Sony A7 III (ILCE7M3B) Camera Body + 24mm-105mm Lens Kit $2567.42 + 2000 Qantas Points Delivered @ Qantas Store

3285
QANTASSTAFF

My first deal post so let me know if I've done anything wrong.

I think this may be a pricing error as the body and 28-70 kit lens is the same price.

The a7iii body went as low as $2000 from memory and the 24-105 went as low as 1500. So if my math is right this particular kit is the cheapest by approx $730.

The cash portion of the purchase also earns you 5541 PTS.

I'm not sure if the Qantasstaff code works (from the Sony WH-1000XM3 post), but if it does it could savd you another 10%.

    • Did you checkout?

    • I have it also in my cart but don't have enough point to check out.

      • Mine has left the building (cart) shame. As I was in the same boat, wasn't going to use the code, just snoozed.

  • +1

So, I did not use the staff code when placing the order, mainly because of a laggy site.

Decided to call them for a "regular" follow up on the order.
I did get through almost immediately, and after going through the obligatory ID validation, was provided the following update by the rep:
    - The order has been sent to the supplier for fulfillment.
    - No updates from the supplier yet on the tracking details.
    - She will follow up with the supplier on the tracking details and update me through email in the next 24 hours.

Assuming I did not get the speel about the fraud investigation, it seems to me like atleast the ones who have not used the code are in the clear for now (of course unless the supplier cannot source the stock at all)!

    • what time did you order?

    • Nice work, very lucky!

    • 13/08/2019 - Called them and was informed order was approved.

Called yesterday, they told me same thing:

      • Went through ID validation
      • The order has been sent to the supplier for fulfillment (My order will be fulfilled by Harvey Norman)
      • Will receive tracking details from the supplier in 2-3 business days.
      • Damn… I knew I should have gone for this deal…. Pulled out as I thought it would be cancelled.

Anyway, well done to those who are going to get an absolute bargain!

      • I called yesterday as well and been told security hold has been lifted. Shows 2 Sep as ETA.

      • +1

It's not Qantas who is doing the "investigation" it is the Supplier. Because they don't have stock and trying to source it I guess. I reckon some orders may go through but majority will be cancelled as I can't see Harvey Norman or anyone else having the lenses in quantity (I took a look at HN website - the lens is out of stock with delivery back order date of around 6 days). I don't think the helpdesk peeps can do or see anything in the system except "Investigation" status by the Supplier which we all have as a status.

        • It's not Qantas who is doing the "investigation" it is the Supplier.

          This

        • HN is out of stock because they are diverting all the stock they have and sourcing some more to full fill the Qantas order.

          I'll show myself out.

      • @pabbins and @jk88 - did they ask you whether you used a discount code and did you tell them?

        • +1

          They didn't asked about code

If this goes through successfully, I'll never be able to buy this setup for anything above the price. Bah…

    • My thoughts exactly! Or it will require a few sessions with a shrink…

  • +1

If you didn't call them up and/or were turned down by the call centre, does your order still show an ETA?

Mind you, to see the ETA, you have to CLICK ON the order, which gives you a detailed page.

    • +1

I've been checking my order page, and it's still in progress, no eta.

      I haven't and won't call them.

      • You have to click on the order to see the ETA.

        • +2

I've clicked on the order and all I see is "Item status: Processing". No ETA.

          • +1

@julesytime: I’m the same - no eta. Just order date and details and “processing”

    • my eta is 28 aug… its been like that since order… status is still processing

      • My eta is 3 September… its been like that since order (even after phone call as well)… status is still processing

I'm in Perth, WA by the way

      • So it sounds like EVERYONE has an ETA, if they click on the order?

Which means that lifting the security hold hasn't really given us anything tangible, aside from the few people who received emails confirming the removal of the hold.

        • +5

im not worried, if it goes through then its a great deal… if not .. no big loss to me… calling them up will achieve nothing imho … all you get are some call centre people who really dont have any idea… imho, once its been forwarded to the supplier, its all good and you just need to wait for them. im sure sony can easily source 200 kit lenses…. this aint no 200-600mm monster…

        • +1

No eta listed on my order. But also not sure what the ‘security hold’ thing is about. My cc payment went from ‘pending’ to cleared in my bank account on Monday morn

  • So while we wait, anyone wanna play the wild speculation game on how many orders there are for this kit at this price? Interesting there's been at least another 1.5k clicks on the deal since it was marked as expired. Based on the 166 subscriptions to this thread currently, I reckon less than 500 orders, maybe 300-400 or so. Could potentially be up around 1000 I guess.. unlikely more than 1 in 8 clickthroughs were purchases though. When the store was listing number of views on the product page, it was essentially dead in-line with the ozb click stat haha..

    • im sure sony would happily accept a 2.5 million dollar order on cameras.

    • +1

Based of the subscription to this post and the amount of comments, looks like 200 to 300 orders.

      • there would be people who don't have an ozb account but constantly check the deals.. maybe another 50-100 orders…

  • +2

Called about an hour ago. I was advised that the order has been sent to the supplier and will be advised via email if the order will be cancelled or fulfilled. I pushed for an ETA on the email. She said was hoping for this week but couldn't confirm.

    • +1

supplier cancelling would not be a good look lol.

    • thanks for calling them on behalf of us! is your order status still says 'in process'?

      • +2

Still in process and nil ETA on my order page.

        • Oh ok.

At least it says 3rd of September on my ETA field, but it has been like that since the beginning anyway

    • Did you order with a code?

      • +3

        Sure did.

  • +8

After following this thread for 5 days, I just voted for the deal.
It feels like placing a flower on a tombstone.

    • +1

      oof!

    • this made me lol

  • Why are people calling. It said 10 days, if you needed before you shouldn’t have bought it

  • -1

I reckon Qantas execs made an upfront decision to cancel all remaining orders that used the staff code. However, to cover their back side, they sent it to the legal team for review. The complication here is that Qantas already approved some orders with the code and may legally expose itself if it now cancelled the rest. It could be blamed for applying dual standards. Qantas execs may claim a mistake on releasing the initial few orders with codes but that would point fingers to a weakness in the organisational processes, again putting a few jobs on the line. Good possibility of some differences of opinions on legal implications within the QF legal team as well. Hence, likely the delay.

In any case, QF would be pretty dumb to cancel the camera orders now. The customer segment that could shell out $xxxx on a discretionary hobby item is attractive and valuable for an airline. The total financial loss from this camera sale is unlikely to be more than $200K but the long term cost of alienating a sizable number of moderate to high networth customers is much higher. For instance, I could easily channel much of my company's business travel via Virgin instead of Qantas. This will be roughly 300 flexible economy tickets for domestic and 100 business class for overseas trips a year.

    • +2

Or the alternative view is that these buyers are extremely price sensitive and have no strategic value or allegiance to the Qantas brand.

      • An alternative to the alternative view is that QF FF members with decent points are unlikely to be 'extremely price sensitive'. They are just a bit allergic to 'virgin' and had so far preferred a more 'frequented' airline. However, this could change now.

  • +2

Just chucking in my 2 cents:

    • I purchased the item on Sunday 11/Aug 12:51pm.
    • On the website, my estimated delivery date increased from 29-Aug to 03-Sep.
    • Called Qantas line yesterday (call centre possibly in Philippines), was stated the same templated answer like others eg. order under investigation with no ETA.
    • The suspense is killing me.

I will update everyone once I know more.

  • I really hope they get back to us with SOME information tomorrow, as we won't have any updates over the weekend!

    • +1

i reckon there won't be any real developments until tue-wed next week. it'll probably take that long for suppliers to get their shit together and have some kind of proper idea of fulfilment timeframes / possibility.

      • just smile and wave boys…

      • You're probably right!

    • also i'd like to know what's going on with some people calling up and being quizzed about using discount codes. the whole thing is a bit odd. you'd think they either: A) would contact us to check eligibility, B) know which code was used and don't care, or C) don't know which code was used but can see a 10% discount, so have no way of knowing which orders should be scrapped. If the latter, even though it's probably the majority that could be scrapped, they can't make assumptions because it's a minefield… and so that's why they started asking people? to see if they would help in getting their own orders cancelled? weird.

      • I suspect the code used would be stored somewhere in the system - but perhaps the call centre reps can't see it?

If no one can see which code was used - or even worse, if a code was used at all, then things get a lot more messy on their side!

        • I hope that info isn't there, but I strongly suspect they record the discount code used, if only for marketing analytics.

          • +3

@eggboi: Yeah, it would be a tremendously poor implementation of the promo-code system if it didn't capture which orders used which codes. Having said that, given how laggy the site was, a tremendously poor implementation doesn't seem out of the question haha!

        • @poppingtags
Unfortunately the customer reps do know what promo code you've used.
I confirmed that with them, and it's apparently clearly visible on their screen when they check your order.

          • @Ausdave: So why would they be asking callers if they used a discount code, and which code?

            • +2

              @eggboi: @bohdud
I queried her what promo code was used for my order, stated she can see I used the birthday code (my birthday is in August).

I also understand that since the call centre is sourced overseas, the consistency of training and experience varies.

Based on my work experience, the order fulfilment is as follows:
Customer order > Qantas ecomerce system > Vendor's Warehouse Management System > "in stock" vendor's warehouse, "not instock" vendor's supplier warehouse (local/overseas) > vendor's Advanced Shipping Notice/ Dispatch Advice EDI sent to Qantas > logistics/delivery company sends goods

Every Vendor's e-commerce system and procurement/supply chain is different, this results in communication delays/inconsistencies

              • +1

@Ausdave: Thanks for the info. As someone with the same name and birthday month as you, I will feel doubly discriminated against if your order gets filled and mine doesn't 😂

The dang site wouldn't accept the birthday code (assuming it was BDAYAUG19 you used) even though I qualify. So I resorted to using the staff code which went through no worries.

                • @eggboi: How did you get this code mate? My wife's bday was yesterday and I tried the code but it didn't work…. "You are not eligible for this promotion"….

                  • @dockersrule: @tjmckay
I can't speak for bohdud, but I was sent an email 01-Aug "Happy birthday, _____ We'd love to help you celebrate."

In my Qantas account preferences under "Qantas Frequent Flyer email subscriptions", I had majority of communications ticked.

Maybe also check if your wife's profile date of birth etc. was populated.

                    • @Ausdave: Thanks Dave.

Yeah, she got an email on the 1/8 but it was only - triple points flying Qantas, $30 Qantas hotel voucher or $25 off Qantas wine….

                      Boo….

                  • @dockersrule: Yeah I got the same message when I tried to use the code. Looks like it must be targeted as I have got birthday codes in the past and I know other people who got them this year. They always have the same format afaik. They must just enable certain codes on a per-account basis, but that totally undermines the reasoning for cancellation of orders using the staff code. If their system accepted the staff code, it must be valid, and somebody in IT made it generic or something?

      • +4

I contacted them about my birthday discount in July and tried twice with different agents to try get it by pretending I got the promo via email (which didn't happen). Long story short they wouldn't give me the promo and they also said that they have no way of seeing who has been given the birthday discount codes or what discount codes are even available.

Updates: Sony 24-105mm G lens now is out of stock at Harvey Norman.

    • wow, that's really a good and interesting find.

      • Ships in 4-10 business days Australia wide
        Delivered by a trusted supplier

        ^^ thats what it says - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-fe-24-105mm-f4-full-fra…

Is Mr Harvey out of his own stock and looking elsewhere now lol

      • +1

"limited stock" at JB Hifi as well. No pickup stock visible near brisbane or sydney. melb cbd store apparently has stock haha. do with this potentially useless info what you will!

    • These were Out of Stock from yesterday

  • +3

Me when people start saying Qantas might cancel orders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6kYod3_gwk

  • +3

Sony store at sony.com.au is showing 24-105mm in stock. Its hard to believe a single OZB sweep is cleaning out all the stock in the country.

    • +1

Even harder to believe Qantas would have access to most of said stock.

      • If you call up sony directly and request a quote for 200 units… pretty sure sony would want to talk to you

        • -1

it would exceed the supply allocation to australia. all these would be projected ahead of time and you cant just ring the factory to put on an overtime shift for ozb.
would be a headache for a supplier, leading to 5 month delays and angry customers.

      • How do you think these cameras/lenses get to Australia, container ships and planes, who has lots of planes, Qantas.

  • +4

I dreamt my order got cancelled lol!

    • You gave me a heart attack. I read "my order got cancelled".

      • Aha, that'd be a surprising first post of the morning

  • +4

I am going ask for compensation from Qantas for causing too much stress :-).

  • Day 6……….

    • most peoples eta is still another 2 weeks away LOL

  • +2

I called customer service for the first time today and they seems to know I used staff code which create whole investigation for all of us. Later I offered them to pay 10% and remove the discount code incase that helps but insisted to rather wait for email reply about the outcomes. It sounded positive to me as they are not interested in cancelling but just investigating where that code came from.
    Let's all be positive
By the way I already sold my A7iii. Have no camera to use now. I must be an idiot.

    • +1

      ouch, you sold already? rookie.
at least you are ready for a7riii run out pricing! (and the November $500 eftpos card offer and maybe amex deal)
I also wouldnt be surprised of hearing of the ozb who wouldve put the listing on to sell the new one already, just with a long auction end date.

regarding the paying extra offer, that would be borderline bribery and would be against some consumer law to ask for more money for the product 'to expedite your order'. even swapping to 24-70 lens would be 'bait and switch'

its all or nothing at this stage.

      • +1

I'm not sure I agree that it's bribery. If they intend to claim that we misused a voucher code to get an invalid discount, then it doesn't seem unreasonable at all to offer to pay that amount back.

    • thanks for the update bud, all sounds positive

  • +8

How about a tangential discussion to keep us occupied/distracted while we wait?

    1. What do you currently shoot with?
    2. Why did you buy the A7iii?

    I'll start us off:

    1. A) I've mostly been shooting with film cameras lately, in the last year I've collected 12 (Olympus OM2SP, Mju II, XA, 35RC / Voigtlander Bessa R3a, R / Bronica SQ-A, Nimslo 3D, Konica A4 X 2, Lomography Belair)! I've also bought my own scanner and develop my own black and white film – it’s such a rewarding process and I love the colours!
      B) On the digital front, I have a Lumix LX100 which I use for travel - I love all the manual controls, how pocketable it is and the stellar lens – but I’ve been left wanting by the lack of resolution. The LX100ii doesn't feel like enough of an upgrade for me to justify it.
      C) A Canon 550D, which despite its age, is still a great camera but it doesn’t get taken out too often.
      D) A Pixel 3XL and I plan upgrading to the 4XL when it comes out – the camera is ridiculous!
      E) A 360 degree Nikon action cam that was used frequently while travelling.

    2. I want the A7iii because it manages to stay relatively small and light, while providing full frame resolution. There are also plenty of adapters that will let me use my film lenses on the A7iii, which is ace :)

    • +22

      1) I shoot with iphone

      2) I bought A7iii as I am a true ozbargainer and never going to use it.

      • +1

        haha, same as me!

      • Same here

      • yep … a true ozbargainer buys first and thinks later … i still havent thought about it because i still dont have it.

      • +1

I have to log in and vote for you. When this deal was posted 2 minutes ago, i checked and closed the windows, but 5 minutes later, I opened the link again and paid as I was afraid of missing the best deal of this year.

        • Hahaha. Thank you

    • +3

I am a camera gear addict. I hold them, smell them, feel them but seldom take photos. In the Nikon range, I have D5100, D3500, Nikkor 35mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 3 x 18-55mm kit lenses, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, 10-20mm, 40mm f2.8 macro, i-ttl external Neewer flash and SB-400 flash. On the Sony side, I have A7, RX10 iii, RX100 vi, RX100 iii, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, Zeiss 55mm f1.8, Sony 28-70mm kit lens and a Godox external flash. Four camera bags, lots of filters, 2 tripods and extra batteries. What am I missing? There are a few old Panasonic and Sony point and shoot cameras lying around as well.

I want to rationalize/streamline my equipment possession now and buying A7iii is part of that process.

      • +2

Join some local photography meetup groups on Facebook. You'll have a great time learning and making friends while hanging out with like-minded people. Way more fun than sitting there thinking "one day I'll do something with all this gear". 'One day' will never happen. Make it your new-week's resolution :)

    • +2

Upgrading from Canon 550D. I was amazed how small Sony is. The G master lenses are expensive and not much stock in the used market but Tamron and Sigma looks promising.

Mainly shoot landscape and night scenes. Just a small hobby. When you nail a good shot with good composition it just so rewarding and satisfying. Also makes me get out more in the outdoor.

    • +3

      1) An old Nikon D3100!

      2) Looking to upgrade for a light and full frame mirrorless camera within my budget.

    • +2

Bought the A7, 55mm & 35mm when they first came out since I knew someone at Sony at the time. Cost me $2100 for all of them. Mostly use them on holidays or the odd occasion that someone wants to have their photo taken or I feel like being creative. I also have a few older film lenses that I like to use with it.

Other cameras: Panasonic GX7/GX9/TZ110, Sony RX100 IV/X3000, Olympus EPL7, Ricoh Theta S, Google Pixel (original one but still happy with the camera, might upgrade to the 4 when it comes out). About 9 M43 lenses currently but should sell some since I don't need them all.

I wasn't planning on buying the A7iii since I don't spend enough time shooting full frame to justify the cost but the price was too good. Bought it to replace the A7 mainly because of the silent shutter (I hate the loud shutter sound of the A7), IBIS, 4K video. I previously had the Sony 24-105 and liked it a lot but felt that it wouldn't get much use outside of holidays and it cost a bit too much to have it just sit there gathering dust so I sold it for as much as I bought it for. This was when it first came out and stocks were low so I had no problems offloading it.

    • +2

I shoot (well, shot) Fuji mostly. I had an X-T3 until it got stolen recently. So I've been looking at replacing that with another Fuji body, but when the A7iii deal came up I had to have a go.

I did actually own an A7iii already for a while but sold it off because I couldn't justify the high price of the lenses. With this including the 24-105 I feel like that covers most of my needs well enough, and will maybe supplement with a nice prime or two at my fav lengths.

Otherwise I use my iPhone X which does a pretty great job too :)

    • +1

Been using an Olmypus E-M1 M43 for about 4 years. Was my first semi professional camera. Did it as an amateur but did a few small shoots also.

Amazing camera and have some of the Pro lenses. I really enjoyed the M43 system. I wasn't planning on upgrading but at this price I'll make the switch to the A7 if the order does come through. I'll be gutted if this order gets cancelled though lol. The M43 line is becoming too expensive - particularly with the E-M1 mk2 they have priced themselves out of the market a bit.

In saying that - you don't need full frame to get good shots - it's more about your own skills and practice.
