As a gesture of goodwill, HP would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase the Omen by HP 15-dc1050tx laptop at the heavily discounted price of $3099 (inc GST).

talk about a bait and switch

    • -1

talk about a price error and switch :)

  • Hi for those who are interested now the price gone up to 3299

  • +1

Just got the cancel email and offer to purchase for $1499

  • +10

Made a complaint to accc seeing as the new price seems to be quite a a gouge.

https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/report-a… for anyone here who ordered and feel like complaining.

    • The RRP is $2000 (or $US1000).
      Was mistakenly discounted to $500.
      Now offered for $1500.
      Where's the gouge?

      • +1

$3200 on the website and 1500 discount.
        3200 VS 2000

    • +3

      Complaint left

      FYI
      Name: HEWLETT-PACKARD AUSTRALIA PTY LTD
      ACN: 004 394 763
      ABN: 74 004 394 763

      • Thanks. Complaint left from me too

        • Same. Also replied to their email and provided evidence that they are breaching ACL.

    • -2

Yeh a little ant like you is gonna make a huge impact to the accc lmao

      • +4

an ant's neck can easily hold 5000 times the ant's weight. There are a few thousand people who bought this laptop

        • +3

The ACCC is no fan of HP either, at least three successful actions against them in the past that I can recall.

      • ready the fly spray!

  • +2

Someones gonna get the sack 😂😁

    • +1

      Why is that enjoyable?

  • +6

Lol @ people complaining to the ACCC and the like.

It's obvious they made a mistake, and now you're expecting them to honour it? Some of you guys are very hard to please

    • +8

Not advocating going to the ACCC but something does smell fishy here.
Regular price was originally $2000. This matches up with reviews stating a $US RRP of $1000, so apparently not an error.
Discount code was BLITZ1500 for $1500 off. Makes sense that the code name matches the discount, plus the same code is still active now so it was also apparently not an error.
It really looks like they've just jacked the price to $3200 to sell the product for $1500/$1700 instead of the original offer of $500, because that base price makes no sense - it's even more expensive than their i7 models.

    • +9

The $1500 discount was not a mistake according to people's interaction with the reps earlier in the thread. They were knowingly offering a $1500 discount and was marketed in their own website. It wasn't some sort of hack. The "mistake" is that they forgot to jack up the prices so that the $1500 discount doesn't hit so hard. This is reminiscent of the eBay price jacking we see every week or so

      • +6

Yeah, it's become very apparent that the so-called "price error" was them forgetting to jack the prices when the sale started. For example:

        i9-9880, 32GB ram, RTX2080: $4299
        i7-9750, 16GB ram, RTX2070: $4499

Why would the lower spec'd machine be $200 more? Because it's part of the promo with a $1600 discount on offer.

        • +4

Why would the lower spec'd machine be $200 more? Because it's part of the promo with a $1600 discount on offer.

          oh God

  • Got an email saying the order has been cancelled, and offered to purchase it for $1499 or the refund will appear in my account within 3 business days.

Funny they also sent me a feedback of their support but of course who's going to be happy about their order being cancelled… although I expected this from the moment I ordered it lol

  • +1

Just got a request from HP to review the support received. Bad way to start the support team's KPIs for the month.

  • +2

Lol at all the people threatening to call police FBI lawyer and ACCC and today tonight

    ….

Come on if companies honoured all these deals they would go bankrupt

    • +4

This was their own fault for setting up discounts that assumed jacked prices, then forgetting to actually jack the prices.

      • -3

Okay but I doubt moulder and Scully are going to get involved unless there's something paranormal going on

        The truth is out there

  • +7

They emailed me 4 times telling me my order was cancelled. I only ordered one laptop.

    • +2

Same here lmao they can't even give an email right. I was feeling fine until I discovered that this wasn't just a normal error but a failed price jack. I don't know why but I just see it as a scummy move to price jack like this. Marking up a product by $1300 to give a $1500 discount?

      • +1

I wonder what would happen if you edited their offer in the email to match the original $499 price and replied "I accept this offer", like that guy who modified his bank's credit card offer and got them to accept it.

    • They emailed me 4 times

Guess they're really trying to hammer it in that they're not honouring it lol

      • +1

        It's a revenge
We bombarded them with chats and calls few days ago.

    • +1

Same I only had it sitting in the cart on my account and hadn't paid for it. Be interesting if they refund me :P

  • Did HP hire the same guy from the House Store (price error for Maxwell & Williams Cosmopolitan 56 Piece Cutlery set $39.98).
Clearly, this person is blind to the number '1'. Cutlery set at $139.98 value and Omen at $1,499.

The processing fees for refunds are negligible considering for marketing.
HP didn't take any immediate action to remove the advertisement BLITZ1500 and attracted a lot of customers.
I'm sure most of us know about Omen now

  • +7

Legit i think its our civil duty to report HP?
How many people not in the know will go ahead and buy this deal thinking its great they saved $1500?

  • -7

Geesus people if you are reporting this to ACCC you are wasting our own tax money. Seriously.

    • +3

Not if they fine HP for misleading and deceptive behaviour.
      Then we are winning.

    • +5

Why? This is exactly what Kogan got busted for.

Plus if the ACCC sues them they will include their costs.

    • We are creating jobs lol.

But legit if some one like my mum seen this she would buy it and not know any better. They jacked up the price by $1300 is that really okay?

  • +3

    Just got Delivery..
    …of c email

  • Would anyone buy this laptop at $1499?

I actually (quickly) went through the MSY notebook list (https://cdn.msy.com.au/Parts/notebook.pdf) and felt that i5 9300H, 144 Hz IPS, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD and GTX 1660 Ti for $1499 isn't a bad deal at all.

What are your thoughts? Is anyone planning to pull the trigger?

    • +5

If you really want to reward HP for their bait and switch….

      • regardless of price jacking or bait and switch..if you are in the market for one machine like this, would you buy it?
        I couldn't find one with 144hz IPS screen, I think that's a huge factor..

    • +4

Been looking into this and the vendor with the most customisation for comparison purposes I can find is the Metabox Alpha-X
      https://www.metabox.com.au/store/Gaming-Laptops/Alpha-X-Rang…

      The Metabox 1660Ti model has:
*A better CPU i7-9750H vs. i5 9300H - however some research says that for strictly gaming, there won't be that much difference
*A bigger primary drive 512GB vs. 256GB but no second drive, which the HP appears to have a 1TB spinning HD
*No Thunderbolt which the HP appears to have. Depends how you value this feature, it (for me) seems to be hard to find laptops with this + dedicated GPU in the same price range

When you upgrade the Metabox to 144hz screen it comes to: $1,648.00
IMO you would want to upgrade the ram to 16GB on both. So you're looking at an extra $65 on the Metabox at time of ordering to bring it to 1x16GB.
For the HP you'll be buying a single 8GB aftermarket to bring it to 2x8GB or a single 16GB to bring it to 1x8GB + 1x16GB total. That's going to be somewhere between $50-$150.

A few recent deals I also went through for comparison.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/473008
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/470155
So you can get quite a step up to GTX 2060/2070 for about another $500 - and these deals weren't even that well received/upvoted.

Taking a look over at Dell which also offers pretty good range of specs for various comparisons, you can get RRP of $1999 for something pretty similar.
      https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/game/new-dell-g3-15/spd/g-se…
      -No 144hz
      -No Thunderbolt

Then adding Thunderbolt is going to push the price up quite a bit:
      https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/game/dell-g5-15-special-edit…
      https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/game/dell-g7-15-gaming-lapto…

There's likely some better comparisons out there other people might find, but the general conclusion I came to is that it certainly isn't an amazing deal, but does have a bit of a niche in terms of having 144hz screen + Thunderbolt. If those two features aren't important to you, I'd wait around for a better deal.

Unfortunate that the AMEX expired on 2nd Aug (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/467734) as it would have made it a bit more appealing.

And just keep in mind their "special offer" is $300 cheaper than what they intended to sell it for anyway:
      https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx…
      @ $1799

      • There was one particular online review which found it wasn't actually a thunderbolt 3 port (despite the manual stating it was), just USB C gen 3.2.

  • +2

Would of been perfectly cool if they said they messed up the coupon code and then refunded everyone. Business as usual.

But then to be so blatant in inflating the RRP 60% after so many thousand people knew how much it cost to try catch people out is retarded. Filled an ACCC report, not because i'm salty or expected to them to fulfil it but to stop someone from seeing this thinking it's a huge discount and buying it.

Businesses do this all the time and it's an expected tactic, but to do it after all this exposure is just ignorant and arrogant.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-23/kogan-sued-by-accc-fo…

    • +3

This is my best guess at why the price has been jacked up.

Price was actually correctly listed at the RRP of $1999 and it was the code/discount that was incorrect. As past users have stated the August sales were advertised as up to $550 savings this laptop in itself should have had a $200 discount from what I have read.

I believe the response of upping the price $1300 above retail was due to the fact that the BLITZ1500 coupon in itself is not technically a price error, meaning HP has had to increase the price up to $3299 in order to claim it as a ‘price error’ as opposed to a discount sale error.

HP’s response email offering it at “heavily discounted” $1499 in combination with the current jacked up list price may trick consumers especially unaware ones into buying this item as they believe it’s ~55% off RRP ($1800/$3299) whereas it is truly ~25% off RRP ($500/$1999). This same logic can also be said for people (non cancellation email) who come across it on HP’s website who see the BLITZ1500 coupon and believe they are receiving ~45% off RRP ($1500/$3299)

I’m starting to think this entire response is very fishy. Sure it may have been a genuine mistake, but the way HP have handled this is not fair and would benefit them over the consumers. Increased publicity of OMEN, lead people into believing they are getting a great deal (essentially tricking), using price jacking as a justification of a price error, waited an extended period to update customers with the outcome.

I have never reported a company for a mass ‘price error’ cancellation before, but I will be reporting HP for how they handled the situation as I believe it is not fair on us the potential customers.

      • Note: currently out of stock via online website, so will stop people buying through that Avenue until is restocked/ units become available once people decline ‘price error’ Ofer / it expires.

  • -4

A true OzBargainer doesn't go to ACCC, Today Tonight, ACA to b*tch and moan about a price error. They just move on.

I've been to many price errors. You'll get used to it newbies. Then you'll say the same to the n00bs years from now.

    • +4

This isn't just a price error. It's a misleading promotion with prices jacked up to give the false impression of large savings. The "error" was that they forgot to increase the prices before applying the discounts.

      • I have left an alternative analysis above as to what I believe occurred but your scenario could also be likely ssquid. If HP did intend to inflate product prices prior to the sale, it would create a false impression of the effective discount, creating urgency and a false sense of the effective discount.

  • +7

Lol at all these butthurt people who are still in denial using 'upholding principles' as an excuse to moan on and type up conspiracy theories about not getting something at what clearly was too good to be true to begin with.

I hope you guys at least get some satisfaction in the process to numb the pain of not getting a $499 laptop.

I'm counting on this to be down voted, so please oblige me.

    • +2

If they owned the mistake and apologised accordingly it wouldn’t worry me but given that they have either:

      (1) Intended to price jack prior to sale and then offer large discount but forgotten to up the price. (The more sinister option. Which I now believe is less likely myself)

      Or

      (2) Genuinely got the discount voucher BLITZ1500 incorrect and price jacked after cancelling everyone’s orders. To make it look like we are still getting a large Discount at either 1499 or 1799 and to potentially satisfy the ‘price error’ potential legal obligations of ACL/ HP policy.

      • +1

Why play the righteousness card against a MNC? They don't belong in the same sentence. The right yet improbable thing to have done is to email HP and inform them of a possible pricing error instead of exploiting it. Because as a consumer we automatically assume the role of the smaller guy and it's therefore OK to buy a $499 laptop and simply call it a day.

        • +2

You still think we are exploiting a pricing error but the simple fact is they were offering a $1500 off coupon code with no intent for the claimed discount to even come close to what the final discount comes to. They made a poor choice by telling people via the live chat that the discount was not an error. It makes it blatantly obvious that they just forgot to jack up the prices.

If they said yes the discount was an error and the original price of $2000 was right then it would've played out a lot better for them.

      • Have none of you looked at the page? It's still up and the banner still advertises the BLITZ1500 coupon saying $1500 off.

        https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx…

Make no mistake this is definitely (1).

  • +2

Haha weird, I got 4 cancellation emails

    Followed by a feedback email.

It's like they're trying to rub it in

    • Yeah same, multiple emails yesterday and today. Seem to just be rubbing it in haha

  • +4

Pfft… and my neg was downvoted and cancelled when I called this on the first page. Their Blitz advert said up to $550 off and the deal was obviously too good to be true.

    • +2

Yeah no business is going to take losses this big unless it's someone like amazon. Stuff like this and the 1c razer phone were never going to be honored, it's pretty obvious. Especially when hundreds of people are ordering it. Maybe if the OP's kept it to themselves, but once it's on here.. no way lol.

  • +18

Just received 5th cancellation email from HP, 20hours after the other 4 emails. I think my order is now the Cancellest order

  • +1

Yesterday I received the cancellation email and not long after that I got the refund in my PayPal account, pending it to appear in my actual bank account.

Just half an hour ago I received another email from HP support, from [email protected]:

We regret to inform you that your order SCP?????? has been cancelled due to either payment clearance issues, incorrect shipping address details, suspected fraudulent activity, inability of HP to get in contact with you or other issues.

Within the next 24hours please expect a call from a HP representative who will work with you on the solution.

In the interim should you wish to speak with HP, please call us on 13 23 47 and choose (option 2).

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused and will work to process your new order in the shortest possible timeframe.

    Regards,
    Customer Support Specialist
    HP PPS Australia Pty Ltd

Has anyone got an email like this and a call from HP? Are they genuine? I mean if we already had refunded in PayPal why do the need to call us again? I'm now more worry about our personal details has been hacked…

    • Yes, I got it too.

    • received as well … that makes about 4 or so in total for me.

    • I got this email and three copies of the original cancellation email, but no refund yet…

    • +1

I got this response after I told them to shove their $1500 offer where the sun don't shine.

I guess they need clarification where exactly, which I look forward to providing.

  • +4

    Another disgusting behaviour from HP:

    Dear xcxxx ,

We regret to inform you that your order SCPO9xxxxx has been cancelled due to either payment clearance issues, incorrect shipping address details, suspected fraudulent activity, inability of HP to get in contact with you or other issues.

    • +9

There is an option missing there: "our own friggin' fault/incompetency"

      • +4

5 mails for single order already… interesting explanations…

has been cancelled due to either payment clearance issues, —- > No issues wit the payment,,
incorrect shipping address details, —> 100% correct
suspected fraudulent activity, —-> WTF ??
inability of HP to get in contact with you —-> I am contactable , hence the mail..
or other issues. —-> Yes you idiots .. fxxxd up again…

        • +1

I don't care how many cancellations email.

I too got this one half insinuating that its my fraudulent card is some random error thats not their fault,
          That pisses me off.

Am considering reporting them just to prove a point

        • -2

You do understand it's a generic email, right?!? But please carry on, it's quite entertaining… :)

          • +4

@bargainshooter: A generic email pointing fingers in any direction but themselves. Not nice.

    • HP sucks lately

  • +11

Lodged a complaint with ACC for their attempt to mislead customers. I forgive them for the pricing error but jacking prices and sending 5 cancellation emails feels like they are such a huge computer IT company and obviously haven’t invested in their own IT infrastructure.
RIP HP. Never buying HP laptop. Amen instead of Omen.

    • +4

Please keep us informed on your progress with the ACCC. I'll have popcorn and campari and soda ready.

      • +1

But jayawt didn't go to the ACCC - I think he/she complained to the Australian Christian Churches or Associated Catholic Colleges?

        • +5

Ahh, they're appealing to a higher authority

  • +4

So full……glad I have runout of popcorn and the 4 day movies credits are starting to roll. Wonder what’s next….

    • Drama is Not finish. people hasn't got their money refunded yet…

      • +2

to be fair they did say 3 BD for refunds

        • Why should it take 3 BD to provide a refund? They take the money as soon as order is placed. Refund should be processed as soon as the order is cancelled

  • I just got my SEVENTH cancellation email…

  • HP is being stupid, lot of people here are tech savvy and some of them probably influence their work mates/ work, relatives, friends on what computers to buy. i am not going to recommend HP to anyone. And that will be AT LEAST 20 people who ask for my advice.

Also, interestingly, I will be buying 40 - 50 computers for work next year and guess which brand it will be, NOT HP.

    See ya HP.

    • +3

Should never have been HP to begin with lol

    • Never go with HP ever. Logistics are a nightmare with them

  • Blegh, because I ordered through Paypal through my 28 Degrees it came out of pending the day before my statement was issued I got hit with the 1% Shoppers Protection fee of $16~.

Called 28 Degrees and they said there's no way to waive it, no big deal but anyone have any suggestions on getting the $$ back for that?

  • Offered 'Extremely' discounted offer of $1499 for the laptop which is still a good deal considering price jack + coupon still $1799 on their site.

  • +3

I used my AmEx card to purchase this machine and today I checked my account I received the refund + $150 cashback.

    • I hope the cashback comes out of HPs pocket,
