2902

Clarification: Follow the referral link (below this post, under "Referral Links"), sign up (has to be a new account), get your free credit score (Experian) and receive a $5 Wish gift card. If you refer a friend after that, you get another $5 (your friend will also get $5 for signing up.

I used this deal last time it was around and received the gift card, both when I signed up and when I referred a friend. No spam so far (only a notification Email when there is a change to my credit score, which I find useful).

Please note: apparently only works if this is a new Finder account on the email address you are signing up from. Thanks for the heads up @bamzero

Some reading on why you should check and keep an eye on your credit score:

Just a shame that these companies use the info to market to you and sell your data to others for the same reason.

Also given very few lenders etc use scores they pretty much a non starter in most cases.

      • +3

Yeah, in the US, credit scores are important. You can’t rent, get a car lease, or even buy a post-paid mobile phone without a good score. People seem to know their score off the top of their head.

You need to constantly be aware of your score, challenge any discrepancies, and minimise any activities that impact it.

But here it’s a non-issue. I’ve never given a second thought about credit scores, and I’ve never been denied credit for anything or has any issues with rentals or phone contracts. That’s a big difference to the US, where landlords would advertise “people with a score under 700 need not apply”.

  • +7

Why is finder giving away $$ for people looking up a credit score. Not seeing the reasoning behind this.

    • +5

Once you have your score, finder would send you targeted products?

      • +2

I opted out during sign up, never received any from them. Just credit score related notifications.

        • +5

Not yet. It will hit you when you forget.

    • +6

My guess is that they may capture your attention with other deals going on on their website (credit card sign up, etc.). Also, effectively you create an account with them through the progress which looks good on their books.

      • Yup.

Complete your profile to track your comparisons, access exclusive discounts, and check your credit score with one click.

    • +1

Encourages people to use their other products, essentially cheap advertising

    • It may also give them information on some people they didn't previously have.

    • DONT fill it out If u owe debts and are in hiding

This is a great way to find outstanding debtors

  • +5

Thanks OP! Just signed up through the referral link, enjoy the $5 gift card whoever's link it was :)

    • +2

I got a $5 gift card just over an hour ago so I’ll say thanks in case.

  • We'll give you a fiver to spam you?

    • +13

I already get spam, at least I get paid.

  • +2

Don't forget for those signing up, use the random referral link from Ozbargain. Those that have signed up, remember to add your referral link by clicking edit above (in the referral links grey box) :)

Be careful on the information you hand over to these companies. Often you submitting your data this way will create a credit file in your name for data they can use/sell.

These companies aren't exempt from data breaches like equifax (competitor to this) had in 2017.

Your data is worth more than $5 by selling your name and contact details in marketing lists. You agree to this in the T's and c's

    • -3

How much is my data worth?
I'll. Happily sell it and become Fred Jones instead

    • Often you submitting your data this way will create a credit file in your name for data they can use/sell.

      Your credit file already exists.

Websites like Finder are just accessing and showing you what your file has in it.

      • +1

Your credit file does not always exist.

Often kids (18+) haven't applied for credit - meaning there is no file. You open a credit file when you first apply for credit (or check your score in this scenario) creating a file.

These guys can't hold information on people under 18. Finder pass the details provided to the credit bureau to match data - either it matches an existing file (and the score is shown) or a new one is created and a score generated based on demographic details provided like suburb /age /gender etc..

Additionally experian is the smaller bureau meaning they likely don't have your details. Them offering $5 per person is indicating they're in need of some names to sell

    • +1

Exactly !!!! Be careful guys , your data name etc will now be kept and used …

  • Free $5 Woolworths WISH Gift Card for Getting a Free Credit Score from Finder

Is this true? I can't see it listed on the page. I know you get $5 for referring a friend, but can't see mention of the $5 for signing up.

    • Should be true since it's in the OzB referral system as well?

    • Got my $5 gc pretty much instantly just click through the referral link (OP or random).

      • Thanks, also received with mine! I would recommend others to also use a referral link from ozbargain to guarantee you get both.

    • This. OP tldr - needs fixing to be:

Use referral link for first $5. Refer a friend for extra $5 each

      Pretty much delete everything else.

      I shanked it too :/

  • Signed up and got my credit score. Also used the referral link. Where does the gift card come from. Does it get emailed out?

    • +1

Yes, it gets Emailed out. Looking at the Emails from when I signed up, it took about half an hour.

      • +1

        I got mine immediately.

  • So that they can sell your informationstudy human behavior for academic purposes!

    • No, they sell it to debt companies

For eg there is going to be someone on here who owes credit card debt and is in hiding, guess what, they are found them now

  • +1

Had to open the page in Edge to get my referral code because it's a popup.

Disable your adblocker if you're clicking a button and getting nothing.

  • +1

    Cheers OP :)

  • +4

    Thanks OP.

Used the random referral link. I recommend everyone do the same and add their own after.

    • Yep I did that too. Hope someone enjoys it :)

  • ID not recognized

    • Happened to me too on my drivers licence. I gave up and used my passport instead.

  • How do you get the $5?

    • +1

Once you've done the credit score you will get an email from Finder with a link to the gift card.

      • Yep! Just got it, there was a small delay. Thanks

  • +2

Confirmed this works. GC comes soon after registration.

  • +2

Weird. I didn't get the gift card.

    • +1

Mine didn't come through either :(

    • Was it a new Finder account? I don't think it works on existing accounts even if you haven't signed up for the credit score yet.

      • Yes. New account. Signed up. Checked spam, nothing
        Oh well

      • No I had a Finder account already… please update OP as I wouldn't have done it otherwise :( I want my info back…

        • The credit score page and the T&C's kind of contradict each other.

On the one hand, the credit score page says
"Get your credit score and comprehensive report now for free. Be rewarded with a $5 gift card every time a friend gets theirs."
and doesn't say anything about being a new registered account.

          yet the T&C's say
"Finder's "refer a friend" promotion provides Woolworths' WISH Gift Cards to registered users who recommend finder.com.au to people that subsequently become registered users. Each successful referrer will receive a $5 credit for each successful referral."
and doesn't even mention the need to get a credit score, just become a Finder registered user.

  • Just did it. Hopefully I get the email soon as I saw no mention of the gift card anywhere throughout me selling my personal data process.

  • my credit score was 769. not bad..

  • Used random affiliate link from post - entered my own in the pool as well. Thanks!

  • +1

Newbie question, does registering for one of these free credit reporting servces hit your credit score snce the service WILL query your data?, Also when u cancel a credit card, does it hit your score since the bank will update your data in the database?, Cheers

    • +1

No, no impact for checking - asking about your credit score is fine, it's mainly applying for credit or failing to pay for credit that impacts it.

No major negative impact for cancelling, not like an application for credit. Probably no change, possibly some small improvement for having a reduced level of available credit limits, possibly some small negative as they can't tell if you cancelled it or it was cancelled by the issuer. Basically assume no impact.

  • +1

Got mine in around 20 minutes.

  • +10

Jokes on them, I value my private data a lot less then $5.

  • Got my giftcard, thanks OP

  • +2

Ask yourself before you apply for this, is sharing your real name, DOB, address, email and other details really worth $5.

Do you know how finder stores and uses your information?

They will also gain access to some of your financial information.

Most banks have their own lending criteria and credit scores play a small role in the final decision

    • +2

I’d do a lot more for less 😉

  • 821 score, good stuff..I think?

    What is everyone else getting?

    • I got 814. I'm interested in knowing what people get from credit card churning for points.

      • +2

Doesn't seem to have much impact - also 814 and I've had a lot of cards in the last few years, and a currently insane combined credit limit. I do have a perfect repayment history on everything though, so that possibly offsets some of it.

    • 731.
What's the lowest someone here will get?
      Mine's apparently "very good".

  • +1

It has been 30 minutes since I got my free credit score report but haven't received the gift card yet. Anyone else had the same problem?

    • +1

Same here. Its been almost an hour. Signed up at 4.05pm

    • yes, with hotmail email account. Spoke to chat and they said up to 48 hours. The person who referred me got theirs immediately as well as their referral credit. So they are up $10 in vouchers.

  • Looks like 200x gift cards max will be issued so after 726 clicks they might be out of them.

    • +4

That's 200 referrals per person max, total cards is undisclosed.

  • +1

Since this can stack to a grand, I think OP is gonna be shopping for free for a couple months. Cheers, dude.

    • +1

The referral system is random. Any one of the 228 people (Currently) can receive the referral gift card

      • +4

You can pick random, or you can pick OP.

And I clicked OP's, since OP is the dude who scored me a fiver.

        • ahh you're right
I couldnt see the 2 options (OP or random) on my laptop but on my mobile I can.. strange

        • Cheers DukeOfNukem. That nick takes me back to 1991

  • +1

thanks - voucher emailed within 2 minutes of signing up

  • This gives only experian score which most of the financial institution don't refer too.
Equifax score is what needs to be looked at.

    • FWIW, my Experian credit report detail had the same info as the Equifax report.

      • Same details but different scores. I don't know how that's possible.
I checked in wisr and saw different scores for me in experian and equifax.

        • I just checked the credit report Equifax sent me, and they didn't actually issue me a numeric score. I requested it directly from them here

          More info regarding scores:

Average credit scores vary across scorers because they're calculated differently by different financial entities. It's unlikely you'll ever find out your score from a credit provider – all you'll know is the pass or fail result after a credit application.

Depending on the agency used, your score will be a number between zero and 1200. For example, according to Australia's largest credit bureau, Equifax, whose system runs from one to 1200 (some others run to 1000), the average Equifax credit score for an Australian in 2016 was 757.

Thanks OzB, received two referrals this arvo from last time around. Keep clicking :D

  • +2

If anyone is having issues clicking the "refer now" button in your Finder account, try disabling uBlock Origin. It seems overly keen in blocking JavaScript on the website…

  • +2

    Quickest $5 I got
    Thanks OP

  • +1

I’ve already sold my details to you (missed 5 bucks)

  • -2

    This isn't exactly free .
I believe your credit score goes down each time you do a 'credit check . So you are most likely reducing your credit rating somewhat, by taking up this offer.
I'm borderline on whether or not I will be approved for a phone plan (someone ran up electric bill years ago, and I refused to pay it when the company hounded me). So I don't want to risk it with this. Even Vodafone told me not to get credit check until the time I actually want to get the phone plan, because checking it hurts your credit rating.

    • +8

Your credit score only goes down when a lender checks your credit score, i.e. credit inquiry on your file. If you check it yourself, you won't hurt it

      • Are you sure ?
I don't want to screw myself when I apply for postpaid plan soon. I have the latest samsung LTE smart watch, so I am forced to switch off prepaid else the telcos won't connect my watch 🤔

        • +3

Yes, we're sure. Checking your credit score does not affect your score.

      • Why does it decrease when lender performs a check?

  • completed a credit check. did not receive the egift card…

    • Seems to take up to half an hour from earlier reports

      • I got mine in less than 30 seconds so check junk maybe?

      • +1

i click on your erd refer link. sign up email then verify the email and personal detail. completed the credit report, got a credit score. then wait and nothing. over 1 hour

        • A friend of mine signed up about 10 mins ago and his apparently arrived ok. I would email them

          • @erd: They wanted email address of referrer.

            • @Sweet3st: I'm in same boat… and I clicked random so have no idea who referred me.

            • @Sweet3st: DMed you the details

  • +2

Waited an hour, checked junk, nothing.

    • A friend of mine signed up about 10 mins ago and his apparently arrived ok. I would email / live chat them
