I've purchased this before and had to return it because it did not support 4K HDR signals when switching between my Apple TV 4K and Xbox One X. I tried it with power and without and the result was always the signal dropping in and out. You may have more luck with a different TV, cables and devices but I'm yet to find a 4K splitter that actually does a consistent job.

I’ve had the same issue with the signal dropping in and out as well, and I’m not running 4K. Just a PS4 and a switch to a FHD TV.
      Also the remote is useless.
More trouble than it is worth to send it back unfortunately.

    • Thanks! Was contemplating even just to try out but no HDR bad signal drop outs, no thanks. And yeah, Amazon returns can be a pain

    • HDMI 1.4 doesn't support HDR that's why you're having issues trying to put through a HDR signal through this HDMI 1.4 switch. And these manufacturers have the nerve to put 4K on it and yet it only supports that resolution at 30hz.

A dead giveaway that it's a HDMI 1.4 switch is when the specification states 4K @ 30hz. That's the HDMI 1.4 spec. The chipset just doesn't have the bandwidth for HDR.

Go get an actual HDMI 2.0 switch and you'll have no issues with HDR. But you'll be paying a bit more for one of those but it's well worth it to get not only HDR but 60hz 4K support.

  • +2

I would think that any passive HDMI switch will support 4K. So the Kogan one for $12, or the 4 port one for $15 would be equivalent. They don’t process the signal in any way.

However, as with any of these cheapie products dealing with high bit rates and varying cable lengths - YMMV. As an example, my 10m HDMI cable is on the fine edge of acceptable signal degradation, so depending the position of the moon and the daily blood sacrifices I may or may not get signal flickering…

    • No you are wrong as the HDMI switch chipset has to support HDMI 2.0 to work with 4K @ 60hz and HDR if you aren't content with not having HDR and 60hz 4K from this crappy HDMI 1.4 switch. I mean this one only supports 4K @ 30hz and no HDR so it's useless for 4K gaming. This one only supports HDMI 1.4 and hence the 4K at 30hz limitation. I recently went and bought a $70 4K HDMI 2.0 switch but it supports 4K @ 60hz.

It would be like thinking you could use 10mbit Ethernet switch and plug a Gigabit CAT6 cable into it and think you could get Gigabit speed from it. Sure the cable may support Gigabit but it doesn't work that way as the switch chipset has to have support for the Gigabit protocol. There's no difference from that and a HDMI switch. It's all just data bandwidth.

So it may be a HDMI 1.4 switch but it doesn't properly support the full 4K features such as 60hz and HDR. 30hz is only ok for movies. You need a HDMI 2.0 switch.

I have something similar but the remote is terrible.

  • Any idea of a good HDMI switch? Doesnt have to be 4k. i need one for my set up as too many devices.

    • +4

I got one for about $10 from ebay a few years back. It works great and autoswitches when you turn on the device. It doesn't work for the PS4 though, so I just left that on a dedicated HDMI input and use the switch on the other input to run 3 devices.

It similar to one of these.

      • Thank jv for the recommendation. I like that auto switching feature. Noted about ps4.

Bit tired of the Amazon Circlejerk - don't take it personally OP, but there's definitely some stuff that people will upvote to oblivion just because it's on Amazon.

What appers to be functionally identical product on eBay - wouldn't be suprised if spat out of the same factory ~10% less Australian stock: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ultra-HD-4K-2K-HDMI-Switcher-3x1…

Can get it for even less if you're willing to wait from China.

Honestly I just prefer Amazon for the top-tier customer service, warranty and hassle-free returns. Plus, 2-day free Prime shipping. What’s not to love?

2-day free Prime shipping. What’s not to love?

          Also, Amazon search is rubbish.

At least on eBay I can search for an item, enter my postcode, and select price + postage for sorting. I don't have to wade through mounds of listings that aren't in Australia, won't ship to Australia, and also have postage costs upfront and not buried in each listing.

          • +1

@Switchblade88: I agree, the search system on Amazon is pretty rubbish. I typically tick the prime box and then search from low-high, tends to filter out the junk and only show me Aussie stock with 2-day shipping. All depends on what I’m buying though.

        • -4

Well, you don’t have to pay to get free shipping. You only pay for quicker shipping, like with any other online retailer.

      • +1

I'm on and off a prime member - the predictable shipping is good.

Given this is only fulfilled by Amazon, support afaik will still run through the vendor as a first point of call.

Irrespective, this is ozbargain not FeelsBargain and a 10pct mark-up is a 10pct mark up.

      That's not the same one.

The one you linked to at ebay has better reviews.

Please find one with worse reviews so we can compare apples with apples.

    • +1

I bought one of these ages ago (same vendor) and it works fine.

      I don't have anything that's 4K though…

      • OMG nothing 4K OMG
Thanks for the link, though. I am not sure I have 5 things with HDMI but I’m getting there.
Oh, and it’s cheaper than the OP.

        • +1

Main desktop + old desktop + some other goddamn desktop + newish laptop + old laptop + newish tablet + old tablet.

          It all adds up.

I've got an old KVM switch, and the HDMI switch has taken over the V part of all that. I've also got a splitter in the mix as i've got two monitors going.

          All very convenient really.

          OMG nothing 4K OMG

Well i say that to make clear i haven't tested it with anything 4K.

Cancelled my order due to the bad feedback here.

  • Another day, another HDMI switch?

We used to have ill priced Bluetooth car adapters every other day; seems like ill priced HDMI switch is the new thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a HDMI Splitter - 1 in & 2 out of the same signal?

What I would like to do is run from one hdmi from my Nvidia Shield to a hdmi splitter and output to:

    1. My amp which sounds great but is not capable of 4k
    2. My 4K projector which is amazeballs

I really dont want to buy another amp to do this and the only real requirement i have is to output the original picture quality and cater for 7.2 sound.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Get an optical splitter.

This one is $19 with code 3485OFLL and available on Prime.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B017B6WFP8

It claims to support 4K (all it needs to do is pass through the same signal so makes sense) but I have no 4K devices.
The optical output works fine in my experience.

      • Thanks @coxymla

The one linked is limited to 5.1 but I feel you have put me on the right track to great sound & picture for the least possible price :)

        • +1

In theory the audio stream should also be passed through onto optical untouched, whether that be 5.1 or 6.2 or anything else.
But I can understand wanting to find one that specifically mentioned what you have.

      • I’m in the same boat.

Would there be any issues using a HDMI switch (like the few suggested so far) before the splitter. If it’s all just pass through, any likelihood of degradation? I guess more cables is the worse part.

  • does anyone know of a decent hdmi switch that actually does 4K HDR multiple ins and 1 out?

Thanks stupid Sony TV for only having one HDR input…

  • +2

Peoples. If you want 4K @ 60hz and HDR you need to buy a HDMI 2.0 switch.

This one here in this deal only supports HDMI 1.4. 30hz 4K with no HDR support limitation. So this is basically almost useless for modern 4K Televisions.
