did they fix the widevine issue?

this phone is pretty good value except I hate the notch
    and also no NFC, b28.

    How is the camera quality?

    • Yes and no.

Fixed it in latest firmware (woddya know, you can OTA an update for Widevine L1) but last I checked, not all content providers recognised it and supported it (i.e. Amazon Prime supports it but Netflix won't)

      https://www.reddit.com/r/PocoPhones/comments/bhkd7s/unfortun…

That being said, still a good phone. The decent processor and screen (and regular updates) have kept it feeling current longer than my other cheap Android devices. I'm legitimately surprised and impressed by the Pocophone and glad I bought it at launch.

Pocophone came 2nd in a blind camera test, beating apple and Samsung. You can take the results however you like but camera and picture processing look excellent.

      https://www.geeksdigest.com/blind-camera-test-2018-mkbhd/

      • Having said that MKBHD did say that because the photos were posted online to his followers via Twitter and Instagram AND that these two apps actually process the photos uploaded in a way that actually eliminates the details captured by the higher quality phone cameras.

It may have been a blind test but the social platform actually downgraded the higher quality photos.

If you are just into social sharing of your photos - PocoPhone is a good choice.

Been using the Pocophone for about 6 months now. If you
get rid of the xiaomi camera app and flahh the pixel camera onto this phone the camera is amazing. I've read on different sites that even though this phone uses great camera hardware, Xiaomi didn't want to optimize their software for this phone or else it would be a direct competitor to it's other phones.

Tldr; This phone has an amazing camera when you flash the Google pixel camera app in it.

      • do you have some comparison of same pic using google camera and xiaomi cam you can share?

      • Do you get ads on this phone? I have a Mi Note 3 and it starting getting ads unlocking etc a few months ago so I fear that if I get another Xiaomi the same thing will happen.

      • I have been using this phone for almost 8 months. In first month, the camera stopped working and did some research. Got bad news from my research and then decided to use other camera apps from play store. Was not impressed but had to live with it. Then decided to go back to Kogan where I got it. They asked me to send it back to repair. Got it repaired (motherboard faulty) and since then it is awesome. No issues and love the camera.

Camera is pretty decent with gcam. Possibly better than my oneplus 6. My girlfriend has the poco and it's pretty great all round considering the price.

  • +1

Great value for this phone. I ended up getting the pixel 3a for the security updates. Paid $563 at office works.

    • +12

How'd you get it for $563?

    • +1

      also wondering.

  • Do they give a tax invoice ?

    • Yep tax invoice came in the box :)

      • r they really the official XIAOMI store? how is the warranty policy?

i hate grey imports - u r pretty stuffed, should had any problem with the purchase… not to mention some r just dodge…

        • It is listed as an Official Marketplace here: https://www.mi-store.com.au/where-to-buy

The same site mentions a 1 year warranty which I assume applies, not sure why the ebay listing doesn't mention it.

  • i have this ama

I went with the Mi9 SE but for those unsure id suggest checking YouTube to make up your mind

  • Getting a bit long in the tooth now but still a great phone.

    • +1

It isn't if you have average use (no gaming). It's got last year's flagship CPU for under $400AU.

My wife's LG V30+ has an 835 and that it still blazing fast.

    • +1

      It's less than a year old…

  • +2

Bargain considering the Xiaomi A3 and Redmi Note 7P is about the same price

  • +1

If you end up buying this I recommend getting a screen protector of some sort. The glass gets scratched very easily. Used it for about a week without a protector and got some scratches in the corner.

  • +2

Had this phone for a few months now. Super impressed. I use gcam and nova launcher and its awesome. Battery life is amazing

  • +2

WHAT? No B28? Some people are going to get very angry.

  • Beware it has a intermittent hardware issue with the screen that affects some users (I'm one of them).

    • Can you give a bit more detail please

      • +2

Touch randomly goes unresponsive until you lock/unlock the screen. Of the 3 pocos in the family, only one has the issue badly. So you might be lucky.

This is a great phone for people wanting to get away from Google; LineageOS works perfectly (Camera, battery life, phone, IR face unlock needs nano gapps I think, double tap to wake and if you're a fan you can load the awesome Pixel camera).

Drawbacks are no NFC, the second SIM slot is also the MicroSD slot

    • Can you install gapps on this?

      • +1

        Yes all levels

edit: Unlocking the bootloader is a bit of a hassle but do-able, you need to create a Mi account and wait 72 hours or thereabouts to get the unlock permission, and you need to use their software. I think it's to stop mass reflashing of devices.

    • LineageOS works perfectly

      Hard to install?

      • +1

The process is straight forward but follow the instructions on their website. The basic process is to unlock the bootloader, change a setting in the phone (ADB), install some drivers for the phone, run a command to install a recovery, enter the recovery on the phone and install the new ROM (and GApps if you want the Play Store and other Google features), clear the cache/data partitions and you're done.

  • I see that there is no waterproof rating.
Can anyone who has this phone comment on this - im not planning on taking it swimming but the accidental rain / sink drop would be nice to be covered

    • Saw a test on YouTube where a guy dropped it in a jar of water and pulled it out about 10 seconds later and it was working fine

    • looking at JRE's teardown there's no waterproof lining anywhere on this phone

  • +5

Headphone jack needs to be listed as a feature now :/

  • +1

Don't be fooled by the price, installing the Gcam APK gives it an advantage over the new iphones in low light.. incredible value for money!

  • +1

owned this phone for 5 months.
best phone i have ever owned.
    so powerful, runs pubg amazingly.
cant wait for the pocofone f2 (any day now)

    • The new redmi is the pocophone apparently

      • Different line. Poco and Redmi are now branched off subbrands of Xiaomi now.

  • I am still happy with my Redmi 4 going strong, I see no need to upgrade. It even has a better camera and battery than this model. The only real benefit of upgrading would be having 6GB RAM instead of 4, but I got no issues with 4 so will keep using until the phone breaks down.

Made an account just to post this comment

Currently using this phone since April

Running Havoc OS with LKT in battery mode.

No loss in performance averaging 1 hour every 10% I have yet to end a 16-18 hour day with less than 40% battery and I'm an extremely heavy user (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, spotify all used constantly)

I have a 2XL as a dedicated camera phone so I don't use the camera on the F1 and haven't installed the GCAM mod, although have heard and read good things about that mod and this phone.

Couldn't recommend this phone more, B28 and NFC haven't been concerns so I was fine without having those. Although I can see someone struggling to get this phone if they're heavily reliant on NFC.

I wouldn't use this phone if Havoc OS didn't exist for it, as I find MIUI repulsive.

    • +1

      find MIUI repulsive

Whilst I do agree, "Miui for Poco" is a lot less fat than regular MIUI on Xiaomi phones.

I really do like Poco launcher as well. In fact, I've used Poco launcher on other phones as well.

      • I'll agree the miui for poco is what I think is the best version of miui I still struggled to enjoy it. I haven't tested any other phone using miui so that's all from what I've read

I tend to stick to nova launcher for the customisation element.

Also would you be able to tell me how to quote on mobile?

I got this phone earlier this year. Very happy with it and I'd recommend it.

I installed Pixel Experience CAF version. THIS WAS A BIT OF A NIGHTMARE. But it is possible. It was less smooth than other flashing experiences.

Great battery life. Good camera (using pixel experience ie gcam). I love the headphone jack. I slightly miss NFC but not a big deal.

Probably for me the biggest issues are:
-No B28. I hadn't realised, but B28 really helps with getting reception inside buildings in built-up areas. There are times I've been indoors in the middle of a city with no reception. I don't know if it's the lack of B28, but I suspect it is.
-Sometimes for no reason it just restarts itself. I think this could be due to my dodgy flashing, so I don't blame the phone and tbh it's not a big deal, it's never happened during a call or something.

  • This phone is excellent. Always great reception and battery life, using a Voda MVNO. Never lost reception, great download speeds, across Melbourne CBD and within the tram tracks.

Also using a telstra reseller on the second SIM; equally good results too.

    Go for it.

    • Hi may i ask have you ever tried using it with bluetooth tws earphone? do you experience "echo" kinda effect when listen to talk show or standup comedy etc? Thanks

      • Bluetooth with JBL free and Jabra 'phones are perfect

Sometimes issues with Sammy bluetooth speakers M series, K series are fine, go figure…

  • Damn, this can't be sent to NZ :(

NZ Post Youshop doesn't support Aussy either. Anyone able to get this for me?

    • Let's blame Peter Dutton

  • this was 270 like 3 months back and i was waiting for the k20 pro, what a disappointment, this is still much better value

    • +1

      what was 270?

  • would you say that it is better than this phone?
    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/huawei-nova-3i-128gb-smartph…

    • Is it in stock anywhere near you live?
Pocofone is better than the one you linked. More Ram, better camera etc

  • I have this phone, can say its very geared towards price to performance
If you just use it for fb/whatsapp/isnta its a great phone

    • +1

a $50 phone could do those things. this phone can run nintendo wii games

  • Anyone else unlocked this thing and running a custom rom? I'm running pixel experience and it's amazing. Camera is so good with Google cam too

  • Is there Pocophone F2 coming out soon?

  • Is this the global version with play store installed?

  • Deciding between this and the LG v30, which is better?

    • Poco phone for the 845.

    • Depends on how you'll be using the phone.

Poco for bigger battery, slightly newer processor and better selfie cam.

V30 for better display, better main cam, and other premium features (NFC, wireless charging, waterproofing).

Overall, I'd recommend the v30, unless you really need the (negligible) performance upgrade.

  • 64gb had Sold out

  • I got this phone in early October as my first introduction to android and I'm happy with it

  • Looking at upgrading from a galaxy s8, screen is cracked and would rather a new budget phone than repairing the s8's screen

People who have used both devices is there a big difference between camera and screen quality?

  • Is there a link to the 64GB version?

    • +1

Sold out. The link is now linking to Mi 8 Lite.

      • Cool, thanks

  • Did someone actually get this deal? I had placed the order on Friday, I got a message from the seller today asking me to cancel the order as they were out of stock. Is that the normal protocol on eBay? Shouldn’t they just cancel the order and do a refund?

    Would appreciate your input.

    • Ordered at like 1am Saturday morning, received phone today.

      • Did you order the 64GB version or 128GB? Mine was 64GB

        • If you request a cancellation, they don't get flagged for crappy service.

          Sneaky buggers.

        • 64 gigabees

  • I received my phone today which was pretty fast to deliver. The only problem is they gave me a USA/UK travel adapter but the poco uses a Europe Plug… but luckily I can use my old phone charger to charge the poco. Can't really be bothered to get them to replace the travel adapter since I can use my old phone charger

  • USA/UK travel adapter but the poco uses a Europe Plug

What? Do you mean they gave you a travel adaptor that doesn't plug into Aussie power?
