recently announced they are removing 3rd party access to the Nest API's, meaning it'll only work with google products in the future.

    • +1

Yes i regret purchasing mine, how they can sell a product like a smoke detector and then remove features and degrade the product is beyond me. Talk about bait and switch.

    • Stupid question, what's a use case of having integration with Google assistant/smart home? Not being smart, just not sure if I'd need it.

    • Does this mean that the smoke alarm will not work if I don't have Google Home?

      • No, they work standalone.

And the point @pjm is making is that Nest are removing access to their current set of developer APIs. Which you mean you may not be able to integrate the Nest Protect into 3rd party platforms - Google's will still work.

    • Future lack of interoperability makes this deal less of a bargain, I would understand if their was a competitive product range from Google but they don't and their current automation capabilities are limited.

      • What third party automation are you after from a smoke alarm?

        • Turn inside lights on, turn aircon off, unlock the smart locks, sound external siren, flash external smart bulbs, open roller door, message neighbour, set motion cameras to record, turn tv/stereo off.

There's so much you can do, or rather could do until Google killed it all off.

          • @LowRange: Thanks hadn't thought about that - lights on and automatically opening smart locks and the roller door is a great idea. I hope there will be another way to still achieve that once they kill off Nest.

Actually, reading up about it, it looks like Google had released an updated plan to retiring the Nest APIs, where your existing Nest integrations will continue to work past the kill date, and Google will even continue to release security updates for Nest, though new Nest features will only go into their Google APIs.

Your existing devices and integrations will continue working with your Nest Account, however you won’t have access to new features that will be available with a Google Account.
Nest accounts will be moved to a maintenance mode and receive only security updates, but at the very least, the change now won't sever the smart home connections you've come to rely on.

But for new connections after the shutoff date, it's expected for third parties to integrate with Google Assistant APIs instead.

We’ll stop accepting new WWN connections on August 31, 2019. Once your WWN functionality is available on the WWGA platform you can migrate with minimal disruption from a Nest Account to a Google Account.

Third parties seem to be relieved with the change in stance by Google to let users decide when to switch from Nest to Google integration.

"We are happy to see that Google seems to understand how detrimental it would be for existing Nest users to have their integrations stop working," said Chris Carney, CEO and co-founder of Abode, maker of one of our favorite smart home security systems. "Abode will continue to work with Google as [its] plans for Works With Google Assistant evolve and we hope that we're able to collectively offer the same level of functionality and compatibility that made Nest such a successful brand and important partner over the last several years."

            https://blog.google/products/google-nest/updates-works-with-…

So we had all better set up our Nest third party connections before the cutoff date (end of Aug), at least until the third parties migrate from Nest APIs to Google Assistant APIs.

  • Thanks OP, noticed that recent fire department recommendation is one for each bedroom plus hallways/living space so bought 5.

  • Damm just purchased 2 from officeworks 2 days ago, for $149.00 each.. Anyone know if they do the see it cheaper within 30 days they will refund the difference/

    • They wont even price match Ebay coupon sales, so getting them to refund you the difference due to another store having an Ebay coupon is optimistic.

    • Did you buy it with a credit card that has price guarantee? Submit a claim and you'll get the difference.

    • Just return the officeworks ones. If you opened them, order these and return them to Officeworks. Don't understand the problem.

  • Damn it, when I go through to pay and hit the button I get the following error
Something went wrong. Please try to check out again.

Tried credit card directly and through paypal

    • In my experience that means the store doesn’t have enough stock.
If you’re click and collecting maybe try a lower quantity or different store.
Last time I had that error I had to get 1 from 2 seperate stores.

      • Says in stock…first error was that the limit was 3 only for the ones I wanted…but now trying to get another 2 and back to an error again haha….but without the error codes this time

        • Now its gone through….ebay support said there are some issues with the coupon and paying.

  • Would JB price match this?

    • +1

Probably not as it’s a coupon but then again I’ve had JB price match a Good Guys Commercial price on a surround sound set up so YMMV.

  • Battery model lists Bluetooth connectivity. Nest site does not mention it.
Still going for battery model as it is easier to relocate. Does not update s/w as frequently as wired (to preserve batteries -6).

  • +1

Anyone know if these are totally compliant to use in Qld (owner occupied, not a new house).

    • +1

My guess is it would fail on the 10 year non-replaceable battery clause.

    • Looked into it recently, and at least the battery units are definitely NOT compliant. I ended up with some boring uglier ones which are.

  • Interested to see if there is enough interest in the Xiaomi Honeywell Smoke Alarm for a deal / group buy? Similar features, typically $22USD over the last few years. I don't believe they are certified here, so you may still need a standard smoke alarm depending on legislation.
Hopefully they release a newer model now that Google is restricting the use of Nest APIs.

    • +1

Don't think the Xiaomi detects CO, which is a big deal IMO. It also doesn't appear to have false alarm checking (high humidity).

I purchased a couple of these but now thinking I should try out other options that aren't crippled by Google.

      • That's definitely a deal breaker for me as well. I'd misread the item description, as they are often advertised as smoke + gas detectors, but it seems the gas detector is a separate unit. Hopefully Xiaomi step up and provide an upgraded product.
