Garmin Edge 530 GPS Bike Computer $376.99 Delivered @ The Odd Spoke

70

True sequel to the the venerable Garmin Edge 520, as the 520 Plus was a bit of a flop. This seems to be the lowest price around at the moment from a local retailer. Also available from their Catch Marketplace and eBay store (+$5.95 shipping) for those who may have taken advantage of the rash of Catch gift cards & cashbacks and eBay gift card deals recently.

Hands-on review by DCRainmaker, blog if you want to read, and YT if you want a video instead.

**Edit - this is offered through the Odd Spoke on Amazon.

  • The Edge 130 is also on sale.

Mind that you still should get sensors to go with both of these.

  • 5% price beat at 99bikes as well

    • Garmin is excluded from the 5% price beat..

  • Do you need anything additional to get these mounted on a bike and getting accurate readouts?

    The sensors are another ~$100..

    • Mounting kit is included but yes you really need sensors (although gps can work independently). You don’t need to have Garmin, any Ant+ or Bluetooth sensors will work. Eg Decathlon does a set for about $60. I’m sure eBay or Ali baba have them cheaper.

      • I disagree, you don't NEED sensors as the accuracy outdoors without them is fine for most users. The sensors will however allow additional information (i.e. cadence) or recording speed on a basic wheel-on indoor trainer for example, if you need that.

      • Don't need sensors. GPS speed is fine for most users. I really don't understand cadence sensors too - you should be able to feel how fast you are pedaling.

        • As you've already spent 300+ on the computer a cadence sensor (HR if you have the money) is a sensible extra. Otherwise, save your pennies and use your phone.

BTW you don't need the power meter.

        • A lot of drills require a specific cadence for muscle strength or aerobic training. Outside of that its a pretty useless number.

  • If you’re not pairing it up with power meters, sensors etc then a Edge 130 would do the job fine. Unless you want mapping etc.

While you don’t need any speed or cadence sensors for both of these units to work I feel that cadence or a power meter (which most do cadence too) is the best for training. It takes the guess work out of it.

Got my Garmin Edge 130 about a year ago on sale $200. Couldn't be happier with it. In the past, I thought a big colour screen was optimal when in fact, all you really want is a crisp display that reads well in full sunlight, only the features you "need" and a good battery life.

  • Anyone able to recommend any cheaper options for gps/speed tracking ? Or is a phone attached do the job?

    • Lezyne do some decent no-frills model for low $100's.

      • Basic no-frills, yeah Lezyne is great, but I would argue at a similar price point you'd get more from the Edge 130. I actually upgraded from the Lezyne Super GPS which I've had for about a year to the Edge 530 just last week, hands down Garmin provides more functionality.
