Indeed. Perhaps we are about to be zavvi'd.

      • I still haven't received the cancellation email from Zavvi. My order on the way you thinks?

        • go to zavvi.com and you'll find out your order has magically disappeared or cancelled without letting u know

      • Had an idea it would turn out to be in the "too good" category, I learned my lesson from Dell.

  • I think the technical term is to be "optus'd"

e.g. lets just advertise, and not honour anything… they won't catch on it's bait and switch advertising and alert the ACCC will they?

    • False advertising. Optus screwed themselves a couple of years ago with a certian "unlimited" plan and certain types of calls "excluded" but not in their terms. They got royally screwed because of it. But on topic, I'd follow up an incident like this (sinc ei bought a S2 phone while it was in stock) if they dont honour the deal; illegal to advertise, sell, then refuse…as reporting 'bargains' such as this on webistes like ozbargain would effectively become redundant with deals becoming "non existant" after a day, or week, etc.

  • +1

:( Hmm, i hope they honor it but not gonna get my hopes up

    • +2

See i am starting to get my hopes up, sitting here thinking they would have cancelled everything already

  • I didn't buy one myself but I hope they honour the orders placed so far. In saying that, if it was a stuff up though then it's hard to see that happening as I would imagine they would be up for major losses.

  • +3

I reckon they might have stuffed up and put their cost price rather than their selling price.

In that case they should honour it.

    • +2

If they don't then there'll be a big SS boycott by Ozb!!! :)

      • +3

These things happen. Don't take it personally if they don't honor the price.

        • +1

Only joking, it happens quite often on ozb anyway. I have an ip4 already and was just buying this for the sake of trying Android. Having said that, being an Australian business they need to take due care as this could be construed as a breach of the CCA.

    • is there such a huge margin on the phone?

      • highly possible on massive stock intake, Samsung will do huge rebates if you take in a certain amount and help boost their ego against Apple :D

  • Something smells fishy - no correspondence from SS at all.

    • +1

PayPal will track their ebay account don't worry mate,

SS is taking a breather, maybe calling for employee votes on "To Honour or Not To Honour, that is the question…"

      • Not worried about the money, payed with PayPal.

I just don't think it'll be honoured. I sent an email this morning about it, still haven't got a reply.

        • -1

Probably right there.. And anyone who doesn't have a PayPal account is a FOOL! The best concept ever devised as far as consumer protection goes. I would never touch a dodgy mob like this without the PayPal safety net.

        • Someone here rang, they are going to honour it but they will take about a month to fill all the orders.

  • could someone explain, or link me to an explanation of why this phone is so raved about? i'm honestly at a loss. is it the 1080p recording? is it the dual core cpu? if i dont play games on my phone, is this phone any better than say, an ip4 or desire?

i ask because i'm in the market for a new phone, but have no concrete selection yet

    • +2

Well dual-core cpu and 1GB ram let's it run newer apps, better games when they come out, and multi-task better. It's cpu, 1080p recording and Super AMOLED screen is the main differences that puts it ahead of other smartphones.

Google: Samsung Galaxy S II Review

    • +1

The most simple reason if you don't really care about specs for technical reasons, is the phone is fairly future proof. The high end specs and myriad of connectivity options means that in two years this phone is likely to still be supported.

      • +1

When you say future proof, what does it really have connectivity-wise that anything such as a Desire or later model doesn't have?

Besides being a powerful beast, functionally there's nothing too different.

Now if the battery could last more than 2 days I'd be impressed.

    • +2

Well considering $520 is 40% less than the cost for a iPhone 4, yes it's much better value…

  • +3

Just called SS, their number is 0296663055. The guy told me he had to speak to sales team first, but then he told me that they would honour it after I asked him again (felt pretty dodgy but oh well, its such a cheap deal!) but it would take them quite a while to fulfil all orders since they are obviously overloaded with so many demands for S 2. Expect to wait for a month and maybe even more to receive the phone, I'll be happy if I could get mine in under 3 weeks. Cant wait! And I would most certainly agree with stumo that 473 is probably the cost price! haha!

    • After a month it'll probably be this price locally!

    • well based on their terms

For Digital Camera (and Lens), Video Camcorder or Mobile Phone orders - the items will be shipped directly from Oversea Supplier by Fedex, DHL or EMS. It take 3-7 working days to arrive anywhere in Australia.

    • Was that his estimate or yours for the delay time? Hopefully they do them in the order they were paid for, I paid as quickly as my fingers would let me!

      • that estimate was mine, but my own experience tells me that online retailers like SS that attract such negative reviews would take their own time for delivery. and i've ordered from places such as fragrancenet, etc. takes about a mth….then again, the buying experience would vary from person to person, but i myself would be hoping that it comes quickly, esp not when the guy told me that it would take a while for them to fulfil the S 2 orders.

        • Well in that case luckily i've got a Optimus 3D coming tomorrow to tie me over for a few weeks.

          Thanks for calling them!

        • What time wa you order placed? Just trying to gauge if mine was before or after :)

        • i placed mine last night at around 1130pm

    • +4

They could at least send out an email so we're not all left hanging.

    • Cheers for that. See my update pg5.

$473 is not the manufacturing price. The Iphone 4's manufacturing price is $180. That is how much it costs to make one iPhone 4. You are telling me this phone, which is perhaps marginally higher spec than the iPhone 4 costs 150% more to make?

It's more like $200-$220 to make. $500 seems like a good deal now, but in a few months $500 will be what you pay at Dick Smith for this phone.

    • +3

I think he's referring to the cost price of Shoppingsquare is getting it for from their suppliers.

Sure, it probably costs around $220 or so to make, but you go through factor profit margin for Samsung, wholesalers, various distribution channels, maybe something like $220 * 1.3 * 1.3 * 1.2 + freight charges etc, could easily get up to > $400, ie the retailers cost price.

I have friends running mobile phone shops in Asia, have been told the margins are actually very low, anywhere between 5%-10%

And for your $500 comment… probably applies to any technology product… that's the way it is. But seeing how much the Galaxy S is still selling for I would say this is still an awesome deal (if its honoured)

      • -2

True, that is why these phones/tablets are not really a "bargain" until the buy price is within +100% of the actual manufacturing price.

You can't justifying going to a department store and buying one of these phones, when the floor price is raised by several layers of $$$ profit making/ freight charges/ holdings costs.

The Galaxy Tab from a few months was a good buy. US$200 to manufacture, AUS$300 to buy outright.

        • +14

Yeah… Screw research and development, marketing and distribution costs - a products cost to a business is only as much as the value of its raw materials.

I prefer to judge my bargains based on a direct comparison to the rest of the market at a particular point in time.

        • i'm glad to hear an opinion similar to mine, as many times before i've been shot down with arguments like:

"but who cares that 16GB of flash costs $15… the 32GB x or y for $100 more than 16GB is a good ladada"

        • -3

dvsb, your view is actual more simplistic than joeno's and has very little foresight.

if you purchase something that does not have a high intrinsic value, your risk of loss from depreciation is very high.

also, joeno already took the distribution marketing blahblah overheads into account. those costs should be as little as possible.

no one is saying the item should be sold at manufacturing cost. we're only saying that 300% above manufacturing cost is not a good time to buy given it'll fall to around 100% margin relatively soon

        • +4

@kimmik then i suggest you dont buy any thing in modern society. Cuz you clearly dont care for marketing, commissions and other cost. not to mention the big CEO's pay.
This is the world you live in. Just cuz something should cost $100 doesnt mean it need to be sold at that cost. Supply, demand, availability of money and peoples want to spend do play an important factor in market pricing.

        • i'm sorry dy4me, did you read what i wrote??

"no one is saying the item should be sold at manufacturing cost. "

        • +2

@kimmik im not trying to shoot you down. It think what im saying is prices are determined by market forces. Right now they are high. with time and advances in tech they will drop. it really depends on ur needs. but you must remember that with software also developing at a fast rate, chances are that buying an older phone is not always a good idea.

Also to clarify, i dont think we should be paying more than 100%. but the problem is that prices not up to us per say. Its more a market thing. Thats exactly why prices of everything dropped in 2008, cuz no1 wanted to spend

        • +2

          @Joeno.

Stop trolling with your woefully stupid posts. To use a somewhat analogous, but very common comparison I hear about a lot from work is that it only costs a few bucks to run an MRI/CT/X-Ray, but people will bitch "How come it costs me $400 FOR A SCAN?!"

Well, Bruno that's due to a very basic economic principle called Rate of Return. The initial set-up cost of a machine is very expensive (in the order of hundreds of thousands of dollars) so hospitals to offset this by charging hundreds of dollars as opposed to a few bucks in electricity and service bills, so they can eventually even out.

Companies like Samsung and Apple sink millions into R&D, designing, marketing, software, patents, etc so of course they're charging more than double the cost of raw materials. Once they're in the black, then they can afford to relax their profit margins by lowering the price, especially once it becomes cheaper to manufacture due to economies of scale.

      • I think determining whether or not a technology product is a good deal by the margin on cost is an extremely poor way of looking at it

Example - look at the PS3, when it launched in 2006 it costed $599 USD - this was selling below cost due to Sony's strategy (and incredibly expensive manufacturing processes). Good deal at the time? Hardly, poor software support, no rumble controls etc etc.

Like dy4me said, market forces determine the prices of products - this is a good deal at this point in time, top of the range specs, at least 20% below everywhere else it's selling at. Of course say 6 month down the track it will be the same price or lower, that's the way technology products are - early adopters pay more, and they enjoy it - that's how utility works.

Just saying - For now, this is a very good deal for what you're paying for… lol

Anyway, hope everyone who's ordered the deal it's honoured, it's an awesome phone!

        • " this was selling below cost due to Sony's strategy (and incredibly expensive manufacturing processes). Good deal at the time? "

it was a GREAT DEAL! - because stand alone bluray players costed as much as PS3 and did very little.

running hot and somewhat noisier is a different issue, but the hardware at the time was top value purchase. it is still, after 7years, not obsolete.

bluray players costed much less to make, but the mark up was very high, whereas the ps3 hardware was very future proof, and provided most (or arguably better) functionality than bluray players.

how future proof was the ps3? well…. it had more function at release than the current iteration - one of which is ps2 emulation.

"Just saying - For now, this is a very good deal for what you're paying for… lol"

          i agree…

  • Has anyone's order progressed past the "paid" stage?

Hey guys.. i just had Optus call me and offer the Galaxy S 2 on a $29 cap with NO handset repayments at all for 24months. I found it hard to believe as i thought he was talking about the original Galaxy S which i already have. He said look on the website.. so i did and the Galaxy S 2 came up on a $29 cap with $20 handset repayments over 24months. I told him to email me the deal he was going to offer me before i commit. I'm still waiting on that email, so at this stage, i dont know how true it is.. but if it is.. WOW! If he manages to get back to me.. i'll let you all know (especially for all of those people who missed out on this deal).

    • I have checked Optus website , there is n't such deal ;-(
      http://www.optus.com.au/store/phone/galaxysii?sid=MobAFeat1:…

      • I know.. hence why i thought it was weird. So im not sure if it'll actually happen, but if it does, i'll let you all know. I personally thought he was getting confused with the original galaxy s. But he went onto the website and looked but kept going on about the galaxy s 2 even after seeing it. So i dont know.. hmm. I'll keep you updated anyway. He was also offering the iphone 4 free on a $49 cap for 24months.

      • +1

I think the price he quoted was wrong, and the website is right. Get his offer in writing.

        • I'm trying my hardest. I'll contact them tomorrow if i don't hear from them.

    • Let us know, sounds awesome

    • +1

I want whatever this guy is on

    • You don't work for Optus by any chance do you?

      • No i definitely dont. I switched over from Optus in September last year and went to Virgin. The call was a little odd cos they said something about my Optus account, but i dont have one anymore due to the Ombudsman cancelling my contract and giving me a galaxy s.

      • Optus is rubbish… I wouldn't pay half what their asking for to put up with their overloaded, slow, incompetent network.

    • No reply from that Optus guy by phone or email.. sounded too good to be true anyway :-( If anything changes, i'll let you all know.

  • it shows like…

rather buy Galaxy Tab 10.1 and stick with my current iphone 4

    • I've got an IP4, planning to get the Galaxy S II then maybe a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or 8.9.

Will be Ebaying my iphone, looking at current prices I should end up infront.

      • the TAB is better choice I suppose , mainly we need fast and quick internet assess , iP4 is good but I need larger screen .

  • +1

Damn didn't have enough money in my MasterCard Debit card linked to my Paypal. Doh!!! Couldn't this come after 7PM today (Pay Day). Sheesh!!

    • Poor you , do some netbank transfer , you will be ok ;-()

    • That's where a real credit card comes in handy.

    • +12

lol its not BS, you just missed the boat.

If they don't honor it, it will be BS.

      • Only time will tell whether they will acknowledge the deal or not. I'd buy it in an instinct if i didnt have the first SGS already tries to be content!

        • +5

Cool story bro tell it again

        • +2

The shop's already acknowledged the deal, someone above rang up and got it confirmed, it's going ahead.

  • i hope we get an email soon stating when it will be shipped

  • I've been reading up on shopping square and it seems to be a very hit or miss store - customers have either been satisfied or have felt "hung out to dry" i.e. communication has been bad with regards to shipping/payment or the product is second hand. But at this price, it was too hard to resist, here's hoping that this won't be the case.

Does anyone have any confirmation on whether or not this phone is unlocked and brand new? Because so far, I've got no reply from them and they haven't even confirmed my payment =/

    • +1

As long as they aren't as bad as Fishpond I'll be happy. They recently took about 8 weeks to send an Xbox Live Points card, by Far the worst shipping experience I have ever encountered, including stuff shipped from Overseas.
Really looking forward to this phone now, have already ordered a cheap case and screen protectors for about $5 in total, They will both probably beat the Phone and they are being shipped from China.

  • If it is going to take a month to be delivered I'll be cancelling.

    • +1

the more people cancelling the faster the orders get fulfilled, thanks matey!! :D

  • -6

    Its a sub par model - Code: (DS)MP-SAM-I9100-Galaxy S II-K

    Notice the K ??

The "K" units have poor emf insulation on the audio components. So when you put in in-ear earphones and multitask or just use on the phone or make the cpu frequency change, this will be picked up in the wiring. Because of that you will hear hiss or some static noises which last about a sec or too

So its like a factory second I guess….hence the price

    • where did you read this?

    • he pretty much just created the account just to post this. What are the chances for reliability?

    • -1

Negative votes? Denial is a powerful thing isn't it buyers?

      • Negative votes would be for the spreading of false rumours. He took something from Whirlpool out of context and decided it to preach it as gospel. Idiot.

    • +1

Yes, i do notice the 'K'. I also notice you have copy and pasted someone else's post with one alteration: the addition of "K" units

"Basically some units have poor emf insulation on the audio components. So when you put in in-ear earphones and multitask or just use on the phone or make the cpu frequency change, this will be picked up in the wiring. Because of that you will hear hiss or some static noises which last about a sec or too [sic]."

A link to the post in question: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1710357&p…

    • +1

LOL, you just copy & pasted that from Whirlpool.

There's no proof to back it up..

    • K means black fyi. (That product code is defined by SS not Samsung.)

  • +1

What chances are that these 'fell off' a container ship and err went missing during delivery and now for sale cheap?

  • the deal has now gone up 673.95
I believe it was a mistake from SS.

  • -4

Search the whirlpool forums….its on there.
And yes reading this, I thought I would join so I could post this….so people could check if they have ordered a "k" model, and cancel it….and if it is a normal model, then thats great!

    • please provide a link.

    • +1

      Link pls

    • +2

I did a search and couldn't find anything about it, closest thing i found was someone complaining about the problem you mentioned but no one in that thread said anything about a "K" model.

    • +5

I believe this is where Sammyboy is deriving his info from: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1710357&p…

There is an awful lot of miscommunication happening in the thread; i think it's due to Laurie60's post, which people are misunderstanding to be in response to the post prior; however, i believe he was just making a general comment on the stock from SS. None of the people experiencing audio issues have said that they have a K model.

      • +2

Sammyboy you need to take a reading course. Or at least learn to read IN CONTEXT so you don't look like a fool when you spread rumours.

      • Meh, even if it does have this problem who the hell cares? hissing on in-ear headphones while your multitasking, so don't multitask while listening to music, or use the ipod that everyone has at least one of to listen to your music and avoid running down your phone battery.

    • It's human psychology, if you miss out on a deal, you feel better telling everyone why you wouldn't have gone for the deal anyway, even if you would have.

      • -3

Dont really care about these useless comments. I've had my Galaxy S2 for a week now. Unbranded Australian Aus tick for $750 outright. Got $225 for my HTC desire which was free, and will claim GST at the airport. So all in all will pay $450 outright for my Galaxy S2. Check your comments before accusing me of not having a galaxy s2, being jealous about the price or being an apple fanboi.

This is the thanks I get for just putting up some info for people to lookout for just incase this "k" model (MP-SAM-I9100-Galaxy S II-K) which was in the shoppingsquare listing is different, so that you could get a refund if you wanted.
