Ryobi 18V ONE+ 4.0ah Brushless Line Trimmer Kit $269 @ Ryobi (Price Match at Bunnings Special Orders Desk)

290

Needed a new line trimmer, and couldn't wait until the mid-spring sales arrive. The Ryobi 18V Brushless trimmer kit (I don't have any other Ryobi battery tools) looked good and around my budget, but wasn't available at my local Bunnings (and I later found out, no Bunnings - it's a future mid-spring (Oct/Nov) sale item apparently).
To buy the same kit separately at Bunnings currently will cost $344 - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-brushless-line-tri… and https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-4-0ah-battery-and-…

I asked at the Special Orders counter if they would price match the $269 using the Ryobi URL as comparison, and they agreed/authorised. Use enquiry ref. 301839849 at your local Bunnings if they need to lookup the price match was previously given, the assistant told me it should be available at any Bunnings Special orders desk.

That's pretty powerful, and a big arse battery to go with it. I think I got a Ryobi one for about $80 some time, and the battery that came with it was very small, but I use the decent batteries from my other tools and have that one as a spare for other stuff. Gets the job done but I'd love this big nasty one.

If you havent bought into an ecosystem yet, just be aware that you can convert almost any of the other packs into a one+ pack using an adapter, but the reverse is not true.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AEG-Battery-Adapter-to-Ryobi-18v…

This is because the one+ packs have the sticky-out piece with the terminals on it, whereas most other packs have the slide in flat pack interface.

Either way Im pretty sure the AEG kit was cheaper than this (or more tools and packs for your money). Exact same line trimmer but better battery pack design.

    • I'm always hesitant with these types of things, as battery technology and chips may vary by brand and size.

      • Fear not. The tools are almost always just dumb loads. So the pack doesnt care what its powering. Its the charger where the pack electronics comes in, and you would be using the correct charger.

        • I disagree, what happens when certain tools are more demanding. From what I've been told and like you mentioned all the brains is in the battery and I wouldn't mix them.
Some tool brands have the chips build into the tools are the batteries are simply just power

          • @DannyBoy: The packs have voltage, current and temperature monitoring, and they disconnect the load if its too much for the pack. Thats basically the whole reason the pack electronics exist.

Also the whole reason for ecosystem was to move the electronics out of the tools and into the common pack to make the tools cheaper.

            • @stumo: Hhhmmm I guess there's only one way to find out.
I've always wanted to make up a DC to DC converter to use on all my Ryobi batteries and run a small inverter but never got around to it

              • +2

@DannyBoy: I already use them to top up my house battery in my campervan. I just plug them in to my solar regulator in place of the solar panels and away they go. The 5Ah packs cut out at about 700W.

                • @stumo: good to know. Whats your experience with the 4ah? and have you used them in parallel?

                  • @DannyBoy: I only have 1 4Ah one+. It its cutoff is around 600W. I have used 2x 5Ah one+ packs in series for my 36V lawnmower application.

I would avoid using these in parallel unless they were both the exact same amount of charge. Otherwise one of the packs would be trying to charge the other and it might not like that.

  • You can get the Honda ums425 for similar price
    https://www.oakleighmowerpower.com.au/product/ums425-bent-sh…

    • +2

They're not in the same category to be honest + not many people opt for bent shaft anymore.

Also, the Honda one being fuel and this Ryobi is battery powered after all.

      • Yes, some ppl prefer straight shaft, but they are both line trimmers for domestic use, Honda model I linked is considered the best domestic line trimmer

How many products have 4 star avg on product review?

        • +4

I never disagreed if they are both line trimmers or not.

You seemed to have missed the point where I said, this one is battery, the Honda is fuel - some people want battery which is why they'd be interested in this.

Quoting Product Review is like pissing into the wind, it's pretty useless.

@mlburnian: Spoken like someone that hasn't actually used this equipment, or any of the higher end battery based equipment that provides 80v+ like AEG and Victa.

I did away with fuel based trimmers a while back and wouldn't bother going back to them for my use case any time soon, mate.

  • Out of curiosity, does anyone know what's the difference between this one and the old Ryobi One+ line trimmer kit @ https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-5-0ah-line-trimmer… for $229

The only differences I can see is this one is newer and this one is a 2.0mm instead of a 1.6mm head.
Does that really change that much that you'd pay more and lose 1Ah from the battery (old one is 5Ah and new is 4Ah) as well as the price difference of $40?

    • +2

The older one is a single 1.6mm line coming from the head (from memory) - the newer one has the line coming from both sides, and it's thicker at 2mm as you noted. Thin line will drive you nuts unless you have fine grass.

The newer one is also a brushless motor which has some big gains in performance and lower power usage.

I looked for a brushless version at many different Bunnings stores, ended up being a lengthy trip just to get it.

    • +1

I have had both and in practice they are in different leagues. I found the non brushless one to be disappointing at best where this model is almost enjoyable to use. Heaps of power and the convenience of batteries is great. I have a four stoke Honda line trimmer that will be going on gumtree soon as it hasn’t been used since owning the brushless ryobi model.

      • +1

Yep I have both. This one makes the old non-brushless trimmer seem like a kids toy.

    • This one is Brushless, and the other one isn't.

  • Isn't the 36V version better value for $30 more?
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-2-6ah-curved-shaft-lin…

2.6Ah battery but equates to more Wh at twice the voltage compared to the 18V/4ah version. Is the curved vs straight shaft that much of an added expense as the straight version of the 36V trimmer is abother $100.

    • It depends I've got a huge 18v lineup of Ryobi stuff and I wouldn't be changing or investing in the 36v range

    • The 18v is brushless while that particular 36v is brushed, which should mean the 18v uses the power it has available more efficiently than the entry level 36v trimmer. The straight shaft brushless 36v trimmer for $399 is more directly comparable.

    • +1

      Curved shaft or bent shaft? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      • Both 🤨

  • I have one of these brushless whipper-snippers, they are great. That battery will only do the front yard of a house. Jump at it if you have a spare supplementary 5aH 18V battery.

    • +1

For my use case, a new 4ah (2018) battery will do my front and back yard. My old, worn out 4ah (2013) battery will only do 3/4 of the front yard.

Maybe you have a worn out battery, or I assume a large property?

I've got this kit, and it's awesome! I manage to get all my edging and fences done on a single charge (600m2 odd shaped yard)… before buying I was a little concerned with performance moving away from my petrol trimmer, and because I've had their original line trimmer (the one with a single line, and it was rubbish), but this is so much more powerful.

There were some good YouTube reviews that turned me, and I'm glad they did, I'd happily but another if something happened to mine.

    • May I ask how you edge your lawn with this model, please?

I am searching a line trimmer, and noticed some can convert to trim edge (with wheel thing, sorry don't know how to say it).

      • +1

"Edger" is the term you're after. Some people turn the line trimmer on its side, but the edgers are much better as they have a metal blade vs the line.

      • yeah, I just angle it sideways, I think there is a similar version that takes separate attachments, including an edger with wheel, but I don't think this one can take them (although there are screws half way down the shaft, looks like it potentially could have)

I am wondering while I have solely invested in ozito so far, would I be better off with this one or the 2x18v ozito trimmer that seems not too bad either. I understand this one is brush less, but any help is really appreciated especially if someone used both and have hands on experience.

    • I checked them both out last night. The Ryobi seems better built and I swear it felt lighter but online specs have the Ozito 100gm lighter. Tempted to get the Ryobi one, even though I have 7 Ozito 18V tools and 3 batteries (I also have a Ryobi 18V blower and 5.0A battery lol).

      • I probably have the same amount of ozito tools maybe a bit more mix of batteries. So it's gonna be more flexibility with all batteries I have stacked over time. But really tempted to try the ryobi one given the reviews. Having said that the ozito one seems to have great reviews too, if not mistaken this is the similar product under different brand name (https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B078GLDB74)

Very tempting to move away from mixing fuels to just charging a battery

    • Yes it's great, having easy to swap batteries with LED gauge makes it nice too. Also if you're on solar and charge during the day - consider it free!

My local Bunnings has this on the shelf at $269 with price last updated in June?

    • Are you in VIC? See my post below. Guy thinks they 'test' deals in VIC

  • I got denied! Guy just wouldn't honor it.
Said it's a test price in their system. Not available as a kit in stock so can't sell (even though both items are in stock separately)

    • The test price is the Ryobi package/kit in their computer. This was buying the trimmer and battery separately (seperate items in there computer) and getting them to price match the kit's price.
Did you ask at the Special Orders desk, and supply the reference number in OP (apparently you also need to know it was the Mentone, VIC store for them to lookup the enquiry/sale in their computer) for them to compare?
I'm sorry your store wouldn't offer the same deal.

      • No worries mate. I was at Special Orders desk and tried everything inc the ref number to get them to agree but they were having none of it.
It all worked out for the best and the next day those crazy Ryobi prices came in so I got this line trimmer, blower battery and charger for $306 so blower was $36 on top of this deal price.
        Love them both!

  • Update to my post above: phoned Ryobi, confirmed it's limited stock promotion so they sell a set number to Bunnings who then allocate to a few stores.
Everywhere else doesn't get access to it
