  • Great price, shame I just bought the same one from ALDI for $79 :(

    • return it…

      • +5

I think ALDI has a 60 day no questions asked returns policy.

  • +2

Whilst this is a superseded unit, it is a worthwhile deal for the 5Gb of NextG data alone. Normally Telstra charge $50 for 3Gb data with 30 day expiry. Might get one just for the SIM to put into my 3G enabled laptop.

    • -3

you need to recharge to get the full 5gb

      • Dang! Still, $70 for 5Gb on 90 day expiry isn't that bad.

      • +2

Just got one of these the other day for my mum and we didn't need to recharge to get the 5GB. 1GB was added within an hour of activation and the remaining 4GB was added within 24-48 hours.

        • oh okay

        • Confirmed. A SIM is included in the pack. Once activated the 5Gb is credited immediately.

    • You can just buy the $2 prepaid SIM from any Telstra shop and get it activated for pre-paid broadband. Works fine in my HP5102.

  • Terms & Conditions

Network unlocking fee applies. Limit 1 per customer (except SA). No trade sales. While stocks last (availability of colours may vary at participating outlets). The included data expires after 90 days. The included data can take up to 48 hours to be applied to the service. The included data cannot be used while roaming overseas. Our FairPlay policy applies. Charge in one minute blocks. Further terms and conditions apply. See www.telstra.com.au for details.

  • wow great deal, i dont really need one but for that price plus three months expiry, definitely getting it

  • +1

Would appreciate if people could comment if they've had success pricematching at Officeworks?

    • I've had great experience. My local Officeworks is excellent, but their price must be more expensive. They watch the catalogues to and then drop their price to equal so no pricematch can be made. Usually I have to go there soon after a price is released, especially with major retailers like Harvey's.

    • if you show them the Harvey Norman price before they drop the price, they should be able to price match and take 5% off :) get in quick though!

    • +1

price matching work. Here is proof ==> http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/imglrt.jpg/ ($49.50)

Technically, I should be entitled to an extra 5% discount but I did not want to wait around for an extra ~ $2.50 discount and the lady who helped me was good. Can some one confirm if the 5% discount is automatically computed and inputted by the computer or requires a manual input?

      • The 5% is a simple button push, it doesn't take any waiting around :)
(There is a button on the register that automatically gives the 5% off "price guarantee")

        • do u know if coles staff discount works with it too? i always get mixed responses 4 this one

  • Just looked at Telstra and found you can add a MicroSD card - up to 32GB. Thought that was interesting so updated the post.

  • $99 on that link???

  • Wow i just bought a voda one pocket wifi

  • Anybody know the unlock fee?

    • 100 Dollars. Damm. That is too much. I dont know, if they have the policy like vodafone or other to unlock for free after 6 months.

  • Good price.

Can it be unlocked? I don't want to pay Telstra prices for a recharge.

    • +1

Unlocking fee - If you want to use your Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband device on another network, you will need to pay a Network Unlocking Fee of $100. See: http://www.telstra.com.au/help/summary-pages/prepaid/mobile-… near bottom of page.

      • +1

Thanks. and there is this post…

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1693870

      • Prior to purchasing this device, I spoke to Telstra about whether it needs unlocking to insert/use a Telstra post-paid SIM after the 3 month period expires.
I was told that so long as it was a Telstra SIm of any sort, no unlocking is req'd.
Once I had the device, I tried a post-paid SIM and what do you know?? DOESN'T WORK!!

    • i brought it at a telstra store for $99 2 months back and had it unlock on the spot free.
so it might be worth while to ask about it in store (telstra shop of cos)

      • That'd be good. I'm looking to get it unlocked so I can use it overseas. Anyone know if that will work alright?

  • -3

$50 for 5GB DATA expired in 90 days plus a Wifi modem, marked. Not close yet.

  • any one know of any other ways of unlocking?

  • +2

Alternatively, get the optus my tab, with 3GB of data in 3 months for $99. Oh and You get a pretty shmick tab too!

    • i agree my tab is a better deal PLUS android 2.2 allows hotspot functionality!
so pretty much does better value in all

    • +1

Depending on where you live you might find that the Optus connection is very slow and almost unsuable.
I got a mytab and activated the sim a couple of days ago and Optus wireless here is virtually dead.
Better to pay a few more bucks for wireless bb you can use (telstra) than something that may be useless (optus).
BTW.. The mytab is brilliant for the money.

  • anyone has got one at home? just wondering if someone wants to try using the dccrap to unlock it,even the mf30 is not listed under the models, i wish i have one,i can give it a shot.

  • Can someone tell me whether the 90 days expiry period is from the date of activation or purchase date. I'll be travelling in late August/Sep and wanna buy it for then.

    • Its from activation, they have no way of tracking your purchase unless its from Telstra.

      • jeez thanks

  • Hmmm not a bad price
Was considering the Vodafone one over the Virgin last week due to it being a new modem but now this Telstra one has come up with an extra 2GB over the Vodafone hmmm

What to do hmmm only need a max of 2GB in a month or so

    • Telstra one has more download, longer time to use the included data, and NextG is more reliable.

Vodafone one.. the little display on the wifi hotspot is more informative and can be unlocked for free (you just need a PC). It can also be used via USB - like the traditional USB dongle.

It depends on where you plan to use this. If it is for holidays (within Australia), then Telstra one is definetely the one to go for.

      • Yeah going to Melb in a month so might go for it

Any idea if this can be unlocked free?

I know it cost to unlock the Vodafone but there are free options

  • Would anyone know if I need ID to purchase this? Like being 18+?

    • +1

Just proof of identity ID, student card is usually fine.

And a tip for anyone buying credit, if you're recharging over $100 use the EzyRecharge Paypal deal

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45265

      • is it possible to recharge this telstra mobile internet with a 12gb ipad recharge so I can get 12gb instead of 10gb?

  • Great price, but most Harvey Norman stores probably won't have many of these in stock. Last time I went to the Preston store hoping to get one of these with their 20% off promotion, there was none in stock.

Tempted to go there and try to get one… but a bit worried that they don't have any in stock.

    • +1

      call up before going

  • Does anyone know a Next G Post-paid sim with data will work in this prepaid wifi device?

    • yes it will work

    • +1

Cant see why it wouldn't, I bought a prepaid Wildfire and put my post paid sim straight in, worked fine. As long as its Tel$tra, it should work.

  • +1

Bought one 6 months ago for $99. Great unit with excellent Telstra reception. Had Virgin(optus) and Vodafone before than and I wasn't happy with reception.

  • +2

How is credit expiry even legal?

    • If you recharge before expiry date the remaining credit is added to the recharge with the new expiry date

      • Not with this 5GB in lusive credit. It is counted as bonus credit and has 3 months only. If you top up before it is used then it disappears from your account.

  • Do you have to register your details when buying this? I don't want to give HArvey Norman or Telstra mine…

    • depends on the store but by law they are required to

    • If you don't wanna give your details to HN then go to Officeworks and get a price match which at the same time you should be getting a further 5% off

But they too might want your details but either way when you activate it Telstra will want your details

  • Great Deal
Can I connect a PC via a cable to this modem (ie my pc doesn't have a wireless card)

    • i dont think you can. get the usb version, it's cheaper anyways

      • Most wireless modems have USB connections anyway, else how else would it recharge?

        • This is correct and if itis like the Hawawei MiFis the device is able to be used as a USB modem.

Brings back memories of the bar of soap modems a few years ago.

      • +1

Guys… while the Huawei one can act as a USB modem. I think Telstra ZTE MF30 (this particular wifi hotspot) cannot. The USB port is limited to charging only.

The ZTE web site states this is not a tethered modem. The elite version, MF60 probably supports USB tethering.

This is a bargain even without it.

  • Went to Knox HN. Didn't look like they had any, but staff always seem too busy to bother helping. Anyway, went to local OW and did the price match and additional 5% off. So got 2. Deceided not to be gready and left 1 for someone else.

  • IPHONE 4 OWNERS:
I was tempted to get one of these.. until I realised my iPhone 4 does the same thing (personal hotspot).. so my iPhone now serves my latop, ipad, ipod touch etc for interweb wherever I am.

Not saying this may not still be useful for an iphone 4 user also.. but I now wish I hadnt paid extra for a 3G iPad as I am never without my phone.. so my 3G modem and the 3G feature on my ipad are now redundant (along with their data plans).

    • +5

Except that this will quite quickly drain the battery of your iPhone.

    • +1

Not only it drains your iPhone 4 battery faster, iPhone 4 (16GB one) is $800+ outright. This thing is ~$50 with 5GB data for 3 months. Besides, the wifi hotspot feature is not exclusive to iPhone 4s, Android phones have this features for a long time.

Also, if you want to download large apps (bigger than 20MB) on your iPhone 4, you can use this wifi hotspot to trick iTunes to let you download it.

    • Be careful on that one if you're on a plan
Mate found out that doing so is not included as part of his plan so he would have to fork out $$ for every kb he uses

      • Fair comment that the personal hotspot feature does drain the iPhone battery a bit faster - but not so fast that Ive noticed any difference - and it probably still lasts longer (with screen off) than this modem (4 hours).

Of course you cannot compare the $800 buy outright price of a new iPhone against this $50 device - if you already have a phone and just want a wireless hotspot then this deal is great value - hence why I wrote the comment specifically for IPHONE4 OWNERS. Good point about Android offering this for ages.

Re data charges - I wouldnt think the phone provider would be able to tell the difference as to what was used by the phone itself, or someone using the phone as a modem.. same for wired tethering ?

Ive been using this with Telstra for a few months and have not noticed any extra charges.

        • not great if you have an iphone 4 on vodafail network, can barely get any signals not to mention 3G connections

  • do i need to activate the sim card before using it? My laptop is connected to it but I still cant use the internet! can someone help me pls?

    • yes you need to activate the sim card. then insert it into the modem.

  • HN online has this deal now. I'm just gonna walk into OW and show them the webpage on my phone. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256973966123/telstra…

    • Beat me too it! ;o) Have updated the post. Glad some people have found this useful. Happy shopping all!

    • Just went to OW in Tuggeranong and they price matched based on the HN website.

  • typical HN,catalogue out but no stock.heading to OW to get one.

  • picked up in on in Vic. There shelf price was 99 and the staff had no idea about the deal. I showed him the picture and he checked online and came back to say it is a online deal and then marked down the price on the box to 49.50

  • just picked one up from officeworks in maroochydore, staff had no idea about HN $49 price. They priced matched and 5% discount got it for $47.00 great deal 5gb 3 months Thanks

    • You're welcome :o) Please don't forget to vote.

  • Got one today from Officeworks Townsville (last one on the shelf) - $47.02 after the 5% pricematch.

Went over to the Telstra Shop (Castletown) and asked about unlocking and they were completely unhelpful, directing me to the prepaid phone number for Telstra, saying they couldn't provide any codes in store. Decided to try my luck at another Telstra store (Aitkenvale this time) and had the unlock code within moments of asking for it. The guy serving me had no idea about unlocking mobile wifi devices, but thankfully decided to "give it a shot" — much more helpful than the other store.

According to the guy that served me, there's no unlocking fee for these MF30s so all you have to do is ask for the code from Telstra. He scanned my IMEI into his computer and he had the code right there - so yes, they can definitely provide the code in store.

  • Bought one from Harvey Normal North Ryde. They had quite a few in stock, and it scanned at the correct price.

  • Picked up the last 3 in OW Mt Gravatt. They had none one shelves but asked helpful assistant in there and he rummaged through and found 3 in stock drawers. $141.

  • Picked up from Liverpool Store. The staff told me, they dont have any left in the stock. I told them , I called up and confirmed and guess what, he came with one. A*%$^&& hole. That was the word, I thought.

I think, they are clearing, as Elite one have come, which has a screen on it to display the range, battery etc.

Anyhow, does anyone know, if we can still unlock for free, like few people did after buying from Telstra store?

  • Picked mine up from ow artarmon. None left

  • Seems this device can plug via USB to a PC for "charging only" and if you only have a desktop computer, you will need a wifi adapter to connect to the internet. Comments on Telstra website say it's "not a tethered device".
As I read it, I assume this means that if the only computer you have is a desktop PC, you cannot just plug it into the PC and surf?
The specs say it has 4 hrs charge, which is handy for a laptop on the go, but could you USB to PC 24/7 to keep it running, then just wifi? Shame as not cycling a battery from fully charged to fully flat destroys a battery.
Is this purely a pre-paid locked device without unlocking, or could you use Telstra post-paid SIM after the 3 months of data expires?

    • Won't be a problem, at worst they may give you a different sim card for post paid.

  • Does anyone know if the credit can be added to your card at a later date? eg if I buy tomorrow, can I get the credit added in a month's time, so it will expire in 120 days from now?

    • The credit expiry doesn't begin until you call Telstra on 1258887 and register the card and sim, so simply buy it and register when you want to.

      • is there any limit to when I need to register the card/sim by? wondering if I can stock this up for a rainy day (eg when i go on holidays around the country later this year). cheers!

        • +1

My box has an expiry date of 19DEC2013 printed on the label with the SIM and IMEI details on it. It might mean something but then again it might not.

  • What speed is this thing? 7, 14, 21 or 42?

  • Picked one up at OW Doncaster. i left at 10am

  • +4

    no bargain
you could get 23 ladders with that amount of money :)

  • Just picked up one from Officeworks Elizabeth St Melbourne. Scanned at $49.50 in store. Seems like OW has updated their price, should be the same nation wide?

FYI officeworks website still showing as $99.00 (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Net…)

    • +1
