  • I bought a Macbook Air for 1970$ 15 days ago. It is unopened - do you think I get the difference back? Or should I just refund it as its a 30 day policy and buy it again?

    • +12

      I’d switch it yeah.

    • +1

      Yes

    • +4

Refund and rebuy to get the slightly better display (true tone) and updated keyboard (latest revision). Not a big step up but may as well if you can.

      • Those reasons are very big reasons if you ask me. Combined with the price drop too.
Although be tempting to get this MBP instead of an MBA with quad core chip.

Edit: looking at benchmarks this machine is a better option with the 256GB SSD then the base model with 128GB. Faster write speeds (read is phenomenal regardless).

        • So size of HDD has an impact on performance?

          • @Bellpop: If you look at the specifications, you'll find that the size of the SSDs often affect their performance, with larger SSDs being faster.

    • +1

Double the core count on the new MPB 2019 is really worth it.

MB Air 2019 does have true tone display. Keyboard is the same gen except physical Esc and function keys over Touchbar (personally, I prefer physical keys, but even so, 2X the performance is far more important).

    • +3

If it is sealed there shouldn't be a problem exchanging it ex JB guy of 5 years here.

      • Thanks all, appreciate it.

        • +1

Hehe, got a refund, bought macbook air 256gb 2019 and also got 135$ in-store credit as it was on sale. WIN

          • +1

@edmobile8: You potentially got the old model Macbook Pro if your Macbook Air was $1970 and you got $135 in store credit when exchanging. The new model 256GB is on sale for $2069.10

      • any chance jb hi-fi still honours the deal if i'm a few days late and go into store? didn't have enough money until now unfortunately.

        • Usually yes just say you saw them have 10% off but couldn't make it in, if they don't budge go to walk out the store and they will just discount it

  • +2

Good price, sad I purchased mine recently and ended up getting it custom with some extra memory from apple which cost over $3000, much better just grabbing this, MacBooks are so optimised anyway they barely need over 8gb for most people.

    • The CPU is a nice one from intel (this year's model).

Most people don't need 8GB on a Macbook Pro. However, for work, 16GB RAM MBP provided by work isn't quite enough for me (ran out of memory a few times, had to close some apps). Some colleagues are lucky enough to get ones with 32GB RAM.

Really wish Apple would allow people to upgrade memory, rather than solder the RAM on the board… but that's wishful thinking…

      • +2

I can almost forgive the RAM, but I can't forgive the soilderd SSD which means anything that stops your machine booting looses your data.

        • That’s why you’d take backups of important data stored anyway.

Regardless of what machine you have, there is a risk of losing your data, backups are important in all scenarios

          • +3

@sghetti: Fair enough, clearly I have an invalid point then. All drives should wipe or become unreadable on desktops/ laptops on a hardware failure. Because we all use 100% fail safe back processes and pay for offsite cloud storage, and its fast and easy for all users and adds no burden of time or cost to recover and restore that data, software and licensing and reconfigure a machine. Don't know what I was thinking raising the issue really.

            • @Elijha: I know what you mean. Back in the day when I used towers, it was so easy to pull a 3.5in drive when the system failed, chuck it in another tower or caddy and pull the data.

  • any Giftcard we can buy to stack discount?

    • +3

Suncorp benefits for JB gift cards. Deliver d instantly.

      • +1

I can vouch for this method. I purchased a MBP 15 (i9 cpu/16gb ram/512gb ssd variant) few weeks ago. No limit on how many gift cards can be redeemed at the store, however if it’s over $500 they do take a photocopy of your ID to prevent gift card fraud etc.

Also note there’s a purchase of max $1000 worth of gift cards via Suncorp rewards every 24 hours (no way to bypass this also when I checked with customer support).

    • +1

RACQ eGift Cards Portal offers 4% off I think. Can buy multiples of $500 and afaik you are allowed 5 GCs online in one transaction. Also instant GC delivery.

      • +1

Can vouch for this method. Once bought $2K worth on my phone while sitting in the store. Arrived within minutes.

    • Yes you can.

The highest discount I found is 5%

Anyone knew if there's a new design Macbook Pro/Air on the way? Or new systems in general? Apple's offerings seem stale as of late, tbh. Love their products in general, but I think they've really dropped off since Steve Jobs….dropped off.

    • +1

Well they are redesigning the keyboard. Them butterfly keys have been problematic.

    • These were only released a couple of days ago along with updated Air. Should be a 16” Pro later in the year.

    • +1

MacBook Pro CPUs were refreshed about 2 months ago so they're current. The non touch bar 13-inch models have just been replaced with all touch bar models now. MacBook Air received a refresh not long ago and recently the 'old' MacBook Air model (1.8GHz) is also discontinued via the website and Apple stores but still available through distributors until at least early 2020. iMacs received a recent CPU refresh too so there's probably not anything big coming for Macs this year. (Mac Pro is coming but it's obviously not for normal humans).

However certainly new iPhones coming and it looks like a new or updated iPad… damned if I know what they're doing there but it could be the iPad 6th gen refresh that didn't happen earlier in the year. iPad already has 5 different form factors, they better not add another!

  • +2

    10% off.

  • +2

    Wish these had 16gb RAM

    • It's an option.

    • -4

Agree. My current 2013 MacBook Pro 13-inch comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. 6 years later these specs are still the same. Shameful :(

  • +3

You had me slightly concerned, OP. Apparently, Apple has released a cheaper version of the touchbar MBP, with a slower processor, graphics and less USB-C ports from what I can tell. I think you should clarify that this is the 1.4GHz version, not the 2.4GHz one which sells at an RRP of $2699.

    • +1

It has hyperthreading with a boosted clock speed of 3.9GHz (off the top of my head). Competes very strongly on single threads, despite its low clock speed, but it really shines when pushed. Check out the benchmarks.

      • You, sir, seem to be knowledgeable - does „when they’re pushed” implies fans going mad loud? I once bought MBP 15”, around 2013 with the fastest CPU possible, around $3000 back then, from what i remember. Whenever I played or did something more demanding, it was as loud as the range hood in my kitchen and people around me were concerned.

And that was a big surprise, my previous pre-unibody C2D MBP was never loud.

        • +1

MacBooks these days tend to prioritise being quiet. They appear to use custom undervolts on the CPU’s to keep them cooler, thus requiring less airflow.

They can see some pretty big throttling when fans don’t kick in, but it’s a big balancing act with the slim form factor and high end CPU’s.

  • +3

Hmmm might match @ OW given they are $2227… should work out to $1965.
I have the late 2016 model and always envied this 'touchbar' situation

  • new macbook air is tempting …..if they have just released a new model with the revised butterfly keyboard, would be at least another year until they bring out a new model.

  • Is this still the butterfly keyboard?

    • yup!

    • +1

Yes but new iteration which although too early to tell, hasn't shown problems.

  • -6

I’m not gonna buy a new MacBook until Apple releases one with their own designed processor and they drop Intel. I’ve heard that’ll possibly happen next year.

    • +5

      ok

      • Wanna be friends? We can talk about our computer purchases together.

    • chinese companies are looking at ARM for data centres loads as it unschackles them from intel and lots of data centre loads are open source unless you are a wintel shop.

moving mac from intel would limit ability to run windows workloads on a mac, exclude from Office , and require lots of mac apps to be recoded for little gain. and to run legacy intel code as emulation would be power hungry or in slow. Mac used to be IBM cpu, apple moved to intel and except for cost haven’t looked back.

if you don’t want intel, apple uses other chips in iphones and ipads if you are happy with the software base.

  • +2

    DDR3? 1.4GHz base clock?

Apple, why are you like this

    • +1

Dont go by numbers alone. Apple is underselling its T2 chip which offloads a lot of work off the intel CPU.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUTnLr8jBqg&t=262s

    • the truth about memory

ddr3 is LOW POWER, ddr4 notebook isnt and the actual speed throughput is about the same and its SSD mem speed and trasfer speeds you notice in use. its also cheaper for apple and DDR4 is going to be replaced with DDR5 over the next year and it will be the sort of speed boost and lower power usage…

So dont fret, id complain more about the fact its 8gb! 16/32 256/512 ram/storage is a bigger deal in fact Id argue with SSD price drops 512gb should be standard and 1tb the bigger brother

  • +1

not with its stupid keyboard, just wait next gen

  • Which one has better value for money, air or pro?

    • +1

MacBookAir if you're not doing anything that is CPU or GPU heavy, as the MBP has slightly better CPU (4 cores vs 2 cores) and a better GPU.

BUUT if you're using the laptop on the go, the MacBookAir has a better battery life, so unless you need the slightly better processing power, then the air is better value for you.

      • Thanks. For macbook air, worth the extra $ to get 2019 instead of 2018 model?

        • No, I mean if the difference is 100 bucks then yeah, I wouldn’t pay more than that for a tiny tiny improvement of the screen

        • also mpb has better display brightness.

Macbook air is $300 cheaper though.
Didn't they reduce price for new 2019 one? i would grab that over 2018 model tbh as it has true tone display unlike 2018.

          • @h1de: I nearly bought a 2018 MBA on sale two weeks ago, 10% off at $1649.
The 2019 model with a superior display and improved keyboard RRP is $1599. So 10% off would be about $1460. That makes a difference.

      • This doesn't even have a GPU

    • -2

      Anything non-Apple

  • Great price but I hate the touch bar.

    • +1

It seems like only the non-pro-IT users enjoy (or rather tolerate) the touchbar.

Which clearly indicates what kind of pros Apple is targeting. Correct me if I’m wrong - not pros really.

      • I think the Touch Bar would be a better tool if it was more universal. At present some macs have it and some don’t. Consequently it isnt worth the bother incorporating its features for software developers. No standalone keyboard with Touch Bar for instance. With windows drivers. A pity as it could have been interesting.

This sort of failure to properly execute is becoming all too common in the last few years, not at all like the old Apple.

  • +2

For anyone on the fence about whether this is powerful enough. Apparently it is :)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUTnLr8jBqg&t=262s

  • Anyone know if 8gb is sufficient predominantly running docker and ms products?

    • I'd always vote for 16GB when you're trying to run multiple things like that

  • So who has been tried office works price mat h less 5% for new MacBook air ?

  • +1

imo this seems like one of the best hardware refreshes from Apple in recent years.

I'm probably going to wait until they completely ditch the butterfly keyboards, but this is the sort of price/performance that I'm interested in in a laptop, especially as a complement to a fast desktop PC.

  • Just ordered one of these bad boys in store. Note that most JB stores in QLD won't have stock until next week

  • +1

Office works had the 2019 128gb air out the back …but not online for cc ..did 5% less than JB, so $1452.65 …..JB also had stock out back …..seems people have new stock, pushing old model, as I guess limited disay space .., but able to find once in store.

  • Still using that crap keyboard, what a joke. They already added 2019 model into their keyboard repair program, that tells you everything

  • +1

Ordered the base model 128GB to replace the base model 2017 MBP. I was worried about the 128GB drive not being enough back in 2017 - but I still have 58GB free so in retrospect it was a good idea and I'm confident it'll be the same in 2 years. Based on early reviews the processor will be a significant upgrade.

I saw this comment at the bottom of the order though: Arrives on or before 20 Aug 2019. Is that the real ETA?

    • How to live with 128gb…

Stick with the apple apps like Safari
Dont install garargerband and sounds effects
Hardly use office, well use google docs
Also use google drive to offload your docs
128gb isnt not a good idea for garargeband as mentioned but also iMovie

Whats 128gb good for, well web surfing the internet, youtube and watching videos you DL

keep DL videos off on external HD (cloud storage isnt a good idea for larger files like video)

AVOID antivirus apps, you dont need them and keep down apps in the background on boot too

  • Have a 2017 MBP 15", how much faster is this new 13"?

    • +1

not fast enough to part with money for if you have a 2017 MBP, unless you want 13” size. the entry level macbook 13” only has 2 usb c ports, and the 4 port macbook is over $2000.
i just upgraded to the new air because my old one the battery has lost a lot of its gusto and wasn’t retina display.
very happy with my $1450 macbook air 2019 …..only 2 cores vs macbook 4 core i haven’t noticed.

  • If you're travelling in the next 60 days and bundle this with those 10% GCs, it'll come down to 1,674.09.

Thanks for this! Got Officeworks to price match and beat by 5%.

    https://i.imgur.com/e4YtI1W.jpg

    • Did they have it in stock or are you now waiting for delivery?

      • The Officeworks I went to had stock.

  • This is back on at JB expiring tomorrow. I did a price match at officeworks and they are ordering in. Next day delivery. No stock in stores in Melbourne but over 100 in the warehouse.
