Acer Swift 3 (14" FHD, AMD 300U, 512GB/4GB, Backlit KB) $559.20 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ Bing Lee eBay

270
PBLEE20

This deal is now around $22 cheaper. Thanks to OP UnknownXp998 in the last post for the research about the RAM:

Did some digging and found that there's 4gb of ram soldered with an additional port that supports up to 8gb (12gb in total). The closest model I could find was the Swift 3 SF314-41-R80D, the only difference is the size of the SSD.

After a RAM upgrade, it will become a great budget laptop / semi-ultrabook that covers all bases well. I'm currently using a Swift 3 for 2+ years and am really happy with its build and all round performance.

Anyone knows Whats 300U like? is it ok for light use?

    Hows the battery life?

    • +2

      light use is ok

but i'd spend a bit more on below, which is a much better cpu, i mean like 300% better

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492098

      • It's single slot 4gb RAM, Can be upgraded to 8

        • what limits to 8gb?

there is 32gb stick sodimm for under $200 posted here

      • "phunkydude" The one you liked Was also a great deal, sold out now. Definitely not 300% better than this CPU, maybe 20%-50% in some areas, but closer in others.

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+300U&id=ā€¦

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-8265Uā€¦

Also often either the CPU or Motherboard or both will limit the Max Ram.

The 300u is equivalent to an 8th gen Intel i3. It's been benchmarked to be equivalent to a 7th Gen Dual Core Mobile i5. The IGPU is capable of playing 4k video without issues. 8th Gen i5 is definitely not 300% better.

    • +3

Will be good for light use, the deal phunkydude linked above has a faster CPU with double the cores, but the 300U is no slouch and will be comparable to 7th gen i5s and 8th gen i3s.

Battery life listing quotes up to 12.5 hours, but I highly doubt it'll get anywhere close. My i5-7200U Swift 3 had claims of 10 hours battery life and I was only getting around 4 hours on max brightness under heavy use, but lowering the brightness and battery settings for uni can stretch it to >7.

      0 i did?

      • No I'm dumb.

    Or this for $479.20?

    • It's a 15.6" laptop so will be a fair bit bigger, although that also has good specs for the money.

      • +1

I'm thinking as a laptop that primarily stays on my desk it might be a good decision. I just take it off my desk occasionally to plug it in to the printer, or to work elsewhere but mainly a home laptop. My Dell is getting old.

        • +1

In that case I reckon either of them will be totally fine.

        • +1

Both great machines for the price. Main diff I can see that could matter to you is Backlit keyboard on the Swift 3 and smaller lighter ( could be + or - ), but you might get an IPS screen on the Swift but going on latest report/comment on the Aspire 5 listing no IPS for that model.

Can always upgrade the hhd if needed and sounds like battery life should not matter too much if plugged in most of the time on a desk.

If you can get into a store to eyeball and test that would be best, but really can't go wrong with either for the price, just depends on your preferences.

            @ozhunter68:

Can always upgrade the hhd if needed

I thought both came with SSD?

If you can get into a store to eyeball and test that would be best

Yeah it would be, I might purchase now - then eyeball in store before I open it :D

            Thanks for your help!

@pennypincher98: Good call. Forgot the Bing Lee sale ends tonight.

What I meant with upgrading hhd if needed, was for some people 128GB, so around 90-100GB usable would not be enough down the track.

Good news is someone opened one up the i3 model and it has a 128GB NVMe installed AND has an empty 2.5" sata, so easy to chuck another 7mm. hhd in IF you want/need and don't even have to clone O/S.

Also has backlit keyboard, so great deal. I paid around $660 for older ( 4yrs ) similar spec 3 rd. Gen i3 and backlit keyboard. It is touchscreen ( not FHD nor IPS ), but I never use it anyway on a laptop lol.

              • @ozhunter68: Oh that's great, I'm glad I decided to go with it!
Having an SSD + HDD is an ideal set up because I can have storage if I need but also speed for what I use most.
Thank you for your insight :)

I got this one from the last deal, took forever to get delivered to WA, but otherwise neat little machine.

RAM upgrade: yes, correct, you can add 8GB to an empty slot. What is a bit weird: it reports 12GB installed but only 9.x GB usable RAM. Where did the other 2GB go? Allocated to the graphics maybe?

    • How much to ship to W.A.? With average screen brightness and use how long can the battery last?

      • +1

Free shipping with Plus. Battery life will depend on what you use it for, I can only give a rough estimate, never really timed it, but perhaps 7 hours just playing YouTube on medium brightness.

        • Thanks. Got to be happy with that for the size and weight.

Does it look like an IPS screen, and does it get decently bright enough?

          • +1

@ozhunter68: Here's the product support page with all the specs as well.
It is listed as IPS and the viewing angles are good, so I don't have any reason to doubt it.
Brightness is not great, I certainly would not fancy using it outdoors.

            • @team teri: Cheers. Was just asking as it can be a bit hard sometimes to be sure with mat screens unless checking side by side, or confirming from the product list. I am a bit careful as some people just don't know, even stores sometimes mix it up.

Bought a Lenovo S300 Chromebook from Officeworks and it was ( and still is ) listed as having an ISP display. As I got it on sale $89 off I was OK with it and kept it, but would have preferred an IPS like it's smaller 11.6" brother the C330.

You got yourself a nice laptop deal there, enjoy.

I had a look in store when the deal was first listed on OzB. Specs look good and it feels solid. I think one of my workmates bought it back then. I'd definitely consider this as a travel laptop when I travel next time.

These Acer Swifts are great value laptops/ultrabooks when on sale.

Keep also in mind the Acer Swift 1 14" which has a slick metal build, usb C, FHD IPS display, slower Cpu ( QC n4100/n5000 ), super long battery life close to 14-16 hrs., even lighter @ 1.3Kg., and for me best of all it's completely quiet with radiant cooling ( does not get hot ). I got one earlier on this year and although not as powerful as this listing or an i3/i5, for travelling it works really well for most needs.
