Free trial. That's the real bargain.

    • Thanks, changed deal to show this.

Will cashback pay me $8 dollars if I try?

  • +3

Not having a go, but won't this be the "standard trial" that all subs companies do? Just like Netflix, Stan, Spotify, etc.? Haven't seen anything to suggest it's a limited-time offer.

    • A$7.99 per month after free trial. Plan automatically renews after trial until cancelled.
    • Share your subscription with up to five family members (I'm really liking this part)
    • Ad-free and no additional purchases necessary (I wonder how long this will last?)

This part is rather incredible (in a great way)

Ad-free and no additional purchases necessary (I wonder how long this will last?)

This is by design. Apple is basically funding this. What we don't know is how much Apple paid these developers for exclusive titles upfront, how much is an ongoing subscription sharing arrangement.

As for additional purchase, mine would be PS4 Dualshock / Xbox One controllers!!

Since when is a trial bargain ?

iPhone 11 is over $400 cheaper than the XS in Australia with upgrades in all areas except for its lack of an OLED screen. Also cheaper than the XR launch price. $1200 for the standard 11 seems like a pretty good deal to me.

      • i believe the iphone x started at $999 usd and everyone made a meme out of it.

Now it at a reasonable $699, wait 69…

  • +16

Omg Better get the pro iphone pro for pro texts and pro calls. Smh. U want a charger that charges faster than one from ten years ago? That’s pro only sorry.

    • The worst part is people fall for it..

      • +6

        I’m one of them 😭

      • Lucky you're here to show people the light.

  • +12

    Oh yay, another subscription service!

    • Yep, much better than paying to keep since i dont rewatch movies or reply games after im done. This keeps the price low. And keeps new content coming.

      • +8

Um, paying to not keep is better than paying to keep? Um, come again?

From yesterday apple keynote "Apple failed their fans, Tim is a gold digger."

    • +2

I ain’t saying Tim Apple is a gold digger, but he ain’t messing with no broke ……

$2000 for iPhone 11 pro 256… that is MacBook Pro money, but in saying the MacBook Pro is a disappointment too, worst keyboard of any laptop, 8GB ram and 128gb ssd.

I ain’t saying Tim Apple is a gold digger, but he ain’t messing with no broke ……

        Broke what?

        • +9

          Buddy.

      • -2

What's bad about the keyboard? Note, I am typing on one right now.

        • +7

They're susceptible to failing at a rate which has prompted apple to put in a 5 year repair program covering the entire lineup, including adding laptop models to that repair program the same day they were released. They've also now done 3 iterations of the design to try and address the issues (with those revisions still being on the repair program straight away).

That's as an aside to the fact some people simply don't like the low key travel. Some people love that aspect but.

It also costs something like $500 plus to repair the keyboard out of warranty due to it basically needing half the chassis to be replaced.

          • @Smigit: Is it three or four iterations to fix it? I have lost count.
Regardless the cost to repair has been negated by the five year program. So that problem is much less. There is still the keyboard travel issue for some though.

            • @entropysbane: They’re on the 3.5 gen I believe, so I guess four? Unsure if the latest have the issues but launching with them in the repair program doesn’t scream confidence, although for PR they likely had to anyway.

As for the warranty, it definitely helps. That said my current MacBooks 8.5 years old. I’m not sure I’d keep my next one as long, but if I don’t I’d like that to be because I chose to upgrade not because the keyboard failed and couldn’t be replaced or cost $500 to do so. As it stands I’ll likely buy the 13” Pro released three months ago as the replacement for my old one so I guess I’ll be taking the gamble, mainly because I don’t want to wait until a hopefully 2020 refresh for that model. Will see what October’s likely Mac event bring first but.

              • @Smigit: Yes I am about to buy one of those. I was thinking of waiting until I see if anything comes out in October, but in the end figured it would be all iPads and high end MBP.

Don't sign up just yet… Cash rewards will most probably pay us to use it in a few months :)

I think when you have 100 games saying 8c a game is a bit of a laugh, can't really look at it this way, you can only play one game at a time. 24 cents a day is a better way, because it really represents what is actually happening.

Personally I don't find phone games that fun and stick to sucking at sodoku

Personally I don't find phone games that fun

Apple Arcade covers iPhones, iPod touches, iPads, Macs and Apple TV.

      • When people say 'phone' games they mean games that are aimed at the mobile crowd (ie all your named devices). There is a distinct flavour to them in contrast to dedicated console or PC games.

So really whether people find value here, is if you can honesty say you spend $8 a month on phone games. Because in general one-off fee premium games do poorly compared to free to play in-app purchase games.

It will be interesting to see if a re-bundling pricing scheme convinces the crowds to think otherwise.

        • I hope it works. I despise IAP and my kids hate me as I won’t let them buy a game with IAP.

“ but all my frieeends have it! I hate you!”

        • So really whether people find value here, is if you can honesty say you spend $8 a month on phone games. Because in general one-off fee premium games do poorly compared to free to play in-app purchase games.

Thats the issue for me though. They suck people into free games, but someone is paying cause they make more money and it just encourages more free to play games with IAP that are often clones of some other game rolling in the money . They get people addicted and try and milk as much as they can.

I've moved to a Nintendo Switch for "mobile" gaming now, just because the games are better and not another match 3 things clone, or wait 2 days to mine a resource clone. If Apple arcade actually brings good games to the system, then IMO its a good thing. Free to play mobile gaming is one of the worst things to ever happen in the tech world.

          • @Watto23: Part of my decision to not get the Switch Lite for $229 was because of Apple Arcade. Not a real gamer, but happy with cute and fun games to occupy the time, especially for the kids. Fact is time on gadgets are (should be) limited anyway.

    • Paired PS4 controller support peaked my interest

      • Candy crush with ps4 controller?

      • +4

        peaked my interest

        piqued

    • Half of the mobile games are "idle" games. People like levelling and growing without actually playing nowadays…??

  • +3

"Arcade" ? That's rich given how poor Apple's support has been for Controllers for gaming on iPhone.
I bought the SteelSeries Nimbus which was meant to be "the" Apple-compatible controller, only to find it works on Apple TV games but barely any decent iPhone/MFi games.

    Imagine paying for mobile shit

    • I just did.. sounds like a sweet deal.

  • It’s $5.99/month in Canada which converts to AUD~$6.33. Dare say other countries will be cheaper when they rolled out later this year.

    • +3

Don’t forget that prices in US/Canada don’t include sales taxes.

  • +1

How is this gonna work when micro transactions make 9999x more money.

  • If those games are without in-app purchase it could be fun, but if these are just another pay to win money grab I'm not gonna try it.

    • +1

Arcade subscription comes with full versions of the games so no iap. It is also family shareable, that’s great value for 5 people!

  • apple tv required?

    • +1

      Nah iOS device will do.

      • But if I want to play on tv, apple tv would be enough and no ios device required?

    • +1

I'm not sure if every single Arcade title needs to support all platforms - iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS. You'd think so, but of course there's currently no cameras or gyroscopes etc on Apple TV, so not sure if there might be any limitations based on hardware. Or limitations on what Arcade games could offer.

  • so how does it work?
do we keep the game if we cancel the subscription?

    • Nah no keep

    • How would they let you keep ~100 games just for signing up for a free trial or paying for 1 month?

  • I’ve got a black sealed Xbox one S controller if any one wants to buy? I’ve already got prep for a this subscription :)

  • The service is officially up for people on the iOS 13 beta. (for those who care anyway)
I just signed up for it; pretty good especially if they uphold the no iap rule.

  • The Frogger game is fun.

  • Everyone needs to give Sayonara Wild Hearts a go! Hour long and awesome visuals, bangin soundtrack
