I think this is a good price of a 2nd gen i7 notebook.
Price is $799 but you can further reduce the price to $788 not choosing Dell oncall help when you customize.

I believe you can also get $50 cash back if you use AMEX to bring the price down to $738 (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45194)

  • Wow amazing deal for an i7-2nd gen

  • +1

Awesome price. Only $732.84 if you opt-out of Dell oncall help and use Moneybackco.

    • more info im slightly confused lol please excuse my ignorance

      • dell on call help is an additional feature you can add on, moneybackco is a website which gets you rebates on some of your purchases

      • +23

When customising a Dell PC choose "No, thanks" in the Essential help screen. You won't receive call support however you will save $11.00 and thus make the total cost $788.00. Do not choose this option if you will require help setting up your PC.

Sign up to MoneyBackCo (search Google) which earns you cashback from purchases you make at a variety of on-line shops. This service costs $10 per year however they take their fee from the cashback you earn. Dell happen to give back 7% on orders meaning this particular notebook would cost $732.84 ($788.00 x 93%).

Step 1. Clear entire browser's cache & history
        Step 2. Close your browser
Step 3. Open browser and keep only 1 tab open
Step 4. Visit MoneyBackCo website and sign in
Step 5. Search for and click Dell on the MoneyBackCo website (they may be on front page)
Step 6. Scroll down to halfway on the page and click "Click here to visit this merchant and earn moneyback…"
Step 7. A window will pop-up so click "Click here to visit this merchant and earn moneyback…" again
Step 8. Another tab will open with the Dell website and your browser will have a total of 2 open tabs
Step 9. Shop for your Dell PC and complete the transaction
Step 10. After the Dell PC order has been processed/paid you may sign out of MoneyBackCo as it should take care of the rest.

I hope you can follow this guide easily and a lot of OzBargainers here will vouch for MoneyBackCo.

        • Do you know how long does it actually take to display the Dell transaction on the MBC account?

        • +1

Took me a day for the MBC to reflect my apple store purchase, if that's any help.

        • just did this, easy guide ! managed to find the 11 bucks off but added 2 bucks for the windows 7 backup. also used amex (signed up and got the 50 cashback) as well as moneybackco.

im not sure how moneybackco works. i get the 50 cash back from amex i know that is simple to deal with but how does MBC work? ive alrdy made the payment and added bank details to my MBC account i assume the cashback gets deposited in there?

        • @ .ady

MoneyBackCo will first take their annual fee of $10 and periodically they will deposit the cashbacks you make into your bank account. They first have to track your orders to make sure they were successful.

Do not rely on the money. It will come but not any time soon.

        • @ Guybrush57

you say "dont reply on the money and it wont come any time soon" the money will come though right? im not expecting it to come back straight away im expecting at least 5 days?

whats the approximate wait from your experience?

        • @ .ady

You will definitely receive the cashback however you will not receive it for months to come.

        • Guybrush57,

Thanks very much for the step by step guide

      • +1

3 months. Also its 7% back of price ex gst not the total price

  • is shipping included?

    • Yes. I believe shipping is included on all Dell products.

  • Tempted. Very good specs.

    BUT

Very heavy, bad keyboard, mediocre screen. Still a good deal if your laptop sits mostly on your desk.

    • +1

I have an inspiron. Its actually not that bad, keyboard is decent, touch pad annoying, screen okay, normal weight for a 15". I love the little features (keyboard shortcuts) and its specs for price is unbeatable. I spent ages researching and its BY FAR the cheapest.

However one thing to note, dell has the worse customer service ever. My monitor broke within 3 weeks of purchase and they sent out a technician who was so inexperienced, he damaged more of my laptop whilst fixing. Complications with technician, it ended up taking 1.5weeks to fix because of delays with the technician. The call centre is horrible, i spoke to 4 operators about my issue (requesting compensation) before one of them asked their manager. They took my details and never called back. While i was on hold another 3 operators picked up and i was redirected from customer care to technical help. No compensation.

Beware: Quad core i7 + no Nvidia Optimus graphics switching + 6 cell battery = terrible battery life.

Still, it'd make a pretty powerful mobile workstation or as a desktop alternative.

    • I thought all the current generation mobile Nvidia graphics had Optimus graphics switching…

And whats this about in the product description?

"When you need less power, your laptop automatically switches to an integrated card — delivering more performance on a single battery charge."

  • I'd rather an i5 with a better screen

    • +2

you get what you pay for…. $7xx for a 2nd gen i7 notebook, what do you expect ?

  • May I use Moneybackco & Amex cash back together? Maybe I'm a bit greedy…

    • No reason why you couldn't? :)

      • Plus you are earning points on your amex too, which depending on who you go with could be worth about 1.7% of the transaction. Altitude platinum (westpac) is worth this much.

    • Isn't it too late to register for the amex cash back?

  • +2

have to say this deal is amazing…. no retail shop can beat this price.

  • +1

Man, I have to say. We're in an amazing era right about now. Imagine what it's going to be like 10 years from now. Like 16 cores at 3Ghz boosted to 5Ghz with 8GB of quad-core discrete graphics for $1,500.

Mind you, I would love to see what kind of cooling mechanism exists to handle that kind of hardware in a laptop though.

    • +6

Make that 2/3 years. In 10 years it will be like 100 cores.

      • +1

No, it'll be an implant in the back of your eyeballs.

        • +14

I missed the "eye" when I first read your post thinking WTF

    • +2

yeah 2 years u'll get 16 cores (prob coming out next year for desktop/servers) but on the gpu side.. unless you mean 4 gpus.. coz gpus already have stacks of cores (or pixel pipelines/pipes/streams etc as they are called in gpu land) soo much that what used take super computers to produced can be done on a hand ful of gpus provided the problem is coded in a gpgpu langueage.. so long ramble short.. we are way past multicore gpus :)

8gb gfx haha like to see those textures…

oh well times are good indead :)

    • +1

dont need to cool diamonds ;)

Cheap deal for $682.84 using all the discount options - MBC and AMEX. Cheers OP.
