  • Looking for travel insurance for a SEA (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and 2 more potential trips within the next 6 months. Budget Direct seem to be the cheapest ($154 annual with 20% discount) and have no idea why… TID is $154 for just a single trip and $556 for annual. Any issues with either company?

    • I've found TID good when I've needed to claim

i claimed car insurance (my fauult) with budget direct- no problems, they sorted it out, just one call.

    • I was snowboarding in Japan earlier this year. Slipped on some uneven ice and broke my ankle walking around town.
I had a policy with TID and contacted their emergency assistance line. Weren't much help with sourcing medical assistance (English speaking). I ended up just getting physio reports that they then signed off on and gave me an approval number. Kept all my receipts and sent them in when I returned. Had money for all expenses and the remaining week's costs of my trip back in my account 3 days after lodging my claim.

For those without local private health cover though. Get as much treatment done whilst overseas possible (unless there is inherent danger in that) because once you're home their responsibility ends. I was fortunate to narrowly avoid surgery on my ankle so it was a few scans and visits to physio's/doctor's covered mostly by my private health.

      • Physio report from Japan? Are they easy to find?

        • Most main mountain resorts have, as it happens, Australian run Physio offices.

      • Is that with TID or BudgetDirect?

  • Anyone actually claimed with these

Who are they under written by?

    • Yep but not recently and they may be underwritten by a different crowd now - AXA. Years ago my baggage was delayed en route from Perth to Queenstown in winter - all I had was the clothes I was wearing. As a result I incurred costs in purchasing 'essential clothing'. In this case, a $350 RAB jacket. No probs at all with TID - they paid for it all. Was the best feeling walking into that expensive ski shop and leaving my bargaining hat at the door. Still using that jacket today.

  • A quick look at the bottom of the first page of TID says this : This insurance is underwritten by XL Insurance Company SE, Australia branch (ABN 36 083 570 441). Underwritten by AXA.

  • The bargainer on me wants to wait for the 25% offer. Comes around once an year I think.

    • I generally keep an eye TID prices and I have not seen 25% off. I’ve been using them for years and I have never needed to make a claim to test them. Doing a search on here does not show a 25%. Do you have a link for 25% off from the past?

  • I had a bad experience with TID.

There was an earthquake in Japan last year and I couldn't travel from Tokyo to Osaka due to damage on the train system.

This resulted in me also not being able to check in my Osaka hotel.

TID advised me the train company and hotel should compensate me if it was impacted by the earthquake, not them.

TID also requested I get written evidence from the train and hotel companies advising they won't cover me before they would even look into my claim.

What's the point of having travel insurance when they're not covering these scenarios.

My work colleague used their credit card travel insurance with the same scenario and no problems claiming.

I advise you to contact any travel insurance with a few scenarios and how they go about compensation eg., like my scenario.

So ring and ask them about every hypothetical scenario you can think of to check their coverage. Righto.

      • @Mike83 As per my last sentence in my original comment "a FEW scenarios and how they go about compensation eg., like my scenario.".

This is to gauge a general understanding what they do/don't cover, and also the simple/complicated claim process.

You are free to ask about every hypothetical scenario if you like, righto

Does that consider natural disaster? I understand some companies don't cover them?

        @jonkl

I advise you to ask the travel insurance company if they cover this.

As stated in my original comment "My work colleague used their credit card travel insurance with the same scenario and no problems claiming."
