  • links broken

edit: looks like the whole centercom website isn't working

  • what is the read/write speed?

    • +1

One of the ozbargainer post the read/write speed

Write performance was 13.1MB/sec sustained - copying from my SSD to USB (started at 16 MB/sec, never went below 13.1 MB/sec)
Read performance was 18.2MB/sec sustained - copying from USB to my SSD

  • Hi Centercom, Just found that if you order 1, the postage is $3, anything more it changes to $8.95 for Melb metro - can you pls fix this?

    edit: can you pick-up?

    • Hi yes pick up is available @ all store.
This promotion is limited 1 per cusomter

  • Thinking to use this on my xbox 4gb slim, or better off buying an 320GB hdd for $50 and make it for xbox…any difference except the size?

    • Speed.

    • Depends what you're using it for. Xbox will limit every usb port to 4 (?) gb's if it is formatted for use in save games, installs etc.

  • Good deal if the transfer speeds are correct

  • how good is it compared to toshiba 16gb ?

  • Cost me $15.30 inc postage to Brisbane and paypal charges.

    • Is it more if you pay via PayPal?

      • +1

2% jelko, same for CC. Still great value I reckon: I got one.

Edit: Holy cow! As llama points out below, charging a surcharge for PayPal transactions goes against PayPal's T&Cs…

  • Good price but I have so many at home from previous sale that I have not yet opened.

  • is this online only or is the price the same instore? Does the same go for the seagate hard drive?

    • +1

Yes, they both online and instore as well.

  • +1

gosh, I bought 8gb strontium stick for $12 just a week ago :(

  • Thought I had better buy one seeing as I posted the deal;)

  • Just placed my order with bank transfer, Total was $15 :) niceeeee

    • yea…did the same believing that NAB to NAB transfer would be instant. Sent an email to CentreCom to confirm receipt of payment, to which the reply was:

"We will most likely receive your payment next Monday or Tuesday, this is due to the payment method selected (bank transfer) which does take a couple of working days to show up in our account."

"Unfortunately this is not the case, we also do not have an accounts person checking our bank account for the whole day. Our accounts department check the account once each morning and apply the day’s payments."

Can someone from CentreCom please specify this on the website ??

      • A message on the website isn't really needed. Bank Transfer is never "instant", and it's not reasonable to expect somebody at the company to check the inward payments continuously.

        • +2

Transfer within the same bank is always instant. Suggestion: Refresh your knowledge.

        • @silver_libran I thought the same, until I needed an immediate transfer and it didn't happen. Turns out NAB only has instant for linked accounts. Now if I need instant I will always deposit cash over the counter. Also agree with Ilama, that it is unreasonable to expect a company to have someone watching incoming payments 24/7.

    • with NAB u have to have sms security now for the transfer to be instant but 99% of the time a same bank transfer instant!

  • How's the warranty?

    • +1

It comes with 5-year hassle-free warranty

  • Will these be available at the Nunawading Store if I go there tomorrow?

    • +1

I suggest call Nunawadung :9878 5211 before you go.

  • That is a good deal, gotta drop by the store tomorrow then ;-) Thanks for sharing.

  • Online Stock Update Please

    • +3

@1pm we still have couple hundred USB left.

  • Interesting that the "Smart Tower 200 - 2TB Storage" has Dual Core E3400 2.60GHz but 8gb of ram. Major overkill of ram if you ask me.

16GB usb is a great deal though

2% Paypal Surcharge is a breach of Paypal User Agreement.

Personally I don't mind paying it, but it IS a breach

    • Hey wow you're right! I never knew that. I'll wear the 30c this time but will be on the lookout for this in future. Thanks for sharing llama.

    • Agree. Totally unacceptable to pass the paypal fee to customers.

      • Why is it unacceptable? Paypal charge through the nose and they've given you a fee free payment option (ie bank deposit). If they charge for CC they should charge for Paypal.

Also, I think the "no paypal surcharge" only applies to eBay sales.

    • totally agree with this and suggest possibly doing more research and perhaps reporting it, im sick to death of these surcharges being passed on ABOVE what the retailer actually pays!

      • +2

2% is actually below the base rate that PayPal charges. The base rate is 2.4% + 30 cents per transaction. With the lowest rate 1.1% + 30 cents for accepting $150,000 or more per month.
In my opinion charging 2% is acceptable, as for being in breech of PayPal's policy sure it is in breech but it's a dumb policy anyway. If they don't charge a surcharge for accepting a payment method in which the retailer is being charged for, the retailer will just bump up the price across the board and everyone including those paying by cash and direct deposit will be charged extra (now that's unacceptable). Those who want the convenience or the service of products such as CC and PayPal should pay for the privallage and convenience, not every customer to a store.

Also they can just say it's a handling fee for processing PayPal payments and then that is no longer a breech of PayPal policies, also they aren't charging for PayPal fees they are charging a processing fee for a certain payment that is at a DIFFERENT rate to PayPal's fees rates.

        • +1

Respectfully, TnD, I disagree with you on a few points.

Firstly, any retailer bumping up their prices for all customers just leaves them open to be undercut by their competitors. That's the beauty of a free market.

Secondly, if you read the 'handling fee' clause carefully PayPal T&C are very specific: any 'handling' fee for PayPal payments shouldn't be more than non-PayPal payments incur. I.e if direct deposit is free, and PayPal incurs an additional 2%, that's not a 'handling fee': it's a textbook definition of a surcharge.

Thirdly, and most importantly, sellers don't just offer an alternative payment method when they offer a PayPal option. They offer buyers PayPal's credibility, reputation and peace of mind, and a low risk of CC fraud. That's why high-rep companies don't need it and why low or no-rep companies pay for it to attract customers. How often have you heard someone here say "I used PayPal, so I'm not worried". Without that option I often walk away from 'unknowns'. What sellers buy for their PayPal fees is my trust, because PayPal has earned it already.

        • +1

          Matty
I agree with you on your first point, and that is why the whole market (online computer stores like these that accept PayPal) charge a PayPal fee of 2%, it's equal across the field. That way their advertised prices stay low and they don't loose out on fees incurred from PayPal.

2% is no higher than the charge for CC, just because it's higher than free Bank Deposits doesn't mean it isn't lower or equal to another form of payment.

PayPal protection is not bought by the retailer. It is bought by the consumer. Like you said consumers choose PayPal for protection, and like everything, protection comes at a cost. And it is completely unreasonable for this cost to be covered by the retailer if it means their profit from selling that item becomes below the point in which it is justifiable to offer a service(and with sales like these would most likely mean that profit is narrow at <5% or even non-existant and they're making a loss before covering any fees incurred by the provider of a payment system).

If you as a consumer want protection, then you should pay for it. The retailer is merely offering a payment method to suit you if you see fit. (If the cost after the surcharge on PayPal payments jacks up the price to above what you as the consumer is willing to pay then you have the power to walk away and let that business lose sales)

If you've ever sold large quantities of anything in a highly competitive market and offered PayPal as a method of payment, you will understand why these surcharges are necessary. If you don't pass the fees on you won't be able to compete as your profit margins become so slim that it's not worth it and you're better off putting your money in a bank account.

        • +1

I hear you TnD, you raise some interesting points.

Until the world changes (or PayPal themselves face tough competition!) I'm going to continue to favour PayPal as a form of insurance for sellers I would otherwise not purchase from.

And where I think we'll agree to disagree is that I believe the seller pays for that 'insurance' to prevent me from simply going elsewhere (that I already know and trust). But I'm certainly challenged by your argument that it should be me who pays: for my insurance to buy wherever I want.

I think we both agree that that's not particularly fair on newer/lower-volume/margin traders who have to pay PayPal excessive fees, and unfortunately until the nature of online trust/CC security takes some major leaps forward PayPal has them by the short and curlies.

Thanks for the 'food for thought' TnD

  • +1

I didn't realise until after I had already paid by paypal. Sure it is only .30 but leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

    • That's why I paid via bank transfer I don't mind waiting a few extra days.

    • +3

I saved 30c by going direct deposit !! PAWNAGEEEEEEE

Has it been sold out? I can't find it on the website.

    • cant find it either… maybe it has

      • yeha, not seeing it?
is it public or email only?
i clicked photo top of this page, and sorted by price.

  • Should read the actual info on the page: Product sold out, unavailable or discontinued.

    • I just wanted confirmation from the REP because selling a couple hundred USBs in 2hrs seems pretty fast

  • "Product sold out, unavailable or discontinued."

  • Product sold out.. hope can buy it in store

    SOLD OUT….SOLD OUT….SOLD OUT
  • Good deal! 13MB/s write and 18MB/s read is impressive for a $12 Flash Drive. Shame it's sold out…

  • I should go to their facebook to request more.. how shame its sold out

  • @ 1pm = couple of hundreds left
    @ 6pm = ALL sold out??

if I work in Australian Tax Office, I'm starting to wonder what is their turn over……..

    • Well it is cheap, they do post and it's on ozbargain. Very possible to be sold out by now.

    • not suspicious at all
If it's a true bargain, there could be heaps gone in that time frame

  • +2

No thanks, I'd assume everyone will probably get their money taken then 2 weeks later be told that they can't get their order completed and then their money held. I really wish that centrecom gets stopped from advertising on here, they are one of the worst PC shops as far as ethics goes that I know of, even MSY is higher up in my list as far as customer service goes. NEG'd from me coz they shouldn't even be on here from all the crap they have made ozbargainers put up with in the past.

    • -1

Why did you neg me I'm not centrecom I was just trying to help people out?

      • +4

He didn't neg you. He negged the deal, more so the site actually..

    • exactly what happened to me last time. well said.

    • i object to having to provide a copy of a bank statement, a photocopy of a credit card (even if it's "just the back; it's easy to match up to the front!) and a personal signed statement… for a $13 stick of memory?

I cancelled my order wording my disapproval and not even a 'oh sorry' just 'order cancelled at customers request'

Based on other feedback here, i'll definitely never buy anything from these guys again!

  • anyone's order move past "pending"?

  • Got one in store earlier this evening (Nunawading VIC). No problem with stock availability there at that time.

Tested using H2testw v1.4 (via crappy Vista build on laptop)
    Test finished without errors.
    Writing speed: 9.73 MByte/s

  • I have had centrecom mess me around on stock before. Same as OW. You ring up, ask if they have stock and they say YES. You go straight there (usually less than 30 min) and ask for your product. They look it up, say yes I have it, then go out the back only to come back 5 min later saying some crap like: the items in stock are being held/broken/not for sale. Centrecom tried to sell me another crapper product for higher price!
I get a bit sick of it.

  • Website is sold out only. just head over to the centrecom frankston store, we have lots there not to sure abt the other stores.

  • sold out

    • …online. Probably still available at your local store as mentioned by several people already!

  • Pity these are sold out online… I was looking for a new 16Gb stick with my old one looking like it's corrupted itself.

  • +1

Err i went to Clayton Centrecom and was charged $19, told the site misadvertised…. WTF ?

    • +1

It shouldn't be, that's crappy. Since I just got it from Sunshine for $12. Here is the receipt, it might help you getting the difference back. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4967347/Others/strontium16gb.jpg). Hope the picture is clear enough.

    • +1

That is total crap! I went in with 2 others yesterday at about 3pm to the Clayton branch as well and bought them for $12.00 each. However, they seemed unhappy to let them go for $12, and the manager even went as far to mention that in the future they should be treating groups of people going into the shop as 1 customer (meaning that they really should be only selling us one USB instead of three).

Additionally, they told us that they could only sell us one stick as they needed to wait for more stock to be opened from the back of the shop.. but we weren't happy with that obviously, and after a bit of talking they sold us 3.

A bargain is a bargain - which we all love here, but I don't think its worth us made to feel like a beggars for centrecom to honour a deal they backed up here themselves!

  • +1

This seems pretty dodgy practice by centrecom here on ozbargain

  • +1

Took my son and bought 2 from Centrecom in Elsternwick this afternoon, they had more then 40 in stock!, did not have to wait 2 long either, most certainly a bargain amd does not deserve a negative!

    THANKS FOR THE POST
