Sony A7 III (ILCE7M3B) Camera Body + 24mm-105mm Lens Kit $2567.42 + 2000 Qantas Points Delivered @ Qantas Store

3285
QANTASSTAFF

My first deal post so let me know if I've done anything wrong.

I think this may be a pricing error as the body and 28-70 kit lens is the same price.

The a7iii body went as low as $2000 from memory and the 24-105 went as low as 1500. So if my math is right this particular kit is the cheapest by approx $730.

The cash portion of the purchase also earns you 5541 PTS.

I'm not sure if the Qantasstaff code works (from the Sony WH-1000XM3 post), but if it does it could savd you another 10%.

      1) amateur videos with a smartphone and gimbal

      2) I'm going to an arts festival with music and concerts so I need to get some gear. Already got a Zoom H6 for sound recording and the A7 III looked perfect for photos and videos. I may buy it second hand since I missed on the deal. A bit concerned that it's an overkill for my needs but I'm keen to learn more about photography /videography, and I could always sell it if I'm not using it much.

      1. Sony a6300 with gimbal. A7SIII when?! Would prefer to buy/use a GoPro instead for discreetness and pocketable design.

      2. Too good of a deal, wouldn't mind a second camera for when the a6300 overheats. Lately, been interested in pursuing photography to let go of the gimbal cumbersomeness.

I have an A7 (version 1), which I have been using with a Samyang 14mm f2.8 to take milky way photos.

Finally managed to get a great one the other week, which I was stoked by.

      • ummm, how many samyang lens' had you tried 'to get a great one'?

        • haha, a great photo. I know Samyang lens' are cheap, but this one has been great (especially for the price).

      • How's the Samyang 14mm f2.8 at astro? I've always been interested but living in Sydney is too much light pollution

        • It’s a great lens for the price. Basically you want to shoot approx iso800-6400 (low as you can to get a good image), f3.5-4.0 (2.8 on this lens is a bit soft and heavily vignetted), shutter 15-30sec

          • +1

@eggboi: hmm doesn't shooting at f3.5-f4.0 negate getting this lens in the first place for astro though?

        • +2

It's pretty great. Here is an unedited photo I took with it: https://imgur.com/1HG7HMP

          This one was:

          • F 2.8
          • ISO 8000
          • Time: 30s

This was down somewhere with basically no light pollution though

      A7III with a Batis 85 and Sigma 35 f1.2!

So I can have two + have the 24-105 to play with.

    • +1
      1. Sony a6300 with a Sigma 16 mm f1.4, Sony 18-105 f4 and Sony 35mm f1.8 (most used). I bought it last year as I wanted to upgrade from my RX100M3 which was my "proper" camera and dive into photography. Also have recently upgraded to a OnePlus 7 Pro, but I usually take my a6300.

      2. I've been eyeing the A7 iii for some time and have wanted to get into full-frame. Was planning to upgrade mid next year when the body becomes a bit cheaper, but this came up and was a no brainer to upgrade now!

      • How's one plus 7 compared to a6300?

        • I haven't used the OP7P camera extensively, but I find the images to be a little bit on the oversaturated side when compared to my old phone (Galaxy S7 Edge). Enjoying the wide and the telephoto lens though!

      1. I currently shoot with a Canon 1300d and reached out for advice from the OZB community recently whether I should upgrade: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/452793

      2. Per that forum, ended up going with prime lenses which have had some awesome results with. But now definitely ready for an upgrade. Was tossing up between 5d/6d but wanted the Sony due to lightness / form factor. While the 1300d is fairly light I know the Canon full frames are not. Fingers crossed this comes through!!

Just got a text from StarTrack that my headphones will be delivered by close of business today. I did use the staff code and placed my order on Sunday evening. The tracking link shows it was sent from Melbourne yesterday and scanned in Sydney this morning, and out for delivery now. Nothing on the camera yet. There is not even an ETA in my order details page, just 'in process'.

    • What is the 'order status' for your headphones on the Qantas site? Still 'In process'?

      • +2

Still 'In process' but the clicking the order details page is showing a delivery estimate of 19 August. I reckon online status updates are not accurate.

        • +1

Very interesting, thanks for the update! :)

  • +5

I know multiple qantas staff and they even mentioned to me they didn't know about the code. So don't think it is a going to be an issue.

    • Yeah same. Asked a friend last night. Was kinda hoping to get a look at the terms and conditions of the code haha. She didn't know anything about it.

      • +2

If the code is accepted by the site without showing any specific T&C, and there are no relevant passages in the overall QF store T&C, I don't see it being an issue. Countless other deals have honoured orders with codes that supposedly weren't supposed to be 'sitewide' or 'all users'. Unless it's 90% off or something crazy, I don't know of any that have been cancelled for that reason. They simply fix the website, honour all existing orders, and move on. Also this hasn't been like the Qantas Mac Pro debacle a while back (where they listed it for $500 - a clear price error - then refunded all the orders the following day).

My opinion has no bearing on reality, but I'm of the opinion that these orders are now legitimate contracts because Qantas has hung onto the orders for so long. At this point it would require a lot more than a 'sorry' email and 2000 points to make most people happy.

  • It’s been nearly a week since the order was placed. The status is still processing with no eta. The only confirmed official response is the order is under investigation for most buyers. When will they end this endless waiting in the dark? They don’t cancel the orders nor honour it.They appear to just hold the money and not do much.

    • +1

This is qantas… I doubt they really care

  • Maybe this entire situation and their responses have been carefully orchestrated and we're just guinea pigs in a social experiment 🙃 #tinfoilhat

    • +1

I bet this whole stress situation is caused by an average Joe who put the wrong pricing on the wrong product.

      • shhhh nothing to see here, everything is normal, orders will be delivered on the ETAs provided at time of ordering, move along.

    • +6

more potentially useless info: the ozb member 'JASP' who initially posted the 10% off code (on the headphone deal) has only ever posted that one comment and account was created the day before posting the code haha… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/314479

      hello if you're reading! 😉

  • +33

I want to know how many people are in my situation (bought the A7iii + Points + Staff discount code) and left in the dark for nearly a week.

    Please give a plus vote.

    • +3

I reckon wait until at least the ETA date on your order email (prob 28 aug - 3 sep) before demanding any action from Qantas or you risk having them just refund your order. If this all does fall through, you have an easy case to get the points purchase refunded as well (assuming I'm reading correctly and you purchased the 2k points required to order the camera kit). You can illustrate clearly that you only purchased the points in order to buy the camera at the advertised price.

      • +1

Yup, we should just wait. Everyone should go back to their normal life.

Looks like there is a delay in the shipment of headphones but they will honour the deal with code. Fingers crossed for the Camera.

    • +1

seems as though acquiring stock is the biggest issue with both offers now. it would be quite bizarre if they started to take issue with the code now, after having shipped numerous pairs of headphone orders making use of said code. a week or two should be plenty of time to acquire stock for a single large order of these items, whether it's Qantas doing it directly, or via their suppliers (most likely) JB / HN Commercial divisions. just my wildly speculative 2c

  • +8

Had to register and join in the update. Ordered both headphones and camera both with discount code. Received email update (junk box) today at 1pm noting headphone fulfilment is delayed to 23rd August. No update to camera. Personally think both deals will be fulfilled as the same delay happened with the $371 RM Williams boots last year. Long time ozbargainer, thanks guys.

    • +2

Having looked at the headphone thread, looks like orders could remain "in progress" until delivery.

Hoping this deal still goes through!

    • +3

Just had a look at the comments on the RM Williams Qantas deal Dluxion mentioned https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/400946/comments

If anyone needs to soothe their brain thanks to this deal, my takeaway from the comments there was pretty positive. TLDR; some people ordered around 5 Sep 2018 and their orders were delivered 28 Sep - 3 Oct or so.

Also the date of manufacture on the RM boots being as late as the last week of September 2018 shows it's likely Qantas only sources stock after the orders are placed (which is a good sign).

      ~KEEP CALM AND REFRESH OZBARGAIN~

  • +2

Ok, enough is enough…. I must stop thinking about this deal now and get myself ready for the next OZB deal, hopefully this weekend!

  • +3

Haha just got an email for a survey "Qantas Shopping would like to check in". Not sure they actually want my feedback right now.

    • +2

Got the same thing. Got excited til I realised it was just a survey :/

  • How annoying is the popup in the Qantas Store asking you to select Aus/NZ every few minutes you visit in hope your order has moved on from 'In Process'?!

    • +1

I’ve not had that once. Are you using a VPN or smart DNS service?

      • Must just be me. No VPN or smart DNS, just OnePlus 6T and chrome..

  • Qantas Shopping Rewards Store service survey:
Honestly it sucks. After almost a week still no idea whether it is going to be fulfilled or not. Furthermore item was put into security hold without notifying customer.

    Just not good enough!

    • could've waited a bit longer and really give them hell on the survey IF they cancel your order.

    • well it's definitely good enough if they are fulfilling the orders.. i mean the ETA is still 2 weeks off. and as per my previous comment referencing the RM williams situation, they did deliver in a reasonable timeframe. best not to get paranoid and start complaining just yet. but yeah, by all means give them both barrels if and when they try to bail.

  • +5

Ok, since the weekend has started, I won't be checking my order status because no one will process it over the weekend.

Have a good weekend my fellow OZ bargainer, enjoy your weekend and let's not worry too much about our orders for now.

    • You logged in at 2am? 😃

Speaking of slightly off topic talking points…

If you had another $1k to spend on gear… lenses, filters, SD cards, spare battery… how would you do it?

If they do end up shipping, help me compile a shopping list.

    At this stage I'm thinking:

    • Spare battery
    • UV filter for the 24-105
    • Two SD cards as there are two slots (inc. one USH-II one)
    • Screen protector

    That's probably running me $350ish

    Any decent glass for ~$650?

    • Don't fofget mic to match great video capability of A7iii.

    • +1

Spare battery - Wasabi Power. Although the most significant improvement of A7iii From ii is the battery life. Do check if you really need an extra battery.
UV filter - my 0.02c waste of money. CPL is ok.
2 SD cards - planning on to use one good one for RAW and fill the other slot with my 256 Micro SDXC from mobile with an adapter for JPEG.
      Screen protector - yes
Good glass ? Sigma particularly the 35 and 85mm and the new Tamron 24-75mm f2.8.
      Tripod
Strap - Peak Design slide light V3
      Camera Bag
ND filters ? Couple of good (not the best but good) HOYA ND filters and CPL on sale from DCEXPERT, 20% POSTIE ending tonight.

    • +2

UV filter is unnecessary imho. Just keep using lens hood.

  • I couldn't get the deal but I got the gear! Found a second hand, pristine condition Sony A7 III with a 28-70mm lens, OK it's not as good as the 24-105mm but still very happy!

    • How much?

      • -1

        2350

        • that's not bad. what was the shutter count?

          • @cyrax83: That's something I forgot to check before buying!
            It's 4100

    • Don’t worry, no one has gotten this deal… yet!

  • -1

Hey guys first comment on ozb.
    Just got an email today

Thank you for reaching out Qantas Rewards Store.

This is an update on your order

As per supplier, you will get an email confirmation if this order will push thru or will be cancelled.

Not looking good… for me at least…

    • No email received yet..

    • Someone updated your order on a Sunday?

    • Can I just ask two questions? 1. What was the ETA? 2. Did you call prior to get security hold lifted? I'm nervous now.. haha XD

    • +1

Probably an reply to online enquiry.

    • +3

"push thru"? sounds like a weird email

  • Received email today.
I called on the Wednesday when we all started calling.
They lifted the hold and put the order through to supplier like the early phone calls before everyone started getting "investigated".
I also used the discount code…
Account order still says processing with 3rd September delivery date.

    • +1

Screen shot of the email or it didn’t happen

      • +5

No reason to lie on my half thought I'd just add to the conversation as an update. I don't even know how to upload a photo to this but here is a copy of the whole email minus personal info. I also find it weird it's on a Sunday… If you still don't believe me that's ok I'm sure others will receive the same email today.

@eggboi: Sunday of sale at like 11pm at night.
Definitely wasn't one of the first buyers but probably not the last either…

@Locote90: I’m sad not for they cancelling my order, but for having not heard / received anything from the store.

    • +4

They are only open Monday through to Saturday. They have no team that responds to emails on Sundays… and I know this because I am dealing with them on a different purchase when I called on Friday and they told me they will either respond Saturday or Monday onwards (closed on Sunday).

Therefore I have every right to be skeptical about what you are claiming.

  • Too soon to be looking at memory cards, I know. Thoughts on a couple of these? They are 4K compatible and if I buy two I will get free shipping.

    • Nope you want UHS-II for 4K

      • +1

        Help me understand.

Sandisk quote that UHS-I U3 V30 is satisfactory for 4K. I feel like UHS-II would be overkill?

        • +3

          I'm on a sony uhs1 U3 128gb card on my A7rii, it's fine for both 60mbs and 100mbs 4k. Uhs1 U3 is what you're after as a minimum I believe.

    • I use micro sdxc with an adapter. Works fine.

      • +1

While micro sd cards with an adapter work fine in terms of capturing the data, would stay away from that route if possible (especially for professional work) as it just adds another possible point of failure (the adapter)

        • Not pro but just casual. Heard about the possibility of failure theoritically . But then you could also make a case for things going wrong when you insert and remove the SD card. Which happened to me…pin bent inside in the slot. Now I don't have that issue and it doubles up as a mobile memory card.

          • +1

@akula: Yep - good thing the a7iii has dual memory slots!

    • @JROX20
I have the Sony A7 III, and 4K video shooting on a UHS-I is fine.

The Sony camera has two 4k options: 60mbs or 100mbs at 24/25/30 FPS, all settings recorded fine with no issues.

UHS-II will be good if you're shooting a billion pictures a second, as the buffering time to write on the SD card is reduced.

UHS-I handles well enough for burst image shooting, just not as well as UHS-II.

Good thing about the Sony camera is it has a live bar indicator when you approach the buffering limit.

My suggestion is to buy a cheap UHS-I and test it out for your needs before committing to an expensive UHS-II.

Just an FYI, I bought the a few 64mb SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/296083

You can google SD performance bench marking on leading brands, SanDisk does quite well overall in terms of speed and reliability.

You have the option of buying the full sized SD card version or the micro SD with an adaptor.

Micro SD with an adaptor in my experience works fine, but I recommend the full sized one. You want to eliminate points of failure as much as possible.

      • 64mb -> 64gb
the price of SanDisk Extreme seems much higher than Samsung EVO+ which is also UHS-I U3

We would like to let you know that we have received an update from our Management team that this order will be cancelled and you will be automatically refunded for the cash or points used for the purchase, as we have reason to believe that the promo code used for this purchase QANTASSTAFF is INVALID and was acquired from unknown sources circulated from the website.

We'll be sending update to all affected member's order within the next 3-5 business days.

    • And now we will cry….
