100k-150k Qantas FF Points @ Citi VISA Signature Qantas Credit Card, $5K Spend in 90 Days; $49 First Year Fee

3883

Looks like Citi are offering a decent deal on their Signature QFF VISA card again.

This deal offers:

100,000 QFF points with a $5,000 minimum spend in the first 90 days. Reduced annual fee of $49 in the first year; and

50,000 QFF points upon paying the $444 annual fee for the second year (annual fees, particularly of that magnitude, are not to my tastes but each to their own).

Card also provides travel insurance, and two lounge passes p.a. via Priority Pass.

Again, that $444 annual fee in the second year is a whopper. But happily there is no obligation to stick around for the second year, so deliberate thoroughly on how badly you want those additional 50,000 QFF points.

I posit that this deal is superior to the previously posted deal on account of the reduced annual fee in the first year. But perhaps comparable to this earlier deal.

Earn Rates

1.00 Qantas Point per $ Domestic Spend (Major Airlines, Hotels and Restaurants)
0.75 Qantas Point per $ Domestic Spend (Major Supermarkets, Petrol Stations, retailers)
0.50 Qantas Point per $ Domestic Spend (All Other)
1.00 Qantas Point per $ International Spend

With the economy slowing down and abounding speculation of an imminent recession, there's never been a better time to accumulate personal debt. Onwards!

Those who do not have a Qantas Frequent Flyer account can get free membership from one of the free membership deals here.

NOTE: The random referral system is for a different card - Citi Rewards Platinum. Please don't use the referral link if you're applying for the card in this deal, which is the Citi VISA Signature Qantas Credit Card.

      • The same thing happened to me. I wonder if/what bonus points and annually fee will apply if it's not changed.

        • called them and they said that everything had gone through properly and that's it normal for the app, letters, etc to not mention qantas at all. shrug

  • Can anyone confirm I can apply for this when I just recently got the 400 credit with kogan on the Citi Rewards CC?

  • +5

    No referrals?

  • Does bills and ATO payments contribute to the $5k?

    • Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, refunds, chargebacks, Special Promotions and spend on a Linked Diners Club Card do not contribute to the spend threshold

      • Not linked Diners LOL

    • Can anyone CONFIRM this- that ATO payments are allowed?

I've read conflicting information, and calling was not much luck.

If I cant use for the ATO, I lose $49!

  • +1

I got the 90k offer. Will I get auto declined for this?

    • Is that the Citibank Rewards Signature Credit Card? I want to ask the same question. I only had it cancelled in July this year.

  • I'm on the platinum card free fee for life. Will I be eligible for the signature card?

    • Yes, I have and got the Qantas one therefore you should be able to get this too.

    • +1

I had Citi platinum fee free for life and applied Virgin card. I was advised I can only have 1 Citi card.

      • I have a fee free for life Citibank Signature credit card and I messaged them recently asking about if I applied for the 150k Qantas signature card would I be eligible for the bonus points and I got this reply, so take it for what its worth, maybe contact them yourself and confirm:

Our records indicate that as your existing Citi Signature card has been
opened for more than nine months, you may submit an application for
        another Citi credit card.

Please be advised that you will be eligible to receive bonus points if
the card you will be approved for has this offer.

  • Does anyone know if International Transactions attract a fee?

    • yes

  • Just a thought, but would having an AMEX card automatically put you in the decline pile with citibank? I've heard credit companies aren't fans of those with AMEX simply due to their lax criteria.

    • +1

Nah I've had 2 citibank issued cards and had AMEX too. It's definitely not automatic decline.

      • hmm I have got a new Virgin no-fee credit card. I think this card is Citibank-issued. But if you have had two Citibank cards before with no issues … should I bother applying for this Citibank Card deal?

        • If you got that over 6 months ago then you can try. No real harm coz citibank credit file pings are always $0 so you can always go apply for something else later.

          • @fishball: I've had it for about 6 weeks :/
Have they got a 6 month threshold for some reason?

            • +1

@BigMoth: I think they have an unwritten policy where you can't apply for more than 1 card with them every 6 months. Not sure how harshly enforced it is (eg. 4-6 months might be ok) but 6 weeks would probably get you on the auto decline list.

              • @fishball: I chatted to Citi and they said: their wait threshold doesn't take into account "affiliate" cards like Virgin, however there "may" be another credit score check to get this Citi card.

  • +2

Does the usual 12 Month waiting period apply?

Had a look at the terms and conditions, but can't see it?

  • +4

The referral link nerds to be fixed or removed. It directs to the non Qantas card

  • I have this fee-free. Nowadays I convert my Citi points to Flybuys, as it's better than their own points. Not sure if QFF would be more beneficial, as I have to pay a fee to get such points.

My card was "compromised" a year ago, despite not ever being used in dodgy locations. May have been an internal job. Lot of hassle and phone calls to prevent being charged for fraudulent transactions, which showed up on my bill even if they happened after I reported the card as compromised.

Their Android app is crap, and currently hangs on trying to make a payment. Many reviews state the same.

Worst service of any bank, but made a lot of money from collecting points.

    • Regarding hang, remove app, clear cache and you should be ok after. Learnt it from AFF.

Btw not sure but I think the app now has come a long way than before. It's not too bad now actually.

All these people claiming they’ve been rejected when they’ve met the requirements. Maybe Citi want higher risk applicants, so they default and then owe them interest?

    • +3

      most likely

    • I certainly hope some other bank will come up with some feefree offer to compete with this lame axx company

  • +1

.5 pts per $ rules it out for me. Terrible earn rate if you keep it for 13 months.

  • I've had the qantas Premier everyday card for a month. Does it rule me out?

  • +2

Another member here of the only been rejected by citibank club

  • -2

I should have posted this deal. Saw it last month but forgot haha.

  • +1

Hrmm this looked good until I read the comments. Can anyone recommend the best current deal for all the usuals (QFF points and $0 annual fees, or close to) without a bad application process and minimal problems with getting the points? The St George Amplify card earlier this year was smooth and perfect.

  • Applied and accepted. Couldn't find anywhere to send in my proof of income documents?? Then realised it says it's a "Citi Signature Credit Card", not a "Citi Signature Qantas Credit Card", although I've clicked through the same apply now buttons multiple times and it always leads to the same place.

Please tell me that it's the same card?

    • When I applied for the 90k Qantas points deal before it was also Citi Signature Credit Card.
      So should be the same.

      • “Rewards” should be on the name. ie) Citi Rewards Signature Credit Card. And was there a place to put your qff number when applying this?

        • I think mine has rewards on it. But it didn't have anywhere to put my QFF number.

          • -1

@melodrake: can someone confirm? i am getting the signature card when i click through not the "qantas" one.

  • -2

What does 100k QFF actually get you?

Just searched one way to Tokyo is 144k in april? This won’t even cover for a trip.

    • +2

You've definitely done a bad search, you need to search by classic rewards.

I just searched Sydney to Tokyo in April: Cathay pacific one way is 75k in Business in April. Qantas is 54k in Premiun Economy direct, 72k in Business. I mean it's possible to make it work.

  • +1

I've also always been confused how the points work. I have over 400K QFF and have no idea what to do with it.

    • I buy stuff from qantas store especially when there are heavy discounts ,eg) LEGO

      • +1

Yeah that's one of my options but Qantas Store prices are generally higher than other places. Although I did use parts on it on promotion for an Apple TV.

I read the best value is to book first/business class flights. I've never felt the need to do this as I'm happy to fly economy.

The best value for me would probably be to sell them.

        • Economy classic rewards flights are decent value when there's a sale on.

Otherwise yes selling them for $$$ is the 'best value' option but you risk losing your QFF account if caught.

    • +1

      Have you tried booking flights?

    • First. Class Flights. Well worth the experience.

    • +1

take yourself on a business class oneworld RTW award… Used to be 280k points + taxes but I think its been bumped up along with all the other reward flight premium cabin redemptions

      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/qantas-round-the-world-classic…

Essentially you can book up to 15 flights/segments in business class, 5 stop-overs in cities for more than 24hrs, and travel up to 35,000 miles

  • +1

I had Citibank creditcard that I got qantas deal from ozbargain early this year and cancelled it in April and jumped on to virgin money qantas creditcard deal (Citibank) which I cancelled a couple of months ago. Surprisingly I got approved from Citibank just now with maximum credit $38k(???) which I ticked the maximum credit offered by Citi. I won’t need this much so I should reduce the limit later. I currently have two cards (both credit limit $11k combined)

    • +1

but the real question is, are you eligible for the bonus points despite having the same card earlier this year?

I'm in the same boat, recently cancelled this card, and would jump on this deal if eligible

  • Rejected offered platinum. This happening twice.

    • +1

      they don't like you.

      • yeah mate. don't know whats the rage!!

  • anyone know if I get someone else to apply for the card (parents, bro, etc?) but link my qantas freq flyer, will I still get the points even if I had a citi visa card 6 months ago?
Do the account names have to match for it to link?

    • They're very strict with that. Names have to match exactly.

      • ok cool thanks, i'll get them to open a freq flyer account then :)

        • yeah don't risk it, family/relatives can just do a QFF family transfer of the points to you once they get them.

  • +1

I have the Citi deal from last time. How do I generate a referral link so my wife can sign up with this deal?

  • +1

If you have had a city card, don't hold your breath, you might get rejected.

    • …or you might get approved but wont get the bonus points?

  • Got approved subject to their checking the docos I uploaded. I thought their minimal limit of 15K is too high, but they gave me 40K+, which is absolutely insane. They want to drown me in debt.

    • Got rejected 4 days later "After careful consideration". I am sort of relieved, this seemed like a risky adventure.

      • So they initially approved you but then rejected you once they had a look at your docs? Were these just payslips?

  • +1

Anyone able to update the OzB Referral Link? It is currently going to the normal Rewards card instead of the Qantas Signature…Looking to use a referral link to give an OzB member some extra points :)

    • +1

It is currently going to the normal Rewards card instead of the Qantas Signature

All the links I click on seem to be going to the Rewards card, even direct through their website in incognito.

      • -1

can someone confirm? i am getting the signature card when i click through not the "qantas" one.

  • Any decent Velocity FF deals?

  • Is it possible to go joint application to meet income requirements?
    Got rejected last time.

  • +2

100k with a $49 fee is great, but $5k minimum spend is just more than I spend (which I suppose is a good thing really). Ah well.

    • Just buy giftcards like wow or coles

    • -1

Some people buy refundable flights (e.g. business class flex for 6 months from now), get the points and then get a refund

      • +1

Check terms carefully as most don't refund full amount.
Hotels through sites like Agoda that have full refund policy is less risky. Book 2 weeks stay 6 months out at a 5 star place then cancel before refund window closes.

        • Do you initiate the refund before or after you cancel the card? If the former does citibank still count it as eligible mininum spend? If the latter doesn't the hotel website automatically refund back onto the card you paid with which is now non-existant? Genuinely curious how the process works ie they can't retract the points if you initiate a refund.

          • @johnjones8: You initiate the refund after you get the points. For some cards it's 1 month after the spend, for others it's at the end of the spend window, ie 90 days.

Once you have the points they cannot take them back so you refund back onto card. If you have already paid the spend off, your account goes into credit. You can either have this transferred to another account or spend it slowly at your own pace.

Remember, the only reason they have a spend is so that your initial plans of just getting the points and closing the account fade and you get used to having the card and using it. Majority of people don't end up closing the card which is why there are so many of these deals. They don't care about people like you who actually spend and close as you are in the minority.

            • @7hours 44min ago: Thanks for that.

Once you have the points they cannot take them back

I did wonder if they had some kind of agreement in place with QFF to retract/delete the points if people abused the refund method, but like you said there's only a tiny minority of people attempting this anyway.

the only reason they have a spend is so that your initial plans of just getting the points and closing the account fade and you get used to having the card and using it.

I thought it was so that they would at least make a bit of money from the merchant fees etc from the vendor's side hahaha.

              • @johnjones8: Nah they are playing the long game and going for the regular annual fees or, better still, the interest on a $20k credit card debt you can't pay off immediately.

        • These don't seem that easy to find. Most 5 star places either let you pay a non-refundable rate now, or pay later (couple of days before) or at the hotel.
Or does paying now still give you the ability to cancel prior to the date specified ?

          • @bohn: Change countries, try 4 stars, find a hotel that has full refund and scroll down to their most expensive room, book for longer time, book multiple hotels. If it was easy everyone would do it.

You need to find a place that allows you to pay in full now but get a full refund in the future. Usually the refund date is a week or two before the start of the booking.

            • @7hours 44min ago: Forgot to ask, have you tried this successfully yourself or seen others or is this all speculation haha

              • @johnjones8: I've never done this as I've always managed to achieve the spend through normal use.
I've booked plenty of refundable hotels through Agoda which have taken my money on booking.

I suggest this way as when I looked into the commonly suggested business class flights, I couldn't find any that were fully refundable.

                • +1

@7hours 44min ago: I've done this multiple times using hotels.com and booking.com and it couldn't be easier. Literally thousands of hotels to choose from.

  • Is it true churning through free trial credit cards every year badly affects my credit score? I've never had to pay interest on my purchases and always paid on-time

    • No, my credit score is 1066.

      • How often do you get credit cards? Mine never goes over 800 (generally get 2 credit cards per year, 100% payback rate).

        • usually more regularly, but the last one was a few months ago.
my wife got one late last month and her rating is now 832 or something. she previously got one in June as well.

          • @bohn: Bankwest actually rejected me with my rating. Do you ever tell other banks you have other credit cards when they ask?

            • @jaygee: Yep. I believe with the new reporting system they can see more of that information now anyway.

      • Where do you guys check your credit rating? Mine is high 800s with credit savvy but with credit simple its like low 500s.

        • Would like to know this as well

        • On Finder

  • I just got the Qantas Premier Platinum 3 months ago with a $15k limit (or $10k I forget what the minium was) - would I be eligible?

    • +1

Very much an it depends question - on your income, existing debts, current credit rating, etc, etc.

~5 years back I used to be able to maintain around $80-90k in revolving credit (ie: credit cards) on an income of about $130k with no other debts (so no mortgage, car loan/lease, etc). I never kept track of my credit rating, but I never got knocked back so it must have been good. However, my circumstances have changed significantly since then (mortgage, children) so I can't have as many cards on the go at once and consequently can only churn a few cards each year (rather than, say, half a dozen).

What used to matter was the ability to meet the minimum payment(s), assuming the card was maxed out, after accounting for all your other expenses. Lending standards have probably changed a bit since then + the new credit reporting rules have come in.

      • I meant more that the Qantas cards are through Citibank, so would I be eligible :)

        • Yes you would be eligble but I was told you should wait 6-9 months between Citibank issued applications as I'm in the same boat as you. Not sure if this is true or not as it seems others in this thread seem to have applied for different Citibank issued cards within the space of a few months and gotten approved. Would like to get a definitive answer on this
