Clarion FX688A HD Android Auto/Apple Carplay Double DIN Head Unit - $489 Shipped @ Automotive Superstore

140

Thought this was a fantastic price for a Android Auto/CarPlay head unit that has a 720p HD display and capacitive touch.

Anything around this price is likely to be 480p and resistive touch.

I price matched at AutoBarn much to the frustration of the staff.

To see whats required to fit this to your vehicle, go to www.aerpro.com and search for your model.

Would be nice if it had an optical drive.

    • RIP to USB, no issues!

Anyone knows what it would cost to get something like this built into a 2011 Hyundai? Not sure I'm game to try on my own.

See description. Find the Aerpro pieces you need and the estimate a couple hundred for install.

      Worth every cent!

    • You can check youtube for an idea of the installation. Install should be 1-2 hours. As mentioned check the Aerpro website you can enter the car/headunit and it'll show you available adapters. If you need a custom fascia shop around (eg; Metra saved me $160~ on a recent install)

Just be careful with the metra fascias. I upgraded my 2012 Hyundai about 12 months ago and the fascia has substantially warped when parked in a sunny spot.

        • My Metra fascia (Mazda 3 2012) never has that issue. It does get easily scratched due to the rubbery coating which it tries to match the Mazda's interior but other than that it's fine.

  • Can this change the colour of the back light?

  • I'd love to upgrade my older Clarion unit but I just love rotary volume control too much😁

    • Sony XAV-AX100 has rotary still but is nowhere near as nice as this according to specs anyway.

I have both but won't get around to installing this for a week or so.

  • Phone needs to be connected w. Cable for Android auto to work right?

    • Yep, lots of reports of wireless AA being terrible anyway unfortunately. I plug into centre console and hide my phone so I'm not tempted to pick it up.

    • Because I have to plug my phone into it, I no longer need to charge it at home. It's actually a bonus

      • /s

        • No, I mean I actually love it. I gave my 2 phone chargers to my wife so she can have one at work and leave another downstairs in the kitchen. Her pixel 2 has garbage battery life.. my umidigi only needs to be plugged into my android auto unit for an hour or so each workday to stay full

AutoBarn currently selling this for $389

    https://www.autobarn.com.au/me27092

Also found Clarion Australia site mentioned this came with resistive touch.

    https://www.clarion.com/au/en/products-personal/multimedia/F…

    • What on earth!

That's absolutely nuts.. hours after I heard the staff literally swearing about how Frankie's and online audio stores are f***ing the physical stores out of a job.

Edit: and it's listed as capacitive touch elsewhere.. FML

Pack it up boys, the world done hating me today.

I returned and re bought for 389, all's well that ends well.

        • Good on ya..I'm getting one today as well 😊👍

    • Good find! I've ordered one. I had been keen on the Sony ax3000 or 5000 but this has higher res. I had a different clarion unit previously so should still have the harness too.

For those that don't know, Android Auto has a new interface. Just go to settings and enable it.

  • Can't find much about these online, can anyone comment on how long it takes to boot and show the reverse camera? Also does it have a safety message you have to acknowledge each time? Might see if I can find one in a shop to play with.

    • +1

A few seconds to boot. And yes to safety message upon each boot. I don't have a reverse camera so can't comment on that.

      • I bought one in the end, can confirm the reverse camera is very fast, <5 seconds from key on (same or better than the factory HU in my car).

  • Unfortunately going to have to return mine tomorrow.
The home button and inbuilt microphone doesn't work - audio options were rather limited also.

    • That's no good!
