Would be risky to be charged $10 extra for 2 GB data.

    • +3

switch the data access off on the phone - will only access via WiFi

    • Why would it be risky. It is an add on. If you don't want any data you just don't add it on.

      • I think their assumption is it autobills if you use data, is this not correct?

        • You can disable auto topup.

          • +2

@cute as duck: Does that include disabling auto excess charges…?

            https://www.dodo.com/mobile/monthly-mobile-plans/sim-only-pl…

            Says $10/GB here.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Once your data runs out you have no further data for that month. If you want to add on extra data it is $10 per gb. It is a prepaid service not a postpaid service so if you use up data you will need to purchase further data for that month or until next recharge.

                • +7

@[Deactivated]: Actually sorry dyl you might be correct. I went into the Critical information PDF and it says it is a post paid plan. Therefore my understanding is what you had initially said.

                  Sorry to have confused you!

For everyone else, this is a major thing that is omitted unless you go to the Critical information PDF!

                  • +2

@cute as duck: Yeah, it seemed very hard to find imo. I was only sceptical after digging down to the page I linked above.

If there's some way to completely disable data and extras, it's a great plan. Without that, not so much.

                    Edit:

I did just note critical information summary does say:

                    Excess data charges: N/A

To me this indicates data IS disabled.

              • @cute as duck: Incorect!
                Read thier CIS. Quote:
This is a Post-Paid mobile phone service. …….
Excess data will be automatically charged at $10 per additional GB

                See here for full details:

      No data no deal

    • No data
      or
      2GB for +$10/mth extra

    • Mostly likely people will use this sim for back to base alarm backup..

  • +1

Yep, I'd say that's where they're making their money. On the data as an add-on.

  • +7

Thanks OP, this is perfect for my grandma.

    • +2

Belong is $10 if she needs data.

      • +8

She's 95… has a flip phone and can only make calls using speed dials so this is good enough for her :D

    • +1

      Same here! Thanks OP!

  • +14

This is actually really good for my situation. I have a 12yr old that I want to be able to call/text me when urgent but don't want her using the internet unsupervised.

    • +6

May be Aldi sim better for you

      • Which plan?

    • +7

Prepaid would be safer as there are some horror billshock tales involving kids and postpaid plans. It's postpaid and MMS are 50c not included. If they send lots of SMS using emoji that some phones send as MMS it could be expensive. Some kids can easily send over 1000 SMS a month if they think it's free.

If you get them a dumb phone with no data or MMS capability it would be less risky and the battery would last weeks.

      • Any nokia old phone would be fine-no one would bother browsing the internet on these things plus she can use it as a brick.

        • +2

Problem is most old Nokias can only use 2G network which no longer exists. Need a new 'old' Nokia.

          • @TheZohan: I got this one for my non-tech savvy Dad a few months back when he just needed a phone to primarily receive calls between home and hospital…

            https://www.kmart.com.au/product/konka-ku9-smartphone---blac…

Konka KU9; easy to use, lightweight and resembles an old Nokia, was $49 or $39 (can't remember) on special from K-Mart, unlocked. Used a Aldi sim with $15 PAYG credit and it's great… He uses like 95 cents credit per month but can do what he needs and we can find out where he is.

          • @TheZohan: Even the new 3G dumb phones are becomeing useless as all the Telcos refarm thier 3G frequencies to 4G.
            Here is whats left:
            Telstra 850. Vodafone 900, Optus 900 (and maybe 2100)
Telstra plan to shut 3G down by end of 2020
Others will follow soon after. See here

What about the Aldi 12 month pack or boost? Both on Telstra which was a factor for me since work phone is optus

  • Mis read OP

  • +12

If anyone wants a small amount of data for kids but neever wants them to go over or even have NO internet when it runs out go with belong mobile. $10pm, telstra network and when out of data slows down to 64Kbps (perfect for whatsapp text and calls, imessage, find my iphone, basic email and web)

    • +8

slowing down once data has run out should be the norm for all networks !

      • +3

yeah telstra and Voda do this to a more usable 1.5mbps but other companies that instantly add $10 or cut it completely is stupid.

    • And if you have another, larger belong plan you can gift some data if need be.

  • +1

Dodo I thought they died years ago.

    • +9

I told my friends about One.tel

    • +2

      You mean extinct

  • Good deal thanks

  • EDIT: I just found the answer to my own question :-\

  • perfect for pops, unhapy about the $2.50 direct debit fee per month

    • +1

Do with Belong for $10 which also has 1gb of data with no excess data charges.

    • Use credit/debit card.

You can pay your service by direct debit from either your credit card (no additional fees apply) or your bank account ($2.50 processing fee applies per transaction).

This seems to be better deal if you need to add data anyway
    https://www.spintel.net.au/home/mobile
    $9.95
    Per Month
    2GB
    100 minutes
    Unlimited text

    $15.95
    Per Month
    5GB
    Unlimited calls
    Unlimited text

  • Even without Data switched on, sporadic data charges occur with many ISPs.
Eg. TPG have ripped me off badly in this area, as much as $20 to $30 per month on PAYG, so beware as Dodo are the worst ISP ever in my experience. Suggest stay clear.

    • Not sure how you can be charged if you don’t purchase the extra for data… data pack is an add-on

  • It's not related with this deal, but for bill shock, there's a topic about OnePlus's system problem here
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/479063

    • CIS says N/A for excess data - it may be fully disabled.

  • +4

    Let me get this right.

    $5 ONLY calls/texts NO DATA.

In the Critical information summary it clearly state Excess Data N/A which mean we won't be charge for data because it is not included in the first place.

So then why a few guys above keep saying we get charge for excess data??

    • +1

Because in postpaid plans you get charged for using the extra service.

It shouldn't be an issue to just keep mobile data off, but there's been stories of Google/android and carriers ignoring that and use data for who knows what.

    • +1

Personally didn't notice this in CIS until just now.

That does indicate data should be disabled.

    • +1

I had the rep at dodo kiosk called the support service, they said data is not enabled for $5 plan unless you add on data service.

  • +7

Someone finally did it. Waited until most of the technologically illiterate died off and finally gave their souls the option to pay a fair market price for what they actually use.

I basically use my dual sim phone with an aldi 99 sim for my main number, and whatever cheap sims are on sale for data. Works well, although some mms I try to send from my main take ages/don't work. Sms/calls work fine. Optus network if that works for you.

    • With duel sim can I have my main sim access the data there and only receive calls make calls from the dodo sim, how does that work?

      • Yes you can, for call/sms/Internet you set which sim to use by default

        • Yep, that's it. Just turn off data for the dodo sim.

  • Now we just need no expiry data sims at a good value. lol.

    • Ovo mobile or Optus. Optus is 85 a month for 500gb

  • Call Diversion/Forwarding is included in the $5/month according to Dodo customer service. But they didn't sound very confident when I asked. Can anyone confirm YES/NO?

    • Want to know this as well, if yes, then really good deal.

    • Contacted them and they stated it was $6 a month. A few months ago when I asked they said it was free.

  • Cheers OP ;)

  • did anyone manage to get the $25 refferal credit?

  • I wanted to like this, but only when halfway through the application process they told they gonna credit check me I realised this is a trap. It is postpaid and is bound to end bad with crazy excess charges and exorbitant fees as it was with Vaya.

    • Of course its post-paid man!

How do you thing they charge you for the extras such as data use???

BTW I never had problems with Vaya. No different to Optus, Virgin, Voda, Telstra. In fact I found Vaya much better.
Its more often the user thats made the error then blaming the Telco.
Just like Idq is doing here right now.

People like Idq need to sick with pre-paid.

For the record, so do I !

      • From everything i have read Data is not included. So how do they charge extra for something that is not included?

  • 13xxxx numbers included?

  • Hmmmm tempted, I dual sim with work sim that has 50GB of data/month, but I want to be confident that for $5 a month I'll never be charged extra (i.e. trying to send/receive MMS or use data would just block me).

    • Just check to see if you can turn off any extra charges or data etc

  • Signed up my old folks the other day - amazing deal

No chance of running up extra costs because no data is included.

just hooked them up to the wifi for data.

She was on aldi previously, and was topping up twice a month, for about $40 a month.

  • Hi everyone,

I just signed up for this $5/month plan thinking it is PREPAID.

Considering this is a POSTPAID service, if someone on a $5/month DODO plan sends an sms with an emoji, is it is considered an MMS? Will it be charged to your monthly bill?

BEWARE ******** Excess data is no longer N/A
    Under plan information https://www.dodo.com/mobile/monthly-mobile-plans/sim-only-pl…?
Excess data charges: $10 per GB

Also, How does one cancel the service? By porting to another telco? Or do we also have to contact DODO?

  • this is perfect for the data + calling dual sim situation
