It’s hard to go back from $500 voucher, but still a good deal if you need a new plan.

    • Free $400gc with the ETC loophole is better than nothing.

      • ETC loop hole?

      • yes… what is this ETC loophole

  • +1

    Telstra in Title please

  • Damn ported out to get the $45/$200 deal

  • +8

    65 x 12 = 780

    780 - 400 = 380

    380 / 12 = $31.66 for 60GB/month (720GB/year) with unlimited calls/text

Arguably better value than the $300 for 12 months boost plan.

    • +23

Only works if you need $400 gift card at JB

      • +2

That’s true, but I don’t use O/S calls and since they mostly price match, almost everyone can do with something from an electronics store…

        • +25

Its enforced purchasing. I'd rather the cash in my pocket

          • @Bullion78: If I have to pay with G.C. then can't take advantage of Price insurance on CC either.
Better off selling the Gift card if possible for $350 cash.

    • +4

I make lot of international calls for work, so boost works out cheaper for me..

    • I'd add $40 as easy get JB cards 10% off as a base rate .

      • Not really for everyone though, if you don't have access to a good discount…

    • +7

Arguably better value than the $300 for 12 months boost plan.

you need to spend $400 with JB… It's not $400 cash.

      • You’re back <3

    • Had you joined in about 2 weeks ago, that cost would have been $340.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/481977

    • $400 GC is not equal to $400 cash

In other words, I cannot pay Telstra Bill with $400 GC.

  • Good deal.
I literally just yesterday nenegotiated for the 60gb plan, with POMD and international call pack, for $40 month.
    $480 a year, but $10 a month ($120)of that is the international calls. $360.
    Works out slightly cheaper.
I was waiting for another JB gift card deal for Telstra network….

    • Hey how do I do this? $30/pm for 60gb on Telstra?

      • +1

I have $35 with 50gb on Telstra, this was easy enough asking for a $10 portin credit.

Wouldn't mind knowing how to get it lower.

        • How does this work? Also better than boost for me

          • +10

@Bellpop: I used a little bit of social engineering when I applied for mine as it was after the offer ended.
Jump on chat, explain nicely that your previous chat dropped out and that you were offered a $10 a month credit for your account due to porting in.
Be really nice, lots of please and thank you's. They will put you on hold and speak to their manager, and in my case were more than happy to apply the credit for me.

If it fails you can just drop off and try again, just remember to be sugar sweet when speaking to them and they will want to help you out. If you are a jerk and demand it, odds are they will look for a reason to not help you out.

If challenged just explain you didn't get a reference number and when you were in the store they had offered it to you, and your previous chat were happy to apply it but it dropped off prior to applying it. You could even go down the route of saying it was applied but you just wanted to confirm it was active, this will also put them in a position of wanting to help.

      • I asked for the international call pack to be included and to increase my data.
It was a bit of an auction…but in the end, I got it. And no charge.
I was at work and it was quiet, so had the time to have the Telstra delayed chat

        • Do you do this before or after going into jb and signing up for the plan?

          • @lockmc: Also curious.

My kogan 365 is up next month and keen to drop back to Telstra now that I'm working regionally and having significantly more coverage issues.

            • @db87: Yep that's why I'm curious… My 365 is almost up!

          • @lockmc: I'm no where near a JB. And Telstra is the only network that actually works where I need to.
I had to negotiate directly with Telstra.
I'd rather pay less up front than have a JB gift card that I have to try hard to use.
I'd sign up to JB deal and the try to negotiate with Telstra if I could

            • @Spending2Much: That was my issue. I didn't have the time to make it into JB so had to leave work early today, BUT I do have someone that will use the $500 and give me the cash so a much easier effort. I'll just renegotiate in 12 months.

Lockmc, lost 28 days on my kogan and about 20 ish gig but for the extra $100 GC it was a no brainier when my kogan account equated to $23/m.

I'll ringing up for the port in credit tomorrow and trying my luck but happy either way. One thing I did note, is that there was a splash screen at the jb store once they clicked through all of their due processes and one of the pages had a big green DOs and red DON'Ts layout and port in credit was definitely in the red don'ts column! Good job to those that secured it.

  • +1

Do you need to go in store to do this

    • -1

Not sure how else you expect to?

      • Online or over the phone?

        • They never have.

          • +2

@scuderiarmani: They did have an online portal too but looks like it was taken down about a week and a half ago and all references to it removed from the jb site, it was hosted on the telstra website

      • +1

Yeah thanks it was just a question

        • -1

ID checks, credit check, contract explanations, signing contract, gift card, all done in person.

  • Can I then change it to the new no commitment plans?

    • Nope, that loophole has been closed. Would have to pay the $390 ETC.

      • Since when? I ported out on Tuesday

          • @burningrage: Good to know, thx

          • @burningrage: that would indicate you could possibly downgrade to the $45 plan though.

        • +1

Did you? I bet it still works. I feel there’s a lot of people that don’t like it being exploited. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t work anymore. I’m not sure why people get so annoyed at others about this one

          • @bluepop: It might still works, but definitely harder now as more JB and Telstra employees already aware of the loophole. But you are right, so many people are annoyed with people abusing this deal, then they tell fake news that the loophole was closed. It might be because those people want to keep this deal around for themselves then they try to make money out of it(just look at how many people selling JB gift card and huawei phone in Gumtree). If everyone know about this loophole, then those people can't make money out of it.

I just hope that the loophole doesn't cause Telstra rep who let people out of their contract lose their job.

For those who are interested in this deal just to get free gift, I think you better not because there are chances that you won't get away with it. But if you really keen to take up a new plan, then go for this and you might get lucky to move to month to month plan without penalty(even if you don't its still a good deal nevertheless).

            • @yummypinacolada: No longer possible to change to month on month without paying early termination fees.

              • @avendr: Are you sure? Well I dont really care, as I'm not planning to take the plan anyway.

Im just stating that lots of ppl here tried to tell fake news that the loophole was closed since months ago, where in reality lots of Telstra reps still let ppl get away without ETC back then. But even if its closed for real this time, its still a good deal nevertheless. You just can't cheat the system anymore.

  • A couple of questions if anyone could be so kind: can you sign up through a business account to this deal? And can you combine for data share at all? TIA.

    • This plan isn't available for data sharing as far as I know.

  • is this designed for plan + use gift card towards a handset?

    • No. It's a gift card to use for anything….

  • +5

Good Guys still have $200 voucher on the $45 plan.

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/telstra-mobile-and-broadband-…

  • I recently ported out of Telstra post paid and was going to sign up to a similar $45/mth $200 JB voucher. At JB I was told by staff that I had to wait for a month before I come back to use this deal.

Is one month waiting period true?

    • I don't believe so.

I was not asked that question when I wanted to port in (but changed my mind as the gift card value has dropped $100).

Besides, my porting in is legitimate. I had enough with Optus offering shitty interface and H+ coverage.

    • Yes

      • Will report back if I get asked that or not.

I am still tossing whether to go with Good Guys or JB

        • So I bit the bullet and went with JB $65 plan for $400. Its hard to think what to buy at Good Guys unless I need a new washing machine.

Did I wait for a month? No. I got ported in less than 5 minutes on a Sunday.

He did however asked me whether I have been with Telstra recently.

I didnt lie but the word "recently" is quite subjective so I just said not really and I really had a shitty service with Optus.

    • Depends on who you speak with at JB.
Some will allow it, some won't.

      • The JB's in wealthier suburbs just do it at a glance.

    • The waiting period is true, but they go as far as asking you. There are no systematic checks in place. Find another store, say it was more than 1 month and you’ll be sweet.

      • JB staff can see disconnection/port out dates on their systems as well.
It's just a matter of whether they cbf about the 30 days.

        • True I guess in most of my cases it was active with optus for a whole 30 minutes lol

    • Was also told there’s a 28 day waiting period otherwise they can’t issue the gift card.

They said the deal will probably still be around in a month though.

  • ported over from Optus, spending the 200AUD gift card for Airpods for the missus

  • +2

I’m a current Telstra customer and I’m porting out to a competitor, I’m doing this for no other reason than in anticipation of a deal like this being available in the future (as it may not be around in a month). Failing to reward loyal customers seems to be such an oversight. The deal should be for port ins or out of contract customers.

    • While you are right…. No company will reward someone whose reliably continuing on over a potential new income…

They give some data bonuses, not much else.

  • I thought (and could be wrong) the value of JB gift cards also depended on value of the handset. Eg, in the past on the $65/mth plan, if the handset is $999 you get $500, if it is lower you only get $300.

Is the $400 handset agnostic now?

    • They've always had gift card promos, several years atleast, the phone discounts are a more recent idea.

    • That deal only applies to the 24 month plan and only applies to a handset.

The 12 month plan (this deal) gives you an actual gift card which you can use on anything.

  • In theory, could I overpay this new Telstra account right on the spot at JB with the $400 voucher they would have just given me?

    • +2

      Nope, two different companies

      • Oh well. I thought they might be accepting bill payments on behalf of Telstra at the registers as they have a close partnership.

    • +1

Uh no. I don't believe so.

    • +8

      In theory, no.

      In practice, also no.

  • -7

this would've been $588 credit with 200 GB worth of data for 12 months; so not the cheapest.

    • +7

      What are you on about?

      • -5

        lol

  • +2

Bummed about the drop to $100 gift card on the $45 plan.

Was waiting until last week as I only had a month left on my current 2 year Virgin contract so I wouldn't have to pay out too much, but a busy week meant I couldn't get into a JB store after work. Wasn't too concerned as this deal had been around for a while so figured I'd just get it this week. Talk about bad timing.

Doesn't really seem worth it anymore. May consider the Good Guys offer instead but there's less I want to buy from there.

    • +1

Not really worth joining them for a $100 gift card, considering they are more expensive anyway by at least the value of the gift card per year. I'm on other carrier with contract up next month, but wouldn't bother porting into Telstra for less than the $200 JB gift card.

  • +1

Anyone know when the $65 per month is ending? Im just waiting for the Iphone announcement, before i make my decision on which phone to buy.

  • Can the voucher be used to for this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482027?
    Effectively getting the iPhone x for $199 ($599-$400) + $65/mth = total cost $979 for 12mths
    edit: re-read post

    • No, the initial price was $1079, but if you take the Telstra plan it will reduce the cost to $599 because they apply gift card for the rest.

    • Yes you most definitely can use this $400 gift card to pay off part of the $599. However, you will of course end up with two $65/month services. I used the $200 gift card from one service to pay off the $199 upfront fee off a similar JB phone deal.
