Wow. This is an awesome price for the camera.

  • This or the gopro black 7 for a similar price.

Mainly used for video. For a birthday party that will be indoors and at night.

    Anyone experienced with either?

    • +6

Neither are ideal but this will be far better indoors.

    • -4

For video I recommend go pro 7.
I have an Olympus ep5 with 12 40 2.8 lens which is much much better than Sony rx100m3.
But I still use my iPhone and go pro for videos.
iPhone and go pro both support 4k/60 video and have really good image stabilisation.

    • +3

This would be far better than a gopro for that particular need. Low light is the weakest aspect for a gopro.

Do you have other main uses for it? Gopro is an action and waterproof camera, obviously, so it excels in that realm of videography.

Oh and the RX100 with it's F1.8 would actually be pretty similar to a micro four thirds camera with a F2.8 lens at night, contrary to the comment above.

    • +1

The GoPro will have better stabilisation. The Sony will have less noise. The Sony could in theory be mounted on a gimbal.

There are some comparison videos for SONY RX100 V, Go PRO 7/6, and iPhone.

Just in mind, RX100 V used stacked sensor, have better focus and support 4k.

      In terms of video.

If you don't care 4k, focus, HDR, and willing to hold a gimbal and willing to spend time on color tuning, then Sony RX100M3 would be a good choice.

    • What about this compared to the m100 which is cheaper. For video, indoor and in poor light?

  • Would like to know how it compares with the camera on the mobile phones?

    • +10

Depends on the phone and your preferences.

In a vacuum, this will produce better images and video due to having a brighter and more versatile lens and larger sensor, and a high bitrate (50 mbps)for 1080p video. The main drawback compared to a phone is that it is quite old and the HDR engine cannot compare with current phones, so if you like the super bright and vivid looks for your photos straight out of camera, then use phones. It is possible to get the same level of dynamic range from post processing with the RX100 III, but that requires work :D. This also does not do 4k video if that is important to you. Current smart phone pictures also rely on a lot of post processing but done automatically.

      • Another thing(and I'm not a photography guru so might be the case with all cameras) is that it takes pictures with barrel distortion aka. the image looks bloated. You can remove it in photoshop or lightroom but it's annoying and this is why I only use the camera for videos rather than pictures.

        • +1

I got DxO for free on ozbargain. It removes the distortion automatically when the image is loaded.

    • +6

      Chalk and cheese.

The phones would have better image processing, using hdr features to make up for a small sensor and optics.
The bigger sensor and higher quality lens in this would create higher quality photos without processing, much better portrait bokeh and low light shots.

The rx100 series is a middle ground between standard point and shoot Cameras and interchangeable lens aps-c cameras.
A really good intro product for people who want to take decent shots without the hassle of changing lenses etc.

Many people with pro level camera owenrs have these as a spare pocket camera for convenience.

      • Good way of comparing it really; RX100M3 is a compact for people that would normally shoot on "pro level" gear. Stunning little device but many people that would previously be in the compact market would likely get just as much out of the Pixel 2 camera for the same price.

Agree…my 2 bob is that you will generally always be able too squeeze better images out of larger sensors with better glass in front.

Where phones excel is in processing the image. Lots of smarts to get the vivid pop out of such a small sensor, which camera manufacturers have lagged somewhat behind in. There's barely a point buying a compact camera these days with a similar/slightly larger sensor than a smart phone. Take the same picture with equivalent focal length on a phone and this Sony RX though, and blow it up - there will be no contest.

Taking pictures for Instagram? Don't bother…just stick with your phone.

This class of camera though…well…I'd bet that if you're willing to do your own processing, you will always get a better image out of a Sony RX than you can from a phone or a compact point-and-shoot (you may call this a compact point-and-shoot, but really, it's in another class). Similar models from other brands would be the Canon G7X and the Panasonic LX100 (the Panny is the interesting one, as it actually uses a micro four-thirds sensor with the image circle only partially covering it).

Great price on this RX100 M3 though.

    • +1

This if you're going to do the post processing. Phones nowadays come with heavy processing for insta ready photos.

    • TLDR

It is almost as good as a bulky SLR camera, but small enough to put in your pocket.

There are also newer versions available but the differences are minor.

    • i think no phone can beat Sony RX series. sharpness and detail better on RX

  • Do you get the free battery with the Amazon one?

    • +2

He mentioned Amazon do not offer free battery

      • ah indeed he did. I think going for a refurb one on the Sony ebay page with 20% coupon is the best bet.

        • I had a look and couldn't see this model in the Sony page, only the mark 2.

  • +1

Well this is a lot more popular than my post earlier in the week lol.

    • +1

That $4.60 must have made the difference :-)

    • Devo

      • Don’t be, man. It’s not a big deal.

        • It got front page tho

    • You could have posted this deal. We talked about this deal a couple days back.

      • My comment had lol at the end and I up voted this deal. It’s all good.

        • +1

          I know. Just teasing.

  • harvey norman and bargain? good go

  • Amazon sold out by the looks? :(

  • +1

For current owners, how much lag is there between pressing shutter, and showing a preview of the image?

    • +1

The image preview is pretty much instant

  • +1

    Pretty good price, thanks!

Been checking out this camera and the Panasonic LX10 on ebay, both sell + or - $400 used FWIW.

I really feel the LX10 is the better camera, at least for me, particularly with the F1.4 aperture at 24mm equiv.

Not sure I can justify near $600 for this… Decisions…

  • +3

Sad to say my Mark2 is already gathering dust in drawer after just one Europe trip. Seriously just can't bring myself to use dedicated camera these days, phone jist so much easier..

    • Sell it!

      • I should, but then I'm also on the fence of "just in case need better camera" for a particular function, though I have no single idea when I would need better camera for. Just night image alone, S10 already way better than my Mk2

    • Yes true, phone replaced all my cameras but my MK2 is a daily I use it for macro. It blows away any phone image sensor if you want detail.

  • Amex Offer? I checked my 2 Amex cards & can't see an offer. Any more info about that? Love stacking bargains ;) Thx OP.

I have one already, but it's my dive camera, & it's always good to have 2 second camera in case my underwater housing floods.

    • This was for people who had already saved the 'Spend $350, get $50 back' Amex offer - the subscription limit is already maxed

  • These things have a tiny sensor hey? Even smaller than micro four thirds?

    • Sensor is almost same size as micro for thirds, but this camera fits in your pocket.

      • Yeah I'd go with X100S or X100T over this, APS-C sensor and fits in your pocket ;)

Only downside is doesn't have a zoom lens. You're not gonna get a zoom that fits in your pocket on an APS-C sensor though.

  • What would be the closest canon equivalent?

    • Canon G7x Mark 2 has slightly longer zoom range but most reviews rate the Sony better overall.

  • -1

nearly 600 bucks and no raw? Anybody compared this to the slightly dearer a5000?

    • +1

It does have RAW! And this camera will fit in your pocket, A5000 will not.

      • I'm thinking this vs Fuji X100T. The main advantage of the sony would be the zoom I guess… But X100T has APS-C sensor…

        • Very different price brackets on those, but I think the X100T would be better for an enthusiast if you're willing to pay the extra.

          • @glengood: Good point, I was thinking about X100T second hand price.

Just realised my above reply was to the wrong comment…

  • Amazon out of stock now. I wonder if JB would price match?

  • Thanks, I bit the bullet and bought it!

Great deal with spare battery, and my only reservation was the Panasonic LX10 was tempting, but it doesn't seem to go on sale much.

Had $200 voucher through my credit card to use as well (storing that one for a few years!)

Can't wait to test it out :)

  • i bought this for $500 2nd hand on OCAU forums some 3 years ago now. been on multiple holidays and has served me incredibly well. i can concur on low light performance, the 4k videos are also great but severely drains battery life, that's why they made the mk4. Phone cameras don't hold a candle.

  • Any thoughts on this versus Canon G7X ii?

  • This is a great little camera and takes great photos. Bought it for $623 with bonus battery about 6mths ago.

I used to carry a Nikon in a camera slingbag with multiple lenses, now I take this and the Nikon with just a zoom lens fitted to it. All fits in the same Nikon bag and no more having to stuff around to change lenses.

  • I can't believe I missed this deal, and I had the AMEX offer too!
